    Good stuff Matty, it's nice getting advice from someone that actually lives up north and hikes in the same Alberta conditions

    Great tips. My adults sons and I recently backpacked in Oregon in the rain. My son brought a 10x10 lightweight, not UL tarp. Though he carried the extra weight, it made a potential miserable experience a good one. It was large enough so that all 3 of us could sit, cook and organize ourselves under it and just watch the rain and visit with each other until bed time.

      ive had friends carry tarps before, but we rarely ever use them.. Usually if its raining in camp we just go to bed

    CHOOSE THE CORECT CLOTHING AND GEAR. Newly rejuvenated (washed and DWR'd) GORE-TEX, Synthetic clothing. AND a tent with the inner tent PRE-attached to the fly!! Double wall tents by TARPTENT come to mind.. Tents with flys that must be attached AFTER TEH MAIN BODY AND POLES ARE U ARE DISASTERS TO PITCH OR TAKE DOWN IN THE RAIN.

    Laying stuff out to dry in the sun is awesome! It’s a sign to stop and enjoy the weather, nice view and rest. Lays stuff out to dry, which also kills bacteria which could cause nasty smells. Stuff weighs less afterwards, no fungi or mold, no smells no problems. It’s also a good chance to take a nap, maybe even make/eat a nice meal

    I hike in shorts as I find legs dry a lot quicker than long pants. Once dry at camp, I put on long thermal pants.

    • @MattyOutdoors
      @MattyOutdoors  2 місяці тому

      Depends on what kind of pants. I usually wear tights, and find they dry extremely quickly, and help maintain warmth, as well as protect my legs and shins from getting shredded by thorns, willows, etc while hiking along.. I don't always venture out on the most well established routes, so a bit of protection for the legs is always nice.

      @MattyOutdoors my shorts are actually bathers from K'Mart. I'm hiking a 200 klm stretch on the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia through forests, dunes, and coastal heath, Walpole to Albany. There are 3 sided shelters about 20klm s apart. We're spoilt on this track.
      There are some rough, low-lying sections of scrub with prickles, but they keep my legs warm. It's winter here, and I'll be expecting 3°Centigrade mornings, maximums around 18°C.

    I like day trips and campsites that are near the trail head so I can keep extra clothing in the car when it's raining. I also like the more popular trails when it's raining so I don't have to deal with the typical crowds.

      I usually have to plan my hikes months in advance, so I just deal with the weather as it comws

      @@MattyOutdoors most of mine are last minute weekend hikes and overnighters. Thankfully much of the White Mountains National Forest is under 3hrs away. So I will adjust plans depending on the weather.

    Breathable rain jackets are the biggest car of all time when it comes to outdoor gear. They do absolutely nothing.

    Good stuff, Matty! I enjoy your videos and appreciate your advice. Rain can either be a pleasant refresher on a warm summer day or it can snuff your life out on a whim. Be prepared. Taking time to dry out wet gear is time well spent! My advice to newer backpackers would be to know your system. Set up in the rain at home several times before you hit the trail - far better to learn from mistakes in your backyard than in the sticks.
    Nothing about pit zips for the rain jacket? I wear OR Foray - love the zip up sides and pit zips!

    • @MattyOutdoors
      @MattyOutdoors  Рік тому

      I honestly find pit zips really over rated, and have never really found them to make any difference

    Have you tried any 'self-drying' Paramo or Buffalo clothing to beat the rain? They work on body heat / movement to push / wick moisture away from the body into an inner layer and then on to and out from a breathable outer layer.
    Many people in damp British mountains swear by them.....and others curse them. 🎉

      never heard of it before, but not likely something I'd try out. I guess I just prefer the tried and true rain jacket, and suck it up method

    Great tips. Going on my first solo overnight tomorrow and and watching as the forcast keeps saying itll dump rain both days. Trying to keep my spirits up. The worst day of backpacking is still better than a day on the couch!

    I watched a guy hike the swampy area of the Florida trail; the suck embraced him! lol Thanks for the tips. I like those metal clips with black body and silver wire "wings". They come in many sizes are are great to secure your wet socks or towel to the outside of your pack to dry while you hike.

    If you know you'll more than likely be hiking in cold, wet and miserable conditions maybe bring a thermal bottle and brew yourself a hot drink before you start hiking for the day. It might help you keep hydrated and improve your mood

    Snugpack pro has been the best system I’ve found. Costs around $60 but it’s a parka with sleeves. So no need for pack cover. Super light also. I spent 9 hours solid in a steady soaking rain. I was dry other than my own sweat.
