Iv had mine on my 2016 for about 55k miles and still works amazing never any problems and keeps my carven competitor series exhaust sounding like a beast no more puttering in 4cyl mode like a honda. I installed a peddle commander and Airaid cold air intake around the same time for even better throttle response and driving it still amazes me every time.
First, thank you for your service to our country. Second, I am aware this is an old vid but a very helpful one as I am purchasing a used Silverado 1500 with 60k miles on it. I will definitely invest into one of these Range AFM plug ins, although it is up in price to $220 as of 1/3/2022, I think it is well worth it. Thanks again, thumbs up.
Just got mine in yesterday for my 2018 4x LT and I am ready install and take it for drive. I am the same as you, love my Silverado, but that AFM 4 CYL mode is maddening. 25000 miles later.
Just got one for my 2020 silverado. Honestly the best $200 spent on the truck. It drives night and day different. My wife noticed the difference in the passenger seat. No shudder from dropping cylinders no clunking, instant power no hesitation. Love it.
I got the same truck. 2020 ltz. Mine came in today. How can you tell when it switches from v4 to v8? Or in this case how can you tell it stays on v8? I see older trucks it shows on the bottom right where it says 4”v4 or v8 thanks!
Best move you ever made, I deleted it on my 17 High Country 6.2L when it left the dealer 3 years ago and haven't looked back. MPG hasn't changed worth talking about. Never had any issues with the battery going dead it sits idle months at a time. Range fixed this issue several years ago.
I ordered one a couple days ago. Came in today. The box says to not leave it plugged in if its not on a daily driver vehicle since some vehicles might draw power and eventually kill the battery
I have a 2020 LTZ with the 5.3L V-8 and 8 speed auto. It has DFM instead of AFM, which means it may be running on a variable number of cylinders, all the way down to one. I recently discovered that if I drive with the transmission in L7 it does not shut off any cylinders. GM did a good job of implementing the DFM, but the truck is still noticeably smoother and more responsive with all the cylinders running. I enjoy driving it even more with such a superb V-8.
I have one of these plugged in for about 40K miles, no problems at all and I don't use any oil between changes. Well worth it, and it's easy to use and you can reverse it any time you like by just pulling it out of the port.
That’s the first thing any knowledgeable GM truck owner does. I bought my 16’ new and had a Ranger ordered in the first week of ownership. I haven’t really noticed a marked decline in gas mileage. Fact is I got back from a 500 mile road trip and was rolling at 80 most the way. Arriving back home I noticed my mileage average as 26 mpg. (5.3 L) Don’t blame GM, their just responding to the governments stupid Cafe Standards. Kinda tuff when you sell more Trucks than Econo boxes.
Thanks for the in-depth explanation. Just test drove 2 Silverado's and thought they had either a trans problem or crapping power from slow speeds. After watching this I am now going to re roadtest one of them to see if it's because it's bouncing between V4 and V8. I would think GM would want you to have all power from a take off or slow roll but all this economy crap now, we'll see later today lol. Thanks again. If I buy a Silverado or Sierra this will be the first upgrade I do lol.
To test the truck and disable the AFM you can put it in M5 and see how it drives. That’s an option to disable without buying the range. I just like the ease of getting in the truck and going without having to tinker with buttons every time I drive the truck. Hope the test drive goes well!
@@jakeniteasy7909 Yeah, I learned about the putting it in manual mode. That is exactly what I will be doing. I was very disappointed when I drove both trucks for the first time but after learning about this stupid V4 mode I now know what to look for lol. I know this 355 HP 5.3 has to be better than my 2008 5.4 triton V8 Ford. Thanks for the tips, hope my drive goes well also as I'm ready for a newer truck.
I’ve had one on my 2011 Sierra now for 1500 miles, my only disappointment is I didn’t buy it in 2015 when I bought the truck, my average mpg in mixed driving has gone from 13.5 to 14.6. The truck is no longer sluggish either. Well worth the money.
First, thank you for your service! Second: I just bought a 2011 Z71 last Friday. I've wanted one for a long time. It has 106k on it, but it's in great shape. I'll be ordering one of these very soon. Boy, that 5.3 ain't not slouch! I'm not quite used to it yet. Me and the wifey were heading home from the Walmarts the other day and it had just started raining. We came out of the parking lot sideways. The thing rides like a Caddie, and other than the 4 to 8 cylinder switch lag, she gets up and GOES! It has some very new Cooper Discovery tires on it. It looks like it was very well cared for. No ticking, cold or hot, she's as quiet as a church mouse (that may change in the future, if you know what I mean.) Quiet going down the highway, other than the tires singing. We are super happy with it. We live out in the boonies a mile down a private dirt road (that is not maintained by the county) that's pretty rough, we truly needed a good 4x4.
I’m a big fan of the cooper discoveries, I recently put nitto ridge grapplers on my old girl and I can’t complain about those either… beside being pricey lol
Installed a Range on 2017 Sierra 5.3. Had been having P0300 cold idle problems. Problems dissapeared! Also, I have left it plugged in for two weeks at a time, No noticable battery drain.👍
Around town, at slow highway speeds, and while towing, I leave my gear selector in M5. This disables AMF while giving you 5 forward gears. Works exactly the same a having the truck in drive just makes my truck a 5 speed instead of a 6.
I do the same thing. I originally did get the range, but found out M5 would do the same thing. So I have it in M5 driving through city/country roads and put it back in drive during highway driving.
@@davidcaskey4669 yeah I ended up buying it and it works but then it started making my training shift hard into third gear and shift hard when it was downshifting and then almost like slicking so I stopped using it and I just run in M5 and then when I hit the interstate I put it into M6 and then when I want to go back to M5 it's just I cycle between M5 and M6 now it's just better it runs the weights supposed to be driven now you know instead of using that thing maybe it's something else but ever since I unplugged that this AFM disabler and my truck shifts good again
Jake, just some added info, as I have put a Range AFM disabler on my 2017 Silverado 5.3 V8. (1) in NC, my truck would not be ready for the state emissions inspection while running the Range. I had to remove it a few day before so it could go through cold start & other cycles to be ready to pass. (2) OnStar can NOT read you ECU to let you know if there's any issues with the truck & it shows up on my monthly report. No big deal for me, but just letting you know. BTW, I love the results of my Range AFM disabler.
It worked fine for me at first. But after several months it slowly started caused my truck to run like absolute crap and the transmission to shift very aggressively, one time to where it shut the truck off while coming to a stop.
Should I delete the AFM/DOD? I just purchased a 2012 Silverado 1500 5.3 with 120K miles -- It is a very clean truck that I believe was well maintained. Would you suggest I get a RANGE Technologies disable plug in OB2? Will the fact that these 5.3 with AFM have higher pressure oil pump cause issues and perhaps create excessive oil burning if the Disable device is used? Also would you recommend installing an OIL Catch Can along with a Range OB2 device?
I have a 2018 Silverado LT with low mileage (34000) and I just purchased one of the AFM/DOD disablers and I hope it stops just exactly what you have described. Wish me luck! I did check out one video that said he was just putting the truck in 5th gear on an old 6 speed trans and it disables it also. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for the video dude.
IF YOU WANT A CHEAP, FAST, EASY, FIX PUT THE TRUCK IN "L" OR "M" FOR MANUAL. SHIFT IT TO L5 AND LEAVE IT THERE. THIS DISABLES V4 MODE. Obviously it's not permanent but it does help if you're going around town and don't want the v4. If you shift it into L6 it will go into V4 mode.
mine too on the hybrid I get 20MPG in the city with M4 v8 mode(6.0L) but with the Overdrive gear sun gear (EVT) I could get 25mpg in the city (using the pulse and glide technique ) (i.e the engine rpm is not married to the transmission) as it will coast much much longer then the M4 . M4 has engine braking which slows you down there by "wasting gas".. also the RPM is much higher M4 RPM at 40MPH is 1500 rpm V8 EVT2 overdrive at 40mph is 1,000 rpm V8 That means an increase of fuel efficacy of 50%
I’ve never had any hesitation when my engine goes from 8 to 4 to 8 No vibration no hesitation no transmission noises It is literally not noticeable. 2010 Cadillac Escalade with 6.2 L 400hp.
Same here..like the truck but HATE the afm. I plan on getting the disabler but not until my truck is out of warranty. On the highway the AFM doesn’t bother me all that much so I always put the truck in drive (D) but for any around town driving or slower highways where it’s traffic light the traffic light I just put the truck in L5. It still pushes low RPMs and keeps it in V8 mode. My fuel mileage hasn’t changed. The truck drives completely different in L5 or maybe on earlier years M5.
Just a heads up, this does not void your warranty. I bought mine in 2018 fully aware of my warranty. I want to enjoy driving my truck. If you want to trade your vehicle in, take the range AFM disabler out, and it cannot be seen by any of their computers. I recently went to a Chevy dealer thinking about buying a 2500hd and they took a thorough look at the truck and had no issues.
I have a 2018 5.3 4x4 and I have not noticed an mpg increase. It's lifted, so there's that, and I'm running Pedal Commander in Sport mode most of the time. But it's not about that, it's like a lot of others are saying... It's about using all them cylinders. I paid for 8, I want to use all 8. And I agree about it being a fav truck. I don't want the newer ones with auto stop start and who knows what else. Only thing better would be the 6.2...
So do y’all think that one could leave one of these in for 10 years, or more so a bandaid until you actually drop the afm? Just picked up a 15 LTZ with 100k on it
Iv'e had my range for 3 months now and my tranny shifts and downshifts smoothly, no clunks. I have also read but not tried that you can put the gear shifter in L and bump it to 5 and the transmission wont go into V4 mode.
I have a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 Lt and I have the 6 speed automatic transmission and if I put it in L5 it stays in V8 mode it bypasses the V8 to V4 back and forth modes it works for me so I’d give it a try man
If you want a fast and free way to fix it, put the truck in L mode (the one past D for drive) and shift it up to L5. This disables v4 mode. If you put it in L6 v4 mode will come on. This isn't permanent but it's FREE.
This doesn’t affect your tow haul mode. The m5 for me was extremely annoying to constantly have to remember to do. Honestly slapping this Range in your truck is the easiest way to make your truck drive right.
When the Range is connected ... and you press the gas ... does your Range light change? and when you brake it returns to normal? I bought one and turned on the last light and when I accelerated it turns on the full bar, I brake and the corner light remained, I accelerated and turned on all the light of the range again
I use this one on my 2011 chevy camaro SS. Everything is smooth but sometimes transmission logics is very strange. For example after aggressive acceleration and removing leg from the gas pedal....Can this device be alternative for DOD/ADM delete kit?
Saves your lifters too. This is why im getting a range for my avalanche my favorite truck ever produced. Get rid of AFM with range to save your engine and cost you 3k or more in repairs
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS AFM DISABLER CRAP. It messed up my smog check today. 2 stations keep getting REJECTED RESULT due to the computer not be able to read.. BE CAREFUL OF THIS CRAP
Thanks for vid. Might have just talked me into buying one. Also interested in a pedal commander for better throttle response. Something to look into if you haven't done it yet.
I got the new Range DFM (2020) disabler for my '19 Silverado 5.3 V8. So much better now. Never drops a cylinder. With the DFM disabler, my auto Start/Stop was eliminated as well which is an added bonus. I had a Pedal Commander and I'd recommend the Sprint Booster V3 over it.
I have a 2018 crew cab z71 Sierra 5.3 and get 19-20 in town and 23-24 highway at 65mph,,if I cruise at 55 I get 30-31 between austin to Dallas completely stock except for k&n air filter
After installing the range on my 2015 Silverado it went from 14.5 to 12 mpg in town, work it’s 53 miles and Im only getting 17 on the hwy before was 20/21 my only mods are caí and muffler delete.
I just installed one of these on my 2016 GMC Sierra, the LED stays solid while driving but when I am at a stop and my foot is on the brake, one of the LED lights flashes. Does this happen in your vehicle as well?
@@kevinbarbaria9283 Your welcome, going to call them Monday myself, tried a few minutes ago and was closed. I'd heard they sometimes need updating and you have to send them in. That's one of my questions.
Apparently on Trailblazers you can unplug the brake booster sensor... it won't affect anything else, and it will throw your check engine light on, but it supposedly disables the AFM. Didn't work on my Sierra 5.3L... but Trailblazer owners have said it works.
This has, and still is, driving me crazy with my 2014 Sierra. To the point that it should almost be recalled. I mean how dangerous are these trucks that when you put your foot into the pedal the truck sits and contemplates its existence while an 18 wheeler is bearing down on you. Yeah, its only momentary, but its enough to be unsafe. Thank for the tip.
Just had my engine replaced at 102,000 AFM engineering destroyed the valves, cam etc. Ask any mechanic? Gm should have a recall and pay the poor folks who had to spend a fortune to repair their bad engineering. I’m out $5100
@jakeniteasy you clearly didn't do enough research nor talk to a tech guy nor talk to a Mechanic nor did you read the owners manual. All you have to do is put it in toe / Trailer mode to stop it from switching into v4 . You'd save yourself $200
Wow this is the first time I’ve ever heard about this. Maybe I should have done research, talked to a tech guy nor did I read the owners manual then I would have known all I have to do is put it in tow / trailer mode to stop it from switching into v4. So I bought a 2018 Tahoe. The first two months it was perfect. Then it had a communication error and it stalled. The dealership ran a program update. But every since I got it back I’m constantly feeling like a hesitation when accelerating. When I press the gas nothing happens. I have to wait a few seconds then it will speed up. I have to slam on the gas the truck will lurch forward and then go. Could this be related to afm?
That’s exactly how my truck would act. I bought the range and it’s a whole new truck, I also bought a pedal commander I’ll do a video for that when I’m able to.
@@jakeniteasy7909 did you notice the problem right away when you bought the truck? I think its strange that for me the problem only started after I got it back from the dealership? I never noticed any hesitation the first two months of owning it. There was also a previous owner. I wonder if the program update they ran could of changed something?
Those chevys are nice but if you drove the ford or the Nissan you might like the power. The coyote And Nissan V8 leave the GM 5.3 in the dust. My girl had a lifter issue with her Tahoe last week. We got lucky as the lifter freed itself. I told her not to drive it again until the range came in. She used my Titan for a couple of days. She fell in love with the power. There is no such thing as an American truck anymore. GM 1/2 ton crew cabs are built in MEXICO.
Tundra is built in usa and toyota creates thousands of jobs to Americans. Chevy trucks are built in Mexico. Maybe do some research before making comments like these.

@@jakeniteasy7909Thanks, I have a 2015 LTZ. Will definitely be purchasing this!
Thank you for your service #salute
Get a room.
I have one and it works great..
Totally agree… pedal commander is awesome too
Disappointing that it kills the battery, is it because of the light?
@@wlc1980 I believe so but I’m not 100% sure
So do y’all think that one could leave one of these in for 10 years, or more so a bandaid until you actually drop the afm? Just picked up a 15 LTZ with 100k on it
Mines been installed since 2018 without an issue.
@@jakeniteasy7909 awesome. Thank you
Very helpful information!!
Is this the southwest speed brand by Holley part # RET-RA003B. ??
I have it & don't regret it. The cylinder drooping crap will grenade your engine.
Iv'e had my range for 3 months now and my tranny shifts and downshifts smoothly, no clunks. I have also read but not tried that you can put the gear shifter in L and bump it to 5 and the transmission wont go into V4 mode.
I'm getting maybe 16mpg on the highway, how are you all getting so much better gas mileage? I have a 2014 Silverado with 70k
Thank you for your service!
I have a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 Lt and I have the 6 speed automatic transmission and if I put it in L5 it stays in V8 mode it bypasses the V8 to V4 back and forth modes it works for me so I’d give it a try man
Wish I would have known this before I got the lifter noise.
I've been contemplating this item for awhile now. Does it change anything when you put truck in tow/haul mode?
If you want a fast and free way to fix it, put the truck in L mode (the one past D for drive) and shift it up to L5. This disables v4 mode. If you put it in L6 v4 mode will come on. This isn't permanent but it's FREE.
Also, it's in the owners manual.
@@ScottyBGaming239 Yeah I put it in M5 a lot but it would be nice to have 6th gear.
This doesn’t affect your tow haul mode. The m5 for me was extremely annoying to constantly have to remember to do. Honestly slapping this Range in your truck is the easiest way to make your truck drive right.
Does the Range void warranty ?
Is this still working for you ?
I bought the range knock off brand off ebay and it works amazing for $70 what's odd it looks exactly like the range but without the label...lol
Ra003?
I wonder if it would work on the 2022 .? Thanks
When the Range is connected ... and you press the gas ... does your Range light change? and when you brake it returns to normal? I bought one and turned on the last light and when I accelerated it turns on the full bar, I brake and the corner light remained, I accelerated and turned on all the light of the range again
Can I save 200 n just put in m5
I use this one on my 2011 chevy camaro SS. Everything is smooth but sometimes transmission logics is very strange. For example after aggressive acceleration and removing leg from the gas pedal....Can this device be alternative for DOD/ADM delete kit?
Saves your lifters too. This is why im getting a range for my avalanche my favorite truck ever produced. Get rid of AFM with range to save your engine and cost you 3k or more in repairs
Do you have to unplug this before you get emissions done? So they won’t say anything
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS AFM DISABLER CRAP. It messed up my smog check today. 2 stations keep getting REJECTED RESULT due to the computer not be able to read.. BE CAREFUL OF THIS CRAP
Did you get misfire codes ?
Great video 👍👍👍
I bought a used 07 Silverado the other day and i see on my dash its in v8 mode and it stays there no matter how i drive do you know a reason for that
I have no idea maybe the afm was disabled permanently?? 🤔
Thanks for vid. Might have just talked me into buying one. Also interested in a pedal commander for better throttle response. Something to look into if you haven't done it yet.
GOlllPACKlllGO thanks for your comment, I’ve thought about getting the pedal commander too.
1234 86 I do not have the lifter tick I have the usual injector tick. I’ll do another video about the pedal commander.
Damn that's pretty good. Ima texas man as well. Thinking about k&n air filter also. I have 1 in 2 out exhaust
After installing the range on my 2015 Silverado it went from 14.5 to 12 mpg in town, work it’s 53 miles and Im only getting 17 on the hwy before was 20/21 my only mods are caí and muffler delete.
I have a 14 Silverado that gets maybe 16mpg on the highway, how are all of you getting so much better gas mileage?
The 2007 with 6.0L has a 4 speed auto and does not seem as likely to hunt between gears.
I just installed one of these on my 2016 GMC Sierra, the LED stays solid while driving but when I am at a stop and my foot is on the brake, one of the LED lights flashes. Does this happen in your vehicle as well?
Range has a 800 number, give them a call.
@@dennydeckerful will do, appreciate the response.
@@kevinbarbaria9283 Your welcome, going to call them Monday myself, tried a few minutes ago and was closed. I'd heard they sometimes need updating and you have to send them in. That's one of my questions.
will it work with my 4.3
I just got one of these I have a 07 Silverado and it was doing the same thing until I got that range AFM disabler
Hows it been? I have an 07 and thinking of getting one.
New range won’t kill the battery. Remember to take it out weeks before you get emission test!
Didn't work at all on my 05 Trailblazer. Customer service told me to return it to Amazon, they coudn't help me.
Apparently on Trailblazers you can unplug the brake booster sensor... it won't affect anything else, and it will throw your check engine light on, but it supposedly disables the AFM. Didn't work on my Sierra 5.3L... but Trailblazer owners have said it works.
@@cwnicholas5333 I ended up doing that. It seems to work. Runs great when it's cold, but when the oil heats up it's missing on acceleration.
Will this work on the 2021 Silverado 1500
I believe they do make a dfm disabler you can input your vehicle information on Amazon and it will tell you if it fits or not.
This actually happened to me in my Saab 97 with the 5.3 almost got rear ended until it realized "hey he's pressing the gas"
Does it help with the oil flow, no dirty plugs?
You need an oil catch can for that. It keeps the excess oil out of the intake. Just have to remember to drain it every oil change.
Is that thing legal in CA?
Cuauhtemoc Cardenas as far as I know it doesn’t change any emissions, it barely even decreases your avg fuel economy.
Is anything?
Ha! your in the wrong state, the only thing legal there is oppression and obscene taxes to the residents
I got one for my 2017 Corvette.
That’s insane that corvettes have AFM
You mentioned something about the front suspension ?
Thank you for taking time out of your obviously busy day to inform me!
By the way in tow / trailer mode it still jumps into v4, putting it in m5 keeps it in v8 mode. But thanks anyway 😎
This video got me to buy this Range. Just got myself a 2016 Silverado z71 83k miles and I’m hating the AFM so thanks for the review
What issues did you experience?
❤️❤️
I need this..NOW😭!!!!
No product available yet for 2022.
Jesus don’t do a video next to a wind chime bro!
I hate the hesitation feeling lol like bitch move!!! I just bought me one of those range tech 👍🏼
@@francescad5525 took me a few months to notice, I assume it was just getting used to how it drove.
Good review thanks bro
I was just gonna rip that shit out of my truck and cam it but this will hold
Me over while I do the other shit I wanna do first
If u install dual exhaust u need this
When I got my truck I called around and got my afm turned off for 50$
Who and how did they do that?
Can you switch it to V4 mode only
Those chevys are nice but if you drove the ford or the Nissan you might like the power.
Not all built in Mexico, my 2020 Silverado was built in Ft Wayne Indiana.
That hesitation sounds pretty dangerous you don't restrict a V8 GM should be sued before this
I'm spending 150 at a transmission shop to disable that feature
Put the truck in L and shift it into L5 and it disables v4 mode. if you go to L6 then v4 mode will come on.
@@ScottyBGaming239 who the hell wants to do that all the time? Nice trick, stupid suggestion.
THANCS-----4 SUPPORTING THE AMER. CAR COMP.......NOT TUNDRA-TITEN;YOU HAVE A BACBONE!!!GOOD JOB!!
scott barker hooyah brother I’ll buy American as long as I’m alive 🤙🏻
awkward moment when tundra is more American than Ford and Chevy. bbrrrrrrrrr
Tundra is built in usa and toyota creates thousands of jobs to Americans. Chevy trucks are built in Mexico. Maybe do some research before making comments like these.
