The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2021 US Open saw Russia's Daniil Medvedev and Great Britain's Emma Raducanu claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first major title, with 18-year-old Raducanu becoming the first-ever qualifier to achieve the feat. The 2022 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 30 - September 11.

Commentator after the match said "Reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated"
And we are talking about 2008. To think the man has faced the retirement question in the last 14 years and still keeps coming back against all odds is motivational.

2008 was the first time that retirement talk really started with Fed. It does sound incredulous in hindsight.

In the era where's most retired at early 30s, it's gonna be surfacing from time to time. At that time in the last 30ish year, only Roswall, Connors, and Agassi still maintain high competitive level well into mid (or late) 30s.

I don't know if it was about retirement. More so I would say the discussion was about Federer's decline and whether he was still able to win grand slams.

And this was the last US Open title that Roger won. After winning this 5 times in a row. WOW.
After Roger here, no one has defended their title the following year at the US Open. Here's the list of winners from 2009:
    2009 Del Potro
    2010 Nadal
    2011 Djokovic
    2012 Murray

    2019 Nadal
    2020 Thiem
    2021 Medvedev

Up to today, I still think it's a big big big mistake for roger to change his racket from 90 to 97, suggested by many so-called experts. The gap from 2013 to 2016 when Nadal and Djokovic were adding trophies to their collection, Roger choked so many times, the loss to Tsonga in Wimbledon was a big hurt to him, while years before he had totally different forehand.

    • @kurtjohnston6620
      @kurtjohnston6620 2 роки тому +3

Agreed, mayyybe a 92/93, but really he just needed to keep his forehand large enough to command more points. So many times since the 00's he has walked out on court playing smaller from the baseline. Even if having to exert himself more meant he was to finish up earlier - I doubt that way of thinking, he would have had substantially more success and GS titles to be able to retire with enough daylight between him and nadal, djoko, etc.

Mind you this was 2008, the year that Federer got Mono, and was lethargic much of the year. It put a big dent into his career with the pressure of Nadal taking Wimbledon from him, and when people started saying how Federer was on his downfall. The fact that he was able to bounce back and win a slam a whole decade later, is astonishing.

It was a transgression of world-historical proportions that Roger and Rafa never played each other in a single US Open match, let alone a final!
As in 2008, the two almost met on a handful of occasions. The fact that they didn't is not only frustrating, but mathematically annoying! Roger's first US Open was 2000, whereas Rafa's was 2002 I believe, so, the fact that they never once saw each other in the draw is astounding to contemplate.
Knowing, like many do, how raucous and electric the New York crowds can be, we were deprived of what, under regular or normal circumstances, would have probably been around 4-6 "matches for the ages!"

Then 10 to 11 slams, these 2 won after 30 years age, which shows how weakwest the younger generation players were in the period 2015 to 2022. Strongest era emperor - Sampras ( 1990 to 2002), medium era emperor - Roger federer ( year 2002 to year 2013) , the most weakest era - Gods -Nadal, Djoko (years 2013- 2022) .
