Was wondering if this verse means they would have believed in vain if the resurrection weren’t true? Paul goes onto repeat the gospel with eyewitness verification to prove perhaps they didn’t believe in vain as this is true. Christ is risen indeed!
I believe that what this means is to believe without the effect of being saved by God's grace and a way in which one can believe in vain is by believing in the gospel + something else. I did a study in this and it seems to be believing but with some error in the belief therefore they aren't saved, like not believing that Jesus is God or that his payment alone is sufficient.
Amen! Keeping the gospel in memory is a work. We are not positionally saved by our works. The salvation referenced in 1 Corinthians 15:2 is an experiential salvation and not a positional salvation. The Corinthians were already positionally saved. The beginning of 1 Corinthians chapter 15 presents the gospel within the context of discipleship. The Corinthians were treasuring worldly gains too much when it is more expedient to treasure heavenly gains. I believe the Apostle Paul was reminding them of what the resurrection means for them and encouraging them to keep the gospel in memory in an effort to get them more focused on treasuring heavenly gains. Matthew 6:19-21 KJV 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

What "unless you believed in vain" means if found in verses 12-18:
Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then they who are in Christ which are now fallen asleep have perished. (1 Corinthians 15:12-18)
