I’ve had them 2 days, I also own a set of the xm4. The max set are just better all round. From build to the sound, they’re just better. And listening to movies with spatial audio really is something else. The one downside is that price, but they’re incredibly well made, and if you listen to plenty of music on the go, or watch movies on your tablet or phone, I think you can justify paying for them.
The reason why you still can hear the tire on the concrete is simple. You just don’t only hear it with you ears. Your whole body is getting the little swings and make you your own box for sounds 😉
I'd almost agree with this, and it's quite possible that this is a big contributor, but knowing how Apple handles ANC on AirPods Pro I know that it hates sounds like that. It doesn't just have sharp sounds playing in my ears - the music distorts and contorts beyond all recognition as the ANC tries its best to compensate for the noise, but it can't do it. AirPods Max have way better mics and dual chips, but I'd still expect a similar effect. On car journeys, I always have ANC off for the Pros.
I have always had an issue with AAC, it hurts to listen too it. I will always choose an AC3 codec for TV/Movies compared to AAC. I can't buy anything from Apple as it comes in AAC format. I have never experienced true HiFi listening but when creative released their audigy 2 years ago I realised more data was always better.
Learned some things! Awesome review, dude! Your “muddy” comment about the XM4’s is exactly why I returned my AirPods Max(seemed to lack bass at the time), got the XM4’s, listened to them outta the box(TERRIBLE) and tweaked the settings, and went right back into Best Buy and compared them directly to the AirPods Max for nearly an hour lol… I’m crazy, I know… but I wasn’t leaving until I had the best pair of headphones for my money! In my comparison, at higher volume, the XM4’s had obvious distortion and sounded muddy while the Max did NOT! Even at the highest volume the Max were crystal clear! I also realized that the Max bass very much depends on the track you’re listening to. It felt like I was hearing the music as the artist intended on the Max. Some songs literally made me feel as if I was in the studio! I walked out with the Max and I’m good with my purchase! Outstanding headphones! I also got them for $445 because I got my returned ones back and they were technically “open box” lmao…
my wife got me a pair for Christmas as soon as they launched. I've used them ever since. I can say these are the best headphones I've ever owned. the anc at times can be bothersome for long periods with any audio. Other than that, 10/10
The AirPods max is horribly overpriced tho. It’s sound quality is outclassed by closed back studio monitors that cost less than $200 like the AKG K371. I don’t understand why anyone would buy these. Maybe the AirPods max can be travelling headphones as they have anc and transparency mode but they’re just so huge, bulky and heavy. I would rather get the Sony wh-1000xm4 and use them with some eq.
@@hy7968 As a previous owner, Sony WH-1000XM4 with EQ isn't getting close to Airpods Max. Also, you're saying for $200 less you could get AKG K371, so its clear you're stuck in this 'sound quality or die' mindset. The AKG will sound better. sure. But they're wired, they have no ANC, no transparency mode and they're unbelievably less convenient for people on air travel or walking to/from work, or just casual use. Airpods aren't popular for their sound quality (even though it's pretty decent), they're popular for their convenience.
As a fellow audiophile, thank you for this review, when i first heard the news and the lack of info apple came out with I too jumped on the hate train, but you changed my mind, so thanks
@@SimonT54 I’m not an audiophile but the sound quality is certainly premium, and the anc and transparent feel seriously luxurious. I do prep work in a kitchen and sometimes get to listen to podcasts, and going from paused in transparency to listening in noise cancelation, feels like walking into a movie, as the background noise fades away nearly completely.
@@MrKacperk Some of us like to run and workout with our headphones... Try to do that with those rocks you call headphones.. Been doing it for years with Sony's and the plastic make them light enough.
The transparency mode makes them worth it. Never been so impressed with a headphone feature before in my life. These also work for phone calls for me, unlike Bose QC and Sony WH-1000. That combo makes it worth the price for me. When I ordered them I assumed I had a good chance of returning them. Now I can’t imagine not having them with me all the time.
As a Carpenter I’ve been dying for some over the ear noise cancelling. The AirPods Pro were over and above expectations but I miss those drivers. Very very intrigued! My last can phones were jbl synchros s400+bt and I loved them. Touch control, long battery, cable option, great sound for a steal. This price point is staggering but for my circumstances I believe it could be there.
Best review by a long mile! Quite a few reviews have added “Audiophile” in the title without featuring any audiophile detailed content in the review. Thank you for this🙏🏻
Bought the AirPods Max recently (2022) due to very good discounts. Seen many reviews and this is the best one, hands down. I am a mid level audiophile. I have not seen this level of influence software can have on a pair of headphones. (Thanks for pointing out the settings in the Accessibility section - now I can hear the extensions).
I did the same. $100 off on Amazon so finally grabbed a pair. I love them so much once I adjusted the accessability settings and found a good EQ with Apple Music. On my mac it was easier with SoundSource to tune everything. Most comfortable over ear headphones I've had. Finally can wear them for hours at a time.
@@sternkrieger1950 It's personal preference. If you enjoy blown up bass and aren't fussed about getting a true-to-studio sound replication, they're were a good value pair of bluetooth headphones. I own both the XB950BTs and the XB950N1s, and while I have far superior headphones I will often grab the N1s on the way out the door because they're just so much fun.
it isn’t wrong. As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Try putting them in a backpack without that stupid case on and they will be waking up every time you move
Apple really has mastered the art of somehow positioning itself against products that cost less than half as much, and somehow magically managing to come off as the better product.
Well that’s the wrong analogy. A BMW 5 series is twice as expensive as a Toyota Corolla…and it IS the better car. Price typically has a better indicator of quality - you’re talking about ‘value proposition’ wherein if your utility is merely to be able to listen to music with headphones, you don’t need best in class audio - you need a better value. Apple doesn’t compete with Bose or Sony in that sense, Apple makes products to work with its ecosystem better than another vendor can, and as such, prices themselves above competitors because…well because they just integrate and work better. If you want luxury buy Apple or that BMW 5 series, if you want value, buy the Corolla and someone else’s headphones.
@@IUAlum82This is a bad comparison because BMW can be unreliable, and apple products are usually overpriced for what you get. Actually the AirPod max might be the first Apple product that’s better than its competition even if they should be $100 less.
I must be the only one who likes the case. Two reasons: First, I don't have to push the cans all the way up to fit them in the case - so I don't have to re-adjust them to my head every time I take them out. They're right where I left them. Second, I loop them over the handle of my carry-on and then put the case on, so they hang there instead of taking up room inside the bag. And they are still protected from bumps, not hanging there naked as other headphones would be. I much prefer the Apple "diaper" case over the zip-up box of my Bose headphones. But that's just me.
This is the best review of Airpods Max by far. Not just the cans were reviewed, the details on codecs, conversions and wired mode is amazing, provided that people are able to follow that.
@@SajidMahmood-rl5ih I’m gonna go with no. They come into stock every day in stores in the tiniest trickle here in the US. In NYC they are in stock for a couple of minutes out of each day. I can’t imagine any stock is getting through internationally.
I've seen these reviewed on many other channels and am looking forward to doing one as well. Something I haven't seen covered yet which I'd like to touch on is how well these headphones work for business applications. When headsets don't have a USB dongle we've seen many models fail to perform up to our customers standards for their Zoom, Ringcentral, etc. applications. I hope this model performs well in our tests as it looks promising. Thank you for your fantastic review!
Yes, a much better comparison for actual audio... why people buy headphones for features rather than audio quality is beyond me. And on the audio side... I disagree that the px7 are boring... I do have one complaint about them; they are not neutral enough, as compared to the original PX
@@WisteriaBerlitz probably not, I already have a nice pair of IEMs, and I’m not a fan of lightning. Maybe if they release a new version with USB c that’s a bit cheaper!
Watching for a second time because AirPod max are on sale for $399 same price as Sony XM5’s and $50 more then XM4’s. Seeing if I should open & listen or return. I don’t really use headphones because I don’t go out much. AirPod pros for grocery shopping and listen to music in my car so not sure if I should keep them.
This is a great video, the editing is excellent and I trust Quinn's opinion. Many people take themselves too seriously when it comes to audio or don't really review it properly imo (i.e. just compare to the Sony headphones). This review feels beautifully balanced.
£550 is just a bit too much for me to spend on headphones, even Apple ones. I’m really hoping they either release a cheaper model with the same key features but technically reduced specs or just reduce the price a bit. I think I’d be comfortable spending £350 on them and could stretch to £400
@@thebuddercweeper you can occasionally find them on discount brand new below £400 from trusted retailers. However beware of repackaged “brand new sealed” ones on eBay as I had the unfortunate experience of opening the seal and finding a worn set of dodgy AirPods Max. Luckily I had videoed myself opening the package as I had a gut feeling it were dodgy.
Gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Mostly because it was so much more than a product review. Kudos for packing in a heck lot of knowledge into a comprehensive format.
This is the single best review I've ever heard of this product. And thank you for mentioning latency. It makes these unsuitable for studio work...possibly even wired.
a friend lent me a pair and i tried to record and produce with them... not impossible, but you get better headphones e.g. by beyerdynamic or shure for a fraction of the cost. of course, those ones are purpose-built. but as long as we pay the same price when we use dedicated headphones for each usecase and get a better experience out of them, this product will not make any sense to me.
I think this video put it perfectly that for what they are they are REALLY GOOD / the best but when compared to higher end headphones they fall short in SQ.
The think is not that they are the best, they are better than the competición, but cost double the price. So as a consumer, do you prefer a better sound and noice canceling or get something almost as good but half the price... And I don’t mention the price in other regions, in Spain they cost almost 3 times more...
Hey Snazzy, are you telling me these headphones are better than the Audio Technicas ATH-DSR9BT? I have tried EVERY high end Bluetooth set out there, every year I buy, return or resale the new releases, and NOT ONE comes close to the DSR9BT in fidelity and reproduction over Bluetooth with their fully digital drives and aptx-hd. Funny enough, they do not sound their best when paired with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. To get the best out of them, I need to pair them with my Pixel 5. Every time I hear the explanation for why Apple sticks to AAC, I can’t help but shake my head. If you have access to the audio technicas, I’d love to hear your input.
These just don't seem to know what they want to be: a traveler's delight or an audiophile's go to, and they don't do a particularly good job at either. I have no doubt that they sound great, but the way that they are packaged, it just doesn't seem realistic to be able to use these without hitting irritating hassles on a frequent basis. Not overly in love with my XM4s sound signature, but I love the fit, battery life, USB-C, etc. Price isn't too much of a deterrent for me, it just makes it easier to say pass. I think even for $400, I'd turn them down. Great review btw Quinn. Cool to see the cameo from the Miss
I got my pair & I’m really happy with them. I’m not super experienced with audio gear and I’m deep into the Apple ecosystem (developer). Love the integration & they sound great to me.
@@mikldude9376 not really. If it works and sounds well for the target consumer and they are willing to pay the asking price, what exactly is there more to it?
Significantly better than yours especially your outrageous conclusion that the Sony XM4 was better. Ridiculous! Snazzy’s conclusions were reasonable and fair. His review is among the best that I’ve seen especially coming from an audiophile. This man knows his stuff.

Funnily enough, a lot of people don't talk about how at 500$, you can get an xm4 for portable wireless listening and a good set of $200$ wired headphones for home studio and listening and beat all of the bluetooth headphones out there (hd6xx, hd58x, he5xx/4xx, akg 361, shp9600 etc.)
Finally bought them this week after months of trying to justify the cost, spent the day ‘tubing’ it around London before jumping on a 7 hour flight home! Best thing I’ve bought in years, wouldn’t class myself as an ‘audiophile’ but music has always been my life, almost all genres, can’t get through a day without at least 50% of it spend listening to tunes old and new. The sound quality is incredible (for my needs) and the noise cancellation on underground and planes just blew me away. As I type my wife is in the next room ‘cackling’ away on the phone with a friend- did I mention the noise cancelling is incredible? 😉
I bought AirPods Max to replace my aging Beats Solo 2 wireless headphones. They're really comfy, but my one gripe with them is that I wear glasses, and if I want that comfiness I have to take my glasses off and put them back on at a slightly odd angle. I had to do these with the Beats too, but since those had smaller cups, my glasses weren't at an odd angle. Despite that, they sound very nice, and the ANC works pretty well to keep out the whirring of my refrigerator and air conditioner when I'm wearing them. I also have the cord to make them wired, but I mostly use that to connect to devices that don't support bluetooth audio, such as my Nintendo Switch. When watching a movie on my iPhone one day, I *DID* notice the whole "headphones treat iPhone as sound source" function the headphones did. I turned away for a moment to wash my dishes, slowly realizing I was hearing the sound more in one ear than the other. I turned the other way when I noticed this and heard more sound from the other ear. I was rather amused that the headphones were capable of doing that.
Chiming in three years later to notice that I left this video unfinished from the last time I tuned in, so I started over. Just got a used pair of blue AirPods Max for like $255 plus tax from someone on eBay who I don’t care to bother about why they were selling them. I’m loving them very much. Excellent condition, despite having to rename them on pairing, and not having the original box, the setup was a breeze though. I also have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM4s, and unlike these, they were purchased new. Within a year or two, the hinge on the right ear cup snapped in half, and now they’re held together with a huge mess of duct tape and some bent wire coathanger I formed into a support frame. Not the best vote of confidence, and not the first time I’ve had plastic Sony cans break after a while, regardless of price.
I have been waiting for someone who cares and knows something about audio to talk about these things. I think you nailed with the "they are in no-mans-land".
I got a pair of AirPods Max today and I've had the DT 1990 as headphones for years. I thought the AirPods were broken because of how dark they sounded like the Beyers but little by little I started to appreciate them. Thanks for your video

I just did a road-trip from the Netherlands to Germany wearing the Max, ANC was great without any glitches.
Finally someone talking about the Codecs Apple uses!
Great job all in all.
This makes pretty much every other Airpods max review feel amateurish

Other than that, 10/10
@@aDistantLight Well, you can… but you’re swapping better ANC in exchange for an almost objectively worse pair of sounding headphones.
Congratulations on the first pair of headphones you own.
@@joep7586 lol for convenience I would rather have a wired iem.

@@stevemajors3152 Hello. Same! Any updates?
@@SimonT54 I’m not an audiophile but the sound quality is certainly premium, and the anc and transparent feel seriously luxurious. I do prep work in a kitchen and sometimes get to listen to podcasts, and going from paused in transparency to listening in noise cancelation, feels like walking into a movie, as the background noise fades away nearly completely.

Saying this as an owner of XM4s, I feel that the XM4s are 80% good enough for me, and that the massive price premium is not worth it.

Lighter and amazing drivers for a cheaper price.

2:50 snazzy’s audition tape

This was an extremely impressive overview. Great job Snazzy!!
My thoughts exactly! Incredible

This is the single best review I've ever heard of this product. And thank you for mentioning latency. It makes these unsuitable for studio work...possibly even wired.
a friend lent me a pair and i tried to record and produce with them... not impossible, but you get better headphones e.g. by beyerdynamic or shure for a fraction of the cost. of course, those ones are purpose-built. but as long as we pay the same price when we use dedicated headphones for each usecase and get a better experience out of them, this product will not make any sense to me.
i love how you seamlessly integrate your sponsors into your video. good job.

Oh no, another LTT-like ad segue.
"Transparency mode."
Phew!
The amount of information in this review is just...MINDBLOWING
0:00 - 0:14 Not too sure what you're saying here, but an audiophile is someone who has an appreciation, and keen ears for sound.

Last time I was this early, Quinn had a beard
Waiting for the Apple press release: “AirPods Max aren’t uncomfortable; you’re wearing them wrong.”
“AirPods Max aren’t uncomfortable; your head shape is wrong.”
I've seen the makers of the THX Panda say that for real lol. "Move the band forward on your head so it's flat" and so forth.

In my opinion this is one of the best reviews on youtube. The review I was waiting for. Thank you.
