5:50 the massive Mound Rd interchange. It was constructed to accommodate the Van Dyke Expressway, but the highway was never built due to highway revolts. Now it's an overengineered behemoth serving a county road. Mound Rd was built with an unusually wide median, largely in anticipation of making it a full freeway sometime in the future, but I doubt that will ever happen. Same is true of M-59 east of Utica.

I enjoyed the I-696 ride. I always thought the freeway was well maintained and I like the idea of both 11 and 12 mile are pretty much right on top of I-696. It saves on space. I did not know the interesting nuggets of information displayed on the earlier posts with Mound Road and the Oak Park tunnels. Interesting!
12:50 These large decks were constructed to accommodate the demands of orthodox Jewish residents in Oak Park who were opposed to the construction of the freeway because it would cut off their communities and limit walkability on the Sabbath. The three deck park tunnels were one of the many compromises MDOT had to make to construct the highly controversial segment of I-696 between Telegraph Rd and I-75

For those outside Metro Detroit, yes, this freeway is 2-3 miles from the Detroit city limits..and is still posted at 70 mph the entire way. As it should be. Other states could learn from this....I-465 in Indy, I'm looking at you.
Any chance you can do I-275 N and S Michigan?
