Budget Overland Tundra Update Walkaround and Camp Setup

- its time to finally show you what has gone into this budget built trd offroad tundra. ive spent the last two years trying to build a functional overland vehicle to get out and explore on what i consider a budget. not only is this a build walkaround, but im going through step by step as to how i get camp set up. this is a great video for beginner overlanders to get an idea of what will get you out on the trail and having a blast. i also finally get around to doing a full walkthrough of the flippac camper.
Refreshing to see a video for regular people that isnt trying to sell a bunch of overpriced sponsored items. Great inspiration for my Tundra build, thanks
Thanks for watching man. I feel disingenuous trying to sell BS products that I wouldn’t use in the first place. Keep it simple
Best real world build walk-around I've seen in a long, long time.
Shoot thank you that really means alot
Dude you aren't an Overlander, you're real off-road explorer. Got exactly what ya need, nothing you don't 100 - Those Tundras are strong rig too. Shoutout to the White Dog
That’s a winning comment right there my man, appreciate that recognition a lot. I try to stray from the norm of this niche so when people pick up on that it makes me happy
I always thought I was the only person who didn’t need all that junk that other channels promote I am very basic my ancestors traveled on horse back with dried meat an arrows and a long gun 😂😂
I've been taking fresh fruit, potatoes, carrots, and onions, and never needed a refrigerator.
Sameeee. Got rid of my roof top and invested that in a awning, a gazelle, and a small Amazon special awning shower room for the wife.
Still have plenty of money left over from selling my RTT and was looking at the roam until buddy said they’re goofy 😂
absolutely love this video - great setup you have there. minimalism is where it's at. "Overlanding" has became a game of who can bring the most sh|t-you-will-never-need out on the trails.
Forsure, it’s about products now not experiences. Kinda sad but I think it’s only a small minority with these over done vehicles.
I love how simple you keep your camping set up/gear. Love your videos bro! Keep it up✌🏼😬
Less is more as they say!
Very informative video. I like your budget mods and common sense approach, as far as what works for you.
I like the way your set up. It gives me an idea or two for the rare times when I stay out overnight. I turned 70 last week so it's more difficult to offroad, but sometimes I just have to grit my teeth & do it.
Budget. Couldn’t agree more. Buy within your means and make it work. Have fun, I have bought a lot of equipment to make it more enjoyable for my Wife and she likes going too. Great video. The guitar is a must.
Love the build. Just picked myself up a double cab tundra after years with a 4runner.
So much better going full size, you’ll never regret that switch
Great job on the history of your former truck's son. Should have kept that little red Taco great little truck. Another awesome job of filming. Love you Pops!!
This is the first video I've seen of your channel and as a fellow Arizonan what's up brother and I love your camp style it's simple, bare bones and down to earth keep it going 👍
Glad you enjoy it my friend, I try to keep it real and simple on this channel! Thanks for the sub brother
Love the simple setup, from one Rock Warrior owner to another!
Thanks brother, these trucks are killer!
Great video buddy!
Great video! New subscriber here. I watch a ton of overland videos but really like all the practicality! I do alot of day trips but want to get into this stuff more. Keep the vids coming! Thanks!
Thank you so much, I’m really trying to push the simplicity of what this hobby really should be. It doesn’t have to be so commercialized and over complicated!
you're very genuine and honest. this was great to watch and i love how resourceful you were with your build. this truck def gets used and it shows, very cool! the only suggestion i would have is a phone mount. you can get cheap ram knock-off's for $20 and then come up with a stable mount solution. thanks for the inspiration.
I’m really glad you enjoyed the build video, and thanks for those words that means a lot!
i like the simple setup ....i love my tundra rw very reliable , I'm still looking for a bumper like that , I had kings 2.5 suspension w/ 700lb spring for a long time but i didn't like the stiffness of it. recently in FB marketplace got a set of new fox trd pro suspension and the icon add a leaf for the rear for $1600 that soon ill install . good job on the content !
I felt like I was being attacked while watching this entire video. Haha. Well done, sir.
Making it work where it counts. Cant beat that!
Pretty awesome budget build 👍
Thank you!
Love the setup. Too many people think they need to buy all the high end stuff just to go camping a few times a year. I'd rather spend that extra money on fuel to go out more often.
Cool video, I like the way you think 👍
Great job with the setup. I overland a 2011 Ram 1500 myself and could not agree more with your just send it comment. If you aren't afraid of pinstripes there is nothing better than a full size truck. Plus it can pull my atvs! Lol I only disagree with holding the phone. Did that many years and just got annoyed with it. I went with bulletpoint mounts which I found reasonably priced and lived the no drilling install. Looking forward to the next video man!
Of course you have a guitar because you and Willie are *On The Road Again*
When you brought up the roam boxes, I think I just met my new best friend!! LOL
To me that truck cap is the most interesting part
Great look at your stuff. I’m totally new to all this and am confused by all the high priced, high tech gear. And I’m lazy like you as far as cooking. Thanks for the video.
I’m glad you can take something from this. It doesn’t have to be over complicated or over priced. Just gotta do it
Love those cupboards 😮
Something’s gotta hold my fine China!
@@Whitedogoverland I’ll hold your fine China
Bro love it badass
Thanks brotha!
Nice!! Awesome setup! What didn’t you like about the 2nd gen taco that made you decide to trade it in?
You’re my hero
Just a regular guy out doin it!
I appreciate it! I have the same truck
They kick ass!
Very nice budget build and seems like you have your bases covered. What do you do for showers on the trail? I sprung for a jug of water, cheap 12v pump and a propane heater when they went on sale. Your wife would love it
It’s pretty grungy but I prefer to stay gross haha. Sometimes I’ll hit myself with some baby wipes when I get really putrid but nothing like washing that post 4 day camp trip stink off you at home.
Keep it simple. That’s the fun of camping.
I like your rig
Thank you!
I love your tent, Can you let me know the brand and where you bought it?
Thanks a lot
Keep posting
Hey great ideas on a 2nd gen Tundra! Im currently switching from a 1st gen dbl cab Tundra to a 2nd gen dbl cab Tundra. I was concerned about the size difference but it is hardly anything that'l make a difference. And the 2nd gen turning radius is way better and it has 4.30 rear end and Atrac ! Great videos, dig your style man!
Thanks man! You’ll enjoy the heck out of the new tundra, I’m not going to lie, if I had to do it over it would be a first gen. I love my truck a lot but my dad had an 01 with over 400k and no issues. The size of those is also perfect, but if you need bigger accommodations this truck is perfect for you
Hey, currently keeping an eye out for a decked system for my tundra. You said yours fit with some trimming. Do you know what truck it came out of or was it tundra soecific
Yeah, I love my $40 rocker camp chair. Haha. Had too many of those cheaper ones fail.
My wife bought me a fancy chair, I left it by the fire overnight. Fucker caught fire now I’m back to my Walmart chair
Ha, that sucks man. My camp set up is a basics as hell. No roof top tent, no truck canopy. Ground tent with a nice sleep pad, chair and fire pit. Rocking a 2017 double cab tundra though.. sold my Tacoma for it and I couldn’t be happier honestly. Kids like it too.
How’s the rav4?
I wonder what his dog is thinking when he just sees him talking to himself the entire time and pointing at things on the truck
She’s never amused with the human antics lol
I like your truck it's a tundra I have a tundra I'd like to set it up with a flip top camper like u have mainly so I could take the wife with me. So I subscribed to your videos so I can see how it's done before I I jump into all of it in the meantime u hang in there stay safe and enjoy your time.out there thanks for your videos
Thanks for watching! I’d suggest an older camper to stay on budget, new stuff is far too over priced for what they offer.
Hell yeah 💪
Man for GPS nothing beats a Bluetooth ear piece while driving and phone mounted on a steely mount (I have the old ball and socket mount but they have newer better mounts ) You can listen to directions while not interrupting music and since it’s in your ear you don’t miss any instructions/directions .
You have the same Tundra cab/bed as we do.. is your Flippac the standard 6.5 length? Wondering if it needed any modifying to fit.. trying to figure out if one on a 1st gen Tundra would also fit 2nd gen.
Sorry for the late reply. You’d need to measure widths, length should checkout if it’s within a couple inches.
Awesome video. New to your channel. I also have a double cab Tundra. A 2012. 110k miles on it.
Did you change out your power steering rack yourself? (I have blown mine once already). Had a local yota overland shop swap it. They dropped the front diff to gain access.
Appreciate the thoroughness of your content.
Welcome! I did do the steering rack myself but it was a huge PITA. Probably could have saved a lot of time dropping the diff right off the get go but spent a full day trying to get it out on its own. Not a fun job but totally doable. The 09-12 had a steering rack epidemic so hopefully replacement should cure any steering issues for some time.
@@Whitedogoverland hey thanks for the reply! Yeah from what I have read, it seems likeit is quite the job. Although I am more competent than most on the tools (tradesman/electrician/wrench turner)…from my understanding there is a lot of work involved. Apparently “dealership shop book time” is 19 hours. My shop did it in 7.
Out the door was approximately 2500 with a remanned rack and labour.
There doesn’t seem to be much content online and UA-cam regarding a DIY swap.
The inquisitive side of me would love to have a more thorough understanding of how to approach it…if I were to tackle it myself - (in the event it should happen again). Any tips / references would be appreciated.
90% of every job is planning. Better to have and not need…than to need and not have 🤙
Good for you for tackling it yourself!! Cheers!
What year is your Truck? Nice rig!Just subscribed!
you called your wench a jack? Oh, I think you put it in writing really quickly. Very good video. I can afford to buy whatever I want, but I am like you why waste money when you can get something cheaper that does the job. I have a little 1983 Toyota that is a great little truck that I will never sale. I have had lots of offers but I know that I would regret it even though I seldom drive it. I now have a Colorado zr2 that I 4 wheel. You sure have done a lot of things to the truck.
... and you called his winch a wench 🤣
Did you say that's a 2.5" lift? I'm getting near the point of needing new tires, so looking at doing some other upgrades. Trying to figure out what lift and tires to get
Yeah roughly 2.5, in my opinion with suspension less height is ideal. Trucks already big enough, anything more than that is overkill. Also buy once cry once as far as suspension!
Love the video. Just found your channel, as im searching tundra builds for inspiration. This was great.
I do hope audio improved in the future. That lav mic for the walk around is picking up everything, your breathing , etc. Gain is too high or the mic may be a bit cheap. Would love a minor investment to improve that if you haven’t already. Video is a bit tough on the ears otherwise.
Still watched till the end though! Great walk around!
Thanks! Yeah my audio was terrible last year, I was using those rode mics but upgraded since then. Audio is probably the most important piece.
What are your thoughts on a Nissan Titan Pro-4x. I wanted a Tacoma and a mid-size truck but ended up with a full-size off-road truck.
Full size is great, don’t have a ton of knowledge on Nissan, being a Toyota guy I’ll say it’s not Toyota but still quality ride!
My man. Haha.. you just made a sub out of me. Very practical..
Got to keep it practical, it’s just camping!
I have a slightly unrelated question, but what’s the backseat space in this double cab like compared to the backseat of your 2015 taco? I currently have a 2013 double cab Tacoma and thinking of trading in for the exact model tundra you have. Right now I have a newborn and the car seat sits snug in the middle seat. I love the rig, might do something similar if I do switch to the tundra
With my double cab it’s roughly the same as a Tacoma. Not a ton of space but perfect amount for my needs. I prefer the bed space over the cab space
@@Whitedogoverland yeah that’s why I’m looking more towards the double cab vs crew cab. The 5’ bed on my Tacoma is just too small. Thank you for the reply!
Great video. However I would like you to discuss how long it takes you to vacuum out all the dog hair?
It’s a long, slow, thought out process haha.
We’re you able to get all that lift to fit 35” solely out of the coil overs?
Yessir!
So, what year is your tundra? Its a beauty!
She’s a 2010, thank you!
What he’s saying is we need Baileys number 😂😂. I have a 18 tundra that I love so much. I enjoyed looking at your truck 🤘🏾👊🏾how has that setpower fridge held up brother?
He’s a killer fabricator! Everyone needs a solid fab buddy. Appreciate you watching the build. The fridge has been stellar for being so cheap. Absolutely no issues with it at all
I agree only want the steak, keep the potato and the broccoli
How easy is it to take that camper top off and store it between camping excursions.
It’s pretty much permanent now. I’ve sealed the entire shell to the bed and just leave it on. Not my daily driver so it just sits around between outings
Good video with some common sense guidelines.
This guy is the type to pull up to a bunch of brand new trucks and outshine them while staying under budget..
Shit don’t flatter me! Lol
The only thing I did splurge on was a good chair, those 8 dollar chairs will bend at the seams under my weight lol
I love you channel. What kind of dog to you have. I want one.
Thank you! She’s a Great Pyrenees, great dog!
Did u ever finish rug road with it ?
Not yet, planning to as soon as temps drop. That’ll be the best test
@@Whitedogoverland indeed. I was inspired by your partial run....and went and did it myself this spring (stock gladiator Rubicon)....it was epic/challenging. Bypassed carpet hill on miller road. The east slope of table mesa will be the only tight spot for ya, I think (unless you do carpet hill...)
That’s good info to know. Was carpet hill pretty steep after all the rains? A long time ago there was no bypass for it but I’m sure it’s gotten a lot worse
@@Whitedogoverland couldn't say, I never even considered running it so didn't get close enough to get a sense of its condition. Intended to do the bypass the whole time.
Where is this trail ?
Great video bro. Terrible place for your mic man loud asf clip that to your jeans bro lmao
Dude I know, I updated the software and now it sounds like dog shit!
@Whitedogoverland damn bro that sucks hopefully you get another update so u dont gotta buy another one. Love your tundra man its exactly what I want.
Is that a 5.5 ft bed?
It’s the 6.5
Nice truck and set up but u don't have to downplay and downgrade the things other guys use to justify it. I think the video would be better if u hadn't done that.
That mic is hot garbage. Try moving it lower
I know I updated the software and the audio went to shit. Was nice before that but for $250 I’m pissed!
Hey, currently keeping an eye out for a decked system for my tundra. You said yours fit with some trimming. Do you know what truck it came out of or was it tundra soecific
