- Slayer's Controversial & Impressive Story
Heavy metal has always been associated with evil themes since its inception, but one band, in particular, took the genre’s satanic associations to new extremes in the 80s: Slayer.
Considered one of the pioneers of thrash metal, Slayer was undoubtedly the most controversial, most aggressive, and perhaps next to Metallica, the most influential of the Big 4 of thrash. Anything that was considered taboo and drew the ire of conservative folks, Slayer gladly used to fuel its own infamy. Controversial, Slayer had a song for every one of those and thus influenced more extreme metal bands in its wake who tried to push the boundaries of controversy even further.

Slayer won another Grammy Award for Final Six, it was a bonus track on Christ Illusion.
right on! well deserved for sure!🎸🔥
I’m a Huge Conservative and a HUGE SLAYER FAN!
that is huge!🔥🎸
@@theflamingrockshow Nah man, I hang with a lot of metal heads and all of em are conservatives.
You keep mentioning "Conservative" when it was Democrats who did the PMRC. Tipper Gore, Al Gore's wife, ran it. As a conservative, I have no problems with Slayer. Tom Araya is a good Catholic boy whose father is a deacon in the Catholic Church. People shouldn't have a problem with Slayer if they have no problems with horror movies, Holocaust documentaries, etc. Because that's what their songs are about. As Araya himself said, "People are not in good shape to where they have to question their own belief system because of a book or a story somebody wrote, or a Slayer song."
@@waverlyking6045 Sure, you're definitely correct. My point is that people who wanted to restrict/ban slayer were not conservatives (exclusively). The video keeps blaming "conservatives" even with a pic of Tipper on screen at the time.
Censorship isn't a left/right thing. Both sides do it. To say it was "conservatives" doing all the censoring/banning of Slayer is inaccurate.
The greater irony is at least Araya and King can be described as "slightly right-leaning" given some of their past comments.
@@waverlyking6045 Thank you! Your kind words are appreciated!
indeed!🎸🔥
Exactly. Also, I always wondered why its normal to love movies about people being violently killed in horrible ways, but if a song is too aggressive you are a satan worshipper 🤷♂️
They say despised by conservatives: I am a conservative in many areas but I LOVE SLAYER!!!!!!!!!
we love Slayer too!🔥🤘
Well done
great doc but people always mix up Huntington Park with Huntington Beach. Slayer were from HP
thanks for the heads up!💥🤘
Good shit man. My favourite albums are hell awaits, reign in blood , South of heaven and seasons in the abyss
yeah, all amazing ones!💥🎸
Good stuff. There is more on "Divine Intervention" than what has been shown. they had a lot of time on that album. Quality sound on that one.
sure there is!🤘💥
Dave wasn’t even making 1k a show when he got fired slayer sold out, but the money isn’t what they wanted to begin with Shout out Dave for Wanting his dues!
🔥💯
The only thing missing is the mention of John Dette joining Slayer in 1996 (Undisputed Attitude) & returning in 2013 for summer festival dates until contacting Paul in 2014 for a European Tour then recording the single 'Implode' which was only a demo. They performed the song at the Metal Hammer Golden God's Awards which is when they officially announced Gary Holt & Paul as permanent members.
Just to be clear John Dette did not play in Undisputted Attitude, but he's the one on the I hate you Video. For that matter also Tony Scaglione toured with the band when Dave left during the Reign in Blood Tour.
@@nachomagallanico No problem we're all good.👍🏻John did play the UA tour in 96' though my dad met the whole band in Baltimore. He has a photo with them at the 98 Rock Station (He was working their at the time.)
@@alexlebon6456 ohhhh man your dad is a real lucky man, that tour in 96 when they played several undisputed tunes, was if I'm not mistaken only in small clubs, so those shows are unique. I had the chance to see them in a small club packed with 400 people back in 2014....so sick
got it!🔥🎸
I hate how people always forget to mention Jack Black used to be in the band.
🔥👍
That one bootleg demo tape of him in Slayer is hard to find for sure.
This is probably one of the best Slayer documentaries I've seen. Keep up the good work!
amazing!🔥 thanks!🤘🎸
Do you find Slayer too controversial?
not too much!
Hell no!!! Been a huge fan since 1987....
No
Nope, not at all. Been a fan since the 80's, still am, and have taken my kids to a Slayer concert.
Their music is great to listen to before martial arts training and competitions: I was blasting YOU AGAINST YOU at my second BJJ tournament and got 3rd place. Even as I train now I’ll go to the gym and have Slayer turned up high!!!!
Slayer in the gym, amazing feeling!👏💯
Rick rubin produced danzig back in 1988
Kool
yo why do keep throwing all conservitives under the bus im one but love slayer we're not all morons
💯👍
Slayer original band was the best metal band of its time all the way to 1990 sessions I still loved them after but it just wasn't the same without Lombardo on those drums holy shit I was hooked after the first album in 1981heavy black metal truly evil music
exactly, very powerful sound!🎸🚀
Yes! That's why I love them!🔥
heavyweights!🤘🔥
Reign in Blood classic Slayer album!
classic and powerful one too!🤘🔥
SLAYER formed in Huntington Park, not Huntington Beach. Just saying...
got u!🔥👍
Never attempted to lighten up their sound or fundamentally change it to fit in with the current music scene unlike the other "big four" of thrash. Anthrax fired their vocalist to try and cash in on the grunge thing, Megadeth tried to sell out twice and Metallica isn't the same band ever since they got off the tour for Justice. Ok there was that one album Slayer did but it really isn't that bad. It still sounded like Slayer and they've never made any compromises in terms of making the music lighter. That's why Slayer has pretty much universal acceptance from metal fans and critics while the other three do not.
I have to shit on Metallica a little bit. As an 11 year old seeing the video for One on Headbanger's Ball got me hooked on metal for life. I know people say Justice is one of the weaker albums from their first four but it's my favorite by far. That album defined what I thought metal should be. I had pretty much every lyric, riff, solo and drum fill from their first four albums memorized by the time the Black Album came out and boy was I bummed when I played it for the first time. The guitar tones were muddy as opposed to the crisp, sharp tone of Justice, Hetfiled's growl wasn't nearly as mean, some of the lyrics are embarrassingly bad and there's no instrumental track (To Live is to Die is in my top 3 Metallica songs). They only got worse from there on and have never recovered. Death Magnetic wasn't the return to form that people said it was and this new album everyone is praising to high heaven sucks. It's just boring. They named their band after a genre of music and then pretty much stopped playing that genre.
good point!💯🎸
I think you meant Huntington Park CA. Not Huntington Beach. They’re different. I lived near Huntington Park and that’s where they grew up.
I've heard southgate
@@lopeza.8046 yeah, South Gate and Huntington Park are right next to each other.
@@sconni666 cool. I'm not from there. I'm from the central valley and been around down there a few times. Wasn't sure
💯👍
yup if you watch an interview with Tom Araya, he grew up in the barrio pretty much where I did. Maywood, Bell, South Gate & Huntington Park. The Cypress Hill guys are from South gate, Slayer I always heard were Huntington Park. James from Metallica born & raised in Downey. HP is confused for HB which is waaayyy different lol
It’s not likely they were influenced by venom they were
As Venom started in the late '70s, they probably influenced lots of '80s bands, including Slayer💯🎸
HUNTINGTON PARK… not Huntington Beach. Get your facts straight
🔥👍
next to metallica uhm wrong them megadeth and anthrax are the best of the 4
🔥🎸
Dude hates conservatives lol
💥🎸
"promosm"
🔥🎸
FACT check: you're wrong, is not Huntington Beach, it was Huntington Park CA where is Slayer was Born!!
Got it, thanks!💯
