I googled this and apparently you can do it in any order !! But yes, I agree that the cake goes at the bottom traditionally, especially in a Sherry trifle as you pour the alcohol onto the sponge at the bottom and it soaks in, then add fruit and jelly, but hey its 2023 ! 🙂 Looks lovely 😍
Yes you need to make some for your kids. The traditional UK version of this is to use trifle sponges which are dryer, like Italian sponge finger biscuits. We put them in the bottom of the bowl, pour small amount of sherry on top, then pour onto the sponge the cooled jelly liquid. Then allow to set, then custard, then custard, then double cream whipped, then decorate with sliced almonds and cherries. I've never seen this version of a trifle in the UK. I'm sure there are lots of versions out there. I like the use of berries. Looks really really good.
Mine version is cake at the bottom, sprinkled with some fruit juice to soften it,then comes a layer of mixed fresh fruits( I prefer tinned) and dried fruits, followed by a layer of custard and then the top layer of jelly as decoration, sometimes with whipped cream, mostly without it. It is a rich dessert, no doubts. I like it.
@@FoodwithChetna ua-cam.com/video/WY4CfQvwlyg/v-deo.htmlsi=txLbFFDD-B5Y_o8L iam sure you will enjoy making this original recipe. Of course you can replace alcohol or eggs with pre-made custard to your liking.
This was a huge hit on Christmas Day! Thank you for another delicious recipe Chetna! I’m afraid this will be my go-to dessert from now on as it was such a crowd pleaser
That looks absolutely wonderful. Obvs, sherry isn't good for the children but for adults, how much and at what stage should (dry) sherry be added in? Many thanks.
I wouldn't use a dry sherry for this! This is the moment for a sweet sherry - Oloroso at least! Sprinkle it on the cake before the custard, if you are layering it like this.
Hi Chetna that looks the most best masterclass trifle ever ❤ I love eating trifle, it's my favourite dessert too 😋❤️😍 thank you so much for sharing this delicious amazing masterclass dessert recipe 😋❤️😍 hopefully I can't wait to give this a try 😁🥰❤ thank you so much again ❤
As someone brought up in the UK and with a trifle-making mother, I am traumatised by not seeing the cake on the bottom and with some kind of booze soaked into it (usually sherry). Just kidding! Feel like making this now.
This may be a dumb question but I feel like it's worth asking LOL what do I cover it with because I don't want to travel with it uncovered. I'm going to make my mom one for a desert for this Saturday just to see if it's something she'd like me to bring to dinner. I cannot walk into her house with it uncovered she would kill me😂😂😂
You can cover the bowl with an aluminum sheet foil or cling wrap. Just remember not to rest any other items on top of it while transporting 😀. Just leave a little gap on top when you lay out the cream or else some of the cream will stick to the foil/cling wrap.
@@FoodwithChetna I took a Chopstick and went across lightly and made a design on top that way the cling wrap didn't touch it. It was a definite hit! And not as sweet as I assumed it would be thanks a lot for sharing!
Of all the shortcuts, I would definitely just use ready made jelly and make the custard from scratch, rather than the other way round. Ready made custard is not nice.
for the real trifle taste you really need the ready custard. I love homemade custard for all things but for this trifle ready made custard is a must! 😍
This is the first time I have ever seen the cake on top of the jelly, it’s normally placed in the jelly before it sets. Interesting 🧐

My beloved mom made it like that with sponge biscuits on the bottom then sherry or liquire
My favorite! Thank you, Chetna!

I’m adding trifle to our Christmas menu this year, I’ve not had trifle in years.
Awesome🎉❤
thanks
Too good 👍

Oh my that looks so delicious! Living in Canada and we can’t readily get Madeira cake. What substitute can I use?
More like pound cake, I think?
Yummy 😋- i love your dress where is from Chetna?
Hi Chetna, was the geletine that you used a vegetarian/vegan one?
no
2:16 What would be the equivalent of gelatine sheets to powdered gelatine?
Agar is a vegetarian substitute for gelatin
Pretty sure that wasn't the question.@@meghachopra86
@@olafbigandglad oh! Yes, just read the question again. My bad 😊
@meghachopra86 thanks for the suggestion. I totally forgot about agar agar powder for vegetarians 😊
Google gave
"Replacing gelatine powder with leaves? As a guide, two gelatin leaves will replace 1 tsp gelatin powder in a recipe."

Good idea to do it in stages so it sets. Usual mistake is not giving enough time to set the jelly.

if you dont fill it to the top then you can cover with anything......

It's not a 70s trifle if it doesn't have RAINBOW SPRINKLES on it!
haha not a fan of those
Ohhhhh my goodness me… took me straight back to 70’s… nostalgic…. memories.. ohhhh i’ve gone all emotional now
