  • In this video I'm unboxing my new Camponotus Ligniperda ant colony. This new ant colony was on my wish list from the very start. There is limited amount of source material available for this colony so every tip you can give me is welcome!

    1. GET ENTOMOLOGICAL TWEEZERS
    2. Always work inside a larger container with a (temporary) barrier to prevent ants running off (dabbed-on baby powder is perfect for this purpose).
    3. Stupid Mierenspecialist jars won't allow you to shake them out directly into a test tube, so just let the ants run out. It's only a few and they are low priority.
    4. Move remaining brood into fresh tube (you can just pick it up directly, even eggs, with entomological tweezers, else use a damp brush).
    5. Grab the queen or trap her with the tube either inside the jar or in a corner of the container, add workers too but only if you can do it in under a few seconds.
    6. Stopper the tube and darken it. Key is to make them calm down quickly so they don't smear formic acid everywhere.
    7. After 5 minutes, once they calmed down, gently connect the test tube to the nest (waiting time is so the tube becomes 'nest').
    8. Gather the remaining workers (and brood they'll have dropped after running off with it) and put it into the outworld.
    9. Wait with feeding until they calmed down. While they sometimes can instantly calm down running into food, they can also make a mess.
    Additional trick is to put the colony into the fridge for a bit to make them lethargic and easy to move directly without a fuss.
    Keep an eye on condensation forming though.
    There are some easier alternatives, but your used setup isn't suitable for them as the outworld is either too small and can't be secured with a barrier. Also there is no tubing connector (so just jamming tubing into the jar with cotton and connecting that is no option either).
    That setup is difficult to feed large, fast excitable ants in. At around a dozen Camponotus ligniperda workers you'll have to either connect a more useful outworld (if that second connector takes tubing), or move them again to a more suitable setup (hopefully in a more controlled manner this time).
    And those cocoons aren't 'very very close to hatching' yet. They get a lot darker and shrivelled in their final days before eclosure.

      Thank you so much for writing such a detailed comment with very helpful tips! Right now I have them for 4 weeks and the mini outworld for me works very well. I had no problem with it so far and if they outgrow it I'll just plug out the test tube and connect them to something else. I thought they would get more workers soon, apparently I was wrong😰

    Normally you move ligniperdas somewehere between 30 - 40 workers :) ane please do never move your ants like this... it's enormous stress for them. Just lay the cointainer in an plastic-box outworld and wait till they moved by their own. Then you can attach the test tube to your test tube arena. ;)

    • @EstheticAnts
      @EstheticAnts  3 роки тому +3

      Yeah I had misjudged the situation. I thought it would go a lot smoother. If it was cotton I could pull out the cotton with the queen and workers on it. I have done that so many times.

    What a nice video!
    About moving the Camponotus ligniperda, in my opinion it's not really about colony size, but colony age. The first two years are the slowest. Most Camponotus ligniperda colonys get a big "baby boom" in their third year, so I would keep them in testtubes and move them in to a nest when the colony is three years old. You can of course move them in to a nest earlyer, but they are not as active in their first and second year.

    Oh my that transfer method for those ants was nuts haha! Fair play for trying that! Think it can be very stressful for them tho so best to let them do it themselves next time! I always connected up another tube and made it more appealing to them and over a few days they moved themselves! ATM I have 8 workers and pupae close to hatching. They've just come out of hibernation and hopefully will grow in numbers a bit this year! Around 50 would be great! I mived mine into a nest with 6 workers and tbh they're doing great! But I would say they probs do better in a test tube for a little longer! Keep going man! Love ant videos

  • @antsnetherlands20
    @antsnetherlands20 3 роки тому +3

    Good job, you stressed them all out within minutes of unboxing them. Camponotus ligniperda deal very badly with stress. The queen might stop laying for a long while when stressed. But anyway, they should recover after a while. Feed them much sugars (they love them) and proteins ofcourse. Keep them on partially on a heating mat or cable; they will thermoregulate and place their brood on the heat every now and then. Good luck!
    Edit: Camponotus ligniperda grow much faster with heat and the best thing to do is just leave them alone, apart from feeding them ofcourse

    • @EstheticAnts
      @EstheticAnts  3 роки тому +2

      I unboxed them 3 days after I received them. She laid tons of fresh brood I think she's alright. I'm also planning to heat them up soon! I think all queen deal badly with stress haha but yeah this was far from ideal. I'm just a beginner ant keeper making beginner mistakes😅

    Hi . So I have 3 ligniperda colonies from last year nuptial flights and i can tell that they should be moved depending on the size of test tube . As long as they are not super squizeed they should be ok . Ifthere is too much w tho they can startto eat their own brood .

  • @peternl3440
    @peternl3440 3 роки тому +2

    I have the 3D nest from mierenspecialist (where you got your ants) right from the start. They are doing fine! Since you make your own nests just go for it. They are big ants so don’t go too small. The one I have does have some grout for keeping it moist, not sure if your nests have that. Tim from mierenspecialist sends his ants in those viles, not sure why. Next time, attach a tube to that outworld you had there (that aliexpress one) and put the vile in there and let them move into a testube. It will be less stressful for them.

    • @EstheticAnts
      @EstheticAnts  3 роки тому

      Yeah I know his nest they are quite decent. They would be fine in my nests but I really want a wooden nest in the future and that seems possible with camponotus ligniperda. The move was just a big beginner mistake. Some more expierienced people say just dump them in there so I did....

      @@Ophnoxis Adding another test tube doesn't solve the problem. And the connector unit doesn't have a tubing connector (unless the second test tube connector also doubles for tubing, but that does result in an awkward setup).
