Are you thinking of buying the Panasonic S5? Do you currently own a Sony camera? COMMENT BELOW - LET'S CHAT!
I feel like people in the camera world always pigeon hole themselves into one corner - especially when it comes to debating "which camera brand is best".
I recently bought the Panasonic S5 after using/investing a lot into the Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras over the past 4 years.
I was a little bit worried about the Panasonic S5's autofocus amongst some other things that I have been spoiled by with my Sony cameras. However, the Panasonic S5 is hands down my favourite camera i've ever owned and beats the Sony cameras in every way when it comes to actual user experience.
The bottom line is, I enjoy using the Panasonic S5 - and that's what we should be focussing on more nowadays since pretty much every new(ish) camera can produce stunning results.

Vlogging has skewed every judgement on new cameras. In normal filmmaking what you pull focus from and to, would never be left to a piece of tech. It's a creative decision that determines the flow of the story. For stills I find good ergonomics far more important than spec sheet bragging rights, whatever the camera.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 роки тому +6

I would agree with you there. It seems that prosumer cameras are now being compared for the UA-cam world more than they are for the professional world (not that UA-cam can't be professional).
I can understand this though... With the rise in popularity of UA-cam content and people becoming more invested in making videos by themselves, it's understandable why certain features are sought after more than they used to be. This camera has taught me not to care too much about the spec sheets/online reviews though; after all, the ergonomics alone make this camera a joy to use, let alone the great pro features it packs for the money!

I just switched from my 2 year old GH5 to the full frame world. Thought about going for the sony a7siii but I had such a joy using my GH5 that I wanted to switch to a similar body. After buying the S5 I'm not disappointed at all and the image quality you can get out of this camera is INSANE. We're talking cinema quality for less than 2k.

Hey David! Thanks for the comment and for watching this video!
I 100% agree. No other camera on the market can realistically compete with the video functionality and quality you’re getting at this price point with the S5. All that’s left now for me is to pick up an Atomos Ninja V so I can make the most of the RAW codecs! 🙌🏼

Anyway, awesome to see that you share my consensus on the quality of this camera. It has been such a joy to use, especially with the size and ibis there's almost no wrong moment to have this camera with you. Regarding auto-focus you are spot on, not great for video, but at the cost and quality of this camera you're stepping into the realm of high professional video, where autofocus is not a prioriety. Last month I sold all my Sony gear and bought a nearly new Panasonic S5 with the kit lens and a 50mm prime. I also got myself a nearly new S1 body and a second hand 24-105mm kit lens. You just highlighted all the reasons why I sold my Sony camera and lenses. Even the S1 for all the fact that it is big and bulky feels right when I am holding it. Something that the Sony cameras I have owned never quite have. Also since I owned a GH5 and a G9 in the past , there wasn’t quite the learning curve that I usually struggle with when I buy a new camera. Thanks for an informative and interesting video.

👍 Good description of the pros and cons. I use the G95 and G9 and am very happy with them for what I do. The S5 sounds like a great camera, but I have invested heavily in lenses for the MFT system and for 90% of what I do MFT is completely satisfactory and FF not required and the benefits of the smaller lensed system are more beneficial to me. That's not to say there are not situations where I would benefit from FF, or that I'm trying to argue that FF isn't better for others. Not at all. I'm also not precious about brands and appreciate the strengths of different manufacturers and cameras, but I do think a lot of folk get put off Panasonic by the AF reputation, and don't appreciate the strengths such as those you mentioned such as ergonomics, menu system, touch screen and stabilisation, all of which I appreciate greatly. It is of course right to highlight the weakness of Lumix cameras in regard to video AF, and it is something to be taken into consideration when choosing, but as you say depending on what you do and how much you rely on AF then it needn't be a show stopper for some. I also like that you mentioned that for photos the AF is good, which it is. A lot of reviews don't highlight that, and many could think that it's poor all round. That's definitely not the case and for photography it can be better than other systems as long as you choose appropriate settings. Hope you enjoy using your S5. 🙂

Hello Kenny and thank you for your comment - really appreciate you taking the time to write such a comprehensive response to this video! Yes I completely agree with you. Something that is taxing my wallet quite heavily is the transition from E Mount glass to Full Frame L Mount glass (It's so damn expensive!). I'm really glad you noticed that I took a different approach to this comparison rather than just slating it compared to some of the other reviews out there. As you rightly pointed out, the ergonomics, stabilisation and user-friendliness was the first thing I noticed after getting this camera. I feel like people are too quick to jump on 'what's wrong' with a camera as opposed to appreciating what's right with it.
Photography with this camera is insane. This is the one area where I have literally zero complaints. Dynamic range, low light, AF functions are all amazing!

Honestly, the autofocus on the S5 isn't all that bad with the new firmware. Yeah, Sony has tack-sharp autofocus and the AI processing is absolutely spot-on, nearly telepathic in some cases, but the S5 is more of a joy to use. The menus are clear and easy to access, the camera's handling is much more "friendly" and satisfying, and Panasonic hasn't randomly crippled the touch-screen like Sony has, for some reason. I plan to sell my A7iii and get an S5 as my primary shooter, and get an a6100 or even a ZV-1 for my vlogging / streaming camera.

I have an s5 coming shortly, so I'll withhold final judgement til I get it. I understand how important the video is for some, but I'm primarily interested in still photography, and it's frustrating to see so many camera reviews failing to pay sufficient attention to that market. Thanks for pointing that out. A lot of people won't get that while autofocus may not be where videographers want it, it appears to be superior for those of us who still work primarily in the still world, and they're put off by all the criticism of auto focus when the critique doesn't really apply to their use case. After viewing your review and a lot of others who actually mention still photography, that seems to be the consensus, so I'll be interested to see what my experience will be.

I have used Sony, Canon and Fujifilm and the AF on all of them has given me issues in video at times. Although Panasonic has its own AF quirks when I need AF, the focus menus give me a lot more control and flexibility when used correctly than I had with the other cameras and the focus transitions are also very smooth. Imagine how good the AF would be if Panasonic release a hybrid AF system.

It's true on why I moved to panny as well, to the G9 specifically.
Coming from the A7iii. I was so used to not using the touch screen as its quite redundant for only focus points adjustments. I can't navigate the menu, pictures etc. I still have the habit of using buttons and dials only but slowly I am adapting to utilize the touch screen more on the G9
One thing with a M43 sensor, the depth of field is less shallow which is better for me. As I have to provide a much brighter light source when using a FF. Eg. A F4 on M43 is like a F8 depth of field on full frame, but the amount of light entering is the same, so same shutter and iso settings!
Next is the buttons layout, buttons feel and ergonomic. Though G9 goes against M43 ideas of been compact, but a tough and rugged larger body makes it nicer to hold for someone like myself with bigger hands, the buttons position feels great and the dials are nice to touch in comparison.
The viewfinder on the G9 is so much nicer in comparison as well.
The AF in my honest opinion, does not disappoint, as I don't do fast action stuff.
There's much more to go on but all in all, I am liking the G9 so much more than Sony. This is for my style and usage.
I will definitely consider the S series from panny once my Sony system has been let go.
BTW I enjoy this video! Thumbs up from me, cheers!

Thanks Josh again very interesting - still trying to decide between the Z cameras and the S5. You mentioned having to get your white balance right. Are you using cards for that I rarely come of auto white balance on my D750 occasionally ill use one of the presets but nikons auto white balance on dslrs is very good.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 роки тому +1

Hey Mark! Thanks for watching this video!
Yeah I think the white balance is key for any camera though (if you want to nail skin tones etc). The AWB on the S5 is good but you need to remember to put it on AWB lock if you're planning on getting your WB from the camera itself. Otherwise, as well all know - it'll dance around a little during filming.
To get accurate WB, I always set it manually, either by eye or with the built in presets (like cloudy, sunny, etc). I find they work really well actually.
I always used daylight balanced lighting too, so that means that if I'm lighting my scene artificially, i'll always set the kelvin to 5600K to match the 5600K lights.
Just helps to ensure everything is as controlled as possible.
Hope this helps! BTW - you should choose the S5 ;)

Your title resonated with me, decided to watch. Having owned a S5 for a few months now, I think your observations are fair. When looking to upgrade from my Canon 5DM3 to modern mirrorless, I looked at all the viable (for me) alternatives. Yes, Sony has very rich feature sets, but their primary attraction seems to be heavily dependent on their autofocus. If AF isn't a showstopper for you, their appeal lessens.
Nearly a decade ago, I chose Canon over Nikon, because of ergos. Rented a GH5, thoroughly loved the experience. When the S5 came out, it came down to the Sony A7III vs S5. The S5 was not yet available (pre-ordered), so I used the GH5 as a proxy from an ergo perspective. Like Nikon, I found A7III unpleasant to work with.
Ordered the S5 sight unseen. Once I got it, I spent time comparing results from the Canon v Panasonic. The S5 image quality (in my eyes) was a pleasant surprise. Yes, I'm talking a camera with 12 years-newer tech, but still. I'd also gotten tired of 'big' camera. When comparing both 5D and S5 w/their respective 16-35mm Pro lenses, the S5 came physically smaller -and- 30% lighter. No surprise after two months of off/on evaluation I decided to keep the S5 and liquidate the Canon gear. It's what works for me.
Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 роки тому +1

Hey JT and thanks for your comment. That's great to hear and I think you made the best decision! The issue is that canon has very good ergonomics, too, so going to the Sony bodies would have felt more uncomfortable than transitioning to the Panasonic system.
The A7iii also came out in April of 2018 (I remember because I pre-ordered it!), so it's actually quite old in the grand scheme of things; especially when you think about how fast the mirrorless industry is developing.

Josh in youur video you mention good ergonomics on the S5 - is there a video/photo switch. I have one on my Nikon it saves my last photo/video settings automatically, its become essential to me when working on a hybrid job, does the S5 have the same feature.

Hi Mark, so there are custom dial settings (i.e C1, C2 etc) and that's what I use for flicking between photo and video.
I simply set C1 as my photo mode with all of my settings dialled in, and then C2 as my video mode with the desired settings dialled in.
This work around really works for me and I'm able to go from photo to video really quickly.

They are powerful tools and I am heavily invested in lumix from my S1H to my GH5, BUT I still wish they had better autofocus. Behind or in front of the camera, it’s nice when buying something to get the complete package. I want the most versatile tool, if I want to do an interview and let the camera run and track the subject because I can’t man two cameras at once for both the interviewer and the interviewee, or if I have 2 cameras on my subject one a wide and one a close up with shallow depth of field you want it tracking so your subject can move around a little or suction the GH5 to a windshield autofocus is not just an amateur thing, autofocus has its place for small budget productions, I mean if I had an unlimited budget you could go full cinema with a wireless focus mechanism and stuff but when you are small low budget you do want the best bang for your buck. I think if Panasonic doesn’t step up soon they might lose me to canon. I do photography work as well, I want it to do as much as I can, the ability to shoot raw internally on the R5 is impressive, the canon F2.8 lenses with OIS to add to the IBIS is awesome, the 40 something MP is awesome, the autofocus is nearly awesome (better than the Panasonic). So yes I’m a Panasonic shooter right now but I am looking over the fence.

    • @JoshCameron

I get what you're saying - but the grass will always be greener on the other side if you know what I mean? For me, the photo capabilities of the S5 are more than sufficient and the colours are absolutely outstanding. The Panasonic doesn't overheat unlike the R5, so although you're getting that RAW codec internally, you're probably better off using an external recorder and recording raw with one of the FF Panasonic cameras since they can actually handle the heat.
I do agree that the AF is a caveat for this system, but I invested into it knowing that from the outset, so maybe that's why it doesn't really bother me as much as it does other people!
There's never going to be a 'perfect' camera that's in everyone's price range, so I guess it just depends on what features matter the most to that particular user!

One of the reasons I moved to Panasonic was the lack of usable auto focus. Manual focus is a skill that I don't want to loose. My only issue is with the crappy focus by wire lenses that Panasonic insist on making. If they made a set of affordable cinema lenses in L mount, I'm sure they would be popular. As is usual, Sigma have saved the day with the wonderful MC-21 adapter, using Canon L and Sigma Art lenses with a proper manual focus ring is a beautiful thing.

Also a fully articulating screen was one of my requirements. All that with a sub $2000 budget, the S5 wins. And the pic quality is very good. Started with the Lumix G6 - after a couple of years I was looking for an upgrade last year - first bought the 6400 - couldn't really get it to work for me (eg. there is no automatic "crop in" as soon as you turn the focus ring when manual focusing - you always have to press a button for that) I was kinda fine with not having a flip-out screen and thought that I even could get around the not so good batterylife to have the bigger sensor but was rally annoyed that the screen seemed to have much bigger delay than the one on my G6 - as I said it always felt like the camera wasn't really working with be tbh ... returned it after two weeks and bought a used G85 for around 375€ as supposed to the 900€ for the 6400.
And yeah the image might have been a little better and the APC Sensor just takes in more light - you can't alter physics after all - *but* I could not be happier with my G85 and - as for all the cameras out right now - I think I will say with Lumix for now.
The picturequality and sensor with the (software)features and body of sth like the GH5 (with its IBIS) or the S1 - *that* would be *THE* dream :D

Hello and thank you for your comment! This is very true - I don't think contrast AF behaves in the same ay as Phase Detection AF, however for the odd use I think the AFC on the S5 is useable. I am definitely going more towards the professional video world now and I utilise MF more and more every day (in fact it's now the only mode I shoot with in video).
For UA-cam content the MF is a little bit tricker to set since I'm the subject in the video, so I 100% agree that for solo UA-camrs AF is essential. Luckily i've got a big 7" monitor so setting focus on myself for sit down talks is quite easy - but anything more than that it becomes a little cumbersome.

I left Sony and never looked back. S5 is very underestimated camera. Much better video and the stabilization i way better than Sony. I was looking at the Sony A7s III. But after a lot of reading and days looking at reviews, I decide to switch. As you mentioned in your video, the colors surprised me. When it comes to colors, I would definitely choose Panasonic. When it comes to AF and still images, I got more useful images from the S5 than the Sony AR7 III in burst mode. AF in video not for me but I think the S5 AF is more organic. Did not use AF on Sony and Nikon Z6 either. If I have to choose, the S5 is the most inspiring camera I have ever used.

The s1 has 5.9k internal, is weather sealed, has full size hdmi, has a far better evf and screen, better ibis, higer audio bit rate, professional cfast card slot, and that lovely lock switch! And is currently slightly cheaper !!!
Not that the s5 is bad, because its certainly not, it's just a step down from the s1 (imho)

Sony released the a6600 and a7c with massive autofocus and a big range of lenses. Hey Martin, I get where you're coming from....
Honestly, the lens thing bothered me to start off with (more so than the multiple vids complaining about the AF performance), but now it feels like Sigma and Panasonic are really pushing more affordable lenses onto the L Mount roadmap, so don't let that deter you.
Sony FE glass is also incredibly expensive! It's just that price jump you get when coming from a crop sensor to a full frame sensor.
Honestly, from experience, you'd hate going to Sony. Reason being is that you're already spoiled by the ergonomics and great features seen inside the Panasonic G85. Therefore, the S5 will feel more like home and it's a safer bet in your case since you could invest into Sony and absolutely hate using it!
That's just my thoughts on it - Hope you get what's right for you!

As someone who has shot with Panasonic cameras for years, but is looking at switching to Sony because of autofocus, this video gives me a lot of pause. The ergonomics, menu system and overall handling of Panasonic cameras have been wonderful, and everything I read about Sony suggests they aren't optimal at all. My current primary video camera is the G9, and I've used the GH3 and GH4 for years before that. The G9 is just so comfortable with the oversized grip and thoughtful button placement. I just wish L mount had comparably small and high spec lenses like Sony. I travel a fair bit for work, and lighter the kit, the better.

If I went back to using Sony, I know I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I do using the Panasonic.
The lens selection is a bit of an issue at the moment, however once Panasonic release the 24/35/50 1.8 primes that are the same size and weight as the 85mm 1.8 then I know the system will make a lot more sense!

Point being,I am going to approach each piece of gear, with a way to make it work for me,and it makes sense, that if we are investing that kind of money,we can also invest that learning time.I know the video is about the Panasonic S5,yet the Sony menus were mentioned on purpose,so I addressed it as well.I mean, how many years have we been having this same conversation already?I shoot Pentax right now,and people constantly go back and forth about the same, same, same, same issues with Pentax.
Instead,I wrote to them, and addressed them personally, and once they responded,i went around the issue, and found an immediate solution. Why?I have no time to waste complaining,I just want to solve something and move forward. It makes more logical sense for me to write Panasonic instead and find out why they continue to cripple their own ILCs with inferior AF for those prices.I held those Panasonics and they were sooooooo sturdy, well built, fit my hands, etc, etc, and then i had to put it down, because I knew the AF was lacking.
No ONE can justify such a travesty, when you have cameras costing less than half as much, with superior AF.I will check them out again with the new firmware and see if there's a marked improvement.
