The show was amazing because it talked about all these stupid annoying situations everyone has been in before. All the things people wish they could freely say in public. The casting wasn’t bad but it was amazing for reasons other than the cast.
If anyone looks seriously at the reasons for the shows success, it's due to many factors. That doesn't sound very dramatic. As always, Jerry Seinfeld put the success of the show into analysis and perspective. It seems to me that the main component was perseverence. Ratings were terrible at the start but George Shapiro believed in Seinfeld's work ethic and writing ability and the potential because of his dedication. It seems that happenstance played a role. Seinfeld found 2 guys that had comedic talent and after adding himself into the mix, he realized that they needed a dedication woman with comedy experience. Seinfeld just thought that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was intelligent, charming, beautiful and the 4 nucleus of characters developed chemistry. It seems the chemistry that they had allowed them to just be SO DEDICATED TOGETHER AND HAVE FUN. HOWEVER. Without the creativity of Larry David and for crying out loud THE TEAM OF WRITERS, the show would have continued to struggle. And, the show had director Andy Ackerman. Huge plus there. Then, they started to get an AWESOME supporting characters. Some of those for several episodes and some for only one. "Newman" (Wayne Knight) was important to have. Characters like "Putty". Obviously, when a character like "Putty" appears not only with that name, but with his mannerisms, it's gonna' get a few more folks to tune in. And characters like Mr. Pitt, Kramers attorney "Jackie" Childs (Phil Morris), "The Soup Nazi" (Paul Thomas), and a bevy of others. Yes. When Seinfeld and Larry David created the show it's because they started to notice so many things like something odd at the grocery store. So, they would write about it. TIRELESSLY I understand. They actually "hatched" the show at a comedy improv called TO CATCH A RISING STAR. They thought they had funny ideas but Seinfeld really didn't think it would work. He knew what the odds were. Everything just slowly happened. Finally, they were able to get NBC to put them on THURSDAY NIGHT. Which, at that time, was the night for the biggest potential audience. And they were able to get the time slot just after the hit sitcom "Cheers". Just before the local news. That is what put the show "Seinfeld" on the map. Seinfeld seemed to be even more dedicated. Both helping to direct and all of the writing. Writing with brilliant minds like Larry Charles. To create shows. For example, Jean-Paul the marathon runner who overslept and missed his his chance to compete in the Olympics. Then, the whole quagmire about a missed wake-up call and the alarm clock. Other episodes that the writers like Andy Robin and Gregg Kavett came up with. The security guard who "should have a chair to sit in". Seinfeld temporarily taking over Newmans mail route. ("Everyone got their mail".) The J. Peterman catalogue. ("Shooting a rhino with a hollowed out bamboo stick armed with chick peas".) Elaine needing "sponges". Kramer having a "pipe night" and smoking cigarettes by engaging in a "pow wow" with other smokers. Then looking at his face the next day by looking at his reflection in Jerrys toaster. Then, the following statements in a comraderie banter with Jerry. Eventually, the show was given "carte blanche" and allegedly their was an unlimited budget. Season 7 if I remember correctly. So, it really was just a combination of factors. It was PERSEVERENCE. AND, OF COURSE IT WAS THE WRITERS. ANDY ACKERMAN DIRECTING. Others too I'm sure. Suzie Mamann Greenberg just as one example. None of that would have come together AND STAYED TOGETHER IF IT WASN'T FOR JERRY SEINFELDS DEDICATION. Just my humble perception. Wow though. At it's height, what a show. For about three or four years, it was "water cooler" talk for many people. (I used to get off work and dash home to watch it with Jana. Just to get the newest episode. We laughed hysterically.)
Almost didn't mention. Who liked the scene at the dealership where "Putty" is racking up all of those "after market" charges on the calculator while selling Jerry a car that he has already agreed to buy? "Finders fee. (Jerry says, "finders fee? It was already on the lot".) Rust proofing. Extra wheel alignment. Vacuum charge. Valve stem replacement fee. Dual exhaust modification charge. Stereo system check fee. Undercoating charge. "We don't even know what that is". Emergency GPS check. Tire depth regulation fee. All specifications check charge. Lot space fee. To me, that stuff is hilarious. Just because of the reputation that dealerships have. Then, you have a guy like "Putty" who has à sixth grade education with no integrity making a commission on frivolous charges and fees. Those writers on Seinfeld. How many of those episodes on Seinfeld are truly very funny. Some were hilarious. Seinfeld deserves a ton of credit. The luck factor was very fortunate. Sometimes in life I think you have to make your own luck. Once the show was approved to go to Thursday night just after the sitcom "Cheers" they were golden. Especially because they had developed the show with a cast of supporting characters and new characters like Baboo Batt. Who couldn't identify with poor Baboo from Pakistan trying to prosper after opening up his own business? And, Kramers zany reactions. For example, the high powered shower. The Commando 5000 it might have been. And the time that they took that little "yapper" dog and dropped it off in the middle of nowhere and it scattled all the way back with a piece of Kramers shirt hanging out of it's mouth. That TEAM OF WRITERS. And, the editing that took place during the readings before rehearsals. A ton of work I would certainly think. But, it all paid off. For everyone. And for the audience to enjoy was what Seinfeld wanted. NBC won big. Castlerock won big. Eventually, everyone reaped the benefits. Dedication & Perseverence I believe.
I've met Michael, Jason, and Julia in person (nope, not Jerry). Michael is socially awkward, Jason is very self-assured, and Julia is sweet and charming. I don't know if Michael Richards is a racist, but his on-stage rant was horrible. Is there no way to redeem yourself after that? Mel Gibson continues to work after doing far worse.
I remember when it was front page in most of the newsmagazine programs, "Dateline" "Entertainment Tonight" etc. They were saying the two were quite intimate, not "went on a couple coffee dates". They claimed back then that J S was "dating" many different young chicks, and the show lost some fans as a result. I sometimes remember "Shoshana" and think whatever happened, as E T or something like that program was speculating they'd get hitched.
Seinfeld was a rare combination of great writing, luck and an ensemble cast that just jived together perfectly. Every character on the show was unique and hilarious in their own right. All the elements came together to make the show a success. Seinfeld was lucky, because his stand-up comedy stinks.
I don’t see it as luck. I see it like the 70s were depicted in All in the Family - a sitcom mirroring real life and not pandering to people’s fantasy of how they wish their life was like (ie, Growing Pains, Family Ties, etc). It was real people saying what we wish we could say without the PC police throwing a fit.
@@a016202 I hear you but what I see as luck is that all the elements came together at the same time to produce an iconic show. The characters, the acting or the plot lines/ writing, take away or change any one of them and it wouldn't be the excellent show that it is.
That's the only downside of Seinfeld - that little opening monologue thing. Do people like that part of the show? Am I the only one that cringes at it?
Some thing that has come out lately about the Michael Richards incident is important to note, although it doesn't excuse Richards racist rant. The hecklers had been at the comedy club the night before, and many nights before, and had made it a regular thing to harass the comedians and heckle them. Plus, they were taunting these people who put themselves out there on the stage as entertainers. It's not like they were completely innocent. Why Richards went after their racial characteristics can only be explained by some Sort of desire he had to hurt them by calling attention to their race, which is racist by definition.
Richard Pryor built a career on “that” word. Richards says it 5 times and gets cancelled. Ridiculous. Not to mention he was baited for most of what happened. And anyway - stop making it ok for some to use that word with impunity (I’m looking at Chappelle even though I love him) while the hint of the word ruins other’s lives (like Roseanne).
@@a016202 welcome to equity it's the new racism its okay to do or say anything against white people... I love a country where the color of your skin dictates the words you can say...
No way you’re dumbass is defending the use of racial Slurs. We all saw and heard what he said. Doesn’t matter how the crowd reacts you don’t cross the line and say a slur 5 times in rapid success. You dumbass
At the end of the day these people are human, they will slip up and say wrong things. Just because Richards said racist stuff it does not mean it reflects his believes or character, and he apologized for it meaning he clearly doesn't believe in what he said. At the end of the day, how can we judge a person be it a comedian, celebrity or a complete stranger off of one thing they said once? If they show remorse, thats enough, why drag their name through the dirt after the fact. If the person really meant it and actually has racist views, they are a garbage human and should be treated with disgust
"Why Richards went after their racial characteristics can only be explained by some Sort of desire he had to hurt them by calling attention to their race, which is racist by definition." thats a completely false statement. it is not by definition what racism is.
It's definitely a bad image problem for Michael Richards as a result of his racist and unhinged rant. Richards was fantastic on the Seinfeld sitcom, so it's a shame that's been somewhat tainted by his later misconduct. But Jason Alexander's mini-scandal is kind of weak, and his strong apology takes the sting out of it. No scandal at all for Julia Louis-Dreyfus--that's a real nothing burger. But maybe most offensive to me is the way Jerry Seinfeld himself is so dismissive of any criticism that he's insensitive about social movements targeting sexism, racism and other genuinely noxious attitudes. He's so full of himself, so entitled and sure of his righteousness, and so oblivious or indifferent to what others find insulting. I have great affection for the sitcom he starred in, but the more I see of him outside that show the more obnoxious I find him as a person. And the concept of interviewing comedians while driving around is so lame that it could only come from the mind of Jerry Seinfeld the stand-up comedy dud. Of course, he would be indignant and defensive when his choice of guests is criticized for its white guy dominance.
Nobody's perfect. Even the people who bitch about this show have their own flaws and mistakes. People mess up, no matter what their name or status is. The world will never be perfect. The woke mob are out of touch with reality. If they went outside of the US or Europe, reality would hit them hard.

I swear as a society were gettin way too sensitive…there is s line, of course (like what rant kramer had on stage was 100% not cool and way over the line) but come onnnnnn some of what ppl let offend them is just silly
Not standing up for Richards, but how is heckling considered playful in a comedy setting but in a dramatic theatre performance the heckler would be thrown out and chastised. No respect for comedy because everyone thinks being funny is an innate skill we all have and not a talent to be honed over time.
There are different types of heckling (playful, vicious, etc.) and generally it's accepted at comedy shows and comedians know they have to deal with it. In the theater no heckling, or conversations or even excessive talking, is tolerated.
Seinfeld was criticized by many for ending the series too soon. To me, it ran a year too long. By the last season the main characters turned into unlikeable characters. The final episode was terrible, and this was my all time favorite tv show....
Yup. And even though it wasn't cancelled, NBC didn't want to do another season. The whole, well it's only for a year ending, was meant to push the network into greenlighting another year. They did not and good on them.
That was the point I always figured. That through all the episodes they never learned anything and was still the same selfish ppl they always was the last episode is literally a repeat of the first episode to back that up more
We all make mistakes. Also this show was in the 1990s. People are now extremely sensitive. I was never offended by anything on the show. I remember watching “All in the Family “. The character Archie represented some of our American culture, just like all of the characters did. That show was so well written and presented. How could we be offended by the truth of how some people are. There’s always something to be learned and now something to be offended by. You must remember where someone is coming from, their intent.

"The New Adventures of Old Christine" is a great comedy series aswell by Louis Dreyfuss, pre Veep.
Yes they should have mentioned that
Still best sitcom in my book. Watching it again ... I'm sure it will get pulled like many old time shows.
Netflix just paid over 500million for a 5 year contract. It's never been more profitable
Seinfeld will get pulled when Friends does, which is never lol
Some of those for several episodes and some for only
one.
Yes. When Seinfeld and Larry David
created the show it's because they started to notice so many things like something odd at the grocery store.
Season 7
if I remember correctly.
Who liked the scene at the dealership where "Putty" is racking up all of those "after market" charges on the calculator while selling Jerry a car
that he has already agreed to buy?
"Finders fee. (Jerry says, "finders fee? It was already on the lot".) Rust proofing. Extra wheel alignment. Vacuum charge. Valve stem replacement fee. Dual exhaust modification charge. Stereo system check fee. Undercoating charge. "We don't even know what that is". Emergency GPS check. Tire depth regulation fee. All specifications check charge. Lot space fee. To me, that stuff is hilarious. Just because of the reputation that dealerships have. Then, you have a
guy like "Putty" who has à sixth grade education with no integrity making a commission on frivolous charges and fees. Those writers on Seinfeld. How many of those episodes on Seinfeld are truly very funny. Some were hilarious.
Seinfeld deserves a ton of credit.
The luck factor was very fortunate. Sometimes in life I think you have to make your own luck. Once the show was approved to go to Thursday night just after the sitcom
"Cheers" they were golden. Especially because they had developed the show with a cast of supporting characters and new characters like Baboo Batt. Who couldn't identify with poor Baboo from Pakistan trying to prosper after opening up his own business?
And, Kramers zany reactions. For example, the high powered shower.
The Commando 5000 it might have
been.
Get pulled??? Are you abusing xanax again??
Did you forget Dreyfus had the new adventures of old Christine for many years.
I loved the Seinfeld show they were all kept me an my husband laughing
Elaine was the best charactet
HAted her guts. To me her existance never made any sence. Neither did her clothing and hair style.
And I never laugh with anything she did in this show, Really. not once. I am rewatching it. Going to season 4. All characters made me laugh. Not her.
Wow! Such a strong statement, for a character, you. don't personally.
@@sitcomsTV It was the late 80s/90s and she dressed just like a lot of women her age and social status
Larry David gave him a small part in HBO’s Clear History (2013).
Mel was just stating facts, nothing wrong with that.
Love this show. The cast was the best group of comedians for that time. Still watch.
Forget all the other controversies, Seinfeld dated a 18 year old when he was 40 wtf
Its like drake and millie bobby brown, just gives a weird vibe but no one knows what went down really
Actual, she was 17 when they started dating.
What about leonardo di caprio
They may be young but at least the women are of legal drinking age
‘Viteral’ that’s a new one to me
Seinfeld was a rare combination of great writing, luck and an ensemble cast that just jived together perfectly.
" his stand-up comedy stinks" I could not agree more.

Imagine the gall of saying the merits of your craft is what should get you success and not the color of your skin! What a scandal
His wife went where the money was.
I like Old Christine. Still haven't seen Veep. I've never heard of Bob Patterson, but I've watched a couple of episodes of Duckman.
Haunt? I'm sure Seinfeld sleeps very well, thank you 😄
Still the best SC ever.
At 38 he was dating a 17 year old? As a thirty-seven-year-old that makes no sense to me.
Jason Alexander is a sweetheart
Shout out to JLD for not, um, doing any of that ♥️
Seinfeld is more or less correct, the trigger-warning generation often see the world looking for reasons to be offended
Gary Signfield!!!!!😂😂😂
I loved the fact gorge killed Susan with cheep stamps 😆
I got an "e" I'll sell ya
Damn, are you telling me Elaine and Newman haven't committed war crimes?
How is Jerry dismissing stupid questions about not having comedians of specific races a problem?
I dont care what they did. People love looking for juicy things about people. I love Seinfeld.
Nobody's perfect. Even the people who bitch about this show have their own flaws and mistakes. People mess up, no matter what their name or status is. The world will never be perfect. The woke mob are out of touch with reality. If they went outside of the US or Europe, reality would hit them hard.
I liked The New Adventures of Old Christine! I thot it was funny. Watched quite a few episodes of it!!
love Christine! great show!!
Seinfeld is probably the very best sitcom ever made
JA - saying cricket was gay because of the pitching?!! mad as hell when you actually see how Cricket players pitch...a lot more difficult than baseball
"You're funny. I'm interested"
Ohhhhhhhh that's exactly right! Comedy is fundamentally supposed to joke about reality.
I swear as a society were gettin way too sensitive…there is s line, of course (like what rant kramer had on stage was 100% not cool and way over the line) but come onnnnnn some of what ppl let offend them is just silly
Forgot he was on Benson
People who hate Seinfeld don’t realize that without him there’s nothing. Like him or not he’s a genius of comedy.
Kramer's rant was one of the best bits on seinfeld
you forgot Julias "the new adventures of old Christine".
What is a playful heckle?
peaceful riot
Seinfeld for the win
I loved The new adventures of old Christine :)
The New Adventures of Old Christine was a stupendous show.
i so wished they would relaunch Seinfeld there is soo many things they could make fun of today
Kind of fall like a souffle...
Yup. And even though it wasn't cancelled, NBC didn't want to do another season. The whole, well it's only for a year ending, was meant to push the network into greenlighting another year. They did not and good on them.
That was the point I always figured. That through all the episodes they never learned anything and was still the same selfish ppl they always was the last episode is literally a repeat of the first episode to back that up more
Oh yeah? I thought NBC offered Jerry like 25 million to do a 10th season and he turned it down?
That commotion about calling cricket gay.. just kill me.
Literally on one of these action needs an apology.. all good people
We all make mistakes.
Funny how you say people now are sensitive lol, people like you get offended by everything that doesn’t fit into your viewpoint either
Americans are the only ones getting offended at everything. Political correctness will ruin that country.
Before Veep, she had success with the very funny show The New Adventures of Old Christine
A few shows. She doesn't do a lot of research.
Cookbook recipes can not be copywritten. The accumulations can, though.
“gay” is such a fun word to say. I’d never say it to anyone who is actually gay tho, because I wouldn’t really mean “homosexual”
You forgot to mention, The new adventures of old Christine.
Woke attacks on Jerry are disgusting. It is time that we crush these manipulators and stop giving them any power. I like Jerry even more because he didn't cave into these baseless accusations
I think it's inappropriate to heckle comedians onstage. They're working, entertaining you. Imagine if opera audiences heckled the lead soprano. You can't even cough or sneeze at an opera or symphonic concert.
Even though I never watched this tv series, "The New Adventures of Old Christine". It lasted about 4 years.
"Viterol" or "vitriol"?
It’s comedy. Screw the rules.
Seinfeld is 100% right about woke pc fascists destroying our ability to interact and laugh.
"Viterol" - er - i think you mean "vitriol"...
Viterol sounds like an old time patent medicine.
Indeed , a staple treatment for all ailments.
I feel the need to drown myself in Viterol™ to get through this squeaky frog chew toy nonsense.
"playfully heckled", ... no.
what about the new adventures of old Christine? So far 3 of the main characters are in the MCU universe.
Funny how Elaine went on to be more successful after seinfeld in comedy and she was my least favorite character....
Apart from not being scandals, why do we expect famous people to be perfect?. We are all just human.
I love this show
This makes me love them so much more.
Really read that as 'sandals'
Elaine and George were the 2 people were hard to work with..it wasn't susan.....remember whenever Kramer walk in the first scene through the door and the audience would clap..it turned out that George and Elaine where fuming in real life..so they had to stop it.......smh...and remember when Jerry was on stage at the Kennedy Centre for Julia...what are the Odds that Kramer and George didn't show up??? something to think about..even the cast members on the show Christine with Julia,, couldn't stand her so....susan in my Opinion wasn't the problem
George and Elaine would be married now and fighting together just like George's parents and Kramer would be their butler. Jerry would still live in his apartment watching episodes of Superman, and now teaching writing at NYU.
2:27 - Vitirol? It’s vitriol!
Someone should make sure the script is free of spelling errors before handing it to the broad to read.
