Where did you hear about Rosie O'Donell? That news to me. I did hear that Patricia Heaton (Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond) was a finalist to be cast as Elaine. I believe JLD was the perfect choice.
Without Jerry jokes and Larry writes, the show would never have been funny, so... fyi sometimes getting older is losing intelligence because of dying nerve cells
I think Jason Alexanders interview was so detailed and raw once it hit the negotiation area. Such interesting insight on the business side of TV networks. Ultimately he does a great job of telling people to know your worth and how to be observant.
Seinfeld was the first sitcom I started watching when I was 10 years old. It was mine and my moms favorite night of the week. Back when you actually had shows to look forward to. I’m 41 now and still have it in my “continue watching” on Netflix. It never gets old.
I’m 43 and same. My parents are immigrants from Colombia and English was a distant 2nd language for them and they still loved and enjoyed and understood the subtle nuances of the jokes.
I just turned 40 and have been watching Seinfeld since around 1997. The show has constantly been with me ever since. The episodes aired a week later than in the States (I was in northern Europe), but I always made sure to tune in. I also remember taping a few episodes on VHS 😄 And I later bought all the Season boxes on DVD and continued watching the show through the years. When I moved away from home and left my parents I only had a bed and a tv for the first couple of weeks and the Seinfeld DVDs was what comforted me. that and Stallone's Rambo trilogy. But my mom was oblivious about the show, I don't think she even knew it existed. My dad didn't understand the show at all and changed the station right away if it was on. If he came home and saw me watching it he would always ask me 'how can you like this?" with a bewildered look on his face. The Seinfeld show is such a huge world of endless things to discover. The DVDs brought so many interesting Inside Looks and the episode commentaries were fascinating to me. And UA-cam has so many interesting videos, like videos with compilations of recycled actors that you see in the background as extras, the same people walking around in the background in scenes, some of them in 50+ episodes, things I never would have noticed on my own. Or videos editing together all 'Elaine's shoves', or all 'Kramer door scenes', or all the times we heard Larry behind the camera, or that video where someone compiled all the movie references that were on Seinfeld and placed them next to the episodes, all the hours of bloopers, the fact that so many in the Seinfeld cast was on various Star Trek shows (I think it's over thirty actors, maybe even more). I could go on and on..
@@RIUUI007 I’ve never owned the dvd’s but that would be cool to have the set. I bet there are some really cool extra stuff like cast commentary and backstory on the episodes.
Yes. Best ones end enough "soon" if you will. Everything has to end sometimes, better when it still good. If they beat the dead horse, it gives bad taste on mouth and then that effects the way we think about the show afterwards. IMO.
It's hard to see George in Jason Alexander he is so intellectual and well spoken just brilliant and while he is speaking i don't even think about him being George, He's an amazing actor!

Yes. As a happily married man, I can say that she is stunning in this interview. I couldn't focus on what she was saying. I actually only clicked on the video because of the still image of her in the thumbnail.
Seinfeld is the most timeless series in the history of television. Still as relevant and funny today than it was the day it aired. And it alway will be. Absolute genius.
Seinfeld was and still is the BEST TV SHOW!!! There's other great ones!... it cant be topped. I've seen every episode over 100 times. Still funny and always quotable in soooo many situations! Pure GOLD!!
I can sum up in a few words why the show worked: We all saw a little bit of ourselves in the characters. I've had so many Larry David / Costanza moments it's unreal, as well as many of Jerry's. I even had a Krameresque friend, and I think most of us have.
I've got to love and respect Jason Alexander. It's the 2nd or 3rd time I've watched his interview, and it's as fresh and engaging as ever. What a brilliant and lovely man !!
Damn, this is great. The show ended 8 days before I graduated from college, and was released into the world. Such a meaningful show about nothing! It brings me so much joy, even today! 23 years since it ended, 32 since it began!
I loved this show since before I could understand and relate to half the material , it gets better as you get older. I've never re watched anything more than seinfeld. I was lucky enough to see Jerry when he came to Perth WA a few years ago . It was gold jerry , gold.
Thought I knew everything about Seinfeld, but never heard about the contract negotiations in such detail. Really well explained by Jason. And they made up for it by getting revenue from the DVD sales!

Yes, Jason, they were people overseas laughed, laighed a lot. I had not put a foot in U.S., had no idea on an ordinary daily life of a New Yorker. I always found myself laughing to tears!!!! I've started watching again.
Not only was "Seinfeld" about 20 years AHEAD of its time in terms of the comedy and subject matter, but when you combine that with the simply perfect 4 main cast characters, it made for theee funniest sitcom ever, hands down. It just never gets old. #timeless #comedy #original
I find that the greatest comedic series have three elements: great writing, great characters, and great humanity. It was certainly all there on Seinfeld. I'm not a television watcher, never mind regular series, but every once in a while, greatness comes along, shows like Mash, Cheers, and Seinfeld are three that have it all in place. GREAT interview, btw. Interesting to see these guys with their comedic guards down just being themselves. Good stuff.
Well said Frank. I think the writing is the most important thing in reference to a comedy. I also fell in love with Th Goldbergs and found most of the shows to be 💯%.
I am one of the lucky people who did not watch the show while it was aired, so I had the chance to discover it and have a run through all nine seasons in a row. What a perfect show...
Ya me too,,I didn't get it, it was about nothing,,so I gave it another chance and my brother told me,,ya dude that's the point,, probably the greatest sitcom of all time fast-paced well acted
Amazing show, but much of the magic left with Larry. There was simply too much money at stake for the show to have ended after the peak (season 6). Nevertheless, still fair to say no other sitcom touches it. The show actually ran a PERFECT 'bell curve. The middle three years (seasons 4,5,6) were by FAR the peak of the show, pure Gold, straight A's. ALL of the BEST episodes came from those three years. The first 3 years were the build up (grade B) and the last three years were the tail, with (by Seinfeld standards) the worst three seasons. (grade C).
That is perfect. Because as you get older…the stuff you used to think was funny…turns stupid. But Seinfeld is always funny at all ages and I bet you felt like a whole new laughing orgasm that you never felt before…probably better than the first time you ever laughed.
@@delg1211I don’t know where this line of thinking started but it’s just so wrong that it’s laughable. Some of their best episodes of all time are in the final 3 seasons. Summer of George, Yada Yada, The Rye, Soup Nazi…. I could go on and on. The final seasons are fantastic.
Keep in mind, compared to most tv, a bad season of Sein is better than most. We both know taste is subjective, certainly with humor and there is no "answer", it is just opinion, and everyone has their own. I'm not surprised some ppl prefer the last three eps where the show gets a *little* more "slap-sticky". That has never been my preference. I think the majority opinion would lean towards my style of humor though, as the largest database of Sein opinion agrees and ranks *4 of the Top 5* in the juicy middle three seasons. The one exception is one you mentioned and is Awesome, The Soup Nazi. If you're interested, by voted IMDb public opinion, the top five episodes are: 1)The Contest 2)The Opposite 3)The Soup Nazi 4)The Outing and 5)The Marine Biologist 🙏🏾@@DPMusicStudio
Still funny some 25 years later and will most certainly resonance to people hundred years from now. The genious of Jerry and Larry combined with the comic brilians of Jason, Julia and Michael...a match made in heaven.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is brilliant as Elaine, period! The fact that Charlie Rose and the shows producers gave her so little time to talk and express her thoughts about the show is a grave irony (and injustice) given that he pressed her on her discontent with the sexism at SNL. He also asked if the genius of Elaine’s character should be credited to Jerry Seinfeld. As if she was just a mule. He didn’t ask the others that question. The sexism in this interview is undeniable.
I only lasted 14 minutes because the interviewer. He cut Jerry off multiple times, was yelling over both Jerry and Larry and was tying to finish Jerry’s sentences like an obsessed girlfriend. What they were saying was interesting, Charlie needed to know when to shut his mouth.
Read the comments here. Let me summarize: Michael is such a great actor, his physical comedy is genius, etc. Jason is so well spoken, he is such an intellectual man, etc. Julia? Oh she is stunning, incredibly good-looking, etc.
Jerry, it's still funny today. I just did a marathon and once again I loved it. Seinfeld is like the good old songs and music. They are still great today, no matter when they are from.
Perhaps Jerry's funniest retort was when Charlie said "some people say this show (Seinfeld) was the funniest show ever." Jerry says I love those people.
I came to America 1999 and my husband came 1989, so all he was talking about the show and what happened!! Now my daughter 13 wants to watch with me I told her I remember every episode, but we start form the beginning and it all comes to me
Interesting Jason Alexander saying they were negotiating for not having to work for the rest of their lives - in case they got typecast and couldn't get any other work.
i started watching it a few months ago after roughly seeing clips and it still holds up. and i was born in 2001, so its not like i was there when it was in its prime. it just has such a special cast that cant be replicated without it being obvious
Seinfeld hit that 1000. Every episode is extraordinary. I grew up watching honeymooners, I love Lucy, married to children, Martin, wayans bro etc. and my honest humble opinion…Seinfeld is the greatest television show in the world as to this day. There’s detail in the show that you really have to pay attention to that show you the extent of their creativity. Like in the episode when jerry is trying to buy the Saab from puddy, when jerry calls Elaine to patch things up with puddy if you look in the background you’ll see puddy just sitting there staring at nothin at all.
I wish I had gotten to see that show ”…married to children,…”? I was watching the other one that sounded a little like it called Married With Children. Bet it was almost as good though. 🤣🤪😇🤷🏼♀️
Really interesting interview with Jason. He was able to reasonably state his perspective on the money situation while understanding the legitimate opposition to it and the issues it caused.
Michael Richards - A modern day master of physical, slapstick who took a page from likes of Danny Kaye but brought it to new levels like Rowan Atkinson. The dying dying art of making someone laugh without saying a single word.
POOR MICHAEL RICHARDS.. HE REALLY WAS SO GOOD ON THE SHOW... SHAME HE WAS DESTROYED BY THAT MELTDOWN AT THE COMEDY CLUB.... I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM ACTING AGAIN....
I agree that he screwed up big time in that comedy club but the man has an amazing talent which we probably won't see again. Too bad people can't forgive and move on as if none of the rest of us have ever screwed up before.
One reason the show worked was the incredible balance between Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. None of them were too small, none were too big, and all funny for different reasons.
Still to this day, I watch the show anytime it comes on whether I’ve seen it 10 times before which most times I have because nowadays they’re mostly reruns… I enjoy every episode!
5:53 Charlie Rose asks Jerry, "Tell me how you and Larry are different in terms of writing." Jerry's response gives us great insight into how they were able to make such an amazing show, "We would take different positions. Here's where we're the same. We both love to kill it. We will work any amount of hours. Our desire to avoid humiliation is so great, in both of us, we so desperately did not want to be embarrassed by each episode coming out this week. And as the show became more popular the danger of that became greater and greater. We kept saying, 'Oh my God this thing is getting popular now we have to maintain this ridiculous standard.' So it became more and more terrorizing, to run in front of this train... [Larry] has tremendous energy, tremendous fertility, comedic fertility. I mean, tons of ideas. There are people in this world that funny things happen to. He is one of them."
When Jason Alexander was talking about their stand-off with NBC on raising their salaries upfront- I just kept getting the image of George going 'NEGO-TI-ATION, Jerry...we're nego-ti-ating'....Imagine this is the guy who played George Costanza....Amazing!
This is probably the most insightful, introspective analysis of the show by its key insiders that I have ever seen.

Where did you hear about Rosie O'Donell? That news to me. I did hear that Patricia Heaton (Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond) was a finalist to be cast as Elaine. I believe JLD was the perfect choice.
She is wonderful. My favorite is when she’s dancing in her pj dress trying to find the guys brown sweater. Her dancing there makes my day.
Yeah, she was great as Elaine, New Adventures of Old Christine was also excellent, and she is $ on Veep.
I love Julia Louis Dreyfus....in This abd Christine abd VEEP....National Treasure😍
Was workng long hours in Adv Agency the became a mom ~ years later like 2021 rediscovered & just keep watching ~
I also remember taping a few episodes on VHS 😄
And I later bought all the Season boxes on DVD and continued watching the show through the years.
My favorite show of all time, but I agree with Jerry that is ended at the right time. I still watch them over and over, and still laugh.
Yes. Best ones end enough "soon" if you will. Everything has to end sometimes, better when it still good. If they beat the dead horse, it gives bad taste on mouth and then that effects the way we think about the show afterwards. IMO.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
With Larry out of the picture I think they knew the writing was on the wall.
@@timothyball7502 Who's Ellen?
It should have ended when Larry David left. A lot of the last season was like zombie Simpsons
Jason Alexander is a very bright guy
Jason was refreshingly honest about the NBC deal..
Great compilation. Fascinating stuff with Jason Alexander.
Seinfeld (along with The Office) have gotten me through any and all lockdowns as laughter is the best stress relief....
It's hard to see George in Jason Alexander he is so intellectual and well spoken just brilliant and while he is speaking i don't even think about him being George, He's an amazing actor!
I am proud to say that I watched Seinfeld from the very beginning. Greatest show of all time.
I got turned onto it during the 1st season. I'm forever grateful to that person and in turn, I turned many on to Seinfeld well before it became a household name. Best sitcom ever!
Seinfeld along with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Greatest shows.
Found this interview series quite interesting.
And, Julia looks AMAZING in this!! She is so beautiful!!!
Yes. As a happily married man, I can say that she is stunning in this interview. I couldn't focus on what she was saying. I actually only clicked on the video because of the still image of her in the thumbnail.
@@markbrowning4334 She looks great in the thumbnail which is mostly why I'm here too :p
"It's hand-made." Jerry Seinfeld. ❤
Seeing Michael Richards be normal shows you how brilliant of an actor he is.
Oh yeah! So true
Wanted to see him redo his famous RACIST rant!
@@michaelt3308you have to bring black rude heckler who can disturb other but couldn't take racism towards himself❤😊

@@loupasternak oh I got a big problem Jerry!
I'm 51, i've watched many, MANY "sitcoms". Seinfeld is by far the best. It's my go to sitcom when i have nothing to see or i want a good laugh.
Pure GOLD!!
Definitely! I quote Seinfeld quite a bit.
Same ✋🏻
George to me was so magical, his hysterics and most of all his subtle expressions, Priceless! These guy’s all were beyond Great!
Best sitcom ever! I saw Jason Alexander do a show in my hometown and he did a one man variety act. That man is brilliant!
Rose can't stop laughing interviewing Larry David. Don't blame him. Larry such a gem.
22:05 Jason Alexander just defined perfectly the contrast between the LD era vs. the post-LD era.
Yeah that part was very interesting.
I can sum up in a few words why the show worked: We all saw a little bit of ourselves in the characters. I've had so many Larry David / Costanza moments it's unreal, as well as many of Jerry's. I even had a Krameresque friend, and I think most of us have.
No not at all.
THAT is the true magic of this show. EVERYTHING was relatable!
The glue is Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, as he said. Two iconic comedic figures that to this day are still producing laughs.
I've got to love and respect Jason Alexander. It's the 2nd or 3rd time I've watched his interview, and it's as fresh and engaging as ever. What a brilliant and lovely man !!
I love Constanza & Eileen so much. Thank you Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for bring those characters to life.
AMEN LARRY DAVID TOO WITHOUT HIM THERE WOULD BE NO SHOW HAVE YOU SEEN CURBE YOUR ENTHUSIASM I MEAN THAT SHOW WAS SEINFELD ON WEED MAAAAAAN !!!
george and elaine?
Eileen ?
One of the best sitcoms of all time.
*the best
I'm always amazed at how different Jason Alexander is from his character, perhaps more so than any other of the actors on the series.
Charlie Rose not letting Jerry answer anything. Lol.
right? it was frustrating to watch
@@Spluush he does it all the time. He’s clearly a drunk and an ego maniac. 😅
Charlie forgot that the show was about Jerry, and not about himself and his inflated ego.
He talks over his guests! Ugh!
@@thebandcoca can't believe how much he interrupts - Charlie got no comic timing.
Damn, this is great. The show ended 8 days before I graduated from college, and was released into the world. Such a meaningful show about nothing! It brings me so much joy, even today! 23 years since it ended, 32 since it began!
Comedy Central has heard my silent prayers and brought it back. Loving it again
This is excellent. Very well done. I liked all of it, but was pleasantly surprised in that I liked Jason Alexander's interview the most.
We lived in Vermont but my sons dad took him to NYC for a visit.
He was in middle school and we watched Seinfeld. He came home...MOM !!! I SAW GEORGE ON THE SIDEWALK WALKING WITH TWO NORMAL WOMEN !!!" 😂
Yes, Jason, they were people overseas laughed, laighed a lot. I had not put a foot in U.S., had no idea on an ordinary daily life of a New Yorker. I always found myself laughing to tears!!!! I've started watching again.
The early epsiodes of Seinfeld were rough. Kudos to NBC for giving the show time to find itself.
I enjoyed this, great insights and Julia looks amazing, so different without that wall of hair!
she is the most gorgeous in this interview.
Elaines laugh was totally contagious and UNSCRIPTED. Thats just Julia letting loose. 😂
Her wall of hair was HOT!
I've often wondered how they actually did her hair
If you're interested, by voted IMDb public opinion, the top five episodes are:
1)The Contest 2)The Opposite 3)The Soup Nazi 4)The Outing and 5)The Marine Biologist 🙏🏾@@DPMusicStudio
Excellent interviews. George is so right - who thinks of one of them without connecting them to the others. Always the 4 of them forever.
Actually it was Jerry who said it to him backstage.
Absolutely most brilliant casting in the history of TV
agree; the only other one that comes to mind to me is MASH.
Still funny some 25 years later and will most certainly resonance to people hundred years from now. The genious of Jerry and Larry combined with the comic brilians of Jason, Julia and Michael...a match made in heaven.
I always put on Seinfeld when I can't find a good show on Netflix.💗
Watched through it 3 times so far since its been on Netflix, its so great and its an amazing comfort show for people having a bad day 🤣
have to give credit to interviewer, such clever questions and to the point, he really did a superb job.
Just got done watching it again but 17 years later and still on point!!
That was Charlie. He often talked over his guests. I miss him, he was a great interviewer. But, he did overtalk his guests.
Read the comments here. Let me summarize: Michael is such a great actor, his physical comedy is genius, etc. Jason is so well spoken, he is such an intellectual man, etc. Julia? Oh she is stunning, incredibly good-looking, etc.
We have watched the socks off All Seinfeld Everything . The cast and guests are the ultimate comedy. Canada loves Jerry.
Ruth Moore Canada gave us many many comedians.
Still watching all episodes all over for fifth time still funny as first time. Best sitcom ever made. Thank you Netflix for showing us again.
Jason Alexander is a very smart man, very well spoken. Nothing like his character, a very good actor and impressing person.
The 1st couple seasons were similar humor to Curb, the last two seasons of Seinfeld without Larry were brilliantly whacky, great change up.
you know nothing and no one cares what you think
@@TheGrader600 What's the deal with you?
Jerry, it's still funny today. I just did a marathon and once again I loved it.
Seinfeld is like the good old songs and music. They are still great today, no matter when they are from.
Thanks for putting this together!
Your welcome/My pleasure. Charlie Rose had a great show with the best guests in the world.
Genius. They deserve every penny they made from that show.
Wow such a great interview with Jason Alexander.
Jason Alexander is very well spoken.
i started watching it a few months ago after roughly seeing clips and it still holds up. and i was born in 2001, so its not like i was there when it was in its prime. it just has such a special cast that cant be replicated without it being obvious
I just rewatched that one today! Like two hours ago! Didn't notice that one 😅
I wish I had gotten to see that show
”…married to children,…”?
I was watching the other one that sounded a little like it called
Married With Children.
I agree Seinfeld was one of the greatest shows, really wish that they did a tenth season
Based on what Jerry said in the beginning of this video, that's exactly how he wanted you to feel
With the merciful Thou Wilt Shew Thyself Merciful
That is to say, if you've ever messed up...
Now's your chance for a break from God
Check out his brilliant self-parody in season 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
These interviews were amazing. Thank you
Your welcome. Thank you for watching.
Goerge is such a brilliant character, and the act by Jason is just perfect.
*George *Jason Alexander's acting is perfect.
Jason Alexander, what a guy!! So eloquent and thoughtful
I love that Larry David is always Larry David
Still binging Seinfeld. I wait a year or two in between each binge. I will always love Seinfeld. ❤
5:53 Charlie Rose asks Jerry, "Tell me how you and Larry are different in terms of writing."
Jerry's response gives us great insight into how they were able to make such an amazing show, "We would take different positions. Here's where we're the same. We both love to kill it. We will work any amount of hours.
Our desire to avoid humiliation is so great, in both of us, we so desperately did not want to be embarrassed by each episode coming out this week. And as the show became more popular the danger of that became greater and greater. We kept saying, 'Oh my God this thing is getting popular now we have to maintain this ridiculous standard.'
So it became more and more terrorizing, to run in front of this train...
