  • An Indigenous New Zealand lawmaker was thrown out of New Zealand's parliament for performing a Māori haka in protest against what he said were racist arguments. Rawiri Waititi told lawmakers in the chamber that he was forced to listen to a 'constant barrage of insults' directed toward Indigenous people. Speaker Trevor Mallard told Waititi to sit down, but instead he performed the haka, a traditional dance or challenge accompanied by a chant. 'Order. The member will now leave the chamber,' Mallard told Waititi, which he did along with his co-leader, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer

So, some context here. He was asked to resume his seat after attempting to use a point of order to debate. Points of order are taken immediately and are heard in silence in the NZ House of Reps and therefore are only for matters of procedure, not for debate. He was then asked to leave the chamber as he did not resume his seat.
There was a general debate following question time during which he might have been able to speak on any topic for 5 minutes.
There are many cases of Haka and Waiata being performed in the house and it's not a problem, in fact it's celebrated. In this case it was the manner and context in which it was performed that was the problem. Extra details that most media outlets are too lazy to report.

@CHIEF TAHCHAWWICKAH Stop writing "Europeans". Do you even realize that it is not all Europeans nations who colonized? In fact, european colonialist empires were a minority, albeit stronger, then their european counterparts who did not.
By generalizing the word European and affiliating it to colonialism is comparable to saying that Africans speak african, which is absurd.
My people never practiced colonialism, and we are europeans.

@@AirbusA-yv5dg sticking to the subject at hand, he knowingly disregarded a rule that all standing male MPs in the house were required to wear ties (not ‘cultural attire’ - a tie). The Speaker’s role is to enforce the rules set by the house and voted upon by the MPs, and so he did.
The MPs subsequently voted to change the rules regards ties, now the Speaker will uphold these new rules as is his role.
Notice that no one attacks him for wearing a hat - there’s no rule against it.
This is nothing to do with racism, it’s either ignorance on his part or deliberate disrespect of the rules agreed upon by his fellow MPs and I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter as he never acknowledges that a mistake has been made and instead takes every opportunity such as this to grandstand (this current example being that he was raising issues at the wrong point in the proceedings and rather than withdraw and try again when we arrived at that point later on, he did this).
