Commentator after the match said "Reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated" And we are talking about 2008. To think the man has faced the retirement question in the last 14 years and still keeps coming back against all odds is motivational.
In the era where's most retired at early 30s, it's gonna be surfacing from time to time. At that time in the last 30ish year, only Roswall, Connors, and Agassi still maintain high competitive level well into mid (or late) 30s.
I don't know if it was about retirement. More so I would say the discussion was about Federer's decline and whether he was still able to win grand slams.
This is my favorite version of Federer. No f’s given, he absolutely crushed the ball with authority in this tournament. It’s almost like he was taking his anger out this tournament after a frustrating year.
@@dradenhaven1549 just kept going to his forehand and getting burned and didn’t adapt. Then his first serve gradually deserted him and Delpo took control. Sad but yes, he should have finished him in straight sets.
I almost forgot how fast the pace was back when Federer was younger. Some serious power off the forehand wing. The point at 18:17 is a really nice demonstration.
And this was the last US Open title that Roger won. After winning this 5 times in a row. WOW. After Roger here, no one has defended their title the following year at the US Open. Here's the list of winners from 2009: 2009 Del Potro 2010 Nadal 2011 Djokovic 2012 Murray 2013 Nadal 2014 Cilic 2015 Djokovic 2016 Wawrinka 2017 Nadal 2018 Djokovic 2019 Nadal 2020 Thiem 2021 Medvedev 2022 ??????????????? BTW: in the long rivalry between Federer and Nadal. these two have never competed against each other at the US Open. Weird.
Up to today, I still think it's a big big big mistake for roger to change his racket from 90 to 97, suggested by many so-called experts. The gap from 2013 to 2016 when Nadal and Djokovic were adding trophies to their collection, Roger choked so many times, the loss to Tsonga in Wimbledon was a big hurt to him, while years before he had totally different forehand.
Agreed, mayyybe a 92/93, but really he just needed to keep his forehand large enough to command more points. So many times since the 00's he has walked out on court playing smaller from the baseline. Even if having to exert himself more meant he was to finish up earlier - I doubt that way of thinking, he would have had substantially more success and GS titles to be able to retire with enough daylight between him and nadal, djoko, etc.
Mind you this was 2008, the year that Federer got Mono, and was lethargic much of the year. It put a big dent into his career with the pressure of Nadal taking Wimbledon from him, and when people started saying how Federer was on his downfall. The fact that he was able to bounce back and win a slam a whole decade later, is astonishing.
Didn't realise Andy had 2 USO finals. Andy was so impressive then making the Big 3 into the Big 4 with justification. They feared him unlike Warwinka who was a factor but they didn't fear him.
I think it has always been just the big three, then Andy Murray by himself, and then everyone else. I think to be included with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic he would need more than 3 GS.
I always thought with the court at this speed Federer would have won most times against Nadal had they played each other here 2008-2011. Almost happened but fate intervened each year.
Year 2009 also fed should have won US open, making it 6 times in a row and fed should have won year 2008 Wimbledon also, which would have been 7 times in a row. These 2 would have been always an unbeatable records of this sport
It was a transgression of world-historical proportions that Roger and Rafa never played each other in a single US Open match, let alone a final! As in 2008, the two almost met on a handful of occasions. The fact that they didn't is not only frustrating, but mathematically annoying! Roger's first US Open was 2000, whereas Rafa's was 2002 I believe, so, the fact that they never once saw each other in the draw is astounding to contemplate. Knowing, like many do, how raucous and electric the New York crowds can be, we were deprived of what, under regular or normal circumstances, would have probably been around 4-6 "matches for the ages!"

2008 was the first time that retirement talk really started with Fed. It does sound incredulous in hindsight.

Federer also made all 4 grand slam finals the following year too. how could anyone question him about retiring in 2008? that's mind boggling
Because the consensus was that his level had dropped. I remember ACE tennis magazine (now defunct) running an article on it in late 2009 (iirc).
