If you know me, you probably know how in love I am with complicated characters, and therefore Azula.The point I'm trying to make in this video, is showing you how much Azula's actions, feelings, emotions are influenced by others, Ursa especially. Azula has always believed Ursa thought she was a monster. Children in particular are overly vulnerable to things like this: they go and act the way others expect them to, what's the point in proving them wrong? If think say so, it's probably true. So Azula made it true. Of course, Ozai plays a big part in it as well (which I probably haven't portrayed very well), he's always made sure Azula got what she wanted, used and developed her talent: giving Azula the (seemingly) control she wanted. Though he probably did this for all the wrong reasons, for making her a useful puppet in time of need. Obviously Ozai's side was right for her: what would you choose if you didn't know any better, people who think you're a monster, or people who think you're a prodigy?
Ursa, Mai & Ty Lee all loved Zuko more than her. She had her father, until Zuko got redeemed to him too. Her father uses HER plan, but refuses to take her with him, giving her the position of Firelord. That should be everything she could wish for, right? No. Azula has always tried for love and loyalty. She cared about her friends in her own way, but she didn't know how to handle with them since she takes example of what her father showed her. If you've never learned the true concept of other people's feelings, you're not going to understand them. Suddenly she sees betrayal everywhere. Confused with uncertainty she desperately tries to regain control again. But fails. And then Ursa appears to her in a vision. The only thing she thought still made sense - that she is, in fact, a monster - is contradicted by the statement of love by the only person she truly thought hated her. And that blow made her world cave in.
Zuko may not always have had his honor, but he had everything Azula needed.

Song choice? Well this song rips my heart out, and so does Azula, so it's basically a match made in heaven. I chose this version because I'm working on a video with the other one, and if it'll ever get done, at least there'll be a little bit of diversity.

i love how the show made Azula's character seem perfect in the beginning. Many real people are like that. Their lives seem perfect. Then the show slowly began to show her real feelings in the third season. She was slipping, but no one knew until her breakdown because she always pretended that she was okay and she was just perfect. She's not. I love it

Well Zuko was kind hearted before his father banished him. Actually that was why he was banished in the first place. He was only like Azula in the sense that he was a villain. Azula always had more of a clever and deceitful way of getting around. Zuko was full of anger, that's all
Yes they are Siblings, so they are sort of in the same position but Zuko is in way more luck.
In the final Agni Kai I had the feeling that they both faced someone they could have become under different circumstances.

This video definitely shows that even though Ozai favored Azula over Zuko, Ozai's "love", as well as Ursa's unintentional favoritism toward Zuko are what ultimately led to her downfall. It's clear that even though Zuko is the one with the visible scar, Azula is arguably scarred even deeper. Zuko had what Azula didn't and secretly longed for. Zuko had people who loved him. Azula did not. She wanted that, perhaps she didn't fully know she wanted it, but her father's influence made her cruel and cold and unable to show proper love.

I completely agree with you. Throughout the series we see this perceived image of her hatred, greed and competitive nature to gain over others. Manipulation at its finest. However, through the series we see she is so afraid to love as her mother did not direct this toward her or showed her any other way of treating others as her mother left and Zuko. Her fear comes out as Anger. As with many people this happens to but when it comes to having powers of fire-bending it’s way more destructive of course. It was just purely her and her evil father who just used her as power machine not a human-being. He didn’t teach her what emotions were. We see her instability when she becomes Jealous of Ty-Lee how she can flirt and communicate effectively. Azula i think realised that she is deeply troubled and there is something wrong with her. She knows it’s her mother to blame for this. She never showed her another way. She didn’t have to end up like her father. And I think Azula hated the fact she had otherwise she wouldn’t have gone mad in the process
I agree! Azula is way more tragic than Zuko. He was lucky!

I think Azula is a strongly misunderstood character and some people don't see that. Them and the other characters don't realize why she acts that way. They assume that she was just born cold-hearted. They don't know what she went through or what her past is. In the beginning of the show, she was a smart, determined girl. But when the show is at a end, You see she needs help and she's just lost along the way. She didn't know what she was doing, thinking she can defeat her own brother. It is truly sad how she changed through out the series. I actually feel bad for her and she's my favorite character on the show.

There's a moment that comes in everyone's life when every notion and desire we've built comes apart. It's in that moment when we begin to change. This change can be for the better if we accept it. But if we resist, we still will change no matter what; however, from that resistance comes a change for the WORST. This moment happened to Azula. She resisted the change... and changed for the worst. Which is why her story is so tragic.

@@MrFredde9999 I think the moment where mai and ty lee betrayed her , she already started slipping, all her life she was though that fear is the way to go , only to see her friends show otherwise. You can see the look on her face when mai chose love over fear , but she resisted .... and just like the original comment said; she changed for the worse
That moment also happened to zuko , but thanks to uncle iroh he was able to find his way , accept the change , struggle with it of course but redeem himself for himself in the end, unlike azula who had a mental breakdown.... it is tragic when you think of it
MrFredde9999 Yes like @llemonwater says, it starts with Mai and Tylee’s betrayal, then it escalated as she started questioning if her mom didn’t really fear her but actually loved her (hence the vision of her mom saying “no azula, I love you I do”) That was a break down of the excuses she used to value power and fear over love. But like we saw, she broke the mirror to stop the change that was knocking at her door. She stubbornly wanted to hold onto the idea that her mom never loved her because she used that as part of her identity that she saw as crucial to her power.
You don't even understand how often I've watched this video over the years, or how many people I've forced through it. This in, in my most humble opinion, the best Avatar video there is out there. In less than three minutes, you understand everything the show was doing with Azula's character, you understand her whole development, and it's amazing how you managed to do that. Everything about this video is perfect. Thank you for it.
i want to see her rise back to greatness. She was quite possibly the most damaged character in the entire series and i can not but want to give her a hug and proove that people cared about her
I love Azula since the beginning of the show
it's really sad to see her life fall apart like that - abandoned by her friends, lost her mind, her family... After I read the Search series I clearly understood that she was a paranoid person and needed professional help.

This is stunning. It captures Azula's tragic character arc perfectly. I love her as a character, she is so complex and deep down she really is just a child. I think she truly hated herself and had so many insecurities that really come into the light during Sozin's Comet. Once again, well done!

I always come back to this video now and then, and it still manages to tug at my heart. It reminds me of all the connections and similarities I shared with Azula, and the song describes everything she goes through perfectly.
This video is a lovely masterpiece. but y'know this very same song fits well also with Ursa's story in the ATLA comics.

This is absolutely gorgeous! It also perfectly sums up all my feelings in regards to Azula. Sure, she's an antagonist, and sure, she has some sociopathic tendencies - but the beach episode and the finale really show what made her turn out that way. It didn't have to be like that for her; she might have been more like Zuko, had things gone differently. And Grey's acting as she breaks down - that really hits home. This video is just heartbreaking and so, /so/ good. Thanks for uploading it!
This is the single best Azula video of all time, maybe the best ATLA video. Beautiful. Just beautiful. This makes me cry every time I watch it.
Nobody really understood the deaths of her bitter emotions towards everything until this episode. She is a really amazing character i could almost cry for how much pity i have towards her. Shes a perfect example of how much a lack of love and extreme pressure can take its toll on a person. Shes a true victim of war.

Even though she was "evil" she was by far my favorite character on the show. She was so complicated and misunderstood how to relate to people that it made me feel sorry for her. The final episodes of the third book when she goes crazy almost put me in tears.....

This video actually made me feel really bad for Azula. I mean, I felt bad for her before, but this video really shows how damaged she is. She is an awesome character, and one of the reasons I love the show so much! All of the characters are so well rounded and not one-dimensional. They're all so....real.
I think the people who say shes a cold hearted person needs to realize that shes been through so much and she is complicated. Everyone wouldnt understand her and why she acts the way she does. Everyone took Zukko's side over hers when they didnt quite understand the situation with her. She turned evil because she thought it was the only way to NOT feel pain, and thats why she would always compare herself to Zukko when it had nothing to do with him. Then she felt guilty of what she had become.

Azula is one of my favorite characters. I feel so bad for her because she was Ozai's greatest victim and she lost her mind, no matter how crazy, she's still very young, and everybody forgets that. This video is amazing, it really does her justice. Keep it up!
azula is my second favorite character behind aang, and this video alone made me want to rewatch the whole series im currently on (book 1: episode 3) just so i can relive how azula lost everything because of her being misguided, im glad shes being somewhat redeemed in the search though

In the end, even though Aang and everyone else achieved their happy endings, Azula was abandoned and left alone. I think Azula was always the most damaged, loneliest person out of them all, and the video highlights exactly what I feel for her. Beautiful video :)

Before watching this video and reading the description, I really disliked Azula. But now, you made me understand her so well, and I'm actually starting to love the character :) Your editing is flawless as always, and the song fits Azula perfectly
Zuko and Azula are clearly the most complex and well developed characters on the show. While the story of Zuko was gradually revealed throughout the series, Azula remained an enigma until the very end. As he grew to become a fulfilled hero, she was destroyed under the pressure of her darkness. Well done Bryan and Mike for creating 2 amazing characters. Btw Azula is gorgeous

Azula lost her mind on they way of perfection. She wanted to be perfect, a perfect soldier for her father, a perfect daugther for her mother and everything on it's place. Perfection does not exist, and Azula learned that from the direct way. AWESOME video :D

My heart is crying... It's perfect. Azula is one of my favourite characters, so I really love her story. It's really dark and certaintly not for a cartoon. I think it's one of the reason because of which Azula's personality wasn't showed really well and detailed.
