It was time for me to replace my thermostat so I filmed the whole process of me installing a new Nest thermostat and tried to answer as many frequently asked thermostat installation questions as I could in the process. Hope the video helps!

    Good instructional video. When doing any wire work where the wire might drop into the wall I always tape on a long piece of strong string. That way I just pull the wire back through if it falls. Never have to cut into the drywall with this technique.

    In quarantine and recently retired, I have focused on making the best of all my situations including HVAC. I never had time to drill down on the flaws in my home to resolve them until now. I had a faint rotten egg smell in the kitchen that was there for years. I hired our HVAC company to check for gas leaks and they never found it. I hired an energy evaluation company to examine my home and they found the leak. For years, I was sitting on a bomb! My former HVAC company was mostly focused on money and less on service. Your videos gave me the knowledge and the background to fire my HVAC company and move on. It cost me, but I had the satisfaction of calling out their managers for poor service and offering up my contempt and disrespect. After getting the gas line fixed, the crawlspace did not stink nearly as bad. This was a very negative experience, but it confirmed the age old lesson of SELF RELIANCE.

    Well explained instructional video. My son want to install this thermostat in his new home this weekend. I have a suggestion regarding about the wire falling inside the wall. Before you disconnect all the wires, tie a long thread on the cord just in case the hole behind the old thermostat is larger than the spread out wires. That way you have something to fish it out just in case sh**T happens. Also use an ice pick to poke a hole in the wall so that you can start the mounting screws easier.

    Great job Jay! I didn't hesitate "investing" time watching one of your videos despite the fact that I've changed a few thermostats in the past without much issue. Some interesting takeaways: the cavity behind the thermostat can in some cases influence the temperature reading on the t-stat. Makes complete sense and I definitely never considered that a point to consider when updating / changing t-stats in the past. Thanks for the tip and heads up! I really like your approach on specifically selecting a thermostat that consumers have reported issues on in order to enhance your ability to learn and troubleshoot moving forward. Excellent move! I installed a Honeywell programable WiFI a few years ago and would likely go with the Nest moving forward due to it's simplistic exterior design, aesthetic qualities and seemingly enhanced user interface. However, I have too heard mixed reviews.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you Holt! I appreciate you watching and commenting even though replacing a thermostat is nothing new for you. The biggest issue that people have with the Nest is actually the fact that it is a learning thermostat. It learns your temperature patterns, when you are home or not by keeping track of how often someone walks past it (which is a flawed idea), and automatically sets up a temperature program for the homeowner. People find this very frustrating because the temperatures tend to "go up and down on their own". I will probably make a few more videos on it now that I have the thermostat myself - on how to turn off the learning feature and how to turn off the programming.

      Word of Advice TV very interesting. Logic sounds awful. I’m surprised a company as big as Nest would go to market with software that like you said would drive most people nuts. Kudos to you for spotting the opportunity to put out some good content helping those that are probably annoyed with such out-of-the box programming. You put out great and really well prepared and thought out content and can present it clearly. If I had to guess, to put out a 10-20 minute video, you’re probably looking at .5 hours rough idea and material acquisition, ~2-3 hours research and framework drafting, ~1 hour actual video shooting, ~3-4 hours video editing and publishing. 8 hours per week on average time alone for 1 video a week. Plus a full-time job, kid, wife, survival planning and prep. You stay busy, thanks again for the content!

The new generation + whatever updates seems to have taken care of the majority of the bugs but it can still do weird stuff 😅 You broke down the video prep time pretty accurately actually! I’ll say again, if you pull your thermostat off the wall and the C is black, hook black up to C. Everyone is concerned, because of the video, that C must be blue. Your filter-changer attitude isn’t helping anybody

    I was on the fence about getting a Nest thermostat. Your video is so clear and easy to follow... The best I've seen thus far. I'm definitely going to get one. I feel confident that it will work smoothly on my system (my current thermostat is almost identical to your old one). Can't wait to try it out! Thanks so much!

    Really great tips! The Nest thermostat installation seems pretty straight forward but I prefer to be overly prepared for any electrical projects. I came to your video after watching Google’s Nest install guide on their YT and I’m really glad I did. Your tips were really helpful and necessary, especially the tip about spreading the wires before removing the old base plate, that never would’ve occurred to me until potentially dropping the wire in the wall and turning a small project into a nightmare. Thank you for being so thorough with all the little details and giving me the confidence to tackle my first thermostat swap.

    This video is very straight forward and you explain everything very well. Your old Honeywell thermostat looks almost exactly like the one I am trying to replace. I had to rewind and re-watch you labeling the wires again.
