If you find you can't go longer than 5 minutes ever, then maybe you need to reevaluate and decide if you really want the goal you have set for yourself and if that action you cannot stay on for longer than 5 minutes is a necessary step for achieving that goal. You also need to be sure you actually have the skills to execute on that task. If your goal is the problem, change it. If you find that step is not necessary for your goal, eliminate it. If you don't have the skill and you are not enthusiastic about learning it, get assistance from someone who does while you focus on the things you have the ability to execute on.

When I'm anxious and stressed it seems more difficult to carry out the simplest activity. Sometimes I get addicted to scrolling down my youtube feed or any other social media (especially when I don't sleep well at night) and my attention span decreases substantially, so when it happens procrastinating is almost inevitable because my brain only wants little effort and lots of dopamine.
It goes in a vicious cycle because anxiety and depression are big stress culprits. ... Anxious/stressed/depressed = procrastinate; procrastinate = stressed/depressed/anxious
Despite many references on the Internet to Lincoln saying this quote, there is no evidence to support it. Within The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, he says the phrase “things may” only three times, and never says “things may come,” “things left,” or the word “hustle.”

"You're not a procrastinator, you have a HABIT of procrastinating." I couldn't agree more. Right after I joined the army's, I struggled in the beginning because of this terrible habit. But in two weeks, as I kept going through the days, I was broken and I've never felt so good about myself.
You've heard people say, "just do it." It sounds motivational and punchy but oftentimes isn't effective. (If I could *just do it*, I would just do it!) A better slogan for procrastinators is "just start." Of all the things I've read and watched about procrastination, that seems to be the best advice. Any action is better than none at all.

I work on pomodoro periods of 25 minutes. Sometimes I find it very hard to start, so I split the first pomodoro in 10min work, 5min rest, 15min work. After that it's a lot easier to keep going with the 25min intervals. The idea of just getting started even for a short period really helps.
In my case, I usually take a cold shower. And during the process it causes very quick heart racing. So the idea is basically to overcome with my procrastination and take myself into action.
Just got diagnosed at 25, got called lazy my whole life. Turns out I had rampant adhd that went unnoticed because I have the inattentive (inward) projection and I’m an introvert. So I can focus really well in social settings like the classroom and library(because I don’t feel like everyone’s eyes are bearing down on me like I do at places like the grocery store) but I sit down to study at home and it quite literally takes me 2-3 hours to get into a “zone” where I don’t have to reread everything multiple times because I space out constantly and end up passively reading and don’t notice. Though there was a bit of laziness when I was a kid😂
Understanding and realising that you're doing it is a big step I've had chores piling up for about a year that I keep putting off and realised they're not going to fix themselves
Huge respect for Mel... your last video on procrastination was also excellent. I also continue having amazing results with the Procrastination Elimination Method by John Isaac. Worth trying.

Thanksgiving break started and we’re off for a week and I have a lot of homework. Instead of procrastinating and doing it for 5 hours straight on Sunday night like usual I’ve been splitting it up daily. I feel so much more relaxed and stress free knowing that I won’t have to eventually deal with a pile of work at the end of break.
Thank you. Wow! So simple. Thank you also for removing the shame associated with procrastinating. I have a habit of procrastinating. Habits can be changed!
Perfect timing as always! Here I was sitting and not starting to learn for my next exam in a few days, always reading or watching sth. else than learning, because I'm so stressed about it and want sth. relaxing.
Thank you so much Mel! Every one of your videos is such a powerful concept. Your videos are like talking to that one best friend you have that no matter what tells you the absolute truth and so refreshing. I am so glad that I found your Channel
Every word you said is 100% true for me. I needed to hear someone say it. Thank you, and thank you for the roadmap to breaking the procrastination habit!
This makes sense. Note to self : Don’t chicken out. Stress is the trigger. Don’t avoid doing something. You are never going to be stress relief in life.
I was a really bad procrastinator because I loved the stress I work my best under pressure and I always got my work done some how. But I came up with a really simple plan that works every time; I would get a piece of paper(not connected to notebooks) I would write 5-10 tasks I wanted to do in a day. Once I completed a task I scribbled it out(very satisfying) once I got those tasks done I would throw the paper away. It is always satisfying to cross out finished work and once it is done throwing it away is that weight being lifted off your shoulders.constantly crossing off your tasks gives you that motivation to move on to the next and next until the paper is gone! If you ca only do 2 tasks in a day you write 2 tasks down and do them. All of these people over complicate it, the simpler the method the more likely you do it.
This video has resonated with me so much, I have tried so many different things to stop procrastinating and nothing seems to work because everything stems from the huge amounts of stress I feel in my life most of the time so I´m actually gonna try her plan and I hope to God it works.
thank you, Mel! you are the only one that actually talks about procrastination being a coping mechanism for stress relief... it makes such a big difference in my opinion to know this and it is just so true!!! XX
I will stop procrastinating, first thing tomorrow. In realty though I am bad at this. The longer I put off doing something, the bigger it seems to get. A 20 minute task, put off for weeks, begins to snowball into this huge task in my mind. Add in some current tasks that need done and it gets harder. Then I find when I do it, how damn simple, or less time consuming it ever was. Finally, I make real sure I congratulate myself. It really is an accomplishment in my mind.
Crazy thing is, I already knew all that, from trial and error of past procrastinations. Start out by doing something for 5 minutes, and you'd simply keep on doing that. The hard part is to actually START that 5 minutes, but usually doing something small at first gives you the push to start it.

Then I procrastinate even more and cry myself to sleep. Then the cycle repeats and I cry even more and want to die lol. Love school sm
I already suspected that my procrastination tendencies have something to do with my stress levels, it's just nice to have it confirmed by someone who knows what they're talking about : P
I'm one of the 20 percent. I don't go on after 5 min, heck sometimes I don't even finish the 5 min of work. Then, when I'm procrastinating I don't stop cause I know I won't even do it for 5 min even if I try to break the habit.

Thank you so much for sharing this. When I read about this in the 5 Second Rule, it was eye opening. It helped me so much to overcome my habit of procrastination, because I finally figured out the actual problem. Now I get so much more done. Really, thank you.
No wonder I don't feel stressed out about anything. Thank you. I have been playing that video game instead of doing work to do what I really need to improve in something else. I literally feel so much better after watching this video. I feel incredibly empowered. Thanks.
I find her advise to be beneficial and works for me but in the beginning it was still hard as I still get distracted by social media and UA-cam. The challenge was putting in excruciating effort to resist those temptations to make the 5 second decision. So, I decided to get the Freedom app that blocks out those distractions at certain times where I start my tasks. Once the temptations were no longer options, it’s much easier to make your decision.
Procrastination is one of the most useful skills I have. When I do things prematurely, I usually get punished for it. If I delay starting things, I'm rewarded. I'm a computer programmer. People don't know what they want, but they ask for things, anyway, and they often change their minds. By procrastinating, I avoid spending time working on things that people don't really want. Procrastination often opens up opportunities that I would not have had if I hadn't procrastinated. Procrastination makes my life better.
I think you mean you don’t have any external stress like financial issues. That’s fine, because you do have stress, and that is when you think about sitting down and actually doing your work. You think that it will not be a pleasant experience when you study or do whatever, so naturally, you choose to avoid it. That is a form of stress
Usually my laziness means I’m uninspired. But I just listened to a Michael Sealy hypnosis on procrastination the other day. Lasting effects so far. It didn’t make sense while I was listening that it would change anything, but there were some subconscious triggers that changed the course of the rest of the day and on into my next workday. So productive, I was wondering where I’ve been all my life. I am becoming the person I need to be for myself. ✨💖✨
I can identify with that - I am retired and still put off everything I can. Used to have a saying back in the day, ' Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow , because by tomorrow the bastards will have changed their minds'
@• ᴗ Wow, the ADHD symptom is really describing me, I also tend to say to myself that i'm a piece of shit for only being able to aknowleg my issues and being lazy about it to counter them..
Even though you aren't currently stressed, you're actually avoiding _anticipated_ stress. For example, I feel perfectly fine just lying here, and I don't feel any stress because I'm at ease. However, when I think about getting up and doing a chore that needs to be done,, I can tell that my chain of thinking points to the expected stress from having to get up and do something that I don't want to do. In other words, the thought of having to get up out of this comfortable bed to do something that I don't feel like doing, brings forth the idea of a type of strain. So to avoid that *anticipated* strain (i.e., "stress"), I feel compelled to stay where I am. You and I are not really lazy. And don't let anyone make you think you have some sort of sickness, either. It's just a habit of putting off the anticipated strain or stress that we _believe_ we're going to experience if we get up and do what we don't currently feel like doing. *Since we now have that figured out, it's time to rise above it by changing our beliefs, perceptions, and expectations, so that we can move on to greater heights!*
I was smiling so much when she told me the trick to do it. IDK why I did it but maybe it was because she said she will use the word SCIENCE which I totally believe in (and who does not) and I started to believe that I am gonna make my self better. So, what I am gonna do now is stop writing this and do the trich which she shared with me. And you should do the same ok
I've always suffered from procrastination and it has always been a major habit that is very hard to break for me. For me, it mostly stems from not having the desire and not being in the zone to do any work as the thought of doing what I need to do would be exhausting and off-putting. Thanks so much for this valuable information. I will work hard to apply the steps to breaking this habit and all other habits that I have.
I have found that just forcing yourself to start, and just work for 5 or 10 minutes, like she says, does absolute wonders. I'll be dreading a task (folding laundry), but if I just fold for 10 minutes, knowing I can quit in 10 minutes, I will usually just finish it. Or say I do quit after 10 minutes, I feel like I've accomplished something and am more likely to come back later and do another 10 minutes, until it's finished.
I have been trying for years to break my procrastination habit but until now I didn’t have a job I felt so strong about that I’d move mountains looking for a solution. I have one now and am feeling like it’s slipping through my fingers, really don’t want to screw this chance up too. So here it goes, starting exactly now (not tomorrow morning) I’m applying it. If it works I may tatoo the bloody steps on my arm 😂 Wish me perseverance. Edit: It worked! for a day... then I couldn't remember the magic formula anymore :)) should have tattooed it indeed. Back to this video, let's try again. If I never edit it again it probably means I'm not procrastinating by looking for anti-procrastinations videos anymore.
thank you so much I almost wasted my 4 years because of procrastination loop, and then beating myself for wasting time, I am still recovering from this habit but things getting better because of will power
I heard one quote that drives me to get me started: "Everything that can be done, is worth doing it bad than not doing it at all." That gets me going. I know if I don't do it bad, I won't do it at all. But if you allow it to be bad and you just start, then eventually you'll do it actually really good because you happen to be a perfectionist.
Beautifully stated, Mel Robbins. It's always stress that freezes--waiting for stress to go away is foolish. It's so true that once you bring yourself to get going, you don't want to stop.
I knew it was a habit, that seemed pretty obvious from my patterns, but I never connected it with stress relief/avoidance. That's a very helpful way to look at it.

i think procrastination is a form of stress.we don’t wanna start to the things because we think if we jump out from our comfort zone bad things will happen and we will be stressed more. but you have to remember that there’s no 1 human being who doesn’t have stress in her/his life. and don’t forget, good things take effort, tears and time. ~beauty is pain~ JUST LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND BE PROUD OF YOURSELF AFTER THAT!!
As a person who has used consciousness and meditation a lot over the years, I have given this same advice to recently to people with depression, laziness or sadness. Just for 15 seconds you gotta pretend that you are alright, snap out of it and do something happy or productive. 15 seconds is not much. Afterwards you can do back to being unhappy. But once you do it, there's a pattern break and you will be surprised at what you are capable of and what's possible.
You are so so Correct Mel. First time I understood why I was procastinating. I was so stressful about everything that was going on and i just wanted to relax and forget and relax and time passed by and boom it was too late. .

If you find you can't go longer than 5 minutes ever, then maybe you need to reevaluate and decide if you really want the goal you have set for yourself and if that action you cannot stay on for longer than 5 minutes is a necessary step for achieving that goal.
"Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."
~ Abraham Lincon
Despite many references on the Internet to Lincoln saying this quote, there is no evidence to support it. Within The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, he says the phrase “things may” only three times, and never says “things may come,” “things left,” or the word “hustle.”

Yes, I procrastinate on calling people that I really need to call. It's my anxiety and having to talk to the person and sound professional or sound like I know what I am talking about.
I feel that.
1. Procrastination is a mechanism stress relief
2. It is a habit
3. Every habit has trigger, pattern, reward
4. The only way to break a habit is to never deal with trigger, but break the pattern
5. Next time you procrastinate, remind yourself you are stressed, count down 5 4 3 2 1 and work just for 5 minutes.
6. If you work just for 5 minutes, for 80% of people they will continue working.
7. Breaker of chains, YOU

Skip to 3 minutes:
1) acknowledge the stress that you feel when you think of doing the think you're avoiding.
2) count 5 4 3 2 1 so you'll activate your prefrontal cortex.
3) interrupt the procrastination habit by starting the stuff you are avoiding. If you just start, 80% of people will continue it doing it.

Love the distinction between identity and behavior. It's truly the core of personal growth altogether.

Guess what was in my watch later since 2018?😂
I work on pomodoro periods of 25 minutes.
Sometimes I find it very hard to start, so I split the first pomodoro in 10min work, 5min rest, 15min work.
After that it's a lot easier to keep going with the 25min intervals. The idea of just getting started even for a short period really helps.
I had to do that too. I thought i was the only one.
I think I'll try this. Starting with 10minutes.
Thx for the useful tip. I'll share it with my village, and they'll thank you too.
wow i love the idea!! thank u very muchh!!
In my case, I usually take a cold shower. And during the process it causes very quick heart racing. So the idea is basically to overcome with my procrastination and take myself into action.

Yeah I'm wondering if this technique works for people with ADHD... 😰
Oh that's hard.. I also can't pay attention and focus how do I know if I have ADHD?
@@ferris2323 oh same. I like to be distracted, like the need to see some variations, hehe... and not adhd
Understanding and realising that you're doing it is a big step I've had chores piling up for about a year that I keep putting off and realised they're not going to fix themselves

1) Acknowledge the stress.
2) Count: 54321
3) Interrupt the Procrastination Habit
4) Just do 1 thing
5) Work for 5 minutes

Seems like a good habit 👍🏼
So how is going? Did you stop procrastinate?
I love how this video go straight on the problem ;) Thank you Mel for sharing such useful and simple steps
This is probably the best video about breaking 'the habit of procrastination'. Will try. Thank you so much.
Crazy thing is, I already knew all that, from trial and error of past procrastinations.
Start out by doing something for 5 minutes, and you'd simply keep on doing that.
The hard part is to actually START that 5 minutes, but usually doing something small at first gives you the push to start it.
If you want to procrastinate less and concentrate better on studying you can study with me here.
Instead of watching videos on youtube you can have a video of me studying and keeping you company, so you don't get distracted.

“Procrastination is attitude's natural assassin. There's nothing so fatiguing as an uncompleted task.”

It worked. I acknowledged the stress, interrupted the habit, and did one first thing.. And.. boy I completed the project! Thank you :)
😂😂 you are in the wrong comment section... everyone here sees it as an issue
but i’m procrastinating for no reason right now. like i literally don’t have any stress. i guess i’m just really lazy
It makes so much sense... Thanks for breaking it down
Amazing I tried many things but this 10-9-8 counting helped me alot❤️

I heard one quote that drives me to get me started: "Everything that can be done, is worth doing it bad than not doing it at all."
That gets me going. I know if I don't do it bad, I won't do it at all. But if you allow it to be bad and you just start, then eventually you'll do it actually really good because you happen to be a perfectionist.
Thanks Mel. Your 5,4,3,2,1 technique works 90% of the time.
Beautifully stated, Mel Robbins. It's always stress that freezes--waiting for stress to go away is foolish. It's so true that once you bring yourself to get going, you don't want to stop.

Thank you so much. I didn't realize that stress was triggering my procrastinating habit all along. You have really helped me.
It's challenging when you also deal with indecisiveness.

~beauty is pain~
JUST LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND BE PROUD OF YOURSELF AFTER THAT!!
this was so refreshing and different
What a superb speaker.....easy on the eye too😃
As a person who has used consciousness and meditation a lot over the years, I have given this same advice to recently to people with depression, laziness or sadness. Just for 15 seconds you gotta pretend that you are alright, snap out of it and do something happy or productive. 15 seconds is not much. Afterwards you can do back to being unhappy. But once you do it, there's a pattern break and you will be surprised at what you are capable of and what's possible.
