    Hello sir, I know this has nothing to do with the above video but I just found you because of your helpful Gaffer tips on all kind of stands from a while ago. I'm working as a photographer and always wondered what kind of Gaffer, Grip & Gear on set "etiquettes" and "do's & don'ts" there are and what kind of common mistakes. Maybe you can use this as an idea for a new video, compile a bunch of things you do on set to avoid problems or quickly solve them / what to do to not look like a fool while unpacking or tips to avoid scratching surfaces and such. really solid channel btw, keep it up. :)

    I've been waiting for this review for quite awhile. Excellent work as always! So just to clarify, is the delay in dmx response a direct result of the dmx smoothing? If so, is there not an option to turn off the smoothing on the Nova 600c like other fixtures?

      I think a negative review at B&H( It has just 3 reviews total) killed the sales of the P600c. Some guy claimed it was just a 1/4 stop brighter than the p300c. Either the guy doesn't know what he's doing or has a damaged unit, because in all my tests it's easily twice as bright as the P300c.

      IMO it’s definitely the best option if you’re not going to go the sky panel route and assuming you don’t want the punch/heft of the vortex. Better than a Gemini for sure which has been the standard “sky panel replacement” for years now.

      @@cfl4286 Im curious to see how the vortex 8 (open) compares lux wise with the p600c. it falls short with the cream dome but that dome is rather creamy indeed. Either way if i wanted something hard and colourful, i will use the 600c or a hmi with gel which i still love doing.

    • @cfl4286
      @cfl4286 Рік тому

      @@willchurchill7931 it’d probably blow it away. But the punchiness of the vortex is pretty easily eclipsed by the 600c and especially the Orion 675, so as an owner op it’d probably make more sense to go with one of those seeing as how you can diffuse them easily, they’re lighter and more versatile. The vortex I could see being amazing on big sets where you can rig a bunch of them to lifts and have a big punchy rgb source in the sky.

    Regarding the delta uV in the CCT measurements, doesn't the TM-30 spec have a linear transition from Planckian to Daylight between 4000 & 5000K? Asking so I can understand how you determined the deviation once you got into the daylight values (and how to interpret my own C800 readings). It seems like the reported duV should be referencing the daylight curve by default above 5000k

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Рік тому +2

      If you click one of the squares on the basic text page you can select the DuV option and get the numbers from there.
      The DuV number always refers to variation from the plankien curve as that was the standard.
      Daylight curve is at somewhere around +0.0032 DuV from they plankien curve. Not exactly sure. I can't get a straight answer out of anyone.
      In terms of +/- green readings or gel corrections some spectrometers read from the daylight curve and some from the plankien curve. I can't remember which brand does which but if I use my sekonic and my UPRtec I get different gel correction numbers at daylight, but similar numbers at tungsten.
      Most lighting manufacturers (including Aputure) now tend to start shifting away from the plankien curve at about 4000K to near the daylight curve or in between the plankien and daylight curve at 5000K+. But the Nova P600c was made just before Aputure adopted this trend and is closer to the plankien curve.
      Some manufacturers have been pushing for a Film & TV to be decided on. A curve that follows the plankien at 3200K but then moves up to the daylight curve at 5600k
      Until recently the plankien curve was the holy grail of lighting manufacturers because it is a continuous standard (below and above 5000K).
      But, the majority of camera manufacturers have pointed out that they follow the daylight curve. For example D55 means 5500K on the daylight curve. D5000 means 5000K on the daylight curve and D65 means 6500k. So lighting is trying to match to cameras now and not super heated metal which is what Kelvin measurements is based on.
      The plankien curve, or black body curve, is relative to super heated mentals. Way before spectrometer technology existed. The Daylight curve is based on actual sunlight readings.
      The TM-30 scores are regardless of which curve you follow. Think if colour render scores as being correct if the camera is white balanced to the light. For example years ago you could have a light with a TLCI score of 98 but it was green.
      I hope this has helped, I only know this from having very long conversations with colour science people from different brands after they have taken issue with my older reviews.
      This is why I give a comparison at 5600K to both curves. Because people are split about which is correct as a standard.

    Can you share some methods on measuring color render, CCT?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  4 місяці тому +2

      For reviews I run the lights in for hours to make sure the phosphor is bedded in. Minimum 1 hour at 3200 and 5600, but usually a couple of hours for each plus also at bottom and top CCT as well. This also gives me a chance to listen to fan noise and things like that.
      I take no more than 10 readings at a time, then I rest the meter for 45 minutes to an hour otherwise I find the meter will drift slightly as the sensor gets hot.
      I store the meter inside my house (not the workshop overnight) as I find temperature change can affect the readings.
      I let the light settle for about 1 minute at each target value before I take a reading. If it's a high power light (1200+) I let it settle for 10 to 15 minutes at important readings like 3200 and 5600 because the hue can drift in the first few minutes on the super powerful LEDs.
      At the end of a meter session I will take the 1st reading from that session again to verify the readings are close and correct.
      Depending on the type of light I may be 1 to 3 meters away to ensure all the colours have mixed correctly.
      Of course the room is blacked out and I never wear bright coloured clothing.
      I find my spectrometers last about 2 years then I can't trust the readings. The accuracy would still be good for on set, but not accurate enough for gear reviews.
