  • Amazon parrots are unique in their own way.
    They offer the most and least at the same time-
    on the one hand, they are loyal, dedicated companions. On the other hand, they are loud, really loud.
    They are one-person parrots, but If you can get past their noise level and if you are the person they choose, you are in for a treat!
    Amazon parrots are going to become harder to come by, especially rare species.

    My Amazon joined my family as a rescue when I was 5. He turned aggressive to my parents but bonded to me, ever since I was young. I wasn’t allowed to handle him until I got older and then I learned he would never bite me. Now, I’m an adult and take him out daily. He knows colors and can pick a colored object on command, or the next color in a pattern. I think he understands a lot of English vocabulary, though he’s not very talkative. We thing he’s 30-40 or more years old now. I hope he lives for a lot longer.

    I have an amazon about a year and a half now, he literally flew into my house and just stared at me😂. Never thought I'd love and cherish a parrot this much, even if she hears my voice and she isn't able to see me she gets very loud and excited. Luckily enough i got her just after my grandmother died and she has been bringing joy to me ever since. I watch videos every day to try to better understand her nd give her the love she deserves❤

    I have a very large beautiful male yellow nape named Cricket. I have had him for 27 years (he is 28) and I got him from a sanctuary where he'd been placed after being abused. I think HR is the perfect parrot, but it took a lot of time and work to gain his trust, and he still barely tolerates men.
    He is relatively quiet, and sing and talks and doesn't scream except rarely and only if he senses danger like a hawk or helicopter or cat.and is incredibly loving in his way and extremely affectionate. I am disabled an have several chronic illnesses including brittle diabetes, and he learned very early to alert me to low blood sugar emergencies by rubbing vigorously on my cheek and saying "it's OK!" "You alright?" and not stopping until I ate or drank (of course he got jackpot treats!). If it was late or bedtime he would often not go in his cage, but run to the bedroom and station himself on the headboard of the bed and would want to watch me all night. Getting him in his cage was hard on those nights! I live in NYC and he is a fixture in the neighborhood, If he isn't seen for a few days during good weather, people come and ask about him. He constantly flirts with the neighborhood women calling them to. "come see the birdie", and telling them that they're beautiful. His only flaw is that he's messy,but I wouldn't change a thing about him. He is a true blessing in my life, and he also brings smiles to almost everyone who sees him!

    I work in a petshop and we get people abandoning pets more then you would know. A little over a year ago we got an amazon this way, the original owner didnt have the time to take him out of his cage for health reasons. Never had a bird before or wanted one, always saw them as unpredictable. He was biting most people, he was fine with me. Was always the ''get to work early type'' so after a couple weeks founded out he sings to symphonic metal when he was out and listening to music with me. He stole my heart and i got him home, its crazy how much they give to you, its a commitment, but it is so worth it. We have been together since and its great, he is well known in the neighborhood as we take walks morning and evening when the temperature allows it (Canada). His name is Picchu or ''Sir what are you doing'' when he is causing mayhem. He is around 5 years old (i dont have paper on him)
    My cat is still not super ok with him yet but we are working on it.

    Not loud at all, but screams in his cage sometimes in the morning because he wants more SLEEP. I cover him, and he’s fine. He gets a lot of out of cage time.

    We’re trying to let him out of the cage more often since we heard it wasn’t good for him to be there all the time.
    If you don’t mind answering, how do you get them to stop pecking to the point that they will rest on your shoulder? Also, how do you keep your cats from trying to hunt them (they’ve been trying to swat at him)?

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Місяць тому +2

      I don't understand your first question, pecking?
      My Amazon stands up to the cat when I'm with them both. Otherwise, the cat's no allowed around the birds. I have found that someone always gets hurt sooner or later. If you can, try to teach the cat to be afraid of the bird by defending the bird, standing up to the cat and making loud and annoying moves and sounds. Your bird might learn to copy you with the cat when needed.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  4 місяці тому +1

      I'm glad you are looking to correct this for them.
      If they are accustomed to human food, try giving them scrambled eggs. Unfortunately, when Amazons are overweight, they are more prone to developing FLD (fatty liver disease), so it's good to improve/correct their diet.
      They will be stubborn and not eat pellets and maybe the eggs too. You have to be more stubborn than them. Keep at it. Always make pellets available. I've been told that millet is used to help parrots reduce weight (I've never had to get a parrot to lose weight, so I can't say, but this is what an expert told me).
      Like a child that has been given too much candy for too long, they will be stubborn, like I said. However, when they are hungry, they will eat. Be persistant. Have carrots and millet, broccoli for snacks. Small amounts, because they will probably turn it down for a long time. My Amazon took a year to come around.
      Keep me updated!

    So i work at this bird store near me and i have worked there for almost 4 years. Almost every bird i have met has always been good with me even surprising the owners which is kind of amazing. My boss calls me the "Bird Whisperer" and almost every customer knows this and when we get new birds that are being surrendered i'm the first to try and befriend the bird. About 2 months ago a lady had called our store saying she sees a parrot in a pine tree, so of course my coworker tells me to go down and see if i can get this bird down. Of course i agreed and went down without knowing the type of bird it was. I get down to the area and there was a Yellow Naped Amazon high in this tree so im trying to figure out how to get this bird down without scaring him off. well i stood near the tree for about 30 minutes just talking to this bird when he flys down to the ground and walks over to me! I go up to the big guy and he steps up immediately and i just put him into my car with no issues. Of course me and my coworkers post this bird online to see if anyone is going to claim this beautiful bird, a couple weeks pass and no one came forward. During the time we were looking for the owner, i decided to give him a name for the moment which became Jasper. in only a couple days Jasper learned his name and became a mush with me, cuddles all the time, let me put a harness on him, eats pellets and chop with no issues. The only problem that Jasper has is he bonded to me, he tolerates 3 of my coworkers so Now its been almost 3 months and we just decided instead of finding him a new home to keep him as a mascot. Me and my boss also made a deal since im the one who found him, since i live in an apartment, when i get my own place i can take Jasper home!
    So i guess Jasper the Yellow Naped Amazon chose me as his mom! I never really had an actual opinion on amazons but ever since i met Jasper he has been such a great bird and will be a great addition to my flock!

    If you think you want a parrot be aware that they live a very long time and also need many hours of attention each day. Do your research and give a new home to a bird from a rescue centre. Do not get a bird if you are out at work all day, they do not deserve to be shut in a cage on their own. Give them love and understanding and they will return it, but by their very nature they will be getting up to mischief and needing constant attention.
    A cage should not be a prison but a sanctuary that your bird can use to sleep and feed in.

      No, not always, but they can be. It’s not uncommon- my YNA attacks peoples who get too close to she and I.

      @@ParrotBliss Of all parrot species, Amazons are the least likely to be one person birds, like African Greys are known to be one-person birds.
      You’re simply disseminating false and inaccurate information about Amazons. Totally irrelevant how your particular Amazon behaves.
      Mine loves me, my wife, and ALL women. That’s not a one-person bird.
      Perhaps you haven’t properly socialized your birds, and think it’s “cute” and special to consider them one-person birds, bonded only to you.

      @@Ira88881 so true, I adopted my Amazon as an adult and she was like this. I don’t like to contradict people, but it is common knowledge that Amazons can be this way. I’m so glad that yours isn’t like that- and I wish it wasn’t true. However, experts like avian vets or people who have worked with parrots for decades say the same thing. My Amazon that I raised as a baby isn’t like this, but I was able to socialize him, wasn’t able with my rescues. I’ve also had people tell me that they have had the same experience with their Amazon.

      My grandmas Amazon is very social with many family members. She went through a period she only wanted my grandmother. She still continued to talk to us and get happy. I have now inherited her. My grandmother went to heaven. She loves me and kisses me. She hated my sister for 25 years. As my sister used to shake her cage when she was a baby. She recently forgave her. It’s super cute to watch them bond.

      I totally disagree. A “long-winded” response from somebody with experience is exactly what you want to hear to get good insight.
