the fact that hidamari is an art show really helps the viewer think in an artist's perspective and realize just how creative and artistic Shaft is 💯 so much love, fun and talent put into this anime. most underrated slice of life and great video :) not to mention s3 opening makes my day every time but theyre all goated

If you have patience you can really appreciate the show in the long run. I didn’t really even know how to feel about it at first, but it’s a super enjoyable slice of life. I feel like it’s a must watch if you’re into slice of life. Japan must have liked it a lot for it to get 4 seasons, multiple specials and OVAs.
I learned of Shaft from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. They are one of the few studios that really pop out to me. Another studio that pops out to me is Trigger, mostly because of how they animate action scenes. I like their high octane style.
Trigger has also been one of my favorites. I dissed Promare a bit in the video but I actually do love the movie. It’s mainly the insane blend of animation styles and the soundtrack that do it for me. The story and characters are sadly a tad butchered. You’re now the third person to bring up Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei so I’ll have to bump that up on my watchlist.

I've seen a lot of spoiled kids who think every anime needs to have smooth and riveting animation to be amazing. I've seen younger people with less care about narrative quality over animation quality and, personally, narrative quality has always been at the forefront of my interest in a story's quality. You can look as beautiful as you want, but if the story disappoints me, the series disappoints me.
You are more interested in writing then, which is good! So is an interest in animation, which is also good! I care about both, sometimes it’s good to find a balance, while to much of a focus on one or the other brings the other down. Sometimes it is done if the story is lacking a bit like in demon slayer, where the story is generic, but the animation really makes it stand out due to it being ufotable
My favorite real world image scene in Shaft anime has to go to the cake splitting scene in like ep2 of Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei, literally a video of someone dropping cake into a blender. I also like how Shaft replicates the manga style of what they are adapting to a T, seeing the range from like Dance in the Vampire Bund, Zetsubou Sensei, to Natsu no Arashi.
I’ve never seen Zetsubou Sensei but I’ll definitely put it on my list. I was wondering why the art style looked so familiar until I found out Kōji Kumeta also wrote Kakushigoto. Loved the anime for that one so I’ll definitely give it a shot. Shaft definitely replicates source material super well, even for light novels that have little to no art.

Hidamari is one of my favorite anime as well, particularly season one and it's many Shaftisms. One of my favorite things about it is the non chronological episode order which was probably also in part due to the limited budget. Liked the video!
Glad you enjoyed it! I was really looking for an opportunity to talk about Hidamari, and this was a good way to do so. I never thought about it like that, but the non chronological order may have been to highlight some of the more interesting chapters of the manga with the limited budget the season had. It’s a shame they abandoned it after 365 but it would have been hard to introduce Nori and Nazuna otherwise.
I haven’t watched past its first episode yet, but Maria Holic’s openings are truly something else. Its first opening in particularly is hands down my favorite opening ever, the energy, animation, and color scheme just perfectly compliment each other and show the studio’s style well.

God I adore every single one of these techniques, I feel like they engage my brain way more than even the most fluid animation ever can. Part of it is that I seem to care about vibes and impressions a lot, so even the shots you called jarring and the black screens I either don't mind or I love them to death. At the same time I'm a pleb who only recently started to notice animation quality at all, and my brain seems happy to interpolate or fill the gaps so I rarely even realize when something doesn't supposedly look all that great. All this to say, Shafts animation style is the GOAT and I feel like it's perfectly tailored to my preferences that I didn't even know I had.
Man the quality of this video is insane! It saddens how a good work like this didn't get mych views, but it also makes me happy because I know something incredible that only a few people know 😌

I had no clue what Kemono Friends was so I had to look it up. Looks like it has a super low budget but a cult following. There are definitely shows with worse budgets than the ones I talked about, I’d love to find more cuz for some reason it’s an interesting topic to me.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is my favorite anime of all time. Shaft framing and "camera" work is absolutely godtier, I would absolutely love to see someone try to emulate that style in liveaction. I actually kind of think the TV version of Bakemonogatari is superior to the BD.

4:10 The Soultaker is important in the history of Shaft. You should definitely watch it. Hell the influence of Soultaker on Monogatari is probably its own video. The Soultaker's budget was very low. Shinbo essentially invented or pioneered a lot of the techniques mentioned in this video, while working on that project. The Soultaker is also his first project (iirc) working with Monogatari's character designer and animation director, Akio Watanabe.
Aside from the creativity of the animation studio, I think it helps that most non-action anime doesn't need to be technical in presentation. Shounen anime get hate whenever they stray from the source, whereas SoL get praised for trying something new.
Yeah that’s definitely true. Shounen walks a thin line because of an over critical fan base and necessary profit. SoL gets a pass on animation for the most part. I guess my point was that style is just as important. Fancy animation shouldn’t be everything a show has to offer. I mean the reason One Punch Man Season 2 failed was mainly because the staff was entirely different, not because the animation was worse. Madhouse animated the first season at a godly level, but the charm from the direction of that first season was entirely lost in the second. Both aspects are important, but some people really only care about the animation.
Aside from the creativity of the animation studio it helps the parent take a careful step in their next step but not when they were there because you have to stop questioning on her fake promises all that we have to do is shut the mouth and pay money or your degree will be with her

I absolutely adore the artistic flair of the monogatato anime series. Every shot is filled with so much aesthetic beauty amd geniia direction. Studio shaft is definitely one of the most iconic studios out there.
I constantly go back to yuno's fever dream and rewatch the episode when i'm feeling down. There's just something about it that makes me feel better every single time I watch it. I feel like it speaks perfectly to the cold, dead, shriveled corpse of my inner child somehow. The episode perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a kid home sick from school with a fever. The absurd imagery, stream of consciousness style narrative, and shaft's unique art and direction style never fails to capture my attention, and by the end of it, I feel better; like I was sick too and somehow got over it watching Yuno get better too.
I couldn’t agree with you more. That’s the episode I come back to the most. I love watching it while sick, it really does feel exactly like those sick days you spent at home when you were a child. Wonderfully stylized and perfectly delirious!

I've been watching a Shaft show recently (Paniponi Dash) and I was thinking about how it had such an interesting artstyle likely as a result of a low budget. Looks like that's probably true

One of the other shaft anime that shows how shaft uses budget short comings in a stylistic manner is Sayonara Zetsubou sensei S1. With the same reused “I am in despair” scene. And with ost just being mostly what we would call today meme sounds. But its way more stylistic is certain scenes and it rather than feeling like they are saving budget it feels like the staff were having fun with the show. With random stuff written in every scene cut showing on the blackboard. Its other than madoka and monogatari my fav shaft’s work. It feels soo unique compared to most of todays anime. It feels quite elitist thing to say but. It is artistic in a sense. The same way whenever you see trigger or gainax works you can clearly see its them or see a kyoani flair in haruhi, kobayashi, k-on and such. And i love that fact about such anime. Recently i have seen many people complain about certain shows looking exactly the same or like certain artist’s character having the exact same design. A very extreme case being takashi takeuchi’s design of any female character looking like a saber copy. But i love that. To me i love realizing the work i am watching or reading is from a certain creator without even looking at the name of creator or studio or artist. But to bring my rant to a close. We need more things like shaft from the 2000’s but sadly that era has come and gone and that era feels soo foreign to how most modern anime has become. And I guess that is a good thing. Maybe. P.s. shaft needs to do monster season and off season soon please. I need more mono content.
Someone else here mentioned Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. That’s one that I need to get around to because I’ve heard it has quite a lot of Shaft flair. I too like it when you can tell who made the particular work just by the style or character designs. Each studio has their own flair, and I’ve noticed the ones like Kyoani. Although it’s a bit disappointing that the older era of anime is gone, the writing of modern shows outperforms many from the early 2000s. Sometimes the style is missing, but the content is really good. If anything though, shows like Bocchi are proof that people still love odd artistic and directorial choices. On a side note: I didn’t watch all of it, but I remember the Pretty Boy Detective Club having a lot of Shaft Flair. So it seems some of their recent work is still carrying on old traditions.
On the point of knowing who the anime is directed and the shaft flair. Call of the night is an amazing example. Its a non shaft anime but has alot of shaft flair cause its directed by Tomoyuki Itamura sensei. And if you look carefully it especially exudes the effects of the owarimonogatari and tsukimonogatari cause he directed those two too. With how that anime uses backgrounds with almost no character to its advantage as its nights and playing with colors to show different atmosphere which is similar to nekomonogatri’s tone setting. And how the karaoke scene in the call of the night is similar to the classroom scene with ougi in owarimonogatri. If you know who directed it and are fimiliar with the director’s previous works you can clearly see the effect of how ones style pass through from one work to the next(sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious). I find that very interesting and intriguing.
I'm still thinking about how "we've been spoiled" lately Some studios release too much quality and make others suck in comparison It's like they shouldn't even try if they're not going to match the competition So many work hours spent on mediocrity that could go to something better instead Yeah, I'd sacrifice 10 or more unremarkable projects for 1 outstanding piece of art
It’s disappointing that sometimes studios will grab a property to make profit off of it, but end up grabbing many properties for that reason. They sacrifice quality for quantity, and then we get mediocre anime. That’s why I’m so surprised that MAPPA can keep up the quality they have with the quantity they grab. I agree though, I’d rather have an outstanding piece of art than many mediocre projects.
On AniDB Tatsuya Oishi is credited as design assistance and on MyAnimeList he has the credit of setting for Hidamari Sketch. So I'm guessing the real life objects in it could be his choice?

I have not but that length has me a little concerned XD. I didn’t think I could do a good job discussing the show itself so I decided to focus on the stylization instead. I’ll probably get around to watching it so thanks for the recc.
Mappa created the mess of an adaption of God of Highschool, which good animation can only so far on its own. Though to be honest IMO, the animation wasn't that great either, the composition of shots and frames feels very choppy at times and lacks fluid movement.
Mappa royally butchered the adaptation of God of Highschool. I enjoyed it when I watched it but the pacing was so bad I couldn’t understand anything that was happening. Mappa is often style over substance and while I think JJK’s Shibuya was done well, I can’t help but feel it lacked the polish that studios like Wit, Madhouse and Ufotable can produce. Ofc I’d hate for more polish to be pushed on the already abused employees at Mappa, but if they stopped accepting every project and slowed down for a moment I think their productions would be even better. I like Mappa’s anime, but the studio itself is far from being my favorite.
I actually don’t know how to feel about that one because David pro has been doing a stand up job on that show. If it’s true though, Shaft will certainly handle it well.
Studio Shaft is my FAVORITE!!! I love the surrealism art style that come outs of their shows sooo much... much more preferred over alot of popular mainstream anime, personally.

Sometimes the style is missing, but the content is really good. If anything though, shows like Bocchi are proof that people still love odd artistic and directorial choices.
On a side note: I didn’t watch all of it, but I remember the Pretty Boy Detective Club having a lot of Shaft Flair. So it seems some of their recent work is still carrying on old traditions.
On the point of knowing who the anime is directed and the shaft flair. Call of the night is an amazing example. Its a non shaft anime but has alot of shaft flair cause its directed by Tomoyuki Itamura sensei. And if you look carefully it especially exudes the effects of the owarimonogatari and tsukimonogatari cause he directed those two too. With how that anime uses backgrounds with almost no character to its advantage as its nights and playing with colors to show different atmosphere which is similar to nekomonogatri’s tone setting. And how the karaoke scene in the call of the night is similar to the classroom scene with ougi in owarimonogatri.
If you know who directed it and are fimiliar with the director’s previous works you can clearly see the effect of how ones style pass through from one work to the next(sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious). I find that very interesting and intriguing.

It’s disappointing that sometimes studios will grab a property to make profit off of it, but end up grabbing many properties for that reason. They sacrifice quality for quantity, and then we get mediocre anime. That’s why I’m so surprised that MAPPA can keep up the quality they have with the quantity they grab. I agree though, I’d rather have an outstanding piece of art than many mediocre projects.

On AniDB Tatsuya Oishi is credited as design assistance and on MyAnimeList he has the credit of setting for Hidamari Sketch. So I'm guessing the real life objects in it could be his choice?

Mappa created the mess of an adaption of God of Highschool, which good animation can only so far on its own. Though to be honest IMO, the animation wasn't that great either, the composition of shots and frames feels very choppy at times and lacks fluid movement.
Mappa royally butchered the adaptation of God of Highschool. I enjoyed it when I watched it but the pacing was so bad I couldn’t understand anything that was happening. Mappa is often style over substance and while I think JJK’s Shibuya was done well, I can’t help but feel it lacked the polish that studios like Wit, Madhouse and Ufotable can produce. Ofc I’d hate for more polish to be pushed on the already abused employees at Mappa, but if they stopped accepting every project and slowed down for a moment I think their productions would be even better. I like Mappa’s anime, but the studio itself is far from being my favorite.

I actually don’t know how to feel about that one because David pro has been doing a stand up job on that show. If it’s true though, Shaft will certainly handle it well.
Studio Shaft is my FAVORITE!!! I love the surrealism art style that come outs of their shows sooo much... much more preferred over alot of popular mainstream anime, personally.
