@7:04 Well that takes all the fun out of setting up a light. Half the fun is setting up a mole richardson fresnel and waiting to see when the barndoors fall. .
Finally, this product came into our country, and I bought it. 600D without F10 is a very different product. It's hard to carry a barn-door, because it's too big, but it's worth it!
Thank you for your reviews- especially on this. I have had mine in order since December. Hoping to get it soon. Looking at your review, I’m glad I went with this light and fresnel/barn door, looks like it will be a good bit of kit.
@@gaffergear That is great. I did get the Aputure 90 done as well. They just really seem to be making quality products. Also got a Kupo stand based on your review. It is fantastic as well! Keep up the great work.
7:00 What I like about this, it is NOT gonna fall out of the barndoor holder 7:09 VIOLENT SHAKES INTENSIFIES. My PTSD of arri 18k barndoors coming off almost slicing my face when shaping the light: GOOD GOD MAN, STOP WHAT ARE YOU DOING.
Many thanks Andrew. I know you kinda touched on this in the video, however could you use this 10 inch fresnel on the 300(X) range of Aputure lights and get a better output than its 'X2 Fresnel' unit , or is this built just for the 600D?
Not sure this would be useful at this point but I contacted the US Account Manager for Aputure with the same question. This was the reply... The F10 Fresnel is optimized for the LS 600d PRO and Ls 600x PRO. You can use it on the other COB Bowens mount fixtures such as the 120d, 300d, and 300x. Those are optimized for the Fresnel 2x. The F10 Fresnel on these fixtures would result in the beam angle listed on the F10 Frenel’s side to be inaccurate. You will get a wider beam pattern with the Fresnel 2x.
The F10 is awesome. But a 60 degree beam angle on the 2.5k HMI is heaps wider than 45 on the F10. If you move the aputure back to 4.18M to match the area of coverage of the HMI the LUX of the Aputure drops to about 5100. So realistically it is half as bright as the 2.5K is you need to cover a larger area with light.
I appreciate what Aputure is doing, they are single-handedly reinventing lighting for prosumer, corporate and many areas of broadcast video production! There's still room for other vendors for film and broadcast to "shine" with their current and new products.
@Gaffer & Gear Is the right edge of the beam considerably warmer than the rest, or am I seeing things? Around a fifth of the beam of my 1st gen 300d head is warm, and that's a replacement for my original head unit that went completely warm after a year of use. That's made me hold off on buying a 600d Pro (although I have used rented 300d IIs without seeing this issue). How has your 300d II held up?
My HMI Fresnel lights, and all my other daylight Fresnels have the same warm edge too, so it must be something to do with fresnel optics with daylight fixtures.
Absolutely great video, thank you. Do you have any videos where you talk about the optics being crisp coming through the window? I'd like to know more about what exactly you're noticing and why its nicer than a par at flood but not at spot?
Great video! You mention a relationship between the Fresnel size and the light chip. How would this compare on a similar light to the Aputure, such as the Forza 500, Forza 720 or Godox M600 do you know? If you wanted/needed to mix up kit?
It could affect the flood/spot range. But this F10 is so heavy most lights couldn't take it. And the rear optic can hit the COB on some lights and stop in mounting
@@johanlindqvist99 Yeah, and the M18 is open face, no Fresnel lens cutting down the output. But can't wait to see where we are with LEDs in 10 years from now. Image a single 1800W COB with a large Fresnel and even higher efficiency then today (like 240 lumen/W) - just through technology advancements. That would be 6 times the output of the 600D.
@@robertniessner554 I wonder if its gonna be a limitation of cooling or size to create such a huge COB, but it would be lovely. Love my 600d as much as the M18. I am not using any 1.2K HMIs anymore, promising future.
@@robertniessner554 That makes real sense! Does being open face mean it's harder to cut with barn doors because the light source becomes bigger than the bulb?
@Stefan Scherperel I know the tener-led. But it got crappy light quality compared to latest LEDs and is super heavy. And it focuses from 55° to 10° and can only double its output at full spot? But at least they improved CRI a bit, 3 years ago daylight version only had a CRI of 85. Came out 2016, btw.
Fantastic review as usual. One issue. I'm pretty sure those are not 10" scrims. I got some used 10" scrims to go with my F10 and they're too small for this setup. What size were you using in the review? Thanks for another practical review filled with expert advice.
Very helpful review, thanks again Andrew. Based on your review of the 60D I have ordered two of them and looking forward to compare them to my Dedo DLED7s. But I was holding back my order for the 600D waiting for your review of its accessories. My question: Does the F10 Fresnel now come in its own bag? Or how can we protect it for transportation? I am not expecting it to fit into the 600D's bag, right?
@@gaffergear thats is really good to know thank you so much! Will be looking into the 1200 evoke nanlux or anything that apurture comes up with to compete!
Incredible review, as always, thank you so much! Regarding the F10 fresnel, is it specifically made for the 600D or is it usable on other aputure light such as the new 200D?
Thanks for another great in depth video, Andrew! Can you explain why it is not going to replace an M18 any time soon? I mean, if used with the F10, the 600d will be brighter at medium spot according to your readings.
Because that's the brightness of an M18 at full flood. You start spotting and it gets very toasty. But the reason you want more light is you can manipulate it. With the M18 you can diffuse it or bounce it to simulate different sky scenarios while still maintaining stop. That being said, I ordered two of these specifically to replace renting M18s. Since a lot of the time you're relamping with 1200 bulbs to be safe on home outlets anyway and most shoots don't need that much stop since we're shooting more open and I've noticed a trend in wanting harder light. 🤪
@@martinhvideos Look. All I'm saying is that if you really want to push light from a 12x ultrabounce through a window, you could use two of these, plug them into the same stinger, never worry about blowing a circuit, get more output, and all at less than half the price of one M18...just saying...
@@lightswitchvideo I keep forgetting you guys are 120v. In that regard the 600d makes a lot more sense for you guys. Australia is officially 230v +10% to -6%, so most times it's 240v , which means I can run a 2.5K HMI from a domestic power outlet.
A friend said that in order to get the max output from 300Dmk2 I should use F10 instead of X2 on it. He said fresnel X2 was developed for 120D mk2 and it is not wide enough to cover 100% of the 300d mk2 COB.. Is that true?
@@mr.kalife5535 I don't think the brand really matters as long as it is established. I use manfrotto/avenger and Kupo My advice is to go with a steel stand (not aluminium) if you want to go high up. It will flex a lot less
Would you recommend using one of these if you're shooting into a silk or making a booklight, or is it better to use the regular reflector or bare cob, but closer to the diffusion because of the spread?
would you recommend using 600d with the f10 fresnel as key light on a stage for live streaming? if yes how many would you use for a stage that is 18 meters wide and 5 meters deep with a led wall at the back? would really really appreciate your help.
18m wide is very wide, and I guess you want to keep the light off the LED background (which is why you are thinking Fresnels). Unfortunately I can't give you a straight answer as it depends on venue layout. But these are the job quotes I have nightmares over.
I have the F10 Fresnel and Barn doors. I saw people on an aputure group that managed to actually fit the fresnel IN the 600D case. (Not the barn doors) I followed suite so now I don't have to load up the F10 drum case... however. I would have to put the original dish reflector the 600D comes with somewhere else if I wanted to still bring it. BUT having the fresnel, is there any reason one might still want to bring the OG reflector? Or leave it at home going forward? Only reason i could think to still keep the dish is lighter and quick to setup?
Thanks for this review and the stats! Any chance you can post the reading of the 600D vs the 2.5K HMI at 6-9 meters? I'm seeing that the throw of an LED isn't as far as a tungsten or HMI so I'm curious how the 600D would fare at longer distances.
I think I know what is going on here! I haven't got this problem with my kits. I'm lighting studios with skypanels where I used to use 2k tungsten. My Dedo LED throw the same as the old tungsten. I've had various small LED Fresnels over the last ten years and they throw the same, if not better, as the 200 HMI they replaced. The Forza 500 Fresnel throws as I would expect, and this 600D throws like I would expect also, so on and so on. BUT..... from testing gear that did not make it onto the chanel, I suspect that some LED manufacturers have set up their lights to be super bright at 1m so they can make an amazing claim in their advertising about output. Then past 1 metre they scatter. 1st time I came across this I was blown away by what I saw as deceit. Ever since I do my readings a 3m.
That wouldn't make any sense, they're both emitting visible light. The only thing that could possibly make a difference is the beam angle, which with a good fresnel should be able to be matched for readings.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the overview. Re ruggedness/durability, do you think the 600d with fresnel attached could live on a van shelf without a case or would you be assembling/breaking down each time?
The barndoors come in a circular foam padding, I have cut this in half to make a cradle so I can leave these on my shelf in my van ready to go as a fresnel.
@@gaffergear Thanks Andrew. Maybe the weaker point is the connection at the bowens mount which doesn't exist on more traditional Fresnels but looks good so far.
Although this all sounds very good I will probably buy a second 300d ii and wait for the 600d ii in about 3 years. It has been shown that the improvements of the Aputure successors were enormous (120/300d ii) and you will certainly no longer see a hotspot in the 600d ii.
Hey Andrew. Love the review as always. I was wondering if it’d be at all possible to post your lux reading with a t stop value as well?
3 роки тому
There are black 2.0 colors out there that absorb way more light that most other black .... i just wonder why this is not used for the inside of the barn doors ... too fragile maybe idk ? There is also Vanta Back but i guess that is also too expensive, but it would absorb so much light that even the light of a laser pointer would disappear
Been waiting for your review on this, thank you. Can I please ask how is "the look" the aesthetic feel compared to an Arri Studio 2K. Will it look as good on people as the Arri Studio 2K is the fall off pleasing ? Especially as you said it has a hot spot. Can I ask did you try it on the Aputure 300D II because every one who owns one, like me, will want to know. One last thing. The barn doors I assume don't come with a case. Any ideas on what to keep them in to stop them getting scratched to hell. The scims are standard Arri (like) 10 inch aren't they ? One suggestion. You could put a link to this channel from your Instagram.
The doors come in a cardboard box with foam cutting. The hotspot is 7 to 10% so not perceivable to the eye. I only mentioned it because I wanted to specify I didn't take my readings in that spot. Except for beam angle not being as wide, it's aesthetics are what I would expect from any real fresnel fixture. I have some ARRI studio 5Ks and the hotspot in the 10F is way less than in those. The scrims used are from my M18 kit.
Wish a review (and compare to the 600d) to the Hive 575 Light. SSI Scoring, SkinTones and more ... i don‘t find many to the hive light, but want to know how good it is.
@@gaffergear Thanks for your answer! Hope you get one (or more) soon... the much higher price tag as a 600d and a price near to the arri orbiter, i‘m very interessted how good a hive 575 is :)
How well does the F10 work with the C300dmkii or other lights with smaller COB? I don’t need the output of the 600pro but like the softer hard light quality of the F10 as well as the barndoor. Thanks
im honestly surprised at the build and actual practicality of the barn doors, without the back spill and with it being secured well, it works better than the Arri HMI barn doors
Hey Andrew, can the f10 fresnel be used on a Nanlite forza 500bii? May pick up a second cob unit and was hoping this accessory would be cross compatible. Thanks!
You could with a speed ring, but you would need a deep softbox to fill the diffusion, but I suspect it may be getting too front heavy for the lock off.
Thank you very much! I’m looking for a big quadratic Softbox for the 600d. but there is nothing on the market. Do you now one like shimera 120x120 for Bowens mount. Would be so nice.
Can the aputure F-10 fresnel be used on the FORZA 500 light to improve light output? or should the FL-20G only be used with the FORZA 500 light? What happens when I combine these accessories?
For the Aputure 2x fresnel combined with barn doors compared to the Aputure spotlight mount is there a reason to have both or one over the other? I was looking to get the spotlight mount, but didn’t want to get the fresnel and barn doors if it was basically the same thing. I’m using a 300dii
They are both completely different lighting tools. It would take an episode to explain. In the old days i would have said go to a show room and have a play. But who has a show room these days
Great review. I'm going to predict that HMI's have less than a decade before you won't see them on anything but the biggest film productions. Do you agree?
My large van has gone from 10 HMIs down to 3 HMIs in just 4 years. I have 2 HMIs I'm going to try and sell soon. My.... 200 HMI Pars 400 ARRI Pocket Pars 575 Fresnels 575 Pars 1.2K Fresnels 1.2K pars .... All obsolete in my kits now. I only keep M18 and above. I'm bummed out by having to sell so much investment, but then I think about how much I've saved in lamp stock in 3 years
@@gaffergear Thanks for the answer. I already did some research and I'm going for Forza fresnel with Forza light so I don't mix brands and like you have said compatibility.
See "Shootout with Forza 500" at 1:30-- he tells you why he would choose one or the other with this accessory, If you want an overall choice from him (not based on the F10 he's reviewing here), he tells you in his 600D review.
I lot of people think I sit on the fence with these answers, I wish I could put photos here to show how I use them. My large van now has two Forza 500 and two 600d. The 600d I will use just with this F10 because if the amazing fire power, they have replaced my 1.2k HMI pars, and after a few months I will decide whether to sell my 2.5K HMI Fresnels depending on how many times I need a 60 degree spread. The Forza are so light weight, and when I don't need that fire power of the 600d with the F10 the Forza will be my go to because it's easier to move around and I'm getting too old to carry heavy shit. Plus it runs at full power of two v-mounts (for 50 minutes only) I think gaffers love Forza 500s because they are so small and light weight. I used them last week on boom arms to get sunlight through windows when we needed to hide the stands. I would not want to do that with a 600D and an F10 because they are just too heavy. But the 600D in combination with the F10 is twice as bright. And that's replacing larger HMI lights on set. So for example on my last job I was using both 600D to put sunlight on backgrounds with hard shadows. Previously that would have required two 2.5k Fresnels, that's about 3600 watt more power draw,I would have had to carry wind up stands not push up stands, twice the amount of shot bags, and had to carry heavy ballasts. And I could set my levels with lumin radio DMX without leaving the set. So they saved me a lot of hard labour and effort So it's like asking, if I could choose only a flat head screw driver or a Phillips head screw driver, which would I pick? It's annoying, but both is the answer for me. But without the F10, I would have no interest in the 600d
Hey Art, the firmware update is already on the Aputure website under the Support tab on the 600D Pro page. Additional High/Medium settings are introduced as consistent low-noise option for outdoor and indoor environments respectively. Do check it out! Cheers Jimmy
Hey from Tassie, I just got my F10 Fresnel and it's really hard to turn the focus. How much resistance is suppose to be on the spot/flood rotating ring?
They need a bit of stiffness, otherwise they would teliscope out when pointed down. With mine it's two hands, using all my hand, as in pressing in with my palms.
@@gaffergear Thanks a lot Andrew. Mine seems to be loosening up slightly the more I use it. I was comparing the stiffness to Aputures very own video at about 1:32. ua-cam.com/video/JDxJlR2J7_g/v-deo.html Love your videos Cheers Dave
Hey Andrew, After some use on a couple of shoots it it getting a little looser and I feel a little better about how it feels. There might be a planned break in period to maintain stiffness over a long period of time. On a side note I'm a little concerned that the 150 Dome I pre-purchased was a little too big after watching your video haha. Oh well, first world problems. Cheers Dave
Totally different tools, the fresnel is more like a flood light but with some control, where as the spotlight is a focused beam that would hero if you want a pattern on a wall or a beam through smoke. I should do a video on this. For me the Fresnel is a better all round tool. But if I did more stage work than the spotlight mount would be the better tool.
I still don't understand at the end you say the 600D can't compete with the M18, but on the readings the M18 only has 18,100 lux when with the F10 fresnel spotted the 600D comes in at 33,300 lux which is around twice as bright.
Optics on a 2.5K HMI Fresnel spotted to 45 degrees are very muddy. It would give you better output but no decent shadows or barn door cuts. I thought about having it in the review but I couldn't think of a situation where I would use a fresnel HMI spotted in from 60 to 45 degrees over using a HMI Par. So I figured for people who own a HMI Fresnel it would be an irrelevant figure for comparison. But they get an idea of the light level with the same shadow qualities, but clearly know it won't flood as much.
@@gaffergear Thanks for the info ! I guess my position is I never played with HMI... So I don't know the capability of them vs let say the 600d with the F10 Fresnel. I guess is as my job or project grow, is understanding of where a single, or two 600d isn't enough. My brightest light I have is the Aputure 300d mk1 (I had 2), and I must say I was underwhelm with it output, even before gelling or diffusing it ! The 600d finally seem to bridge a gap of being bright enough for most situation. But that said, I got 2 on order and I never played with it, so maybe I still won't find it powerful enough. It not like I don't managed, but I adjust my scene around my light, instead of managing my light around my scene. And I really wonder what type of output I really need so my light output with modifier and gel isn't a limitation for indoor narrative shoot that include a master shot and not just a single medium shot for youtube ;)
@@mochouinard if you get two F10s to go with those, you will have some very serious output, output that cost me $12,000 back in the day. I too was underwhelmed by the 300
@@gaffergear I think what you are saying about the optical quality when you start to spot certain lights is a very important consideration that is often overlooked as everyone focuses on raw brightness. In situations where you want to replicate the sun, you have to compare lights in a focus position that gives you crisp shadows - just like you are saying. That is actually one thing I noticed about my Dedolights, either tungsten or LED you can spot them up a bit and generally the shadow quality remains quite clean (although barn door cuts are still much better at full flood).
There's too much options now with LED. Can you recomend a Light Kit combining what you think are best options for small , low end commercials , corporate work, ?
Bicolor is the way to go 2 x Litepanels Astra 6x bicolor, 2 x Aputure 300x, falconeyes 18tdx, maybe a set of Aputure 60x will bring you a long way Ofcourse with a selection of diffusion and cutters
I wonder what kind of light can be a first light to invest in if you shooting alone, mostly interviews as the main point ever So if to choose from soft variants will it be optimal to choose something like 300d Or solid bicolor led panel? Of what brand? Of what size? Or soft/rolling bicolor panel?
@@AlexDerrick_DP thanks for your detailed answer. I am thinking what I monoblock like aputure 300 or nanlite 500 Will give more possapilies like soft box Or optical extension like this and shoot in bounce or defuser Book light and so on It is probably not compact if talking about small office room Or small space to put the light for green screen So soft led panels will take less space in a room and less weight in a bag But less varians we have Even we can use decision/ frost
I like your videos very much but why compare the Aputure with 45° and the HMI with 60° and say the HMI has only 19% more output, it is actually much more because it has a wider spread. A bundled light will allways be brighter but narrower - this is basic physics. P.S. Cudos that you dont measure in the hot spot. Manufacturer now does tend to do more fake reflectors that has huge hot spots to trick benchmarks. These reflectors are almost useless for daily work.
Why is every UA-cam reviewer an “indoor cat”, I need to know how well these fight the sun while doing ENG. Any body know of a reviewer that shoots in the field for practical examples?
@@gaffergear thanks for the link, unfortunately their stuff is all trade shows and controlled studio tests now. BTW, your channel is very good and I have been appreciative of the info I have gained.
@@bonnevillebagger9147 for ENG I think this set up may be a bit too heavy. Using it outside you would definitely need a heavy stand. And it only runs at 50% off batteries. It's definitely not my run and gun option, not just because of the weight, but the distribution of weight makes it awkward to move around when mounted to the stand.
@@gaffergear Thanks! I’m moving to Dayside after 15 yrs night side so I’m trying to “kit up”. When I was in Phoenix Az we had Arri M8’s on c stands, for live shots and planned pressers. @@gaffergear UP VOTE! :)
Great. Thank you.
Well done as always.
Great review thanks!
Hey 👋
Its always pleasure learning from you.
Can we use it with nanlite 720 d?
Absolutely great video, thank you. Do you have any videos where you talk about the optics being crisp coming through the window? I'd like to know more about what exactly you're noticing and why its nicer than a par at flood but not at spot?
Brilliant review.
Thanks!@@gaffergear
Cheers
any chance you tried the F10 fresnel on the nanlite?
Fantastic review as always!! I'm just curious, why is the M18 so much brighter than a 2.5K HMI?
New reflector in the M18 is one part it
@@johanlindqvist99 Yeah, and the M18 is open face, no Fresnel lens cutting down the output.
I just climbed over some shelves to find my 10“ fresnel scrim kits. You're right they are 12" diameter. The holder is wider than the lens
The bag doesn't fit the barn doors

Why will it not replace the M18 if the same lux is achievable with a F10 fresnel? Thank you for the review!
This achieves the same lux in spot as an m18 in flood. If you spot the M18 it then completely blows this out if the water.
I would doubt you would get the same optics, I would suggest asking on one of the many Aputure Facebook user groups.
@@gaffergear thank you so much 🙏🙏
Thanks for another great in depth video, Andrew!
@@lightswitchvideo Makes sense. Thanks Brandon!
Yeah. We do everything wrong here. 😂
A friend said that in order to get the max output from 300Dmk2 I should use F10 instead of X2 on it. He said fresnel X2 was developed for 120D mk2 and it is not wide enough to cover 100% of the 300d mk2 COB.. Is that true?
Curious if you can put a light dome on this at full power without any heat issues? Appreciate the review!
Great video! What C stand of light stand are you using?
I use steel combo stands.
@@gaffergear Can you recommend me a steel combo stand for my Aputure 600d with Aputure 150 light dome rig? Thanks so much!
@@mr.kalife5535 I don't think the brand really matters as long as it is established. I use manfrotto/avenger and Kupo
My advice is to go with a steel stand (not aluminium) if you want to go high up. It will flex a lot less
@@gaffergear Thank you so much!
@@gaffergear Thank you so much! You're a legend!
That wouldn't make any sense, they're both emitting visible light. The only thing that could possibly make a difference is the beam angle, which with a good fresnel should be able to be matched for readings.
Does it pair well with the nanlite forza 500? Or do you recommend using the nanlite fresnel for the forza? thanks
It won't fit on the Forza mount (I so wanted it too). But if it did I think the weight would tare a Forza 500 apart
Can the Aputure F10 be used on a Forza 500?
Nope, I tried, it won't fit and if it did it's way too heavy for the Forza construction

That comes down to the reflector and fresnell more than cob and fixture itself I think
Hey Andrew. Love the review as always.
I was wondering if it’d be at all possible to post your lux reading with a t stop value as well?
There are black 2.0 colors out there that absorb way more light that most other black .... i just wonder why this is not used for the inside of the barn doors ... too fragile maybe idk ? There is also Vanta Back but i guess that is also too expensive, but it would absorb so much light that even the light of a laser pointer would disappear
Does it work with the 300d ii aswell?
yes it work. but...too heavy for that
Been waiting for your review on this, thank you.

Plus it runs at full power of two v-mounts (for 50 minutes only)
I think gaffers love Forza 500s because they are so small and light weight.
So they saved me a lot of hard labour and effort
So it's like asking, if I could choose only a flat head screw driver or a Phillips head screw driver, which would I pick?
It's annoying, but both is the answer for me. But without the F10, I would have no interest in the 600d

How do you compare It"s fersnel vs spotlight mount ?
Totally different tools, the fresnel is more like a flood light but with some control, where as the spotlight is a focused beam that would hero if you want a pattern on a wall or a beam through smoke. I should do a video on this.

I still don't understand at the end you say the 600D can't compete with the M18, but on the readings the M18 only has 18,100 lux when with the F10 fresnel spotted the 600D comes in at 33,300 lux which is around twice as bright.
You can also spot the M18. An M18 spotted will give you 75,000 lux @ 3m.
@@gaffergear Thanks for the clarification!
Why not provide the 2.5k HMI value at 45degree for example ?

Ofcourse with a selection of diffusion and cutters

So if to choose from soft variants will it be optimal to choose something like 300d
Or solid bicolor led panel?
Of what brand?
Of what size?
Or soft/rolling bicolor panel?
@@AlexDerrick_DP thanks for your detailed answer. I am thinking what I monoblock like aputure 300 or nanlite 500
Will give more possapilies like soft box
Or optical extension like this and shoot in bounce or defuser
Book light and so on
It is probably not compact if talking about small office room
Or small space to put the light for green screen
So soft led panels will take less space in a room and less weight in a bag
But less varians we have
Even we can use decision/ frost
isn't the secret material Nylon!?
It's a mix, can't say.
