Some people enjoy putting others down and they are anonymous behind their keyboards. #FranchiseKicks has said (paraphrasing) that even if they are complaining it adds to the stats and that includes their dislikes. Keep doing what you're doing because nearly everybody is here because they are learning new skills or enjoy watching what you're making.

It's apparently just the Pinata brand. Toonpish Crafts does an extensive test with 9 different brands of alcohol ink and only the Pinata faded in the sunlight in her experiment...that's great news for me as I've never heard of that brand and have had zero issue with fading with the resin alcohol inks I got from Amazon. So for those that are swearing off alcohol ink, you might be missing a wonderful opportunity for creating projects you simply can't do with paint in resin.

Thank you Steve for preventing me from wasting my money! I'm new to resin and was looking into using alcohol inks. The resin goddess must have led me to your video, which was the only one to mention this downside. I'm making things for my granddaughter to sell on her esoteric stall and online. • @wendybabendy

I invested in a bunch of different inks including Brea Reese, Tim Holtz, & Pinata. I wonder since the tumblers are solid as opposed to translucent like the coasters maybe that makes a difference. Also, I sometimes use the pinata white to aid in color mixing

    • @beirney82

That's what I was wondering. Surely it would block the UV and allow the colour to retain it's vibrancy. I would've thought UV Resistant resin would mitigate the problem, too, but I am newish to resin, so I'm probably wrong.

Sorry you have had to deal with people being nasty Steve.. their low lightfastness is enough of a reason for me not to use them let alone anything else such as the fumes that are released because alcohol breaks down resin. Or the chances of sticky uncured resin cus again alcohol breaks down resin.. or the fact the resin is weakened cus.. see above. I'll stick to inks made for resin

  • @liquideyesart

This is not meant to be a negative comment, but I am a bit baffled. I have been making resin creations with alcohol ink since 2019, including these petri style coasters, and I have NEVER had anything fade like this in just a couple of weeks. 😳 it takes about a year before I start to notice any type of fading, and usually its very subtle. For reference, I live in Texas where the heat is brutal in the summer time. I also have these coasters in my living room where it has giant windows and a skylight and don't get this type of fade so quickly. Neither does this happen to the ones displayed all around my art studio, which also has a large window.
Again, this isn't meant to be a negative comment or criticism, I just wonder if some other factor is at play here in order for yours to fade so quickly. Maybe it depends on the resin?

Thank you for doing this video. I have been looking for this ever since I learnt that the colours fade. I have a question for you though if that's ok. • @gemmahenocq4785
      @gemmahenocq4785 2 роки тому

@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts thats fair. I look forwards to seeing the results. I'll check out the feathering videos. I am still wondering about the sinkers though as I have had some success creating a cloud like effect with pigment a cocktail stick and a heat gun but it's just superficial and only sits on the top so only really good for shallow pours. I'm not sure whether to buy some white sinker and try it out.

Ok I have 2 questions, and I'm asking because I'm truly wanting to learn.
    1. What if you used UV Resistent resin? Would that help alcohol inks stay vibrant longer? I've used it on tumblers before and it seems to really work (for example, I have mica powder that changes colors in UV light, but it doesn't change colors if I use the UV Resistant Resin).
    2. What's the best route to go if question 1 didn't work, instead of using alcohol ink?

  • @marytomlin2566

Steve, I wanted to tell you that I disagree with you about Alcohol inks fading when left out. I think the difference is that you poured yours over the resin and didn't mix in. That change looks nasty like something spoiled in your refrigerator. I want to say i never had this problem like this happen but im not calling you a lier either. I use the tim holz n ranger ones n i have a few others. I don't think i had anything sit in that much sun BUT i have had alcohol inks fade not being in the sun at all by the next day. a lot of alcohol based dyes are not light safe, i remember someone testing those cheap alcohol markers vs expensive ones, left them taped to a window for months and both had colors that faded, other than that resin is a serious toxic chemical reaction, theres no telling what that does to things that arent formulated for it.

We were trying out alcohol ink in UV resin - we knew it wasn't recommended, but mostly people said it was because the resin wouldn't cure as well, but we decided to try anyway. Ultimately the resin cured fine - but the beautiful teal green ink turned nearly pitch black. We realised it was the UV, and we haven't really used the inks much since... and thankfully we'd only bought two to try!

Thank you! Im very new to resin, and I had no idea there was even an issue with lightfastness of alcohol ink in epoxy. I don't think I've ever seen a better example of why lightfastness is important in relation to what we are creating. Surely there are times when the lightfastness will not matter as it will not be exposed to light for long periods of time. Coasters? Pretty as they were, they seem just as quick to fade and seem almost "rotten" like actual flowers. If that's what you want, cool... but if not... well. Lol.
Thank you for this, you likely saved me many many heartbreaks in future projects.

I've been using alcohol inks in resin for years in my jewelry and I've never had this happen. Not being mean or nasty, I just don't understand why yours did this and mine doesn't?

Wow, that color fade was pretty harsh. I am in Florida, and the sun is pretty harsh. Anything anywhere near natural light will fade. So far, I've only been using mica powder, so, I'm hoping for the best.

The one in the light still looks good as well with the design though, but thank you for showing what happens when you use alcohol inks.

Hey Steve, hope you are doing better. Could you do an experiment with clothes dye in resin? I've been thinking about using it. Would like to see if it's worth my time. Thanks for everything you're doing, keep it up, and don't listen to the haters.

I was going to put up my coasters with alcohol ink at my next farmers market.
You definitely saved me unhappy customers.
I'm such a huge fan of yours.
Ps. The negative nellies don't matter. Block block n block them - keep doing what you are doing. You have many who love your contents.
    Till your next video.

Thanks, I needed to see this. I knew alcohol ink faded over time but I never realized it was this quick and to that degree! Now the problem, does anyone need to buy 1,000 bottles of alcohol ink? LOL! Thank you for taking the time and making a video showing how quickly alcohol ink fades, it's appreciated!

Hi Steve, thank you so much for this video, I don't understand why people have to leave nasty comments, there's no need and no room for them!
I bought alcohol inks THEN found out that they fade, I was devastated 😭 now I have a box full of alcohol inks that I'm never going to use, what a waste of money 😭😭😭
Thanks for your great videos. Can I ask, what do you do with the things you make? Whether they work or not, must cost you a fortune in resin x

OMG! That was quick. I had heard about this but I thought it took years for the decoloration to occur. Some artist use calligraphy ink, I heard it doesn’t lose it’s color. I still need to try it out.

Steve, thank you for this very good demo! ❤ I had no idea they would fade so badly. Sad, because the inks are are so gorgeous, as you say. 😥
I wonder...what if you used other pigments to lay down blobs of color, then a white sinker on them... Oh, man! Now I gotta try this! 😄. I do love Let's Resin "C Deeper" white, but I also have a full bottle of Piñata that needs to be used! Oy vey.
TIP: When using Piñata alcohol ink white, I *always* dilute it with 99% isopropyl, as I've always found it to be far too heavy to use as a sinker, especially if using it in more than one layer.

Wow, that's fascinating, I wonder why that happens in resin but not with using them in art works? It doesn't seem to have the same effect on the white, so it's stripping the colour out rather than just fading everything. I think if you were looking to get that effect with just white, then you could make it work, but not with colours...does black strip out too?
I'm curious what you would use instead? Do you stick with just mica powder or is there something else you would use? >s there any other way to get the similar looks you can create without alcohol ink?

Do different brands of alcohol inks make a difference?
Also is there any ways that you can improve the colour fastance so that it doesn't fade as fast?
If you were going to make these to sell would you be best to leave them for 2-6weeks before selling them

I absolutely love your work and knowledge!! You're so incredible! You do a lot of testing of inks, powders, beads etc! I would like to see if you could test materials, like shoes. I want to make a memorable for my daughter with her son's baby shoes. Would I paint some resin on them first before pouring the resin on them? I want this to be amazing and not ruin them. I have watched all the videos of yours i could find!! I saw the one with a felt Santa and saw u painted resin on them first before pouring the rest of the resin on them. Are shoes the same process? Keep up the excellent work!! I hope to be a pro like you one day! Thank you!!

This may happen when you just drop the ink in as opposed to mixing the ink In and using it that way. I have found that I have not had this reaction when mixing the ink ink into the resin then pouring. I get no fading, no discoloration. Maybe try that. I love this channel. Would be curious to see what results you get compared with mine.

So since those inks are out what other inks can produce the same or similar results. Would love to see a video with alternative inks or dyes compared to alcohol ink to get similar results.
