      The chocolate banana was two things: first, it was a meaningful gesture of gratitude to Uncle Jimmy who has done so much for Richie. Second, it was a way for Richie to show that he was listening to the conversation 5 years ago at Christmas dinner between Jimmy and Tiff, even when no one thought he was.

    Crazy how the mom was outside in the COLD , and didn’t want to come inside and Camry was stuck inside a fridge , also in the COLD , and missing in action, it’s a parallel of their personalities , especially when Camry explodes and thinks he doesn’t deserve to feel good , same with his mom

      Also I loved how Donna when she decided to turn around and walk away all the traffic lights (robots where I’m from) we’re RED and the sign read something like “no turning when the lights are red” or something like that
      And I just felt like it was symbolism for how this is it like she’s not going to turn around for her kids it might be like the final nail in the coffin for their relationship and Pete saw that too

      I think that may have been the most important conversation in the whole season. No one would have been able to show Carmy the similarities he has with his mother other than Richie and not with hate but with love as he kept saying over and over. And when Richie finally got sick of it was like "You need ME!" it was such a cathartic moment. Because Carmy DOES need him. When Richie is calm and focused he can literally take on anything. Richie's growth was a joy to behold. I hope Carmy allows himself to be happy next season whenever that comes out.

      @@marlaynaurbanski4510 Carmy needs Richie because Richie can pull Carmy out of that obsession with his work, because much like Luca, Richie doesn't want to be the best and treat everything like a competition, Richie wants to be good and he wants everyone else to be good as well. Carmy is competitive and needs to be the best, Richie is cooperative and wants everyone to win.

    also, as much as i thought that the claire plot was the weakest storyline of the season, i think you all missed what carmy was saying in the fridge. he didn’t think claire was a waste of time, he thinks his pursuit of happiness (with her) was a waste of time-hence the “i don’t need to provide amusement or enjoyment, i don’t need to receive amusement or enjoyment.” he doesn’t think he deserves it because it ended up messing things up; it’s self-flagellation.

      That line, about not needing to provide or receive, hit hard. Carmy is deeply troubled, maybe (definitely) depressed, and depression makes you believe you don't need or deserve good things and your only worth lies in what you can do: be productive, be good at something, et cetera. But Carmy doesn't do that in a healthy way like Garrett's "acts of service", he does it in a self-destructive way, because he doesn't care about himself and what happens to him as long as he goes down having "proven his worth"

    I think what's going on with Sydney MAY BE what happened with her mom: Lupus. Lupus is genetic, and one of its symptoms is memory loss. She was the one who told Carmy an episode ago that Tony was the fridge guy. And we learned when she was celebrating her mom's birthday that she is now older than her.
    She might even know it. When her dad asks her last episode "why put so much pressure on this one?" she replies, "Because I don't know if I could do another one."

    • @netherworlde
      @netherworlde 11 місяців тому +62

      @@prbrown29 Certainly, that's what I first thought of, too. But looking back at the scene, there's a lot of emphasis put on the real name of the fridge guy. Why does it matter if his name is Tony or Terry? Yet the moment was framed like a critical piece of information.
      Interestingly, Sydney 's anxiety attack only starts when she realizes she got the name wrong. She hears the whir of the ticket printer and remembers the last time they were overrun with orders...all because she forgot to close the pre-order option.
      I'm not saying she's sick for certain. I just feel like with all the information presented to us about her mom, there's more than meets the eye. This show is good at red herrings. They hid $300,000 under our noses for the entirety of season 1 after all.

    There might be a possibility of Richie saying "I love you" was a jab at carmen, pointing out that hes been so far detached that he cant say it back (in the first episode there was an awkward pause when sugar said to carmen she loved him and he retreated into the restaurant, and this was revisited in the family dinner episode when both michael and Donna were taunting him in the kitchen with. This implies that its so well known and established amongst his circle that they openly make light of it) now consider the tone Richie says it with this information in mind.

    I feel like carmi has PTSD on all the things that happened, from his mentor in culinary, his relationship with his mom. That christmas episode, I believe was a turning point of him, realizing that “ i dont deserve some good thing” that is why he is unconsciously sabotaging himself, like his relationship with claire, he unsure whether to call her girlfriend. And also the scene where he was locked up in the fridge because he forgot to call the fridge guy, like he takes actions, he doesn’t even realize that he sabotaging himself to something good, richie was the one who called him out about it, like calling him “donna” hes turning like his mom, and richie saying” why can’t you just accept something good once in your life” that made carmi even mad, because it was the truth.

    As one of the many people in the comments that's also in the restaurant industry, this is so real. When shit hits the fan, you just gotta focus on what you CAN do, and ignore the things you cannot fix in that exact moment. Carmy saying in the last ep "It's going to be overwhelming. Don't get overwhelmed" is so on point. Thankfully, I'm not BOH, but the tension in the kitchen is beyond every single night.

  • @bob-ru5ls
    @bob-ru5ls 9 місяців тому +27

    I actually see Carmy's whole story and the intention behind his relationship with Claire in a completely different way than everyone else seems to see it. In every scene that Carmy is with her it seems as if the chaotic and oppressive energy that follows him through his every day life, coming from putting every hour into getting the restaurant open on time mixed with the constant reminders of his troubled past, just fades away and for a second he can exist without the constant background anxiety looming over him. I think everyone sees getting the restaurant open as a good thing for Carmy, something that he should be putting all of his effort into without getting sidetracked, and that makes complete sense. He has a responsibility to be there for his coworkers, not to mention It was his dream to start a restaurant with his brother in the first place and he's finally following through with it. But as we can see as show progresses, The Bear ends being a positive thing for nearly everyone but him.
    If you remember, Carmy mentioned in his monologue that when he left to pursue becoming a chef, all he ever wanted was for Mike to say he was proud, and i think because of that lack of recognition he looked for approval from elsewhere, his former abusive superior being one example. His entire motivation for getting better as a chef was fueled further by the tension in his relationship with Mike, and when he lost Mike he also lost his motivation to move forward in his current position. Why continue to put yourself in a toxic environment that brings you to the point of considering letting it all to burn down, while the one thing keeping you going has disappeared? But after he comes home, the second he takes over The Beef his commitment to fixing it feels more like a way of coping with the death of his brother and ignoring his problems rather than addressing the elephant in the room. Sugar even echoes this feeling after seeing him for the first time since Mikes suicide. He continues to choose the toxic environment that he learned to endure in his rough family life, and that has become normalized for him up to this point.
    When Claire first appears she seems to bring out an unseen side of Carmy. For the first time that we've seen in the show he actually chooses to go out and do something fun like going to a party. We see him out of his usual element and he appears to really enjoy it. Claire as a character and as an idea comes across as something that truly makes him happy, a welcome change and a stark contrast to his oppressive work lifestyle. But in the end, after all he had been working up to seems to be falling apart and closing in around him, he convinces himself that his relationship and his detachment from the restaurant was the real reason why everything went wrong. He feels that he had ultimately been "distracted" by his personal life. However, after the realization that Claire had heard everything and that he might have lost her, her message from earlier telling him that she loves him knocks him back into his senses. He realizes that tragically, he may have accidentally thrown something away that actually brings him joy, for something that has brought him far more stress than anything else. All that he had suffered for possibly being for nothing.
    In my eyes Carmy's whole arc feels like a tragedy. In an effort to chase after his dream and subsequently run away from his problems, he distances himself from the people that can help and support him, sinking further into a hole he's dug for himself.
    The main problem with trying to get this point across is that even though she makes Carmy happy, a net positive in his life, she's not a particularly interesting character. We don't know anything about her as opposed to most other characters central to the show. We can't get invested in her and for that reason no one can root for their relationship, which is disappointing because it ends up feeling like by extension, no one is rooting for him.
    And as a disclaimer I'm not saying that being a chef as whole is something bad for Carmy. I think it is a passion that has brought him pride and a sense of accomplishment in his life. but cooking isn't what leads him down a hole, it's his somewhat addictive and very hectic lifestyle that leaves no room for his own needs that does.
    Anyway sorry for the poorly written essay. This is just my take on the Carmy side of the show and there's a lot more to get into with the other characters.

    i am convinced claire just served the purpose of "holding carmy down" (kinda his fault, not hers), to show the audience and ultimately to himself that he's not at the place where he can successfully balance different aspects of his life and provide joy to himself and others.
    EVERYONE progressed except him! everyone served a purpose in the opening, except for him. they actually managed to do it without him. at group therapy he mentioned how he's always waiting for the other shoe to drop and in the end it happens. if they go through season 3, carmy's gonna be at his lowest

      Others have already pointed it out, but Luca says something to Marcus in Copenhagen like about how after a certain level the best food is less about technique and more about being open "to the world, yourself, to other people". I think Claire is a plot device to show how shut down Carmy is. With the kitchen able to do a service without him, it's now on Carmy to become open for the restaurant and food to get to the next level.

    I'm not gonna touch on Carmen and Claire because I did not care lol
    Sydney is showing signs of all the shit Carmy experienced in New York that still affects him: The hearing the ticket machine even though there are no new orders being placed while Carmy saw writing on the tickets calling him all sorts of nasty things; the anxiety being dialled to 11; the throwing up after service (which he explicitly said happened to him every night).
    Sydney has started to find her professional groove, but maintenance of the standard will mess with her mentally and physically next season.
    Also, love how the two who were at each other's throats the most last season worked together to get shit done and they worked wonderfully (I mean, she stabbed him and called him a loser and he said she traded sexual favours for a good review last season)
    I think when Carmen talked about finding amusement in episode 1, it should've been a hobby or something. Instead, everyone pushes him to get into a relationship...as he's preparing to open a new restaurant and because he's 100% with everything, he can't split his attention between Claire, continuing group therapy and The Bear so you end up with him rambling without fully thinking through what he's saying (and inadvertently breaking Claire's heart), an inability to regulate his emotions so boom he blows up on Richie and him not calling Tony/Terry/Tom.

      First of all Carmy didn't just blow up on Richie because he was emotional, Richie mentioning Donna is what led to that & cousin knew exactly what button to push when he said that.
      2nd of all, Claire was being super naive. A guy gives you a fake number, you've been crushing on him since idk kindergarten and he barely even remembers your name. This is a man that was calling her a girl who is a friend and had to be bullied by everyone to finally call her his girlfriend, like????At what point does self preservation kick in for you to realize this guy is not it for you. She was borderline clingy and she needs to fix whatever it is that made her so willing to ignore literally every red flag that came her way. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see he is severely emotionally crippled & unavailable so her little broken heart is all on her. Just saying.
      3rd of all I really like your analysis of Sydney's psychosomatic reaction. I couldn't quite understand why she was projectiling all over the place, esp since from my pov she had handled the situation & run things very well.

He said “I swear to god I could smell em”. Ritchie giving him a chocolate covered banana shower that he was paying attention to his story even when though he wasn’t talking to him.

    I’ve been thinking about this as I’ve rewatched this season, yet again, but I think Sydney has Lupus like her mom. There are hints and I think reasons why she’s refusing to form meaningful relationships like with Marcus or Carmy (for y’all shippers). When she tells her dad that she “might not be able to do another one”, it felt like she was alluding to something more than just not being able to have another business venture. Of course we’ve also seen the medicine in her cabinet and how she tries to avoid talking about her mom or even Marcus’ mom, she checks in but is not super overly concerned and quickly tries to console the situation before it could get too deep. It also makes me think of probably the main reason why she would turn down Marcus, he’s losing his mother at that point in the story, Sydney has already had that happen and probably wouldn’t want to subject herself to that with someone she’s close to, as well. I think by season 4 (we know that they are writing season 3 and 4 together), we will find out that she’s sick. It’s really sad even thinking about it and I’m really hoping I’m wrong!
