How To Make a Shoulder Plane With Skewed Iron A Collaboration with BearKat Wood

  • I have been wanting to make one of these for a wile then Brian with BearKat Wood flipped the challenge back on Me what happens next was a lot of fun!
    The Body and wedge were made from ash. and the Iron was a hand forged iron that came out of a plane body that would no longer function.
    This was a collaboration with BearKat Wood and if you want to see the plane he built go check it out here.

    This Shoulder plane was made from a hand forged iron I picked up a bit ago. it was made at least 150 years ago. the body had been beaten up and it needed a new life

    I too have an old scewed shoulder plane, heavy blade and the most extreme hollow grind I've seen on anything. The blade is 3/16" and doesn't appear to be worn down at all. Whoever made it spent a bunch of time on the conical mouth. A delight to use.

    Many thanks for this video..Have you plans for building a plane like this?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 років тому +1

      +Carlo Pieracci No, because it all depends on the iron you get. This one has a 45 degree bed that is skewed 30 degrees. Even the angle of the wedge can be whatever you want I usually make mine 1":4"

  • @genardusfaberus6514
    @genardusfaberus6514 4 роки тому +1

    Hi, very nice work! enjoyed the video. Just a quick question, I guess making the 30 degree angle in the other way (chips goind out on the right) is just a matter of taste? or there is some reason? Thank you in advance.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 роки тому +1

      It just depends on which side wall you want to be the one that goes into the corner. It is traditional that most woodworkers were right-handed and so it's slightly more convenient for it to be on the right side of the plane

    Nice editing Mr Underhill Jr ;)
    What does: 'i adjusted a few things' mean? How did you make it work better?
    That plane is awesome. Great curls. How did the old plane cut?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 років тому

      +Willem Kossen LOL Thanks! the bed was not perfectly flat so the iron chattered a bit. that made it skip and jump through the cut. also the wedge had a slight gap at its tip where a chip got cought so I had to plane it down a bit more.
      The old plane did not cut. That is where I got the iron. but the old one was so rotten that it would no longer hold the blade. sad, but I gave it a new life in ash!

      +Wood By Wright any suggestions on where to find a little more info? Blade type? Thanks!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 років тому

      +donny carter The blade I pulled from that old body I was holding at the beginning. the body had apparently been left outside and was rotten. but the blade was hand forged and well over 100 years old. you can buy most any blade from Lee Valley here www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=43698&cat=1,41182

    A great tool you made there, nice work. only the printed carving template was a bit of a cheat in my opinion I'm shure you could have pulled it off without judging by your skills.. cheers.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 років тому

      thanks! I use to do draw it by hand and do some times. but I enjoy using the patern for some reason. which I find odd because I almost never use a patern for saw handles and most people do. guess I am just odd. LOL!

    • @daki222000
      @daki222000 8 років тому

      I just noticed it because i thought the challenge was no power tools, and I figured the computer and printer are. just to give your challenger some ammunition.lol. I'l subscribe to your channel.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 років тому

      +Flip de boer one of the odd things about unplugged is there are so many different lines you could draw. to be honest I have people tell me I should not have lights in my shop, but then the camera does not work well and I do not like the idea of torches in my basement around wood curls. lol but for this one we both used patterns at one time or another. funny thing is Brian used a pattern for the body and free handed the carving. I used it for the carving but free handed the body. Thanks for watching! and if there is ever something you want to see just ask!

      I'm sorry what exactly do you want to see? It's a pretty simple device with just two pieces of wood and a blade of iron. I don't think there is much else that I could show.
