Review: 2022 Subaru BRZ (Manual + Auto)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лип 2024
- I review the all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ in both manual and automatic transmissions on both the street and the track. The BRZ is one of the last true sports car you can buy new at an affordable price. With a very low center of gravity, the lightweight, rear wheel drive handling dynamics and the greatly improved straight-line performance it’s a fantastic performance car bargain with a starting price of $28,955 and it deserves to be appreciated while it’s still around. What do you think of the 2022 BRZ and do you prefer it over the Toyota GR86? Thanks to Subaru for providing me with this opportunity to review the new BRZ!

No one deserves to review the 2nd generation BRZ more than Matt Maran, the 1st generation owner! Great review overall, I liked the points you mentioned near the end about how this car compares to its FWD turbocharged competitors. Those competitors are based on a commuter car, whereas this BRZ starts on a dedicated purpose built platform. A lot of these 'mORe pOWer' whiners don't realise that adding power is easy in the aftermarket but, only an OEM manufacturer can do the lower centre of gravity, weight reduction and torsional rigidity improvements at a reasonable price. Pressed the 'like' button as you deserve more views, especially with enthusiast cars!
Thanks James! 🙏
SUBARUWRXFAN
Lower power means cheaper maintenance. Not sure how is in USA, but for us in Europe it is important cheaper registration, insurance, less emissions, fuel economy. Especially if it is your daily driver car. Hence for Mustangs (which are not really common cars here) ecoboosts are more popular here despite not much cost difference between ecoboosts and big ones like GT, as GT has exorbitant maintenance costs.
@Bryce Czirr sure, but this one is more fun to drive, then it depends of your life, for example I would be able to live off BRZ so far, in my current car only 2 times I carried more than two extra people (which can be still done in BRZ as emergency) and my groceries were never that big I required a trunk lol.
@Bryce Czirr So what if the GTI is quicker? It'll still be boring to drive and feel heavy around corners. Won't teach anything about car control with its poor weight distribution, cross balance and its centre of gravity. A BRZ with the same power as the GTI will whoop that car around the track. Don't try to claim that you're a 'Driving God' and have the entitlement to have more power, when you clearly don't. The Nissan Z will cost a lot more to own with tax, weight, fuel and wider grippier tyres, its not all better.
You’re definitely one of the most qualified person to review this car 😂
Then he leaves a heart ❤️🤣🤣🤣
If you don’t like his review, you could post your own, or at least give legitimate criticism of it instead of just throwing shade. Oh wait, you’re definitely one of the most qualified person to leave snark, so carry on
@@michaelpaver3788 jesus chill out, instead of getting triggered and typing something without critically thinking, if you knew who Matt was before you'd totally understand the original comment.
Yes cause he is "subaruwrxfan" 🤣
Crazy how the first brz was the reason I subbed to your channel. Now its come full circle lol
Matt Maran in 2012 - early adopter of the 1st gen BRZ. Matt Maran in 2021 - finally recognised by Subaru to be invited to drive the 2nd gen BRZ! I liked your commentary you made about the steering feel differences at 19:29 - from the Japanese journalist videos I saw, the japanese engineers told them that it was one of the reasons why the GR86 used the heavier steel front knuckles compared to the BRZ's more lightweight aluminium front knuckles. Those japanese journalists were lucky to drive the GR86 and BRZ back-to-back on the same day, it would've been great if you guys in US had the same treatment but oh well, glad you got to experience both cars somehow!
Matt was invited by Subaru as were many other journalists
@@GA-wq8xq You think I don't know that already?I never said he was the only one invited. I'm saying that his channel took off when he did those BRZ update videos back in 2013 🙄
I would like to see Matt Maran do a review on the 2022 wrx I don’t know what to think of it.
Any link to those review?
@@ruturaj47 Go to his channel page and search from there. I'm not going to do all the work for you.
Okay I'll never understand why car companies will call the base model "premium" and the top model "limited" It drives me nuts.
From a marketing standpoint it sounds more upscale. "I have the base model." "I have the premium model."
Thats just subaru lol
I think it’s even more odd how “sport” is often the base model with a lot of brands. Or how for example dodge uses “GT” as basically a visual package for their v6 charger and challenger while for example a mustang “GT” is a v8.
Used to be the base was called "custom" I prefer Nissan method. Base enthusiast track and gt
@@jeffthedream on the f150 the limited is nicer than the platinum lol Ford makes it confusing also
At 15:35 Matt goes back to his roots!! Congratulations on your success and family.
Thank you!
You should've said Subaru WRX fan just for old times sake 😂
Yessssssssss
used to watch this guy years ago before changing his name his videos just never gets old keep it going!
I'm seriously considering getting one of these twins. Thanks for the back to back (as much as you can) reviews!
Great review. I look for attention to detail in car design, and it's great to see the BRZ through Matt's experience with the old car.
Perfect review! The updates definitely make the BRZ more desirable🤘😎
With how detailed the BRZ looks, It looks like car that would be so fun to both detail and seal/ protect the paint work and trim.
Really happy they recognized that you need to review this car. 👍
Love to see your back in a brz matt!
Matt back in a BRZ again! Nice!!!!
Adding this to my list for 3 season sports car. Good review
I've always kind of liked these cars. Very good review Matt.
What a great review
Your first review of your 2012 BRZ was the first review I had seen of any BRZ five years later in 2017 I was finally able to get a used 2015 and loved it. Just last year I stepped it up and got a 2018 BRZ tS. Being that I personally think I like the styling of the 1st gen refresh, and more importantly I have a Special trim I don't plan on getting a 2nd gen anytime soon but I'm still glad to see you reviewing one!
I love the fact that you explained why a car on a dedicated platform is better then a souped up economy car, I've only heard you and savagegeese talk about that, but you actually explained it fully which is even better!
Thanks Dallas!
Really excited for this to hit the dealers. I'm more of a fan of the GR86 styling, as it feels more aggressive, but great review.
Also, it was a pleasure seeing you and ringing you up at PetSmart a few weeks ago.
Thanks, it was great to meet you too!
I followed u when your channel was named subaruwrxfans.
I still remember that I watched your review for evo x many times over and finally decided to buy one in 2017.
I have been driving the evo x since then, but now I'm into the gr86 or this brz here.
I'm gald that I found your video again, thanks
Great review as usual. Honest and realistic. I'm glad you mentioned people subscribing. Hope you continue to tell people if they like it they should subscribe. I think it does actually help
Thanks Joshua! Subscribing still does help, but these days the UA-cam algorithm mostly cares about how long people watch the video for and how often they click that channel's videos when they pop up in the recommendations. Watching till the end and clicking on the recommendations are the best ways to help currently!
Awesome review Matt! You're the perfect person to review this car since you were a owner of the 1st gen BRZ!
Thanks man! It was fun to be back in a BRZ!
Good video Matt! Looks like you were having fun pushing this car in the track…very jelly!
Hi Matt! I love your review on the new BRZ! While it is a bummer that it does not have a twisting key anymore, I am super happy with the improvements that they made! I also loved how you threw it back to the subaruwrxfan days, to when a lot of us started. Please keep up the good work, and I am really happy for your success! God Bless always and please stay safe! :)
Thanks man!
Pressed the like button and commenting here to help with the algorithm! When it comes to these low production/profit cars like the BRZ/MX-5, I think its important and great that video creators like yourself highlight why this car exists (when people will complain that their minivan is quicker). You mention in your weekly news updates that manufacturers will stop offering manual cars or stop developing these types of niche sportscars, if all people do is buying them used with 40% depreciation. I hope your video gets shared so that it encourages more people to buy these low profit cars, brand new.
Thanks Joe! Yeah these cars likely won’t be around much longer.
As an enthusiast I’m finally at a point in life I put a BRZ on order to give back. Due to finances buying used was about my only choice. Just happy this car was upgraded in the right spots and right moment for me.
Definitely gonna get one !!
Great video Matt! Been with you since the subaruwrxfan days. Keep up the good work buddy!
Ordered mine today!
Great review Matt. So glad Subaru has kept and updated what I consider one of the most pure vehicles made now.
Sorry Rich, Miata is always the answer.
I am very excited to drive the new BRZ and GR86 back to back. I love these cars.
Hands down the most practical review and your comparison to the GTI and Veloster are exactly what I was cross shopping.
Thanks David, I'm glad it was helpful to you!
@@MattMaranMotoring I just put my deposit down and ordered today! Your familiarity with the platform and insights were a factor in my decision.
@@aroundomaha Congrats on your order! I'm so glad the video was helpful to you!
Temp gauge read 86°? Coincidence,me thinks not!
Great review Matt
Great review, we rarely see these in the shop so it was a nice overview.
The 2nd gen isn’t even out yet…
Great video, keep it up!
My friend already ordered his BR86. Excited to see how it is in the real world compared to the old one. - Great Review! Cool Video!
That's awesome, thanks Marc!
Woahhhhh HD
Great review! I'm torn between the GR86 and the BRZ. I guess it's hard to go wrong with either. Hope your channel takes off!
Really happy about the seats being more comfortable
Thank you for bending down low so i could get a good view of the ground clearance. My only concern was scratching my driveway but it looks to have more clearance than i thought. Been watching your stuff since 2013 when you drove a wrx. I even learned the basics of driving a manual from one of your vids.
Thanks for watching all these years Geoffrey, I really appreciate it!
Ive been watching your videos since the 2013 FRS review, my fist car was supposed to be a 2013 FRS but i couldn't get it and had to settle for a 2010 TSX but now, finallyyyyyyyyyy, i am able to get one, i just submitted my order for a new 2022 BRZ Limited and I cannot wait to place my glutes on those seats. Finally getting my dream car, can't wait to take it on the twisty hill roads the that surround the Los Angeles 😩
I came to your channel back in the day as someone who was also purchasing an early delivery BRZ. I plan on buying one of these and keeping it for a few decades. Might be the last of its kind.
That's awesome Nick! I hope you enjoy it even more than your first BRZ!
Matt speaking straight FACTS
great review as always !! I just ish they would put some decent brakes on it.
Overall great review and nice attention to details!
The in-cabin audio was pretty noisy, you might consider using a better mic.
Started watching your channel from the OG BRZ if anyone was to review the new BRZ it definitely was you.
Exhaust sounds better on the brz than the 86 seems like? Maybe just the camera but this engine sounds so good 😊! Thanks for the review Matt!
Really appreciate the on road driving portion where you can clearly hear how loud the road noise is. It's real loud.
That section of road was pretty rough though, when I was in the automatic later you can hear that it's quieter. It just doesn't have a ton of sound deadening to keep it light.
@@MattMaranMotoring thanks for the response. I watched the automatic portion and went back to the gr86 video and yeah... Not too terribly loud.
Still trips me out every single video I watch and you don’t say subaruwrxfan lol. Been watching since 2013, happy to see your growth 👏🏽
Edit: the brz looks much more aggressive too! Was thinking a of a Supra when I’m done with my Tacoma in May but the way the price of everything is going up, maybe a brz or 86 will do. Slowly liking the way it looks.
I agree! I initially thought that the Toyota was prettier. After this video, the BRZ looks very handsome and classy. Strange how the other shots of it looked so awkward. It really is close to the 2017 one i had. And yes the price is stupidly cheap.
I owned the previous gen BRZ and this gen looks much better! Well, the side and rear anyways. I think with a splitter and one inch drop it will definitely do numbers at any car meet. I miss taking corners in mine. When getting in the spirit with others they would always hit the brakes and I would accelerate through like no other! Even handled much better than my E36!
just ordered mine! Limited, 6-Speed manual in World Rally Blue
Ignition red here! I'm getting impatient! Mine is coming in January....
Thanks for comparing the BRZ to the GR86 on driving dynamics, interesting too hear
If there was not a New Z coming this would be on my radar. Great car!
Hi Matt I just purchased the Subaru BRZ 2022. I traded in my Mazda MX5 (Miata) so I found your review excellent & look forward to driving my BRZ. It does feel more spacious which I found more comfortable to the MX5. I will receive on February 14th so here goes for a new fun experience. Thanks for your review. Robbie Anderson
Still happy with the BRZ instead of the Miata?
I like how the cruise control is where the old BMWs had it. Did you say "course sloth" at 4:23? Ha!
First time viewer. Subscribed and liked! Looking forward to watching your other vids.
Thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it!
Good reveiw
i cant wait it come to store here i want it on Black
Black grey and silver look real nice on this car
Subaru fan is back :-)
i hope when you do the new subaru wrx review you do a throwback "subaruwrxfan here"
Looks alot better, can't wait to see one inperson 😎
I have a 2.4L in my civic and naturally aspirated torque is nice torque :)
Matt, I try not to judge cars solely if I like them or not just by pictures because the pictures doesn’t give you that three dimensional real world view and look at the vehicle!
Sadly ill have to pick one of these up in another 2 years. But it’ll definitely be worth the wait as they will iron out any defects or recalls that happen over the first year production
It seems to remind me a lot of my 2013 FRS still, but I am really excited about the new generation. I want to see how it compares to everything I've done with my FRS. I get roughly the low to mid 20s in fuel economy now, but I also think I get about the same ballpark in torque, so I may be close to the new one power-wise.
I've owned both gens for a year, my FRS has full bolt-ons with an e85 OpenFlash tune. My stock 2023 BRZ is still noticeably faster.
New BRZ looks more mature and refined inside and out... And that extra power that has been CRIED OUT FOR, is welcome I'm sure!
lil Doug 😂😂😂 cool review
I can tell you were really enjoying the acceleration test beecuse the vein in your neck was popping out!!!
I have watched your review a few times. I cant wait to get one later this year. I can not decide between the ice silver color or the sapphire blue color. Which do you prefer Matt?
Great Video but too much ambient noise once you start driving. Please get closer to your mic in the next presentation when you're driving.
Great Review & we have very similar taste in how we enjoy cars. You helped me take a leap in my 1st hot hatch an Abarth. Now I’m ready for rwd for final gas car. How’d you compare BRZ vs Miata RF? Especially ride quality for commuting and hilly curvy ‘B’ roads. Some auto cross but daily use is my concern.
Crickets gone? How’s 1st & 2nd engagement when cold? It looks a lot better in your video than the press photos. Nice work!
Thanks! Didn’t drive it cold so can’t comment on the transmission but they did switch trans fluid for better shifts at colder temps. Crickets are gone.
He loves every about the BRZ
Toyota: EVERYONE MUST DRIVE THE 86
Subaru: Only Matt Moran is worthy of driving the BRZ
Certainly the only moderator in the world who manages to shorten an hour-long car review to less than half the time using the speed of speech.
New BRZ has C7 face. Love it. Way better than the GR86 front grille.
I wish I could get the engine and chassis of the 6th gen Camaro but with this styling.
BRZ Gen 2: "Irish! Look at me, look at me! I'm the Catfish now!"
I think it boils down to whether you want the GR86's superior styling? (They didn't integrate the license plate into the bumper mold.) Or if you want Subaru backing up your warranty claims? (Toyota dealerships aren't going to be anywhere nearly as competent working on that Boxer motor, which got proven out with the valve spring recall.)
wrx fan here
owned a frs 2013 now a brz ts with HKS super charger ....the new ones im not digging ill get nismo 400z next .. that head unit bezels are huge and bulky
R.I.P. physical key, you will be missed....
When I seen you with the helmet I died😭😭
Scrolled by this comment right when he popped up w da helmet lmaooo I’m crying 😂😂😂
Great review. I wish could have one BRZ/GR86... Does it have spare wheel?
It does!
You should have used the old SubaruWRXFan intro for old times sake for this review
Analogue gauges would look so much better.
Lovely car though well done.
Really hate to say it, but I think I prefer the more understated front-end of the Toyota 86 twin of the BRZ. And, ironically the more up-swept spoiler on the 86 too. Still.... I'd feel weird taking a Subaru with Toyota badges to a Toyota dealership garage if the car years down the road needed some work done on it.
Hi Matt, may I ask a simple question? Are there any changes to the car keys? Compared with 1st generation BRZ?
Well, the GR got the start up animation in the center guage, free 2 year maintenance and the cheaper plastic door openner panels. Things I wish they both have are a "sun and sound package."
This has a start up animation too, I just didn’t film it. It says BRZ in the middle with the same boxer piston animation as the GR.
@@MattMaranMotoring Hope they could improve the brightness in the following model year...
The 86 Premium gets a 8-speaker JBL system and it's been said there is gonna be a optional trunk Sub as well. I haven't seen anything at all about the BRZ's audio system.
@@DragonKnightX12 I'm not sure where you read that the 8 speaker system is a JBL unit, but it isn't branded as such if it is. At the official presentation they didn't tell us about any branding for the 8 speaker system. Option sub in the trunk is true, they told us about that. No branding for it either. The BRZ systems will be the same and will likely offer the same sub.
@@MattMaranMotoring I swear I read that somewhere. It does sound pretty decent on TheTopher's 86 review.
Just thought it was kind of odd Subaru dosen't mention anything about, even when their already taking orders.
I really wish they had ventilated seats option.
What shoes are you wearing? They look like specialized driver's shoes. I have been looking and looking and those are THE coolest shoes I have ever seen; made for heel & toe driving? Where can they be bought? I have not seen anything like them before! Thank you in advance..
That drivers display is like something from Atari in the 1980's (look it up)
It looks like a mini Acura NSX from the rear!
Which grill do you like more the gr86 or the BRZ’s
According to Jason Cammisa (from Hagerty), the new GR86 (base) can hit note to 60 in only 5.9 seconds (standstill). So that means the premium might be able to do 5.7ish cuz of the better tires. Not that it matters in a car like this but still.
In manual or auto?
@@richardblake5533
Manual base model
Not bad at all. I've seen the old gen tested manual at 6.2 in ideal conditions so maybe it can be faster in the right hands.
@@richardblake5533
Yeah and this is with the less grippy tires. In the right conditions, with the right driver, the premium models can probably do it in 5.7ish seconds.
Hey matt , I’m very interested in this car! But do you think it’s good for a daily? Even in winter?
I think so! Winter driving will depend on how much snow you get in your area but my old BRZ I drove all through winter on snow tires in Pittsburgh and it did fine. I just had to avoid starting on hills. The limited slip diff really helps.
I’m sorry but the new 86 front end looks so much better in my opinion. Not only that but the premium comes with the sick duckbill spoiler
That is just crazy
Don’t like the license plate molding on the front. Is this the same dark blue that’s on the GR86?
It is. They share most of the colors like the last gen, I believe the only unique shades are World Rally Blue for the BRZ and Neptune Blue for the GR 86.
Yea. The 86's front plate holder is hidden in the grill.
“Active sound enhancement”? (14:50)
Is that a kind way of saying fake engine noise played though speakers? Can that be turned off?
Pretty disappointed you didn't say "whatsupeverybodySubaruBRZfan here". Maybe saving the old school throwback for the new WRX?
