Do you want to learn how to replace an old thermostat? Maybe yours is from 1970 and has seen better days (nothing against the 70s it produced Star Wars and the Godfather!!!)
This week's video is about replacing your old thermostat with a new programmable version.
This is totally something you can do yourself and I wanted to share a few tips that have served me well.
The thermostat in this video isn't expensive ($25) and can be used for a heating & cooling system.
Two big tips I have would be
1. to use vise grips to hold the thermostat wires in place (so they don't fall into the wall) and
2. to place some blue painter's tape on the wall to collect drywall dust when you drill the holes for the thermostat base
Check out my video for all the details on how to replace an old thermostat

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I was kind of freaking out about doing it but it wasn't hard at all and your video definitely helped!!! Saved me and my family a bunch of stress and money! And the best part is we now have a programmable thermostat! Thank you again!
Thank you so much for making this video! I am NOT handy at all. Our 15+year old thermostat died. I decided to buy a new one.Your video gave me the courage to tackle the task myself. I was able to successfully replace mine! Your video is clear, concise, detailed with step by step instructions. You added a list of materials you used to get the job done. I followed your advice though and put the stickers on based on the old wire configuration (black wire went into pin for yellow wire and red wire went in RC pin). My only feedback is to include the removal one or two of the original wires for those of us who are completely not handy and have never worked with wires before. I know you edited it out as it seems very straight forward. But I think it is helpful - even if it means we are watching you use the precision screwdriver to remove the wires that are connected to the pin.
Thank you so much for this very informational tutorial! I was so afraid that I would mess up and your video was the first one I watched! I became so confident immediately! Thank you!!!! 👍🏼 new supporter!!!!
We are first time home owners & our home inspector recommended that we replace the mercury therm. Thanks for the video! Will most certainly be coming back here for advice
This was very helpful for us single, independent ladies. Your instructions were very clear. Thank you.
Thanks Tiffany
Home Repair Tutor it appears you have two whites in the W? I have no yellow wire. Because no a/c? So do I put BOTH whites in the W?
Shut up. You'll ALWAYS need a man.
Find a husband, and you wouldn't have that problem.
Thank you so much for just getting to it and staying on topic. You're a lifesaver
Thanks. I had to do this for the first time and after reading the instructions, I watched your video. Good directions!
+valarie quick thank you, hope the tips helped, great job 👍
It was a great video and I really appreciate I could clearly understand very clear every word and the volume was great as well. Thanks for a job well done.
Thank you. This video was perfect and answered all my questions. Next stop Home Depot to get a Honeywell. Keep up the good work. Thanks again
Sweet, did you install one?
Thanks for the video. Does the replacement thermostat have to match the old thermostat - for example whether or not it controls both heat and cooling?
Man I shook my head so many times during this video 🤦♀️!!
Take a pic of the wiring, use blue tape to catch the dust, vice grips to hold the wires...!! 😄
Awesome tutorial - thank you for all of the helpful ideas along the way!!
thank you for watching, hopefully the tips helped as well!
They certainly did!!
I'm continuing to work smarter and not harder going forward after watching your video 😊😊
Thank you again!!
This was great and quick!!! He's very self explanatory!!
This video was excellent and very clever! Thank you!
I almost never comment on videos but I must thank you for this really easy video.
I bought exact same model as yours. tmrrw I try installing to ur guide. thanks!
Been thinking about doing this, now I have no excuse. Thanks for the video! Keep up the good work with the videos!
Thanks hulksmash865 - I know there are more detailed videos but this one was primarily done to show how easy the installation can be. So you can totally do this yourself
Easy and very detailed thank you.
Thanks for the video. The old thermostat I have is a vertical one, and the new one to replace it lays horizontal so it looks like I will have to drill two new holes, and plug the other ones as they will be showing at the top and bottom of the new base plate for the new thermostat. I guess I will have to twise the wires around and the prong connector. I hope this will not be too difficult of a job. THanks!
So sweet to the point. You are the best.
Thanks! I have to replace mine today and I'm sure this is gonna help me!!
Thank you for your help. I changed myself my thermostat!!
When you connect the red wire, do you connect it to only the R terminal or you also connect the R and RC from the red wire?
Hey great video! I have an old intertherm thermostat from the 80s. All the wires are easy expect the blue wire which is labeled A. What does this mean and where do I put it on the new Honeywell thermostat like yours?
very conise vid, subscribed at one time earlier i guess but went back here. I have a carrier unit 5 years new. I run the ON fan alot during the day. recently when i dropped the a/c cool to 75 from 78, 'the cool' word blinking, but the blower does not come on to cool....please advise?
thanks for your easy step by step explanation. and the money it saves me to install it myself, super cool.
Very good directions, Thank you
Good observation & question presented by Kilroy below which I noticed & questioned to myself as well. Intuitively, the color coding of the wiring should match the terminal color designations. Why the discrepancy? Otherwise an excellent video. Do you have an answer to this?
Yes. A Sensi WiFi thermostat. I needed to install a dedicated c wire because my old thermostat was a four wire . Your instructions made it really easy. Thanks again
Nice, those look cool. Great job!
It´s very cheap here ===>>>> amzn.to/2JPt8ej
Mine has a C wire which is brown and then has a black wire which is not Connected to anything it’s just hanging? Where do I put the se extra wires?
thank you this video helped me very well
Thanks for the information. It's easy to follow. . .
Great video really helped.
Super easy like you said. thanks!
awesome!!
Very helpful. Thanks
Very easy to understand video. Thanks so much!!!
Glad to you liked it njdivad, my pleasure to help :D
Is drilling require in replacing every thermostat and turning off power?
I'm completely and totally devoid of handyman skills but this looks like something I can do. In any case, I'm going to find out. Thanks for the video. It mentioned a number of tips that I probably won't find in the instructions that come with a new thermostat.
how did it go ?
vision1707, thank you for asking. Long-story-short: It turned out the problem wasn’t with the thermostat at all. The drain-line had clogged and this resulted in an automatic shut-off of the a/c. My a/c guy, who I’ve used for years, blew it out with a compressed-air thing. I then went up in the attic with him and he showed me where to pour a pint of bleach every six weeks or so to keep the line clear. I will be doing that religiously from now on! “An ounce (or a pint) of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
I asked him if he charged a weekend premium, for coming out on a Saturday, and he said no. I said that he should. I then said, “I’m paying you an extra $60 whether you want it or not. You can take it in cash or I put it on the check.” He thanked me and accepted three twenties. Honest, competent, reliable repairman/contractors who consistently do good work are worth their weight in gold. Amen.
The whole thing was a learning experience that unfortunately included a few days of discomfort smack dab in the middle of a Houston summer. “Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”
Nice video! Looks like a rather simple project! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
Thanks buddy, it isn't bad at all. I couldn't function without our programmable thermostat. Love that little dude.

I wish all DIY videos were done this concisely, thanks bro!
thank you, hopefully the tips help
Thank You!!!
Thank you very much! I am fixing my thermostat tomorrow.
Thank you young man!
Very helpful thank you
Great video! Is it just as easy to install a “smart thermostat “?
Could you set it to either side if you have a gas/electric package unit?
Very good
Jeff: Thanks very much. I stopped your instructions at each step and the replacement procedure was successful.
great job!!
thank you!
Great video thanks!
Thanks Robert

Hi if i have electric heat woul it work the same if I don't have a cooling system?
I just moved into a new home yesterday, unfortunately the Air Conditioner IS NOT WORKING! but besides that the thermostat i CANNOT Read what it says! This helped me so much
Thank you.
I have one of those circular twist mercury ones ( sorry i have no clue about this stuff) and it just broke when we were moving a piece of furniture and it smashed into it. Will this video still help me?
Almost a perfect video
For people that have never done this like me I would of liked to see how to install the wires on whatever they go on
Thank u very much nice video
i would like to move my thermostat one way or the other because the placement is right in the center of where i want to hang a large mirror. can this be done easy enough?
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I can only imagine how much $$ you saved me when my 11+ year old thermostat crapped out on a Sunday afternoon in 100+ degree Texas heat. Your wonderful video gave me the knowledge & confidence I needed to hop in the car, head to Home Depot, and solve the problem myself. Bless you, Home Repair Tutor!!!
Xandra Vee glad the video helped, and even more excited that you did it yourself :D
Thank you!!!!
Thank you
Is drilling require qnd turn off powrr cause i saw some tech dony need too?
Thanks!
glad the vid helped ;)
I changed mine.. but how long does it take to get cooler in the house?
Just had a new gas furnace install with the same thermostat. The fan will not run in "on" mode .... wiring issue I'm thinking? Great video btw.
I pulled too hard last time and the screws are falling out of the wall. I've been using scotch tape to keep it firm against the wall. Do I need to call the furnace guy to fix it? The holes the screws were in seem too big now, from all the wiggling I did when I was trying to open it before. Hope that made sense, thanks.
Old one went kaput!!!! Lol thank you for the knowledge needed it
Do we have to turn offf the electrival because a heat guy who came to help me in 2011 didnt
Thank you sir! That looks easy enough.
+xblackdemonx glad to help
Nice
good job
+jsmilers thank you
Thanks! Do you know if I can use this Honeywell with Carrier Heat Pump? Is it compatible?
+Alex P not sure, but Honeywell tech support is very good. Call them and you'll be in good hands
Very good directions. The only thing missing is when to turn back on the power, otherwise easy to follow and install your own.
+Sabrina Isom thanks, glad it helped
sadly, that would be the step my hubby would forget
Wait but how do I install the batteries?
It is really cool vedio
How would you know if your thermostat needs to be replaced and not your baseboard heaters?
the tape to catch the dust is great
lol, thanks. It's a small tip but works for me.
When you opened up the old thermostat, the wires didn't seem to be connected according to the color coding....Don't the RGBWY correspond to Red, Green, Blue, White and Yellow?
What if my new thermostat has a red wire going from the red to the redc??? I only have red yellow and green wires available no redc..
Thanks for your help but it happened to be a fuse on the circuit board in the furnace fixed for 4.00 at the auto store
Great job James. How did you figure out it was the fuse?
Thanks man! It’s no big deal if the screws do t go into a stud?
no, as long as you use plastic anchors it should be fine, very rarely will both screws anchor into a stud
The yellow was clearly in the B location on the old thermostat - and the blue was in W2. When you put the new one on, you switched those, putting the yellow in the Y and blue (W2) in the B slot. Why?
We are looking to update our thermostat, and your video confused me.
Same
When do you turn the electricity back on?
Do you need to the turn the power off to the A/C before you connect the new thermostat or is the voltage fairly low?
turn it off to be safe
Would just flipping off the circuit breaker work? I'm not sure if my A/C has an on/off switch.
What can I do if there is only cables?
I don’t know which cable goes where when I put the new one on
thanks partner
Cody Wynn hope it helped :D
Old thermostat had one wire to RH and one wire to W/B and a jumper from RH to RC (but I don't have air conditioning. The new thermostate has B, O, G, T, W, Not Used, R ad RC. So, where do I put the wires? I'm assuming I would put the RH into the R and the W/B into the W. Is that correct? And I would think I would just not use the jumper, since I don't have air conditioning. Help!
hey thx bro
Replaced old thermostat, gemtech....it had a red jumper wire on two R's (no red wire from wall). This thermostat comes with a wire over the two R's. I did not put the red one I have. The unit turns on only when placed on heater and I'm left holding a red jumper wire?? :/
Do they all use the same wires
Will a thermostat cause your AC not to cut on
i have 7 wires.. where does the black and a brown go on the back of this thermostat?
If I need to remove one altogether and not replace, what can I do?
Don't understand why the yellow wire on the old thermostat was on the terminal 'B' and was put on terminal 'Y' on the new thermostat and likewise the blue wire on terminal 'W2' was put on terminal 'B', when it seems all instructions indicate to label each wire with the lettering of the original terminal and to IGNORE the actual color of the wires!
Foking Exactly
Or why the wired labeled W2 was connected to B slot..🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽
Could I get electrocuted changing the batteries? Should I not touch the little wires?
My wire wire isn't even embedded to the old thermostat. That's what's confusing me. Do i put the yellow wire on the y for the new thermostat
I wish a video existed of at least ONE install that didn't include all the wires and how they upgraded. All these installs magically have the most up to date wiring for their thermostat (which barely requires a video to show you how to install at that point).
Sorry Phenom, it wasn't my choice to have updated wires. It was simply what was there and I rolled with it.
I have a extra brown and black wire on mines?? Where does those go?
do you not need to cut the power supply first?
my mom has 2 wires, red and green...the stat os blowing cold air. .we live in New England, I think my bro hooked up R and G? any ideas? she heats w gas..thnks
+ltetobago this is not enough info to determine exactly whats going on, if she has a gas boiler then she only need 2 wires, if she has gas forced had air she will need 3 wires unless her furnace has a mother board and can energize the fan from the board. give me a little bit more info
Well the landlord put in a new thermostat but to us it is blowing air, like forced cold air..her house is not cold but its uncomfortable have cold air blowing on you...i have forced air too but my air is always warm...she's dealing with it and the lanlord will handle it but I don't think they know what they're doing...thanks for responding but I dont have any more info on it...appreciate it
ltetobago Sounds like the landlord should call a pro hvac company to evaluate the operation and performance doesn't sound like a thermostat issue more of an system performance. hope this helps
Probabbly you already solve the issue, but if she has a gas furnace , she needs to conect the wires in R and W.
When was I supposed to turn the power back on, Good video buddy
after the thermostat was installed 👍🏼
@@HomeRepairTutor I had to say it buddy , That was a good video
Here's a url link to a tutorial on the thermostat he intsalled
Where do I look to see if my furnace is electric or gas?
