History vs the movie 'Newsies' (an audio podcast)

In the musical Newsies, we learned about the newsboys strike of 1899. As great as the song and dance may be, no one expects that part of the film to be true to history. But that begs the question, how much else was changed for the film?
In this audio podcast, we'll compare what really happened in history with the events we saw on screen.

After the strike Kid Blink became a guide in Chinatown and on May 2, 1913 the New York Sun reported that Kid Blink was sick with tuberculosis. Two months later, he died at the age of either 30 or 32.

Of course they don't sing on actual event.. duh. It's musical movie and its based on a true story like les miserables and Miss saigon..

Les Misérables and Miss Saigon are not based on true stories. They happen during real historical events (revolution, war) but the characters are all fictional.

I love this movie, but i take issue with the based on a true story moniker. I think a more accurate description would be a historical fiction film, inspired by true events.

Nope... It started in Queens... The next day the manhatten newsies joined the strike and Kid Blink stepped up as a leader along with Racetrack (for brooklyn) and Annie (for manhatten)

Racetrack was a name of the original (the actual event) and a character in the movie

In the movie, I think they mean it was the first newie strike.
