Great teaching and topic…I just wanted to back you and Norm up with a little more discussion on this topic…I don’t know why so many preachers insist that calling is necessary for eternal salvation…since calling on the Lord is about asking for deliverance of a circumstance in a believers life and has nothing to do with eternal salvation at all…Not to be harsh…but…I hope the people you mentioned understand that if they are teaching this as part of the salvation message they are under the very curse of God… GAL 1:8-9: But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Point 1: Salvation is completely free to everyone who will trust in Christ and His Finished work on the Cross…While on the cross the last word Jesus said with a loud cry was … Tetelestai - English translation: The Work Is Complete or PAID IN FULL. Here are a few Scriptures that teach that salvation is apart from calling or praying or anything else we could do and is by faith alone in Christ alone: EDH 2:8-9 FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THROUGH FAITH; AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES; IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD; NOT OF WORKS, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST. (No one will be in heaven saying I am here because I called on the name of the Lord and those that were thrown into the lake of fire did not…there will be no boasting of any kind) JOHN 6:47 VERILY, VERILY, I SAY UNTO YOU, HE THAT BELIEVETH ON ME HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. (Right from our Savior Christ’s own lips…notice the words verily, verily expressed twice…this is Christ’s way of pleading with the hearer/in our case reader…not to miss this very important teaching…that salvation is in no other and comes by no other way but by believing/trusting in what Christ did for each and every person on the planet…and by believing on Him you are saved at that moment. (The verse below is probably the clearest verse in all the scriptures…Why? Because the Jailer out and out asks Paul…WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?…Paul never told this jailer he had to call on the name of the Lord, or anything else but believe) ACTS 16: 25-31: 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[a] called for lights and rushed in and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. (There are many, many, more wonderful scripture verses that say it is only by believing in Christ alone and His finished work, that we are saved.) Point 2: (probably the most important point) But doesn’t it say, “For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13)? Yes, and this is referring to prayer, but when it speaks of being saved, it is not speaking of salvation from the second death. The Apostle Paul is using an Old Testament reference to Jehovah and applying it to Christ to prove the deity of Jesus Christ. Every time you read in Scripture that someone called on the Lord, it was someone who already was a child of God. And to prove that Romans 10:13 is no exception, I want you to read the very next verse. It says, “HOW THEN SHALL THEY CALL ON HIM IN WHOM THEY HAVE NOT BELIEVED?” (Romans 10:14). Paul is saying that a person cannot call upon the Name of the Lord unless he has already believed in Christ (calling on His Name won’t save you from the second death, but believing on His Name will). A person is saved from eternal punishment/second death the moment he believes and now, because he is a child of God, he is in a position to call upon God to save him from circumstances in his life. And the promise of Romans 10:12 is that “the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.” I hope everyone can see that calling will not save a person from hell fire…but believing in Him will…I believe God listens to believers and unbelievers… but it is the believer who is in fellowship with Christ that is in a special position to call on the name of the Lord to save him from his circumstances here on earth…The word saved is not always used in regard to Eternal salvation but can be used…as salvation from physical harm or death. God bless and protect you and your family Pastor Jesse…big hug to all of the congregation at Calvary Community Church... Rob.
Thanks for keeping the message plain and clear and using Bible to back it up. We were just discussing this in our Bible study. Our sinful nature as fallen humans always want to add to the gospel for some reason. Not sure why we want to make it more complicated 😊
Also we see how Paul later sandwiches his point by quoting Zephaniah 1:18 and later Joel which is also speaking of the day of the Lord's wrath and Israel calling upon the Lord for physical deliverance/salvation from that day of trouble. Once understood it makes perfect sense as well as silences any erroneous ideas one must make a public profession to get eternal life as well as reminding saints they can call on the Lord to help/save/rescue/deliver them from troubles in this life. Rom 9:28 KJV For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. Zep 1:18 KJV Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land. Rom 10:13 KJV For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. Rom 11:26 KJV And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: Isa 59:20 KJV And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. Romans 9-11 is packed with Jewish focus of God fulfilling promises to national Israel and largely focuses on the Day of the Lord and Israel's part within that time period. It is very cool actually when the dots are connected more and more😊
Thank you Brother Jesse for the clear teaching of God's word on this rather of confession so many are teaching out of context as part as the means of receiving salvation. Confession is to be only a result of what one has already believed (how that trusting in Jesus Christ as their Saviour saved them) and sharing that with others. Confession doesn't save anyone, only trusting Jesus Christ as one's Saviour saves them. God bless you!
JM, I enjoy your teachings. I'm still learning (as a Pastor in my 60s). On one hand, you have Calvinists discouraging verbal confessions (as you know & have taught, they think people are fooled that they can get saved by "Calling on the name of the Lord"/by believing, because you can only be saved by Calvinistic irresistible regeneration, smack palm to forehead now!!). To them I point out the Thief on the cross verbally affirming Jesus deity, the Publican stating "God have mercy on me a sinner", Nicodemus "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God...", The Roman Centurion at the cross "Certainly this was a righteous man", etc. On the other hand, we have those that emphatically insist a public audible declaration of saving faith in Christ must be said for salvation??? Too many passages to list in the Gospels & Acts that state "many believed" without referencing that they did or didn't give a verbal ascent!!! So much for the shipwright-deckhand (maybe known to have a little too much Brandy) on the Titanic who went to the hull to try & seal off doors & compartments trapping himself & believing on Jesus in his final moments...tough cookies Bro, no grace (Unmerited, Undeserved Favor) for him??? Anyway, great expose'on this topic.

how do you know theyve believed without confession? I dont think confession is adding to the gospel since "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh". Its normal that when someones passes from death unto life that in the joy of hope they confess Christ. I would be extremely worried if someone says they believed but were fearful to confess Christ as their saviour.
I would ask you in response, can you see their heart or can you see the spirit? If not then how can confession "prove" that someone is saved? Eternal life is given through faith, one must simply believe.
@@timothyklock1931 Why would you be scared or uninterested to confess Christ in the West where there is no danger to do so? Can you see every member of your churches heart? then why do you call them brother or sister? this goes both ways. Its not a good sign if someone refuses to confess Christ
You said " where is it in scriptures that says you have to ask God to save you" Have you read Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. I believe a lost person does not need to confess he believes in the Gospel unto men to get saved, but he definitely needs to call upon the name of the Lord to be saved.
Well there is nothing wrong with doing that, but the only requirement is belief. We find this stated clearly in passages like John 3:15-18, 1 John 5:10-13, and Romans 3:24-28. The “call upon the name of the Lord” has specific reference in its context. The thief already believed before he asked. It’s better to state what we know clearly: believe, as opposed to believe and “call.” That adds a yoke of works especially in the scenario of a mute or someone dying. Plus by the time you say something to God about your belief, you have already believed it. - Trent
"My goal is not to berate them or belittle them ..." Then might I suggest that you not call them out as "false teachers" in the first place. If belief on Jesus is the sole necessary condition for salvation then that's the goal. It doesn't matter at all how you persuade people to believe, just that they do believe. Anything else is just you getting in your own way.
@jesuschristisyhwh I am not going to impose my feeble human reasoning on God, saying "God must be this way," or "He must not be that way." God can do as He pleases. However, you are right, we do have a choice: 1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
@jesuschristisyhwh To me it matters more that John Calvin believed on Jesus than whether Calvin had the gospel (and its implications) correctly figured out. Also Calvinism, as we know it today, is not what Calvin taught. The petals of the TULIP were fleshed out by the Synod of Dort as they wrestled with what it meant to be reformed.
@jesuschristisyhwh I think you'd be surprised by the number of things I understand perfectly well. One of those things that I do understand is that the Son of God was crucified (tortured to death) in my place in order that I might not go to hell. All else pales to insignificance when compared to that fact. Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. If I'm a Calvinist, clutching all five petals of the TULIP as tightly as possible, am I excluded from the whosoever? Is there reason for me to be ashamed even though Scripture says plainly that I won't be ashamed?
The apostle Paul called people out by name. And lest there be an argument that he did not call out Christian brothers: he also called out Peter and Barnabas. 1 Timothy 1:19-20 Hymenaeus and Alexander 2 Timothy 2:17 Hymenæus and Philetus 2 Timothy 4:10 Demas Galatians 2:11-14 Peter and Barnabas See also: Acts 17:11 1 Thessalonians 5:21 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 Colossians 2:8 1 John 4:1 Romans 16:17 2 Timothy 3:13-17
There is a derogatory term gong around called "cheap grace". That is the most disgusting thing I ever heard, that what Jesus went through to save us sinners was cheap. If Jesus had not gone to the cross no one would have been saved. Not old testament, new testament or the tribulation. How sick can people be? Second Peter 3:16-18. They wrest the scriptures to their own destruction.
"If I'm soul winning with somebody and they believe on Jesus Christ that He paid for their Sins on the cross, I KNOW THE BIBLE SAYS THEY ARE SAVED so I can give them assurance right there in that moment." The most horrifyingly deceptive statement one human can make to another. Pal, you don't know anything for certain, it's called Faith and you can't give anyone anything of any value. You would be wise to stop broadcasting your material.
Jeremiah 17:9. Belief is not an intellectual action. It comes with a Changing of the Heart. From someone who was given the courage to dig to the very bottom of their own slimy barrel, I can attest to that unequivocally. To understand what I am saying you first need to understand the human condition. You cannot understand that unless you first accede to your own condition. We all share the same condition, assuming you are rational enough to agree to your humanity. What you stated was literalism, ignoring loads of other knowledge put forward for us in Scripture. You've also ignored, at some point, what He would have placed on your own heart. Don't ask me to quote Scripture, theological debates are an exercise in folly, what matters is that we listen to His words of Wisdom when He places them on our hearts.
“Belief is not an intellectual action. It comes with a changing of the heart.” Yet the Bible says you must believe to receive any change… Faith then eternal life. Faith then justification. Faith then Spirit sealing. I do agree that man’s condition is depraved, but faith is something anyone is capable of exercising. It is an action done completely in the mind. One simply changes their mind from unbelief to belief. “Literalism.” You trust your own supposed experience and God given revelation instead of the literal scripture? You then have no basis to stand on. Also, I’m pretty sure you are attesting my claims, so the debate burden is on you. 🙄 - Trent
Perhaps I should have qualified and said 'debates in theological literalism are an exercise in folly." I did not say my experience trumps scripture and I certainly did not say that my experience is contradictory to any Biblical Principal, note that I said Principal, not interpretation, two oppositional things. Belief is a very loosely used word. Understanding all we can in this life about Him, it is a mistake to think for one moment that saying we 'believe in Him' will trump His directive to live "according to His Will". We are not capable of following the Law, because anything we do of our volition is Sin, it's done in Pride; "we don't even know how to pray", which suggests anything we might ask for will not align with His Will. We are so blind. So where does that leave us? It leaves 'I believe' as a dangerous theological statement, and worse, an indicator of an unsurrendered life. He never asked for something He knows we cannot truthfully provide (belief), He asks for our trust (Faith). What does the servant do? The servant has surrendered their own desires for their life in order to fulfill the will of their master.

Great teaching and topic…I just wanted to back you and Norm up with a little more discussion on this topic…I don’t know why so many preachers insist that calling is necessary for eternal salvation…since calling on the Lord is about asking for deliverance of a circumstance in a believers life and has nothing to do with eternal salvation at all…Not to be harsh…but…I hope the people you mentioned understand that if they are teaching this as part of the salvation message they are under the very curse of God…

1 John 4:1
Romans 16:17
2 Timothy 3:13-17
Why does 1 John 5:13 say we can know we have eternal life? Why does Jesus make “Verily, verily” statements regarding eternal life?
