  • In this next route learning video we take an Intercity HST in the early to mid 1990s from York to Peterborough along the ECML Modern route recently released by Creative Rail. We follow the real life timetable of train 1Y84, the 12:03 York to London Kings Cross service. Although the scenario is set in Intercity days, all trains are set to run to the current timetable.

    I'm going to miss the HST's and 91's on the ECML when the 800's come along. The 91's and HST's always felt like getting on a proper train, which can't be said for the more modern desiros, voyagers etc...

    I believe that at the angled concrete does bridge between the Selby line junctions there was a serious accident, near Great Heck. A car driver fell asleep at the wheel, crossed agricultural land and ended up on the permanent way. He got out and tried to warn of the danger but in the meantime an oncoming passenger train collided with his vehicle and was derailed. A few moments later a freight train traveling in the opposite direction also ran into the wreckage. I can't recall the casualty figures, but they were significant. Subsequently a survey of over bridges was carried out and measures taken to prevent similar occurrences were taken.

    The skew border bridge as you leave York is the Holgate Road bridge. This bridge had to be lifted when the line was electrified, causing major road traffic disruption in the city.

    whilst you're right about the direction of the Retford low level platforms being Lincoln to the East and Worksop and Sheffield to the West, there IS a link between the ECML and there. just North of Platform 2 at Retford there is a curve that goes around and joins to the Lincoln/Sheffield line. it's very tight and 142 / 144 stock have been known to get stuck there. Some of the first and last Sheffield services of the day start on P2 and use this curve.

    Train Simulator should create the East Coast Mainline from King's Cross - Inverness from all different time periods.. not even to mention smaller things that connect with it, Lincoln Line, Lincoln, Hull, Skegness, Cleethorpes, etc.. Just a thought there!

    Few extra bits and pieces: British Rail hired their first female train driver in 1983. Mallard did indeed reach 126mph in 1938 but aGerman electric train had already reached 130mph the previous year, so it wasn't the fastest a train had ever gone at the time. An Italian electric train also clocked 126mph in 1936, I should add! Also, as far as I'm aware the flashing green was not given an extra lamp on the signal head but was simply set up so that the existing green light would flash (rather similar to flashing single and double yellows).

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому +2

      I didn't know that it was 1983 when the first female driver was hired! I thought it may have been earlier. Female drivers today are still hard to find, but I do see them occasionally. My guess is that it's because driving trains as a job just doesn't appeal to women on the whole? I didn't know about the German electric train having already reached 130mph at that time. Indeed, the flashing green wasn't an extra lamp, it was just part of the normal green lamp. Maybe I worded it badly, but I was trying to say it was an extra signal aspect, not an extra light on the signal. I remember seeing the flashing green aspects when standing at Helpston level crossing just north of Peterborough around 5 or 6 years ago. I think it's only more recently they finally removed the flashing green aspect.

    Sorry to post again, but I posted the last from memory and wasn't satisfied that my recall was correct. Having checked I am pleased to say that I was but some detail was lacking. There's a good report on Wikipedia not you want more detail. An interesting fact s that the combined speed of impact was estimated to be 142 mph, the highest recorded for a head on collision on rails in the UK. The car driver was prosecuted and sent to prison for 5 years for causing dear by dangerous driving.

    Great video as always Pete! This is my favourite train, I like the styling which still looks good today, 40 years after them coming into service.
    As I understand it they were originally classed as 253s and 254s as they were seen as a complete train set.
    Surprised you didn't go for a class 225 set though? :-)

    Great video, nothing beats a Valenta HST for me really! While not strictly pertinent to your video, I have been wondering whether or not the physics of the Train Simulator HST model are accurate compared to real life. I found that while stopping distance is pretty much correct (125mph to a stand in 1,930 yards with full service brake application, compared to 2,200 yards for older loco-hauled trains with tread brakes from just 100mph, hence why HSTs can run faster on some stretches of track compared to other trains), the acceleration is way off. An HST should reach 100mph from a stand in 3 mins 15, and 125mph in a further 4 mins (7 mins 15 seconds overall). The TS HST takes a frankly ridiculous 10 mins 30 a full 3 and a quarter minutes too long to reach 125mph. So here's hoping someone fixes the HST so it's possible to reach 125mph without running out of track!!! Also, I don't know if you are aware, but the set you were driving was labelled as a Class 254 on the front, until the mid-80s the HSTs were considered DMUs with the 2+7 Western Region sets classified Class 253 and the 2+8 Eastern and Scottish Region sets Classified Class 254. The HSTs were later reclassified as loco-hauled trains with Mk3 coaches and Class 43 locomotives but the HST Mk3s are still referred to as trailer cars. The sets were originally formed as Class 253: DMB-TF-TF-TRUB-TS-TS-TS-TS-DMB and Class 254: DMB-TF-TF-TRUK-TS-TS-TRSB-TS-TS-DMB. After complaints from guards about riding in the rear power car one TS in each set was replaced by a new-build TGS and the extra TS vehicles were used for spares and to lengthen some sets. By the early 1980s there was no longer a requirement for two catering vehicles in the ECML sets and so the TRUKs were removed and converted to Loco-hauled Mk3 catering vehicles (RFM). The remaing catering vehicles in both ECML and GWML sets were fitted with First Class seating and an extra TS was added to the GWML sets. Cross-country and Midland Mainline routes were given HST services by 1982 with Inverness being served from 1983.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      That Valenta scream! I loved the sound of these engines, it really is so nostalgic and brings back so many childhood memories. I'm not entirely sure the physics are correct. It really does take forever to get to 125mph! But at the same time, when driving on the Western Mainlines route I can achieve 122mph by West Drayton when heading out of London - in real life we hit 125mph at that point, so it didn't seem too far from accurate. I was indeed aware that the HSTs used to be considered DMUs, and it was only when they were reclassified as locos that they became Class 43s.

      Para Plays Depends on what you like :P
      Good diesel route for the UK would be Riviera Line (Exeter to Paignton), comes with lovely scenery and a great little pacer. If you're more in to British commuter rail London - X would be good, I would probably say the Chatham Main Line. If you are just there for lots of track for relatively cheap get the Western Mainlines from www.justtrains.com . Its really well made, and has London Paddington - Bristol - Exeter/Cardiff, as well as the rural lines around Bristol (Bristol-Severn Beach is also on this channel) and the route to Oxford. If you want InterCity era trains get the WCMLN Carlisle to Glasgow, comes with a Class 86.

    While yes, 50fps footage is, for the most part, a lot smoother than 30fps, most monitors are 60hz (60fps) and because 60 does not divide easily into 50, 50fps footage can look a bit jarring at times as they remain on the screen for an uneven amount of time per frame, so 60fps is much better where possible. But I understand this was beyond your control and constant frame drops would have a worse effect. Nice video as usual in lots of detail :D
    (Just a computer nerd passing through)

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      Thanks for the info there, I honestly had no idea about 50fps potentially making the video look slightly jarring. I will bear that in mind for future videos. Indeed, when I tried to record this at 60fps I struggled to get a stable frame rate even more than at 50fps - even though when not recording I was getting an average 90 to 120fps! Thanks for your comment :)

    When where the HSTs reclassified from Class 254 to Class 43?

    • @Aidankiwi
      @Aidankiwi 8 років тому +1

      Sometime in the early 1990s I think. The HSTs were originally classified 253 and 254. Class 253 was the designation for the Western Region sets (the Class number was applied to the entire set as the were regarded as multiple units at that time as opposed to separate locomotives) and Class 254 for the Eastern Region and Cross country sets. Some of the Eastern Region sets were in fact allocated to Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh, which of course was in BR's Scottish Region. Originally there was no Midland Mainline allocation.

      Dayl Cunnignham Probably not since they will have different origin points making it very hard and since Train Sim is only 32 bit, it can't handle more than about 130-140 miles of track with scenery, and that's without too much detail

    May I just ask, if you are going to use an Intercity HST, why not just buy the British Rail era version fo this route? Otherwise it just looks odd, this would have been perfect done with that Virgin '100 years of Craigentinny' HST Power Car repaint maybe available from Bluecode set in 2015/2016.

      I have the BR era version of this route and made a video on it in the Deltic. That route was set in the 1970s/1980s before electrification of the building of the Selby cutoff. This route could also be a BR era version as electrification was completed around 1989/1990, a whole five years before privatisation. This is why the Class 91 appeared in Intercity livery. This route looked just like this when I was a kid, so there's nothing odd looking about this scenario to me. It's barely changed in the last 25 years! :)

      True, and not very common to see this style. Many prefer using non electrified BR era routes when using BR era stock. Nice to see something different and focusing on a different time frame.

    A bit disappointed with the scenery setup around Peterborough compared to ECML peterborough to kings cross. Otherwise the video was entertaining and informative as usual.

      +K1ZZA87 The zipped download should contain a .RWP file. If you follow the very first part of my reskin installation tutorial and ignore the rest of the video, it tells you how to install .RWP files :)
