    These are so wonderful. I'm a sound guy, and I love how ACCESSIBLE Dev makes it. He knows his stuff, and doesn't fuss about the hyper technical - which to me, preserves that joyful discovery of our rapidly changing technological advances. It's really easy to help explain to artists in such a way. Because it IS exciting. (The ocean machine rules BTW. Radial makes a thing called the EXTC that lets me use it as a line level insert on my midas for vocal effects. You're welcome.)

    as much as I love the sound, it's the weight. I think your bid on the Grandmeister 40 deluxe was very cool, because you were able step through it all and it showed us weekend chumps a down and dirty way to get the functionality out of an amp like that quick and it sounded amazing. I've been a Boogie user for 20yrs now and as much as I love them, my back no longer does. along with going the in ear route soon you almost don't have to have the massive stage volume, nut some is good for the people in the front. love all your videos Dev, thank you for doing us all a favor and showcasing this stuff. it opens the eyes and offers perspective to us all. see you. Ryan and Bev on the next show in Maryland. Cheers!

    Shred mode sounds like Metallica because James Hetfield (Kirk probably too) had his 2c+ Boogies modded to 2c++, which added some gain and aggression. Activating shred changes something in the circuit, making the JP2C essentially a 2c++.

    I wish more guys did reviews and play throughs like this. Keep it simple, informative and fun. Wish I'd found this channel years ago.
    Reminds me of that earlier Metallica sound - which it does because the Jp2C is the "best of" the old Mark II C+ amps in a reissue for John. So, for that Metallica Master of Puppets and Justice tone, this is the amp. James used a IIC++ on Puppets and a pair of IIC+ on Justice and the tours for both those albums. The IIC+'s also saw action on the Black Album.
    From all the amps Mesa has put out in the last decade the little Mark V 25 and 35 are the best. It has the drive and punch of the JP2C in a smaller size and wattage (rackmount version available) but the voicing of the amp, to me, has a little more tone and character. For anyone that doesn't need to rely just on a big amp for their backline, I'd take a look at those. The Mark IV voicing on them is just like an angry Mark IIC+ and the use of EL84's allows for that Mark 2C++ tone slaved into a JCM800 like James did on Master, as well as some Michael Schenker like lead tones. The dirty mode on Channel 1 is great if you like that 70's/80's era Marshall JMP 1987 50 watt driven hard tone.

    It's not really a big deal, just a reissue of the Mark IIC+, the amp that defined the modern metal guitar sound on the early Metallica records 😉
    It's amazing that over 30 years later, metal tones haven't really changed that much, other than lower tunings and a bit more mids in the mix.

    "What is it, Mark V signature?" actually it's based on Mark IIC+ (also the amp that Metallica used 7:09), hence the name JP-2C!

    • @Guitarsthatkill
      @Guitarsthatkill 7 років тому +1

      Yeah but voiced differently partly due to the fact that The Metallica amps were Simulclass and this is a 100/60 watt model. And the transformers different too from the V. Both have the IIC+ preamp circuitry. The V being Simulclass and with the transformer difference sounds smoother and more 3D maybe, whilst the JP is more 'raw' and in your face. A Metallica sig amp might be a simulclass version of this amp, maybe without the two EQs, and perhaps something going on in clean channel to get a little of that hybrid Roland/IIC+ clean hybrid sound Hetfield has/had.

    IS the EQ controllable via MIDI as well? Or does the MIDI only do channel switching and that's it? Would be cool if you could control the entire thing like gain / volume / etc settings for each channel and have them all be MIDI assignable! That would be a great way to get really precise dialed in tones at the push of a button.

    • @FantaFuture92
      @FantaFuture92 7 років тому

      if it´s switchable by hand then it should be also by midi.

    • @thereignofdando
      @thereignofdando 7 років тому

      Midi switching controls nearly everything. I use my AX8 to control my JP2C and it controls channel switching, reverb, fx loop, shred mode, eq 1 or 2... everything except the knobs themselves.

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x 7 років тому

      Yeah I watched the demo with Sweetwater -- you can set which switches are on and off via MIDI but you can't set the parameters of the actual knobs and EQ sliders...I wish they would have found a way to do that, shouldn't be too hard...The price of the amp is ridiculously high, it's just something I would have thought they should have included. Just my 0.02.

    • @thereignofdando
      @thereignofdando 7 років тому

      I think it is a little more difficult than that. My understanding is that the Graphic EQ is an analog function. They would need to be digital for that to be a thing. Kind of in the same way MOST analog delays dont have a tap function (and the ones that do use some pretty intense digital to analog to digital conversion to make work). I'm 90% sure that its a lot harder than 'shouldn't be too hard' ha. :)

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x 7 років тому +2

      It wouldn't have to be full digital -- they would just need digital _switching_ to control the analog processes. Very easy. Something like an arduino can be used for such things at the hobbyist level.
      This is also exactly how Ernie Ball does their "Game Changer" systems.
      Analog hardware and components, but with digital switches that can be programmed.

    Tone at 5:20. On a Blackstar HT20, what do?

    • @SamFisher338
      @SamFisher338 7 років тому +1

      Do you have a boost, overdrive or distortion pedal? The best thing I ever did was getting a pedal to put in front of my HT20, made the tone 1000x better. Personally I use a Metal Muff as a boost/extra eq, though I'm sure there are much better options out there. I don't play more modern sounding stuff like this though, so I can't really recommend you anything. For this kind of tone I would get something else, preferably with a graphic eq.
      Oh, and replacing the speakers can also do wonders to your tone. I use the factory speaker, but I know a guy that changed his for a G12 T75 and it made it sound much more like MOP/AJFA era Metallica.

    • @thedapperllama6579
      @thedapperllama6579 7 років тому

      I just have the head, play it into my interface/out my studio monitors. I don't have any pedals at the moment but I use Bias sometimes so I could add an 808 into the chain.

    • @SamFisher338
      @SamFisher338 7 років тому

      Oh, yeah, I forgot there was a head version. But I don't think a HT20 on its own could get this tone, so an 808 would surely help. As you can see on the EQs, Dev is using a very scooped mids sound, so use that as a starting point. I would say bass and mids at around 9 o'clock, lots of treble, and ISF to the left of course. Then use the 808 to add that extra saturation and maybe further scoop the mids. My experience says that the HT20 is not really that good at getting that Mesa Boggie sound, so probably best if you can have a second EQ like Dev is using. It's not the ideal amp for this, but maybe you can get something similar.
