Ey I can play trombone. You might wanna try making it with smaller diameter pipe, and I would look up the length of pipe in a normal trombone. I'm normally a tuba player so I know that my tuba has like 18 feet of tubing. I bet if you made it more specific you could make it really good. My friend has a plastic trombone and he loves it.
Unfortunately this is the smallest size of PVC that will fit together properly - but I did hear about the plastic trombones! Maren said that ya have to break them in?
As a brass player who has played pvc pipes before, I suspect the tone of the instrument would increase a lot if you put a proper mouthpiece in there. Mouthpieces make a huge difference in sound, and jagged piping does not a good mouthpiece make.
I think a cool feature would be to add a mouth piece that starts off as a semi-circle then a short tube like those seen on actual trombones, don't know if they sell them at home depot though.
"Answers will be upside down" Me who can read upside down without flipping my phone or my head: do you really think you are incharge here? Edit: thanks guys I never reached this many like before🙂
The reason instruments use brass is because it has this cool property that allows two pieces of tubing to slide inside one another without loosing air pressure or pulling more air in. This is also why its useful in modifying nerf guns
as a trombone player i think the key to making this sound good is realizing that the bore is huge and so this is gonna have less resistance than even a tuba, it will resonate on really low notes, and it will sound more like a digeridoo
It would probably sound a little better with thinner pipes and a smaller mouthpiece. Other than that, the fact that it can actually play distinct notes is amazing.
Literally, the onoy problem i can see, is that you used pretty big pvc. Smaller diameter ones would probably give an even better result. But impressive,n
The thesis idea is sound: one can build a working brass instrument out of nonbrass materials. I am collecting ideas like these so I can sponsor my own orchestra at the moment...

Two years ago you made this video, but I only found your channel today. Anyway, checked the comments and nobody mentioned it. 4:19 - The correct answer is "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss.... The tune was also used in Space Odyssey, and that could be done, since the tune is in the public domain now. Sorry, since I like classical music, I guess I'm a bit more punctual on that one, especially since a lot of people do not even believe when I say that is a classical piece written by one of the three Strausses.
i made one with Copper Pipes from a Plumbing store lol. it sounds surprisingly good! sadly, i sold it to a man that came through that heard me play on it, and he told me he had never heard such a clean tone from a trombone before, and i just said "it isnt actually a trombone tho. it's a Toilet Trumpet at best" and he looked as cloes to a human questionmark as humanly possible lmfao! he bought it for 2000 NOK (Norwegian Crowns) which honestly surprised me so much i genuinely passed out from shock. but yeah, it is possible to build one from Copper Plumbing pipes haha.
Honestly, if all the pipes were slightly smaller diameter, especially the mouthpiece bit, it might actually sound like a cheap trombone, rather than just a fun experiment.
