It wasn't until this mask wearing time that I realize how much I was using lip reading to help me hear. My 2nd language is ASL. I wonder how my Deaf friends feel about the masks as they interact with the hearing. Last night, I saw them organizing a No Masks day. Now, it makes sense.
Southern Latitudes I cannot process spoken words without seeing lips move. Oddly, though, I don’t have a problem processing what I hear in an audiobook. I understand exactly what you mean!
Like Jennifer commented. I do the same. My first thought when masks went mandatory was what about the lip readers? I need to see moving lips to understand what I am hearing. Weird I know. Hopefully masks will not be mandatory much longer.
Southern Latitudes yep. There's light at the end if the tunnel. I don't wear masks. I'm seeing a few others slowly waking up and doing the same. I'm not deaf but I know what you mean about needing lip reading. It's difficult for me to comprehend what people are saying when they're wearing masks bc I can't see the moment of their lips and or facial expressions. Mask wearing is a con. It's a big lie. We're standing up for our rights. No masks!!!!!
Well 7 months late but still in crazy mask world. I have MS and no hearing in one ear with difficulty in the other. Ive adapted over the years to read lips and sign as it occurred slowly over time. However I never realized how much I read lips and body language to communicate until the masks. Frankly it gets really frustrating bc I just can’t understand or hear what is being said most of the time. It’s gotten so upsetting at times I just give up. I’m a very personable and talkative person so it’s been really hard because I’ve basically stopped talking. I’ve noticed myself intentionally avoiding communicating in person. I just don’t want to try after almost a year of this its not worth the frustration and emotional turmoil that occurs when I do. I don’t think people realize how detrimental this is to our personal interactions & connections. Plus peoples body language is off because no one is comfortable. I just pray we will be free of the masks soon.
In a while we will know why we are being told to be less human to one another. The violence younger generations have been trained to do is already showing.
I still freak out when I see masked people everywhere. It is like a dystopian film. As Mark says, we are hard-wired to read and recognize facial gestures and react accordingly. I have to accept that I have also been avoiding eye contact, I will make an effort to act differently. I love the idea of the photo badge, I will try it soon. I have always worked in hospitality so smiles have always been part of my normal life. Thanks for the vídeo, I will use as training material for my team.
I'm genuinely surprised how far I had to scroll down before I came across a video discussing this topic. Something that weighs heavy on my heart all the time surrounding these masks. I'm afraid not a lot of people realize the damaging effect it's having on us physically + mentally
I finally learned what modern art is good for! Face framing. 🤣 Thank you Mark! You have a unique ability to cheer people up just by watching you when you are 'on.' 😁👍
Here in Australia, it has been fascinating to note the difference in how we are relating to each other. During and after the terror of the bushfires, just before covid, people were hugging each other, chatting and listening to strangers as well as family and friends, comparing war stories etc. Now, even a shopping trip is filled with fear and suspicion as we eye each other as 'threats' to our health. Few people are wearing masks, but the negativity is contagious even if Australia has managed to contain the virus fairly well. Sadly, a rush by our politicians to open up the economy too quickly, will probably undo a lot of the good isolating has done.
Great video Mark and much needed in today’s upside down world. Love the way you explain technical to simplified situations in everyday life. You ROCK❣️🌻 love the Behavioral Panel vids too 🤯
Great ideas and really interesting comments. Wearing a mask in public spaces is a legal requirement in South Africa and probably a key cost effective tool as Third wave hits and delay in vaccine rollout persists. Isolation often seems preferable: I hate the way my glasses fog up! But getting places and being with people is so crucial - walking two terriers even more so - so I mask up partly to avoid arrest or fine and partly because I can claim no medical condition that prohibits my doing my bit to reduce transmission. Has had some interesting results: made me aware of making more of an effort to engage at checkout counters or with strangers. Also made me much more sensitive to the eyes of other people! Curiously seems to have promoted connection and goodwill. Perhaps a greater sense of experiencing a shared if uncommon condition. Your videos are great! Happy to be considered a fan😎
I've noticed something different when I wear one. I tighten up and feel uptight. I don't know why either. Idk if it's because I can't see as well and have to look down
I 100% understand that. I am so tense and stress filled when wearing a amsk. I also find i am making and holding eye contact longer. Maybe in an effort to have human connection that is normally a smile with a lil head nod. It is like I am saying I see you, hello!
That’s understandable, it’s not normal for us to be wearing masks all the time- especially healthy people. They call this the new normal - yes this is new, but definitely not normal @ all. Stay well. :)
As a woman with Aspergers and a mom of two teens who have Autism, I cannot hear someone unless I can see their mouth move. I suppose it ‘s a processing issue more than a literal hearing issue. I cannot wear a mask because: 1. I am an American - and as such I will not be compelled to do so; and 2. I have horrible sensory issues which precludes covering my nose and mouth. This mask nonsense has caused considerable trauma to the Autism community. Eye contact won’t help.
I believe reason #2 is more reasonable than your #1 reason. Science is not nationality biased. Anyone can catch the virus, and these two experts give simple and common advice to make our lives easier.
Jennifer-- excellent comment. I, too, am disturbed, physically, mentally, emotionally, and psychologically, by masks. I will not wear a mask! Plus, I agree, I'm American. I'm supposed to be free?!?!🇺🇸
Mark - how do you think tele work at home is affecting us. We have been doing some work at home and not all great. Seems people are a little snerky and distrustful.
Great video Mark. I had been pondering this question myself. I was in Spain this summer in a big queue with every one in masks except one attractive lady with bright red lips. I realised that I was staring at her and looking around realised I was not the only one. I think there is another video to be made on this subject (the effect of masks on mammalian mating rituals) :) You seem to be spending a lot of time in Canada these days.
It's done just wonders for me as a lip reader I can just ignore people. Not bother answering. Then I ended up having a heart attack by not being able to breathe.
Well I've learned that a lot of people have a problem with adaptation. People freak out instead of being creative and thinking of something to overcome problems. I made my own masks with cute prints to liven up the dread. The masks weren't going to be around forever anyway.
Oddly enough, it doesn't bother me at all when people wear masks. I am hyper sensitive to every signal around me (ADHD), and I'm often overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people's non-verbal communication, as I tend to subconsciously be alert and keep track of it all. People wearing masks therefore puts me at ease, as it's less stressful for me. I like it when they wear personalised masks or themed masks. It's just an acessory to showcase some part of ypur personality, like glasses. No need to wear bog standard "Zombie Apocalypse" face masks. Just wear something that makes people smile! 😸
I wonder how the masking will change the mental state of our next generations. I know my neighbors 9 month panics and cries out when people outside of her family take off their masks.
Hi, Mark, Kelly Saran here from the university of Michigan. This is excellent. I’m doing a presentation for healthcare providers and execs next fall on meeting with patients and families when there are adverse outcomes. We are meeting on zoom and with masks, of course. I’d like permission to use your clip. Can we chat? Ksaran@med.umich.edu. Btw, I love you on the behavior panel!
I like wearing mask. I feel that people are braver to look at each other now - I live in Germany where people don’t look at each other normally. With masks on people look at me and others more, which to me feels nice. We are paying attention to each other more and it is nice to realise that after all humans are not as withdrawn as I thought.
In America, people are much more withdrawn and weary of their neighbors when wearing masks. It's like everyone's a bank robber or something on the psyche.
@@c.c.8902 Yeah it's the same here in Aus- especially where I live, where masks have been made compulsory ( the entire state, even the rural areas with ridiculously low population :/ ). I cannot wait for it to all be over.

It is the right word

Masking has stolen from us one of the most healing actions of humankind - smiles.
Social distancing even more - handshakes and hugs.
By design.
“Handshakes, hugs
You wanna see me outside, see me with pancakes and drugs.. “
Makes me feel like I cant think clearly, almost physically off balance
I tend to have uncontrolable fits of laughter at times and wearing a mask makes me feel less conscious about them happening 😅
Haha, I like you! 🥳
Better idea than the badges... not wearing a mask
This is why I pull it down when trying to communicate if the other person is comfortable with it
Why do I feel over heated when I wear a mask? At times I can hardly wear it.
