Why Scavengers Reign is Peak Horror
Scavengers Reign was the best animated series of 2023. The world of animation and cartoons is a much richer one for the existence of these bold new takes on horror and science fiction. Naturally, HBO did basically nothing to market it, and promptly abandoned it before it got picked up by Netflix in 2024. Fingers crossed a season 2, eh? Scavengers gonna Reign...

    I absolutely LOVE the rival dynamic. I think it has so much potential for storytelling and also gives the opportunity to make the characters relatable. Some of my favorite examples besides Midoria and Bakugo are Shoto and Toya (there's some interesting parallels there), Catra and Adora from She-Ra, Jinx and Vi from Arcane, Kageyama and Hinata from Haikyu, Azula and Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender, Fujino and Kyomoto from Look Back, and even some examples from real life like Metallica and Megadeth. I've even had these sorts of rivalries in my own life from my time playing competitive Splatoon. I can say firsthand that rivalries really make you question what your goals are and the kind of person you want to be because it makes you stare at your insecurities in the face. There's nowhere to hide, and because of that, you have no choice but to improve yourself or you'll be left behind. I think that's why these dynamics are so compelling if done right. And I also think it's why a lot of the time these characters end up being really close by the end of the story.

    I'm so happy about the way you analyzed Katsuki, there are still so many people who don't understand the point of his character or the journey he has to go through and how it all ties to Izuku's character development as well. They both wouldn't be nearly as compelling without the other and their dynamic is so interesting to watch. The last bonus chapter (431), which I don't consider to be canon since Horikoshi didn't participate in its creation, kind of ruins the relationship Katsuki and Izuku have built for me since I feel like Izuku's spark completely died along with the embers and he felt really ooc. Will you be making a video about it? I've discussed it with several people by now and I'd be interested in hearing about someone's opinion who's also aware of the ways their dynamic works.

He’s been my favorite mha character and one that I look up to, and Crimson Riot too (despite their being little screen time of him). Honestly my first exposure to mha was my friend yapping about it, and he said like "there's this one character who's like, obsessed with manliness". And from that small description I expected to dislike Kirishima, because.. c'mon. A shonen character who shouts about being manly? That's dime a dozen. And it genuinely warms my heart how much he's totally subverted my expectations, and how much I've come to love him for it

      I've been thinking on how best to reply to this, and I think it is to say that--something I've realised about Spiritfarer is that it doesn't just make you cry, it makes you feel a genuine simulation of grief. Getting to the end of this game, I must have been bawling for the last hour of play, right through the credits, and I really feel like that experience is so unlike anything else I've had with art or media because I was ACTUALLY grieving Stella. Which is so weird, right? Like, that's not a real person, that's a cluster of pixels and code, and yet here I was, grieving her. Anyway, that is to say, this game is an untouchable work of art.

      @@CurmudgeonMediaHonestly same...I did the Stellas last voyage quest 2 times in the same save. The first time I didn't have any emotions but the same day at night during the second time I couldn't stop crying. This was the best way to start the new year, crying my eyes out to a game about grief that helps you find inner peace in your soul. I love this game so much❤

    Conservatives can and do support shows like the Owl House and She-Ra. The problem isn't conservatives but the fanatical religious right. I'm a strict constitutionalist conservative and love both of those shows. I'm also a gnostic Atheist. Conservatives are about keeping government small and ensuring individual liberty, not controlling the sexuality of others. It was after Regan that the evangelists began to infect the party. They need to be kicked back into the shadows and told to mind their own business.

    Both science fiction and fantasy have a huge deficiency in how much they include biochemistry, geochemistry, weather, geology, biology, neurology and psychology. There's always vague chemistry or physics going on but beyond that I think a lot of speculative fiction writers ignore huge parts of what makes magic and specualtion so much fun in terms of how much you can play with every aspect of reality. Octavia Butler, Ted Chiang, China Mieville, Phillip K Dick, Thomas Ligotti, Jorge Luis Borges, Ursula K Le Guin and China Mieville all have fantastic fiction emphasize nontraditional aspects of sci-fi and fantasy, and their settings and characters naturally trigger philosophical thoughts.

    2:56 ok but can we talk about how Catra isn't even toxic anyway. her best friend of her entire life literally left her for the people their organization is against. you cant really lame her for being so rude and arrogant. also Lumity is actually my fav ship like ever its just so comforting and I don't know why its just a masterpiece

    • @CurmudgeonMedia
      @CurmudgeonMedia 2 місяці тому

      I'm 100% a catra defender but I am not of the mind that she did nothing wrong. Catra is a terrific character whose arc is written very well, but that arc is still a redemption arc, and that redemption is grounded in the acute knowledge that Catra did a lot of things very, very wrong. Adora can, if nothing else, plead ignorance before being presented with irrefutable evidence that the horde were evil colonizers. Catra, on the other hand, outright says out loud that she knows the Horde were evil from the start and basically didn't care, displaying her highly mercenary and callous attitude from the start. In the face of literal war crimes, Catra's feelings of abandonment don't excuse the things she does, and that's completely intentional on the writers' part. Catra IS Toxic--she's Toxic to Adora, to Scorpia, to Entrapta. She literally sentences Entrapta to death by exposure for trying to go back on what was a disastrous science experiment with world-ending consequences, entirely for the sake of her own ego. The important thing to keep in mind here is that this doesn't mean Catra is beyond redemption. I LOVE Catra, I love how she's written, and I love that she won me over in the end. Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions put it best in saying that if we reserve redemption only for the characters who basically didn't do anything wrong, is it really redemption at all?

    • @MarzPlaysYT
      @MarzPlaysYT Місяць тому

      @@CurmudgeonMedia yeah i get that and i agree but there was no way that they couldve known the organization was evil. Obviously we find out catra did and i think the reason she didnt leave is because there wouldnt be anywhere for her to go. but i agree

    • @CurmudgeonMedia
      @CurmudgeonMedia Місяць тому

      @@MarzPlaysYT Adora didn't know because Adora is--bless her cotton socks--not known for her blistering intelligence. And again, I simply disagree with you. Catra could have gone with Adora. I think Catra stayed because she felt betrayed by Adora, abandoned by her. Is that a reasonable reaction to have? No. But it's one which is perfectly in-keeping with the profile of her character which had been established up to that point, and her choice to act rashly on that unfounded sense of betrayal is an important factor in our understanding of her. I think Catra stayed for a slew of egocentric reasons that make perfect sense in the context of her character because the show is well-written. I think that we need to avoid the trap of defending the actions of characters we like on the grounds that we like those characters. I understand and sympathize with that impulse--when we feel affinity towards a character, it's natural to want everything they do to be excusable or just or honest. But that would be inauthentic to the reality that people can and often do commit awful things, or act in ways which are entirely self-motivated. When Catra reaches her low point and is given a brutal but accurate scolding my double-trouble, it is a necessary and deserved scolding. Catra was often cruel, brutal, violent, and selfish. And that's what makes her redemption all the more brilliant and meaningful. What matters is not that "catra did nothing wrong" (and I wish people would stop saying stuff like that, it's ridiculous). It is that catra did many, many things that were wrong, but we understand where those behaviours came from, and she corrected her course in a way which is powerful and moving.

    I took years to finish the game, more because of the intense farming requirements and similar stuff (and also because I locked progression with Bruce that delayed some upgrades); but, even then, when I finally finished it this year it just broke me. Atul had remained in the ship with me since I started the game back in 2021, and how he left was painfully similar to how a family friend left us when I was a teenager; Jackie hit very close to home, with his worries and internal conflicts; Stanley's childish worries just destroyed me, and Gustav's leaving after such a long time, with those hugs he gave me, felt like watching that cool professor you had go away. It's a very kind game, which can make you cry a lot, but never because it's trying to hurt or cheaply tear-jerk you: instead, it speaks from the heart, and that's why it hits so hard. Thanks for the vid, Curmudgeon!

    lovely video and analysis!! - have you seen solar sand's video about the sublime? it's an excellent (much longer) watch. you demonstrated a high level of proficiency in this area here that really lines up with what was said there. - i was BLOWN AWAY by the primitive technology connection- i'm a long time lover of his work, and it seems to be having a huge influence on a lot of new art/media. i still remember my jaw dropping when i saw it referenced in an episode of rick and morty for the "perfect level" bit. john plant's editing style really seems to hit something deep and comforting for folks. - something that came up from me initially that was resolved by the end of your essay was the difference between the "sublime" and the"Eldritch". they're really similar, but there is a useful distinction between them that I feel justifies, keeping both in my vocabulary. i want to say more about the show and some of the ideas it stirred in me- thinking about alienation, what it means to be alien, and why "alien" sci-fi has gained such traction in the last half-decade or so- but I think I'll save that for a video of my own instead of trying to fit it all in here lol. a couple of final recs for the road: - 8 million species of aliens (YT video, exurbia) - an unkindness of ghosts (novel, rivers solomon) thanks again for making this 💜💜💜💜

    Deku barely has a grudge against Bakugo and he has 7 quirks now that pretty much makes him more powerful than bakugo. So how could they even be "perfect rivals" at that point?

      Izuku is still learning how to use all those abilities while Bakugo has had his whole life to perfect his abilities, it’s quantity vs quality. Also quirks aren’t everything, it’s also how they counter each other emotionally.

      @@KingNerdius Well that's a very one sided rivalry. For their rivalry to work both character need to have the same goal and willing to compete against each other. Bakugo wants to be the number 1 hero Deku just wants to be a hero who saves people. it would've been more interesting if deku got into UA without a quirk.

      @ but they both have the same goal, just a different outlook on how to get there

      @@KingNerdius technically I feel deku isn't really eager about being number 1 like Bakugo is. I feel like he just doesn't care and just want to be a hero. Deku just sees bakugo as a friend not a rival. He doesn't even have a fair grade against bakugo like he should

      @ no he still sees Bakugo as a rival, he acknowledges that plenty of times like when they in the training grounds. Besides they don’t have to acknowledge their rivalry for them to be good rivals. The way they play off each other is enough.
