Missing in Adaptation
Goldy Pond is an extremely well loved part of The Promised Neverland, and likely many manga reader’s second favorite arc just behind Grace Field. Season 2 of the anime was expected to cover it, and considering how outstanding the quality of the first season was, hype was astronomically high. Unfortunately what we got instead was a piecemeal version of the remainder of the Promised Neverland story, all crammed together into an original mess of a second season.
While season 2 finished the story, albeit horribly, it failed to include the one section of the manga that readers were most excited for…
That section… was Goldy Pond
I’m not here to bash on the second season of The Promised Neverland. Nor am I here to compare it to how the manga plays out. What I’m here to do is to give you a taste of what the anime could have been by exploring Goldy Pond, an arc that has been Missing in Adaptation.

Missing in Adaptation Trailer
Переглядів 821Місяць тому
Goldy Pond is the only section of The Promised Neverland to be left un-adapted into an anime format. Although the remainder of the manga was ruined by the patchy version of it portrayed by season 2, I always felt that Goldy Pond got the roughest treatment. Therefore, I took it upon myself to detail what we missed out on with an original second season, rather than an adaptation. The video will c...

    Well, on a positive note at least season 1 can be seen as a ending? kinda... *sigh*. But honestly, what the frick where they thinking and tried to do?. What was even the point of them doing what they did, i would've drop myself into cold water and died if somebody tried to ruin my story what way. I was such a huge fan of the anime and manga and when they did the bunker scene and when i saw Norman, i just wanted to claw my brains out. It makes me so sad, Yugo.. and all other characters... hunders of chapters forced into one season...

      Yeah someone else pointed that out as well. I mainly used it as a good introduction talking point, but I was also ignorant enough to forget that there was an official term for it. Most people still shorten it to shonen though which would be inaccurate as it’s literally just a demographic

    i sometimes randomly remember that we will probably never get a faithful goldy pond animated adaptation and feel my heart break all over again 😭 i remember everyone was SO excited for s2 (even though i think there had been some leaks that had us dubious about it too) and then the collective confusion and upset/outrage was crazyyyyy. it could have been absolute peak, omg i’m upset all over again 💀

    Heard they skipped Goldy Pond for season 2 and never watched it out of spite. The ending of the manga was definitely rushed and disappointing. Seemed like the author was over writing it, and just made it end as soon as possible. Sad

    I remember when I first watched season 1 of promised neverland, it made me so excited for the next season and I immediately ran to read the entire manga, and fell in love, waiting for season 2 to give my self more to enjoy. And the day the episode came where they got to the bunker everything was shattered I’ve never felt so disappointed from an adaptation before.

      I could see that, but there’s also other media in the same demographic that has young characters using firearms. Joseph in part 2 has a Tommy gun for a split second (literally ended up in his move set for J-Stars). There’s also GGO in SAO which I think was mainly the same demographic. I’d take that comment as speculation at best but it wouldn’t surprise me if the studio in particular was uncomfortable with that.

    Wanted to get into The Promised Neverland but never did bc by the time i was going to, season 2 came out and it became obvious what peoples opinions of it were, and i hadnt really seen anyone make note of how the manga differs so never bothered. I will now read at LEAST up to goldy pond, even after watching this video, bc this second arc is everything i want when it comes to intelligent characters (especially when it comes to long and seemingly convoluted plans since this arc seems to understand how and why truly intelligent strategy works), inhuman antagonists and their complex goals, and that humanistic through line. the fact i never even heard a whisper about this despite it being the very next arc is insane and disappointing because wow that deserves better. even if the rest of the manga may not be to the first 2 arcs' level, I will definitely give the manga a proper try. amazing video, and really well structured and engaging too. God, I've literally been looking for something like this, tysm for making the perfect way to inform me of it!!

      I’m honestly glad you and many others have expressed interest in engaging with the manga even after continuing past my spoiler warning XD. There’s a lot to explore even if this arc has partially been spoiled for you. Also, if you haven’t watched the anime I highly recommend the first season. Grace Field in the manga is good, but the anime truly was worth every ounce of its hype.

    I'm surprised there was no mention of "Memories of Star", a 2007 50-minute anime by SOUND HOLIC as one of the earliest (and most people considered the first FULL fan anime) released about the Lunarians, before the lore about lunarians before the lore was expanded with Silent Sinner in Blue, so a lot of it is funny to see nowadays with their own interpretations and all. It also was very...flashy with colours and epilepsy that it was almost blinding, probably to cover a lot of the noticeably low-budget animation. It would've been interesting to see your thoughts about it as a funny starting point to these ideas.

      This was a mistake on my part. I somehow entirely missed this when researching anime. Apparently there was another Touhou anime that is even more of a lost media mine than Tenchou was too. Someone else pointed that out in the comments, though I can’t remember the name of it. If I ever make another Touhou anime video, I’d go over this one, the other one, the new one (super excited for it), and probably the last episode of Memories of phantasm (it was not available at the time).

    I didn’t really like Goldy pond 🤷‍♂️ it felt like it came out of nowhere. While having good character moments, having Emma go solo with other orphans in an amusement park felt out of place. new viewer, good video. i agree with Leuvis being an optimistic villain, and i think optimistic villains can be some of the most intriguing and even most vile. i personally would argue Griffith also fits that "optimistic villain" bill - he was a big dreamer, highly idealistic, but so much so that he decided to achieve these dreams with any cruelty necessary. anyways good editing good video five stars 10/10

    • @Nyaanachi
      @Nyaanachi 6 днів тому

      I totally meant to reply to this earlier my bad. Griffith is the perfect example of an optimistic villain. It’s also incredibly realistic that his actions and treatment leading up to the eclipse had influenced him to make the decision he did. Another case where said evil action is not justifiable but understandable when you see what the character went through. Glad you brought this up. Optimistic villains can be the most terrifying.

    My "theory" is that since editors wouldnt let Ray die in Gracefield, it thawed the the author's (I always forget who is what) plan, so we got something way less good that it could have been (but great nonetheless, I loved Goldy Pond) and in which Phil would have had a big role. And one of them was in the season 2 team, and same thing happened with the editorial line, so we got this mess out of spite. I know. Let me cope.

    You sang the wrong song man. I feel like you just gotta understand this is the internet and people who care about this aren’t going to just intuit that you “just had that song stuck in your head.” But of course they obviously should’ve known you were joking. I honestly cant tell if you’re a fan of touhou or not by watching this, you seem to come at it with some distance separation from the community and it’s a little condescending at times. I don’t mean to harp or spread negativity, and it’s totally fine to come at something as a casual enjoyer, I don’t want to gatekeep. All said, I enjoyed the information you compiled here, thank you for the video. To any who agree or disagree with this stance please comment, id love to hear other perspectives. I’m new to the touhou sphere and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my time here. Thanks to all!

    • @Nyaanachi
      @Nyaanachi 10 днів тому

      Sorry if I came off as condescending. I often write my scripts with witty or snarky tones, but I try not to embody a negative one. Fans of any franchise (not the majority) can be annoyingly nit picky at times and I was mostly just poking fun at that. I wasn’t actually offended by the comments, it was more so just laughable to me that multiple people felt they needed to point that out. Fans have every right to point out my mistakes in this video though and if you look at the pinned comment you’ll see that I welcome that kind of feedback. I made many mispronunciations or overall missed the point of characters at times. All extremely unintentional and I’d like to learn more about Touhou through those mistakes. Was I approaching Touhou from a bit of an outside perspective? Yeah, and that’s mainly because I have engaged more with the media than the fandom. And even then I haven’t fully dug into every single bit of lore. I tried to do my best to balance a joking nature while also acknowledging how wonderful the fandom and their content is though. As someone very new to Touhou (last 2-3 years) I may have unintentionally offended some by doing so. Calling me a casual enjoyer of Touhou is a little disheartening though. I wouldn’t have taken the proper time to dig into each of these circles as much as I did if I only liked a bit of Touhou content here and there. I wouldn’t have explored the content in the way that I did it if I didn’t genuinely care about the franchise and its fans. I especially wouldn’t take extra time to highlight individual fan works that weren’t full anime productions.

      @@Nyaanachi I really appreciate the feedback you gave here, first and foremost. I wasn't sure I would reply to any comment on this (or if it would even get one lol) but I appreciate you even taking the time to read this. I'll be totally honest and just say that I was maybe just misunderstanding your delivery/some things you said and getting frustrated at that, and I went a little overboard with all that I said. I definitely understand your criticism as well, as I think I could've chosen a better term than "casual enjoyer" which wasn't really indicative of the work you put in. I understand you are "newer" to the series and I'm even newer than you and I wouldn't want to be called that either so I apologize. I really respect the fact that you replied and explained your thought process because I feel I understand better where you were coming from. full transparency: ive already watched this video twice and have learned alot from it so again, thanks (^^

  • @Baconator1313
    @Baconator1313 10 днів тому

    As someone who never finished the manga (didn't bother with S2 because I didn't like S1), so I can't make connections to much past Goldy Pond or speak of any significance Goldy Pond had on the rest of the story, I think Gracefield is a better arc despite Goldy Pond being my favourite arc. Gracefield manages to be more concise, suspenseful, well-written, and fleshed-out than Goldy Pond. It's pretty well self-contained, and although there are open-ended questions and unsolved mysteries, I feel like it could be intended to remain unanswered simply to get the audience thinking about the world, even if the story ends up answering them. All signs of great writing, which make for an overall enjoyable experience and why I consider it the best arc. Despite all that, I love how naturally Goldy Pond expands on the themes and world-building of Gracefield. They introduce so many interesting questions about the world that invest you into the mysteries unlike Gracefield. The action and payoff on display are built-up and worked towards throughout the arc which I feel leads to more impact on its delivery. The ending to Gracefield wraps itself up tightly and feels quite cathartic, whereas I feel Goldy Pond just has more punch. The stakes are obviously raised -- having to fight demons instead of Mother -- and yet it feels more like the characters are fighting for purpose and ideals instead of just trying to escape and be free. It makes so much sense that the world beyond the walls of Gracefield is just as messed up as the world within, and the characters need to confront the problems of society after fleeing from the problems at home. Goldy Pond hits so many good notes in that regard that despite having a less satisfying ending, Goldy Pond leaves a more lasting impression, which makes me like it more.

    • @Nyaanachi
      @Nyaanachi 10 днів тому

      I could not agree with you more. Goldy Pond will always stand out to me for the way it builds upon the already established themes, but there is no denying that Grace Field is the most well written part of the manga. Grace field works well in isolation while Goldy Pond fits perfectly within the overarching narrative. I will always have a preference towards Goldy Pond but what you said hits the nail on the head with immense precision!

      I am getting monetized! No midroll ads though because they ruin transitions! Also, don’t be afraid to watch the Touhou video. It’s entertaining enough that it might get you more invested to play the others games or engage with more content. I agree with the sentiment that many of my visuals are too fast. The r/anime most disappointing anime or recent time (or whatever it was) article I popped up briefly was actually meant to be fast. Something like that may make a viewer pause and laugh when they realize what was actually on screen. However, many panels of manga I will pull away too quick because I’m too excited to squeeze even more of them in. That’s bad on my part and I’ll really think about slowing things down in the future. I too also hate brainrot editing so I’ll try to stay away from anything that overstimulates.

I will now do my best to answer questions you didn’t even know you wanted to ask: Q: What happened to the thumbnail? A: I actually made two thumbnails and tested each of them out with the algorithm. As of now they are both being passed around on the featured page at random, but eventually only one will be kept. I like them both but one will eventually get more clicks than the other. Q: I love your editing style! How did you do it? A: I use Premiere Pro. I like to believe I’m not very good at editing, but I take pride in my key framing. If you aren’t familiar with video editing, key frames are used to determine the movement of an object. I used a lot of simple movements with blur to create panel effects and constantly layered on different images to act as though you were flipping book pages. Drop shadows were used for black boarders, adjustment layers helped zoom into a new scene, and I also cut out many individual panels to use for movement. Easy editing, but time intensive when you spend most of it looking for a page, timing movement to vocal intonation, framing each element into the shot, or cutting out a single panel only to get 3 seconds of video done. However, I think my end goal with it was achieved. I wanted to make it feel as though you yourself are flipping through manga pages, almost as if a comic book was popping out at you. I’d like to think that at some point my editing got good enough to meet that goal. Q: I hate your editing style! Change x, y, & z!!! A: Wow thanks… not really a question but okay. Seriously though there are a good handful of valid criticisms you can throw at my editing, and I welcome all of them. It changed so much during production that at some point I’m sure I did something someone didn’t like. I, personally, feel as though I need to give more time for some pages or panels to breathe before tearing them away. That’s something I’d be happy to fix in the future, but let me know if you have any other thoughts about my editing. I’m open to criticism as long as it’s genuinely constructive. Q: I don’t like your opinion on Leuvis! Change it now! A: Oh well, you’re entitled to your own opinion. I just wanted to hijack an answer to clarify some stuff. I may have made it seem as though Leuvis was obsessed with Emma making her ideals a reality. It’s more so that he wants her to be driven by them so that he gets what he wants from her. For once he sees a human driven by passion rather than despair. He obsesses over Emma because of her tenacity not because he believes her ideals are right. I also think I made it pretty clear that I wasn’t comparing Leuvis to Toguro because of their personality. They both serve a similar purpose for main character growth and I just found that aspect fascinating. Q: It took a year to make?!?!?! A: Yes… it did. I had the idea to make a video about Goldy Pond back in 2021 when I bought a Jump subscription just to read it. Fell in love with the arc but didn’t feel I was skilled enough to talk about it yet. I wrote the script the weeks following my Touhou video release and recorded the audio in January of last year. It was supposed to be a smaller video but I couldn’t help myself. My last semester of college took precedence, then I went back to work, had to move, pretty much overworked myself, and eventually the video came to a grinding halt. There’s also this really cool thing that humans do called procrastination and I am one of those humans that does that really cool thing. It could have been done just as well in 3 months probably. Much of my current life influences my work though and many things in this video would be different without the length of production it had. Q: I love your music choice! Can you make a list of tracks you used? A: Yeah I probably will in the description at some point. Lots of Celeste, DKC and earthbound. Video game music works well for my content. Sometimes I match the editing to the song, sometimes I choose the song because I know what I want the tone to feel like, and other times I just slap one in there. The audio transitions are new and I loved the way they turned out. P.S. You will impress me if you can tell me what sound bite I used for the Go Beyond section transition. It’s extremely niche so good luck. Q: Where are the midroll ads? >:( A: Why are you angry about that? No one would ask this question lol. I got rid of midroll ads because they ruined every single transition I made. I also hate watching midroll ads and I know you do too. Q: Are you still reading Naruto? A: Nope, finished it over summer. Fantastic read and I am so glad I gave it a shot. Way nicer experience than the anime imo. I am now reading One Piece just a little past the time skip. That’s it! Feel free to ask more in the comments. I’ll add really important or frequently asked questions to this comment while I still have word space.
