The dub opening of 5Ds is unironically catchy.

The best thing about the dubbed opening is that it was chosen by the fans in a contest!

This video is unironically amazing. You are the first person I've ever seen online who has thought about Yugioh 5D's this much! I thought I was the only one!
The way the story starts off as this scathing critique on classism and how Yusei and Jack treat their success/power one they acquire it (Jack abandons the satellite that raised him, to live the life of privilege on his own. Yusei brings his friends up at every turn and generally doesn't accept the lavish privileges afforded to him by being a duel champion). Their dynamic in the early season is genuinely one of my favourites in the series, and the way the villains are built up is better than most kid's shows. Your insights here, like the Akira similarities, are fascinating too! To me, the motorscycles and dueling were an expression of freedom (like motorcycles and card games are in reality for many people too!) and seeing each character's relationship with what the game and sport means tot hem was always fascinating to me too.
The series goes a bit crazy by the end once those illuminati robots show up, and it just turns into nonsense. But I do think the early seasons had way more going on than most people credit them.

omg i'm glad you enjoyed, this is easily the video i most enjoyed making. I'm a big fan of dystopian sci-fi so I have a real soft spot for YGO 5Ds, and I put a lot of effort particularly into the visual humour in this video

SO MUCH YES FOR THIS VIDEO
I used to hate the show just cuz they were on motorcycles but in rewatching with my evolved lizard brain I found the show to be one of the best series in the franchise!!
(Great comedy bits by the way)

Glad the comedy landed, I really TRIED with the skits in this video! I worked super hard on this whole vie. I'm expecting it to underperform though, and it already is, which is disheartening lmao

@@CurmudgeonMedia I know exactly how you feel, Ill spend countless hours making a vid only to see it underperform BUT I always tell myself that's it's just time to try again 😅
Keep up the great work man!!!

I watched it as a kid and tried again when I was 19/20 just for fun. Good lord if the writers were 100% Akira fanboys. Everything in that season screams Akira. Yusei's motorcycle is literally the "can i copy your homework" meme of Akira's legendary motorcycle. Even the animations of them slide with the motorcycle to face their opponent heavily remember Akira. Someone at Yu-Gi-Oh studios was high enough to think unironically "You know what, GX was too positive, let's mix Yu-Gi-Oh with freaking Akira, what could be wrong"

These kinds of academic thoughts about Yugioh have no place in my head because after memorizing enough obscure card rulings and 40-step combo flowcharts there simply aren't any brain cells left.

Another thing worth noting I think is the symbol of the motorcycle itself. Cars are often representative of this idea of being sensible and reliable, whereas motorcycles are shown to have more 'edge'. Often being used as short hand for a character being an outsider or playing by their own rules.

The main villain for the first part of the show. He says that one's deck must be balanced. What tickles me is that he rides a sort of monocycle. A type of motorbike that requires an immense amount of balance and skill to ride at any high speeds.

I....actually liked 5Ds....like, yeah card games on motorcycles is kinda super silly but I enjoyed the plot. Something about a poor person(like me) trying to escape the crappy situation they are in and then slapping dragons into it just...speaks to me =w=

Ah, what wonderful memories. 5Ds was the point where I chose to cut my ties with the Yu-Gi-Oh! sphere... The more types of cards, the more rules, the less I actually enjoyed the game.
I'll always cherish the original show, GX, and the first few episodes of 5Ds, they'll hold a place in my heart.

You don't really need something "symbolic of the chaotic modern city space" when your story is set directly in that city space. The bikes in Akira were inspired by Tron, hence the physics-breaking light trails they leave behind. They're well-designed and work well as complimentary set pieces. 5D's makes them the focus of the entire show. The idea is functionally nonsensical. They were added for no other reason than the marketing and creative teams said "kids like bikes, this will sell more cards." But, at the end of the day, we're talking about a show where a children's card game is a matter of life and death. It's all pretty stupid. It's okay for things to be stupid.

While I've never really watch Yu-Gi-Oh or played the card game I quite liked 5d thought I didn't really like the main hero cast especially the main 3 of Jack, akiza and the main spike hair guy. While jack got better as the show went on the other 2 felt static and while akiza finally got some development with her family and friends that all happened in one episode, witch change my opinion of them, still I don't really like the main guy tho same with crow kinda anoing guy who joins later and kinda grew on me but still kinda anoing. Also the main reason city's are so confusing today is because of people and time, as more and more people left country sides to go to larg city's the development of said city needed to expand alot to cope and this over time has made less and less sence since newer technology has come along and was simply thrown into the mix and nou some 200 years later the city's build with bricks and steel don't really grow with us so we need to upgrade and repair which rarely happens so most places just falls into shitholes and are just buldosed and new buildings are built, a great example of this is the UK where you need a permit to even make repairs but will most likely be turned down because some buildings are nearly 1000 years old.

as much as I filled this video with irony, if you think for one second that I made a researched video essay with actual academic sources about YGO 5Ds without GENUINELY liking the show and thinking it has things of substance to say, you are DEAD WRONG

yes, my point is that the fact they had to put that sign up in the first place is indicative of the hostile behaviour local tournaments often have to deal with

    • @CurmudgeonMedia
      @CurmudgeonMedia  2 роки тому

The context of the sign is that this shop had to stop hosting local YGO tourneys for adults because of the aggressive behaviour. To be clear, I am NOT saying it is mean for them to request people be civil. Looking back on this video, I can see how my annotations of the image may be a bit more ambiguous than intended 😅
