Appreciate you discussing a deeper analysis of Madonna’s songs. She consistently tackles controversial issues in society in her music which resonates and remains relevant through time. Despite a real pro-choice messaging in this song-conservative, anti-abortion groups claimed that it was an endorsement of their position, while women and family planning advocates criticized it as encouraging teen pregnancy and undercutting contraception (like the use of condoms, timing sex during a woman’s non-ovulation period, etc.) as a way to avoid unwanted/unplanned pregnancy. And the Pope condemned its pre-marital sex theme. But Madonna is a pragmatist and non-judgemental here, she’s portraying a real dilemma that young women face.
Madonna this early in her career had elevated music videos not just as a promotional clip but as a short film that conveys a story.
I don't understand why younger generations never get she is singing about teenage pregnancy.
Maybe because this is not a big problem nowadays, in the 80s it was
They cannot comprehend a pop song about abortion. But the lyrics are not ambiguous. They just need to listen to them.
The lyrics were cleverly written to "disguise" the topic they are actually addressing in the song.
Even back in the 80s some people thought it was about "keeping her boyfriend".
@@walterhigo7658 you must be talking about dumb people.
It's very clearly about her preparing to tell her father she's a pregnant teen.
It's so weird how back when this song was released we all instantly knew and understood what it was about whereas today's reactors most of the time think she is talking about her boyfriend being her "Baby". Marissa actually got it though. 😉
lol!!! I know! To me, it's so obvious she is talking about a baby! You are right, every reaction video to this, no one gets it. They think they are talking about the boyfriend. And even this guy talked the girl into thinking she was wrong and she was dead on! Well, at least they appreciate the song. :)
Madonna when I saw her on her latest tour sung a snippet of this song after talking about a woman's right to choose. She even switched it up a bit and changed the lyric to, "I'm not keeping my baby."
If you like story lines you would love Bad Girl. It’s like a mini movie and co-stars Christopher Walken and directed by David Fincher.
As most comments say it’s about teenage pregnancy lol I can’t wait for reactions to her tours ! She’s the best live on stage .
She’s referring to teenage pregnancy which at the time this song came out, teen pregnancy was a taboo topic to discuss. However, everyone’s interpretation of the song is valid and wonderful how you viewed the song.
*i will just never understand how your generation cant pick up on such obvi clues. this couldnt be more clear if you listen to the lyrics. i get you werent alive when the whole controversy from the song/video occurred, but jeez louise it just blows my mind that people cant pick up the obvi!*
*BUT your Madonna reactions are great!*
@@Nature-Remedies23 *taught
Lol she is talking about pregnancy as a teen, at least one of you got the actual message of the song 😉
Marissa is very smart
Why do people in the comments have to be so negative?? I think it's cool that young ones are taking the time to experience Madonna in the first place. Besides, they DID talk about the pregnancy theme, so what are u whining about? I was 5 when it came out, and I interpreted "baby" as lover...I didn't even question it for YEARS! The lyrics are cleverly written so that both interpretations are possible. It's not like she says "Papa don't preach, I got knocked up!" Besides, not many words rhyme with "abortion" ...
My point is, lighten the hell up, and let these kids enjoy their deep dive without mocking them for "missing" the themes on their first listen. It just makes you look old, grumpy and miserable. Geez
💯 agreed. I hate it when these fans get bitchy and rude and then wonder why people don’t want to acknowledge her as an icon. These kids are having discourse about her to dissect what they’ve just heard, they’re not going to get it right every time, especially if they’re reacting without background research first but that’s fine they’re experiencing the way we would have as kids, that’s part of the fun of pop music dissecting meaning in the songs through discussion.
I like your point.Let's not be so demanding After all, they still walk through the carefree age of their precious youth.
Its true that some fans are being rude, but most of them are just saying what the song is about.
Yes she likes to push buttons. She doesn’t shy away from taboo topics. Even after all these years.
she is singing about teen pregnancy. when she says baby, she means a baby and not her boyfriend. Love your reactions!
Overall it's about growing up and taking responsibilty as an adult/parent but also letting go when your child becomes an adult. Her father protected her but now what he may think is protecting her would not protect her child.
When this came out I had to explain to my sister-in-law what it actually was about so nothing changed actually people hear what they want
"But my friends keep telling me to give it up. Saying I'm too young I ought to live it up."
Hee friends are telling her to get an abortion or telling her to give her baby up for adoption. Either way it's a pro choice song and the character in the video and song made her choice. She's keeping her baby.
She was young. Early 20s. Younger than Airiana Grande and young artists now. The song was huge. It was everywhere. And it was in the time when music industry churned huge stars like Whitney, Prince, Janet and Michael and George Michael.
Actually, she was 28 when this was released in 1986.
it WAS about pregnancy. i always thought it was obvious lol
Bad Girl video is one of most beautiful and the best Madonna's videos. Please react
It's a multi layered song: 'Papa' refers to the father and also The Pope, (in terms of preaching about abortion, which is a woman's decision, not for the church to dictate). As Marissa said, 'baby' refers to both the pregnancy and the boyfriend. Clever eh? 😃
You 're right girl...she was really talking about having a baby at a very Young age...and How the father figure is important to suport. Só, "PAPA, DONT PREACH"...
...
Its a major subject (abortion/ pregnancy).
...
The song is about teenage pregnancy
I know a lot of times we Madonna fans are quick to point out that many of her songs are meant to be ironic or metaphoric or have dual interpretations.
But this isn't one of those songs lol. The girl in the story is pregnant.
It can very easily be interpreted as talking about a lover. Nothing in the lyrics overtly references pregnancy
@@lutalice I was in my teens when this came out.I had to be told what was all about.First time listening i thought it was about a loveaffair.
"But my friends keep telling me to give it up. Saying I'm too you I ought to live it up."
It's talking about giving up her baby.. And obviously at the end she is telling her father she's pregnant.
@@JB-pl1iu yes but it could also be interpreted as being too young to get married and start a family in general
@@lutalice And that's why she is in an "awful mess", "in trouble deep" and "loosing sleep", because she just wants to marry a guy?
this is about teenage pregnancy
its about abortion folks.
