I remember watching this video when you first posted it.. And I Just stumbled upon it in the browse section and watched it again after all these years and still enjoyed it very much.. I can't believe you posted this 13 years ago .. It's scary how fast time moves along..
I remember the old Ridgewood. I loved it, I can see all the old stores, Woolworths, Kresges, Urdangs, Lerner Shops. a chicken rotisserie store, Glendale Dept. Store, I swent to St Pancras School and Church. lived on 65th Place, off Central Ave. One block up further was Myrtle Ave. Anyone remember Aggies Candy store? beautiful church on Central too. MJullers Delicatessan? Across from that was a Safeway Store,
You mentioned that you use to live around Myrtle Avenue. My grandfather also used to live around Myrtle Avenue, in the Fort Greene Projects. He was there up until the 1960's. He had a daughter and only met her once in Brooklyn, I have been trying to find her with no luck. If you could please reach out to me at my email forevermyangellee@gmail.com that would be very much appreciated. Thank you!!!
Another great walking tour of Ridgewood. That place called the "Art Cove" used to be called "Waxgeiser's" in the '60s that sold art and office supplies. At the triangle which is now "Flowerama" was a poulterer's shop it may have been called "Chickenrama". My mom would send me there to get fresh chicken. It was a small shop at the apex of the triangle. The man was tall and lanky, the place smelled like chicken and cigars, and the chicken was wrapped in newspaper. One of my first jobs was working in that Radio Shack. The Ridgewood Savings bank was amazing on the inside ... almost like a church with a huge mural that symbolically depicted the concept of commerce. I wonder if the mural is still there. I visited that coin shop many times. Things I remember that are apparently now long gone are: Times Square Stores (hardware), A&P (groceries), and Stan-Jack (bicycles). On the same block there was a store that just sold toys and games ... I would buy stickball bats, Spauldings and Pensy Pinkies there. And also an old-time soda fountain / ice cream parlor. Thanks for the memories.
Glad you enjoyed the tour. Believe it or not that coin store is still there!!! Also I heard that the ridgewood savings bank renovated the interior Now it looks line any other bank .too bad.
I tell ya, seeing this brings back childhood memories even for a young man like me in my 20s. I remember there used to be a Wendy's right on the same block where 7/11 is and I was fortunate enough to go to the Ridgewood Theater as a kid before it shut down. Was on Madison & Cypress all throughout my childhood.
Ridgewood!! Currently living there towarsd Cleveland HS. Man you must have gone at a very early time, cause Myrtle ave. is usually buzzing with people anytime after 3pm. Very nice video though, and even I moved here not so long ago (probably about 10 years) its nice to go back in time and see what it used to be. Since ive moved here, Ridgewood has changed alot.
Roberto Soto JrI used to live at 386 Wilson ave.Att. PS 106 And than PS 85-85 gone -106 still alive and kicking.Moved to Florida in 1953.Now retired and live on Ohio. What great memories! Thanks for posting.
Love it and the memories of living on the corner of Woodbine and Forest. Across the street from PS 93. Glad to see the Ridgewood Savings Bank is still there. Remember savings bank books? Thank you for bringing back a more gentle time.
WOW! That was a pleasure to watch. I grew up in Ridgewood/Glendale. First as a baby across the street from PS 88 on Catalpa. Baptized at St Mathias. Parents were married there too. I also lived on Onderdonk on the corner at 69th Ave. Then later moved to 64th Pl in Glendale. That whole trip up Myrtle was the story of my early life. So cool to see those old buildings. I can't believe Joe and Johns Pizza is still there! Amazing!
Awesome thank you so much for taking me down memory lane I lived on Myrtle Avenue on top of John's Pizzeria also lived across the street next to the coin store back in the 70s through the 80s
George Rivera hi. I have a question. My grandfather use to live off myrtle Avenue in the fort Greene projects until around 1967. He had a daughter down there and we have been looking for her with no luck. Her name was lila or delilah Yvette and her mother name Annette. They use to live on 336 myrtle Avenue, does this sound familiar? Was hoping you could help with anything, or spread the word that we are looking for her and want to meet her. Thank you 😊
I believe when I was kid in the late 50s there was a fabulous Jewish Deli and Restaurant called Gotleibs there. My mother used to take me there. She and the rest of my family where all from Brooklyn and that area
Wow...Memories for sure.. grew up there in the 70s.. the Italian restaurant you mentioned was Villa Maria I do believe. And the new entrace to the EL was a newsstand. My parents owned a couple different bars The Linden Inn on Linden & Wyckoff and then the Anchor Inn on Menahan & Seneca. I went to St. Brigids, we lived above Nat's Pizza on Wyckoff next to barbershop, then up off Menahan & Onderdunk. Hung out on Himrod & Seneca at Sieb & Cherry Valley and The Carbines all the time ( grandfather & aunt lived there and worked at Wyckoff Heights Hospital) we Moved to Florida in early 80s. You have any other photos or videos of the neighborhood?
Michael J. Schaefer George Rivera hi. I have a question. My grandfather use to live off myrtle Avenue in the fort Greene projects until around 1967. I know a guy who lives in the neighborhood so I know that particular area fairly well. This brought back some memories and I leaned some history too. The Ridgewood Theatre was converted into a gym and some condos iirc. The Fleur de Lis was converted into a supermarket. Also, that pan shot from 5:32 on, I can't how many of those places are gone. It's not really something people think about. Fun time capsule
My grandparents lived on Grove St in the 1960s, my mother and her sister shopped at Lerner's; I worked at Madison Drugs from 1975-1978 part-time and I was shocked to see it again! I also bought coins at that coin shop when I was a kid. Can remember Gottlieb's restaurant across from the Madison theater, I guess Gottlieb's is long gone now, and Koletty's ice cream parlor, I've been once or twice. Thanks for the video, brought back lots of great memories.
The building on the corner of Myrtle and Catalpa Avenues (56-45 Myrtle Ave) was owned by my family from 1930s to 1970s. We lived at 1707 Stephen Street. Seeing this short film after not visiting Ridgewood since the 1990s, when my uncle who lived at 56-45 Myrtle and was my last relative living there passed away at age 97, brings back memories and some sadness when I think about growing up there in the late 1940s. However, it was great to see the old neighborhood and I thank you for making this film.....
Thanks for the video. Boy did you bring back some memories. My friends and I used to go to the Madison theater all the time in the 70s. When the movie Ben played there, the movie with the rats. Me and my friends went to the pet store on Fresh Pond rd, bought some mice, went up to the balcony and threw them on people during the rat scenes. We thought it was pretty funny. Boy that video brought back some memories. Thanks again.

I graduated from Grover Cleveland H.S. in 1955, moved to Texas in 1967 and have been back only once when my father died. This trip down (or up) Myrtle Avenue brought back many memories. I lived on Woodward Ave and Himrod, over what was then a saloon. Is it still standing? Probably not. Thanks to whoever took the time to make this video.
MADISON.RIDGEWOOD, GLENWOOD,BELVADERE,ACME...WERE MOVIE HOUSES BACK IN THE DAY ON MYRTLE. KATIE SANDWEINER, THE WORLDS STRONGEST WOMAN, HAD A BAR JUST OFF FRESH POND RD. IN GLENDALE....... THE MADISON WAS A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE HOUSE.
Watching this from Tokyo Japan. Grew up on Wyckoff and Troutman. Can't believe that coin shop is still around. I used to buy and sell rare coins to the old guy there when I was a kid in the late 70's.
Great video. Really brought back a lot of memories...most of them pretty good. Wasn't there a Coletti's Ice Cream Shop right near the Myrtle Ave. Avenue station?

Very nice job, Maam. I've been in Az. close to 25 years now (went back for a subway series game). Joe and John's pizza - used to go there as a kid - looks the same. The newspaper stand at Myrtle and Wycoff - beautiful. Don't have newspaper stands in Az. I remember seeing the Madison theatre on fire, but the Ridgewood theatre, now that's a shame. I didn't see any Walmarts, so, that's cool. A&P long gone, I guess. I think I would still like to walk that avenue. Still some good places left. Thankyou, again, really!
Hot dog and Hamburger open window stand/store on corner of Myrtle and Wyckoff ave! Near entrance to train (L line) . Ridgewood and Madison theaters along Myrtle Ave. (where some kids would get into free).
What a tour, my Grandfather is one of those lost in WW1 and named on that monument. I have photos in black and white I wish I could send you to maybe identify a location long before the area became what it is today. I still have family living there on Cooper Avenue to this day, love the tours, just don't sign on and comment all the time, had to for this one finally..
Great video! I lived in the area, on 65th Street and Shaler Ave., from 1944-1964. The Post Office on Myrtle, a block from Fresh Pond Road, was previously a bowling alley and, before that, the Glendale movie theater. I went to that movie theater many, many Saturdays when I was a preteen. I also went after school let out at P.S. 88 on some weekdays (sorry, mom, I stole some of your quarters to go to those movies).

Great video, I love it. Great memories, I remember the Arthur Treacher's on that corner. Wow, the Ridgewood Theater I went to a couple of times, GONE! And even the Key Food my mom would drag me to every Saturday... incredible! It's amazing to see that the little pizza shops are still there.
NY Company used to be a Lerner's , a women's clothing store. As you walk along Myrtle, in the direction of Forest Ave, a store or 2 away from Lerner's was a Woolworth's. Was Aggies the candy store on Myrtle between 64th place and 62nd street? I lived around the block on 74th avenue. I believe it was two brothers who owned it. Used to go there all the time.
The old Lerner's, now NY company, defnately had a back entrance on Onderdonk, however, Woolworth's also had a back entrance onto Onderdonk. I also remember Kresgee's having a staircase to a lower level....Lerner's never had that staircase..it was always one level...
I lived on Woodbine Street, between Cypress and St. Nicholas avenues. I remember the old Ciro's restaurant across from Key Food. And, yes, you're right: the old Madison Theater was beautiful and should have been designated a landmark.
You stated that you lived at St Nicholas/ Grove, went to St. Brigid, as most of us did, but the biggest hunch came from your channel..tgimbel50. I lived in the neighborhood. Most kids in the neighborhood knew each others name by sight even if they were not friends. I remember your sister Linda, she had blonde hair. I have a slight recollection of your other sister Barbara, so sorry she has passed. I made another video of Saint Nicholas Ave. Take a look, I am sure it will spark more memories.
Wow, Hitchcock and Fonda in Ridgewood. Last summer a movie with Bruce Willis/Tracey Morgan called Cop Out was shot in Ridgewood. I think it opened recently......Boy, what a downslide from those Hitchcock days....
When I was a kid I saw Herman's Hermits perform at the Madison theater during an intermission of Land of the Teenage Giants. They sang Henry the 8th. I'm Hennery the 8th I am, 'Ennery the 8th I am I am... haha.
i'm wondering how long before they tear down the old Madison theatre for an apartment building. it would be a lost opportunity to renovate this once grand place as they did with the king in Flatbush. We need a performance space. With the trains nearby...
I used to take the MJ train down to Brooklyn Tech ... a 20 minute ride. Then they shut it down and we all had to take the M into Manhattan and change to get back into Brooklyn ... it doubled the length of the trip. When I was kid, you could still see the old trolley tracks all along Myrtle Ave.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed my video. I will be making more. This is just a hunch but by looking at your channel name tgimbel50...Do you have 2 sisters..one named Linda?
I remember watching this video when you first posted it.. And I Just stumbled upon it in the browse section and watched it again after all these years and still enjoyed it very much.. I can't believe you posted this 13 years ago .. It's scary how fast time moves along..

I was there about 9am Saturday morning. Wanted to get started before the crowds appeared. Glad you liked it.
On 6:33 For the longest time b4 it started changing a lot wasn't that "Golden Corner Pizza?"
I used to work at a check cashing on Myrtle and gates! How nice to see your video
It's still there today
It's hard to imagine that bank as a drug store. The interior and exterior architecture of that building is/was so majestic. Maybe it would have been better suited for a library or post office. I didn't see the little Italian restaurant...Villa Maria, I think.
You are right. It is odd to step into that majestic building and see a drug store. The Villa Maria is long gone.
The bank at 7:17 was once McCorys...5&10 store.. Key food was the A&P....
The corner you identify as an Arthur Treacher's fish hole, was once an awesome ice cream parlor called Coletti's.
I worked at that Arthur Treather's.

Hi
I used to live near by and would go to Villa Maria Restaurant most weekends.
Do you know if it still open?
In case it moved, would you know where?
Thanks, JC
The Villa Maria closed many, many years ago. I do think that for some reason they were closed by the city marshall or FBI.
Thank you.
I saw Batman at the Ridgewood theater too! Yes, that was a lot of fun. Haha.
Maybe, we went to the same showing? Ya' never know.
Was Aggies the candy store on Myrtle between 64th place and 62nd street? I lived around the block on 74th avenue. I believe it was two brothers who owned it. Used to go there all the time.

......oh and if you go farther down myrtle ave into glendale there was a McCroy's near saint pancras. I really miss those old five and dime stores....
I do not remember Bickfords but I remember Artur Treacher's at the corner of myrtle and palmetto
Remember Bickfords! Had a counter to hangout by and have coffee...or whatever eats.
at 3:31 that's been my home since 1973 and still love it ! Let everybody go to Florida !
I lived on Woodbine Street, between Cypress and St. Nicholas avenues. I remember the old Ciro's restaurant across from Key Food. And, yes, you're right: the old Madison Theater was beautiful and should have been designated a landmark.
That was nice. Brought back a lot of memories.
Actually, that clunker of a movie was called A stranger among us....they also filmed by the forest ave M train subway stop
I still have an AC in my window from Big Daddy.
Durow' s is no longer there. Condos/townhouses have been built in their place.
I live right around the block on linden and Irvine
Are you still doing tours? I was raised in Glendale.
Now and again if I find something interesting.
That store on 0.32 on the video use to be an J&B and the billbord was a marlboro cigarettes
I still remember smelling the KFC at Myrtle And Wyckoff coming out the L..
Bbbrothers , glad u enjoyed the video.....keep posted for more.
And to think there used to be an el just hovering above there
Wow, Hitchcock and Fonda in Ridgewood.
THIS LOOKS LIKE THE SWEETEST NICEST STREET IN THE CITY :)
Moitle Avenuh
there usedto be a good coffeeshopthere is it still thertedo you remember the mj train that went to downtown brooklyn
I used to take the MJ train down to Brooklyn Tech ... a 20 minute ride. Then they shut it down and we all had to take the M into Manhattan and change to get back into Brooklyn ... it doubled the length of the trip. When I was kid, you could still see the old trolley tracks all along Myrtle Ave.
the cattering hall is now going to be a supermarket i think in 2017
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed my video. I will be making more. This is just a hunch but by looking at your channel name tgimbel50...Do you have 2 sisters..one named Linda?
I think that Duane Reade store on the corner was a nightclub of some sort way back in the 50's and 60's.
I assume this area used to be dangerous 20 to 30 years ago

A Colombian based, Ecuadorian based Kentucky fried Chicken "of sorts?" What the hell are you smoking?
Was not smoking anything. There actually was a Hispanic version of KFC. Did not last even 6 months.
I believe it was called pollo campero
Absolutely correct. I patronized a couple of times
