I dont understand the "hate" towards his tone, I'm totally in love with it, it's huge, powerful but still clear and very defined. Honestly I think alot of people are just nostalgic about how JP, his tone and what DT used to be, and I agree that those things were great but hey people evolve, tastes evolve, ears and gear evolve and I just think it's natural that he has changed a lot of things otherwise it would just be the same old 80's sound over and over again. I think it's a great amp and an amazing sound and it's totally fine if you disagree
have you heard "Breaking the fourth wall" fckng awful tone, cant stand that dvd
I dont think i've heard it
bwahah, ears evolve definitely. i change my crunch tone every third or fourth time i plug in my guitar.
bwahah, ears evolve definitely. i change my crunch tone every third or fourth time i plug in my guitar.
its sometimes called envy, when one can't afford the amp, it apparently sounds like shit.
I saw Dream Theater on The Astonishing tour, in Montreal, and his tone was amazing, all night long. Even the acoustic sounded great, but that Mesa tone was so sweet, even at stadium volumes. Amazing.
John is one of the most relaxed dudes ever.
He's more beard than man at this point.
Indeed!
I think the tone comes from the beard, not the amp or the guitar.
Mesa makes beards now
more hair, period.
I think it's a fake beard. Takes it off after show, walks out of the gig with a Les Paul, total anonymity.
It's like the one Benicio Del Toro used in the diamond heist scene at the start of Snatch.
The Our New World riff is so good and so fun to play too.
The wood grain on the 6 string guitar is stunning.
this what I expected....From John and Mesaboogie
absolutely 100% tone
Thanks a bunch, +Tell Swain! :)
+MESA/Boogie Whats the difference between this amp and the Mark V? ( Both sound baddass btw ).
Hi Paul Daluz - Great question! Hard to break it down into just a few sentences, but here goes; The JP-2C has more punch and stiffness to it. Very fast, articulate and immediate to respond to your pick attack etc. The Mark V offers this too, but it's a Simul-Class powewr section instead of Class A/B, and Simul-Class is slightly more forgiving in FEEL (on the strings, etc). The Mark Five is also more versatile with the 9 different modes. There's obviously crossover between the two in that there's the C+ mode in the Mark V, but it's the other modes like Tweed, Crunch, Edge and Mark I in Ch. 2, etc., that offer a larger palette of different sounds. But, some people want the more punch and the feature set of the JP-2C (two EQs, MIDI, Shred, CabClone etc.). Lots if similarities, quite a few differences. Truly ideal to play them both and see which is best ofr you if you can get to a local dealer to compare. Hope this helps and thanks for your interest! :)
MESA/Boogie Sounds like the Mark V is the better of the two for my needs and tastes. I'm a die hard fan of Petrucci dont get me wrong, but I preffered his heavier tone of the late 90's, primarily on his "Awake" album which was more of a rectifier tone. Ive played the Mark V amp before and it was absolutely stunning. However, I may just go with the Roadster because I like the heavier Metal tones that rectifiers offer. And then may graduate to the Mark V later when I start to become more picky and discerning of my tone as Petrucci has done. But in the time being I'm a metal head dyed in the wool. :-)
Great stuff, Paul Daluz - The JP2C can be described as crushingly tight - and still offers lots of versatility with it's control set. But there is definitely a wider array of sounds to be had from a Mark V. If you're looking for something that will provide different sounds for you, the Mark V has a little more to offer there with just a little less beastly punch than the JP2C. That said, the Mark V is not at all soft... just soft-er than a JP2C. Then, there's the ultimate cushion and saturation and harmonics that only a Recto offers. So many amps, so little time. :D Good luck in your search and let us know if we can help!
I witnessed this amp in the his concert omg this video literally is 20% to 30% in comparison to the real sound Live amazing
Mesa boogie is always top of the line and a must for any professional musician that truly cares about clear tone and wants crazy sustain! I am now saving up to get jp-2c because John petrucci is the reason I picked up a guitar! Thanks for this awesome video
Thanks for the amazing kind words, +Justin Luebbers. :)
I came here just to hear John's outstanding playing.
John probably has a different definition of crunch than the rest of us...
he use the definition of crunch used by all metalhead
@@andrewlevistermma not really.
it’s because the mark series amps just have a very crunchy sound ;)
No, because the ch. 2 of this amp is named by mesa crunch channel... this channel cover the gain from clean to extreme distortion!!!!
😂😂😂😂
Petrucci playing 5:13
Me playing at my very best day on full speed with my best gear: 5:30
Fuck is the name of the song, I always forget xD
@@kevah94 A bit late, but it's Our New World from The Astonishing
@@skriller7102 thanks man! Appreciate it 🤘
Man I remember seeing them in Portland on this tour. I’ve never heard anything sound better than they did that night. It was truly incredible.
I saw the same show and It was awesome!
JP has the best setup from Guitar to Amp!!!!!!
that divebomb at the end 😮
5:05 perfect guitar tone right there
Agreed, I prefer the "dry" tone to the modulation tone he sampled afterward.
Same here. I have a strong dislike for any kind of modulation effects on a high gain tone. I really wish Petrucci would get over this need he seems to have lately with smothering his tone with all that glossy goo.
I say that out of love of course. :D
ikilledsifodyas he explained in another video that he does that live to get a bigger sound, to make up for the things ( double tracking for example) that he has in the recordings and cannot get live
the worst example of this is fucking Zakk Wylde. Makes me wonder is he uses all that chorus to cover up his playing...
@@DanielFantini cover up what??? Said the bedroom musician 😂😂
man, I'm a rock overdrive non master volume guy but I appreciate a warm buzzy metal tone. And this is some glorious metal tone, I could listen to this all day
The dark santa clause.
Jay Nartz hahahahahaha
I need this amp in my life.
Billo I just got one finally after years of wondering if this amp was the right one for me and I'm so glad that I spent a little extra money because it's worth every penny man. Great crunch and beautiful clean tones. Doesn't sound at all muddy or flubby.
Have to agree. Only boogie does this super heavy articulate thing. Still cannot escape my trem-o-verb from 20+ years ago!
This super heavy articulate thing, also known as knowing how to eq your amp correctly.
What a brilliant demo. JP is a jack of all trades but master of the guitar.
I love the chorus effect; gives me Rush nostalgia :)
Agreed, +Aaronmac404! :) Thanks for watching.
thanks John for being so thorough in the demonstration of this amp.
I've gotta buy one.
I love that John Petrucci Is making more and more videos we love you man!!!!
5:16 perfect sound, awesome guitar tone right there!
Awesome video, I was at that show! (Mothers day, brought be some grief...) Nice work all on the amp, modernized the C+ while preserving its legacy.
Many thanks, +Greg Remmert. It's been amazing to finally have a modern Mark IIC+ to offer again. So much history. Thanks for watching and all the best! :D
JP is great! He could be a phenomenal salesman as well. 30 years I play, I have every gear possible, have a perfect sound and still...he makes me beg for his guitar and his amp....And I already have the Triaxis and it sounds exactly like this anyway...lol!!!
wholy smokes!!! wicked tone not muddy at all!
The tone was so brutal it killed by first born... and Ive never had a child.
Ha!
It killed it in an alternate dimension where you had one.
stay off the drugs kids
The only other amp I've ever heard chug like a Mark Series is a Soldano SLO. But to hear a pair of JP-2Cs while standing in surround sound between two 412 cabs and a pair of mini recto cabs must be sublime!
In regards to tonality, this is more back to the roots than ever since the whole Music Man era.
There is just nothing like this man and his tone.
Good work Hagrid
Awesome information.
THANK YOU ✌👊😎
Just bought mine today! Will have it by Friday!!Exited indeed!
His guitar effect is always tasty
MESA/Boogie I am Happy as long as I listen to you
Que bien toca, suena cada nota limpia y con un tono demoledor a cualquier velodidad.
This guy is not human. The amps too, are amazing and aren't human even though they are handmade. Great video, Mesa Boogie! Don't know how you do it.
Thanks for the kind words, Josh! Much appreciated. :)
No, thank you! It's an honor to talk to you, Randall.
I own a 1981 mess boogie Mark 2 with all options,it sounds awesome.
I will send the serial # off to Mesa and see if I can get the exact stats on it, thanks for pointing that out.
Two thumbs way up with the drop "D" portion of the video. Sounds great!
Many thanks, Robert!
man Petrucci doesn't drop tune often enough. I'm not saying that as a thirsty modern metal guitarist who thinks "durr it's not brutal if it's not dropped" cause I actually play in E standard most of the time but every time Petrucci has drop tuned he's come up with some fucking phenomenal riffs. Home, Our New World, Viper King...yeah you get it
It's been a dream of mine to own and play a mesa boogie amp since I was 16. Im so close now to owning one of your combos... Exciting times.
Huge tone ⚡
excellent sound John :-)
yeah...i like that...love those EQ sliders
this amp looks awesome
I have no idea why but at 5 minutes I found John's beard funny!
awesome heavy crunch tone, wish I could get one of that someday.
So do it, it ain't THAT hard...
Give this dude a lunchbox with a speaker inside it and he will make it sound good.
I designed a pedal this year to try replicate mesa mark series. it really is an ultimate heavy tone. Mesa you created a master piece
Where might one find this unicorn you've created? I'd like to saddle it up and ride out on it...
I love how a boogie without effects sounds massive to start with. My single rec is amazing and I always get complements on it's tone.
THX Beardman !
Just love this guy! :D
"it doesnt just turn into mush. its definitely a boogie thing" speaking from my own experience, its a Boogie Mark series thing....i own both the Mark V and JP2C+ and they both perform the same in that respect. the clarity of the individual notes even at high gain/high volume settings is something that my old dual rec and triple rec couldn't do. I have owned quite a few amps in my 35+ years of playing and these Mark amps are in my opinion the best.
Yeah The Boogies are the Marks. Its 'Mesa Dual rectifier' 'Mesa Triple' etc etc The most they get near its is Mesa/Boogie company umbrellaship. Santana plugged into an amp that definitely wasn't featuring treadplate. :p
Love it, however I prefer the organic sound without modulation, miss that from him. Thanks MB... Keep on bringing those videos.
listen prior to him pressing the chorus pedal, fool
Jesus (JP) + Mesaboogie = perfect combination
If there's a Guitar God, JP is Him.
He is called "The Man"...
I have the Zakk Wylde Chorus pedal and it sounds so awesome with high gain/distortion. I can gets tones real similar to Petrucci's here. Using it in the effects loop obviously. Although I do like the sound of chorus in the rack as well
Hey Mesa!....how about a mini jp2c like you did with the mark v?
Huge tone!!! sounds like young Leslie West vs Godzilla
I have the Mark III Red Stripe and it comes very close to the 2C+ tone. has that nice harmonic richness with the tightness and clarity. i recommend it for anyone who wants a 2C+ but wants to spend 800 dollars instead of 3 g's
Nice Video .... I wish EvH would do a Video Like This
Sick!
wow! just think how amzing its to be one of the best guitarists in the world,be in one of the best bend in the world, have the majesty one of the most amazing gutars in the world, one of the best amps in the world and in genral have the best gear in the world. but he completely deserve it. love you john you are fucking amazing!
Maybe the phenomenon JP is talking about when it comes to playing a single string and it not sounding like mush is down to the valves that are used in the head units. Either Mesa or his guitar tech has come up with the holy grail of valve combinations that give him his tone as well as the characteristics of the mesa head unit he uses.
I'd like to hear it next to a Dual Rectifier quite honestly
Im 60. Played since I was 5. Played mesa since 1980 . own 2 boogie, 2 Marshall, orange. Also boss 100 watt katana
vikings see this fella and bolt, they can not compete with this beard
Tasty tone
john BEARDucci!
If only John could review his own beard on youtube. Im sure it will hit Billion views.
MesaAwesome!
No wonder he's gotten so buff. Look at the size of that pedal board!
that guy playing seems pretty good.
Expensive Sounds
awesome tones! one question: the effect/modulation John kicks in at around 7:11 sounds like a chorus to me. is that what it is, or is it something else?
It is Chorus!
excelente
Super son!!!Époustouflant!!!
It's like JP has really heavy boots then a roadie glued them to the stage.
Thats what keeps him so Down to Earth
After recently acquiring Mark 5:25 this one is next!
What string gauge does John use in E standard?
Congrats on the Mark Five: 25, Replicant! Not sure about John's string guages - that question might be best answered by Ernie Ball folks as I believe that's the strings he uses. Hope the Mark Five: 25 is exceeding your expectations and thanks for the kind words. Rock on! :D
It really is! It's a nice addition to my Mesa Horizontal 2x12 cab. Cheers!
He either uses the regular slinky or the ernie ball RPS 10 gauge strings. He's gone back and forth on those recently as far as I know. Hope that helps!
can anyone give me that riff he is playing (wich song?)? i am not so much into dream theater, but its a nice riff.
What John also isn't mentioning (since he's advertising the amp) is that those Illuminator pickups on the Majesty also heavily contributes to that distorted but clear tone he is talking about.
The JP-2C definitely responds better to lower output pickups
Please say that you guys are goiing to do a 35w (or 25w) of this...!! *---*
I have the mark V 35 it's great.
I love his beard and tone.
the tone beard style !
Hey Mesa boogie, How would i go about using the cab clone to go to the board and use my cab as a reference monitor on stage at the same time in a live environment?
on this video is he using a valve beard or a transistor one?
Glitchmob Couture
I think it's a valve. though I believe he removes 2 of the 4 when he does demos and replaces them for shows.
When I hear JP’s chorus laden crunch tone at 3:23, it makes me think of the Terminator T1000 in liquid metal form.
Woa~ JP-VH at 7:00mins ... Saw Doug (MESA) at At BayArea Amp Show May14~15 2016 we talked EQ's which MESA EQ's Are Phenomenal ... the Pedal too... made a lil video of my own just kinda saying i was there 8>)...
What kind of cable is he using? Is that an off-the-shelf Mogami, or a custom made secret weapon?
Espero un dia, hagas un video de esa pedalera fabulosa que tenes ahi, y que seguro, tambien la hicieron especialmente para vos.
5:13, people.
You can find similar tones in the amptweaker tightmetal pro with the right EQ and power amp. Less expensive for sure...
jesus christ every new video I see of him his hair wont stop growing.
How do I become JP
One does not simply become a god.
I thought he was like Thor and all I had to do was pick up his axe
You need the ''Pick of Destiny'' ;-)
Only if you're worthy
Failed Pixel He's actually like Samson. His power is in his beard and flowing mane.
That chorus is nasty.
I have always loved the quality, passion, and sophistication ( sometimes, TOO much complexity... ) that goes into every Boogie amp. So what I'm about to say isn't as a "Boogie Troll" or to start a fight here. Having said that, I have with little success found the gain/crunch quality that I love. It's very difficult it seems just to dial in a smooth and creamy, say, modded-Marshall gain structure, or better yet a stock Friedman amp. I guess all I'm asking is, is that just the "Mesa House Sound", or am I maybe applying too much eq ?
Hi +1970borntorun - Thanks for your thoughtful comment and here's a couple of thoughts regarding your excellent question. If you are seeking British or Marshall sounds from a Mesa, there are amps other than the JP-2C which provide great examples of those sounds AND the classic Mark series sounds as well. The JP-2C is very specifically a Boogie Mark series sound - the IIC+ to be exact - and while many Mesa amps are capable of not just Mesa sounds but also Marshall and Fender style sounds and beyond, this amp is very specific. If you are looking for an amp with similar features (three channels, Graphic EQ, etc...) but something that will offer Brit sounds as well, I woukld recommend the Mark V rather than the JP-2C as it's second channel modes of Edge & Crunch offer EXCELLENT Brit sounds in addition to the classic Mark sounds offered in Channel 3, the LoneStar and Mark series clean sounds in Channel 1, AND, the Tweed mode in Ch. 1 which, turned to 10 and set to
10 watts sounds vintage amazing as well. Hope this helps and thanks for your interest. Let us know if you have any further questions - happy to help!
MESA/Boogie Thank you man! :) That helps quite a bit. But if only I had Randy Rhoads' fingers i could make ANY amp magical haha ;)
I have owned 2 Mark V's over time, it took me almost 3 months to dial in my tone, but once i was there it was tonal bliss. its totally worth the patience. If you're not able to dial it in, you don't have the sonic ears to balance the sliders and the EQ's. it takes skills and lots of patience. this amp is NOT plug and play but it pays off huge dividends. MESA FOR LIFE.
EVH Fan I'm sure you are right. Any particular reason you prefer the Mark 5 to the Dual Rectifier aside from the obvious incredible versatility?
1970borntorun hey man. I own a dual recto as well. I prefer one over the other for the same reason you mentioned. But the real difference is the mark V has mark 1 the lone star platform super clean channel the mark IV amp and of course mark 2C+. The recto on its own has its own character.
Gimli is such a great guitar player.
Maybe I missed it... but can this monsters wattage be cut down? It sounds amazing.
Thanks, +Fu Bitz - YES! The Amp can be switched from 100 watts with all 4 tubes to 60 watts with just 2 tubes. Thanks for watching!
Anyone know what chorus pedal/fx rack the fractal is replicating at 3:25?? Sounds alot like maidens "somewhere in time" era chorus which was from a gallien krueger....
RESPECT THE BEARD
It's not magic John, It's just you! #MESABoogie
