Giant shark encounter in Iceland
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- This was filmed in August 2022. We had seen lots of whales and dolphins during the day. Late in the evening we decided to go out on the boat. We skipped life-vests this time because we wouldn't go too far from the coast and the only life-vests available were large and bulky. But after rowing a little bit further into the fjord we noticed something floating not too far from us. We decided to go and investigate but suddenly we were further out from the coast than we had decided, and that's when this huge beast appeared. I just heard some additional sound of water moving and looked over my sister´s shoulder when I noticed this fin coming straight at us. At first I thought it might be an orca swimming sideways, but it never went up for air. I rowed to the left and the shark followed, I rowed to the right and the shark turned as well to the right. Then I took a U-turn back to the coast and the shark continued to follow. Then I decided to stop rowing and see if it would loose interest. At that point I was quite sure that it was a basking shark but still worried that it might collide with the small rowing boat that we were on. As soon as I stopped rowing it passed us and went down under the surface and we didn't see it again.
It may look like we were much further away from shore than we actually were. The furthest distance to land was 400m but it is only visible at the very beginning of the video. - Розваги
Guys as a marine biology student, from the fin I’m pretty sure that’s a basking shark. They’re really big but they’re harmless

Not sure if there was a joke intended there, but basking sharks are filter feeders.
They're harmless as long as you don't spook them as they have the size and power to tip a small boat.

For all of you saying it's a whale shark, this is filmed in Iceland and they don't live anywhere near the cold waters around Iceland. This is almost certainly a basking shark. Greenland sharks usually wouldn't get this big and their back fin is much smaller and more bent than on this shark. They are also more brown-ish in color where the basking shark is more gray-ish. All other sharks in the ocean around Iceland are way too small for it to have been any of them.
That’s definitely a basking shark swimming so close to the surface. He’s just getting a snack.
@@Toka972whale shark isn’t a whale

Basking shark is the immediate impression this gives off, which I am happy to see others have noted as well. A long and lanky shark species, not one of the overly powered ones, you can see it even has trouble with the dorsal fin staying firmly up the farther it lifts out of the water. These normally filter feed on very small sea-life very deep down in the dark depths of the ocean, harmless to humans, aside from those getting a heart attack after seeing the immense size.
Not *entirely* harmless to humans since basking sharks are known to jump several feet up into the air at times. Getting hit directly by that would certainly kill you lol
