I'm a big believer in "it depends on the horse" - one of mine grows a very fine, very downy winter coat that doesn't hold heat well and the other horse won't let him come into the run in. He gets a sheet at 40F and an actual blanket once it gets below about 34. The other is an absolute woolly mammoth. He gets a sheet if it's raining, and a blanket once it drops below 25 or so (we live in the south, so that's the temps my horses are acclimated to. For them, if it drops down into the teens, that's *really really cold*. They're also both getting up there in age, the wuss is 19 and the fluffy one is 26ish).

The only real answer is that you need to adjust to your individual horse’s needs. You’re totally right. People sometimes forget that animals are just as diverse as humans.

Wow, this is so true. When my family got our first horse, we were shocked by the strong and conflicting opinions from various communities in the horse world! 😅 Many years later when we had figured things out and both we and the horses were comfortable with our routines, we had a Karen come pounding on the door yelling at us that she would report us for "blindfolding" our horses during a particularly buggy summer. I'm not sure she ever fully grasped the concept of a fly mask... But thankfully she calmed down when we showed her that you can definitely see through them! 🤦‍♀️

It all depends on the horse, although when its raining I try to blanket the ones that appreciate it. I don't catch my horses to blanket them, i just go up to them in a pasture with it. If they are cool with it going on them they let me put it on, if not they walk away. It works, they aren't going to die without it :)

    Haha, this was great!
I have two extremes going on. My old girl is 29 and grows a winter coat like a mammoth, but she also struggles with bad arthritis and keeping weight on, and definitely rolls her eyes as I check on her and her blanket(s) for the millionth time. I do try and hold off on blanketing until about Christmas when supposedly their coats are "fully grown" but will definitely throw a lighter blanket on if it's a colder night or we had bad weather. Her son on the other hand grows a regular winter coat, but will NOT keep a blanket of any weight on unless it is well into the single digits. Rips it off, uses his overly large brain and dexterous teeth/lip to Houdini himself out of it, won't let you get close to put it on, has NO patience for it. Between being young, destructive, and not struggling, he spends almost all of the winter without a blanket.

Even into his 30s, my grade gelding flat refused to wear a blanket.
As a teen I thought not blanketing was horrible, and tried everything short of actual staples to keep one on him. He could take the blasted things off faster than I could get them on. 🙄
He stomped and pooped on them, and when I didn't get the hint, he started stuffing them in his water bucket 😒
Apparently rolling in the snow isn't nearly as fun when you have a blanket on 🤷😆
(I eventually learned to listen to him, especially on the trail!)

  • @cindyhuff8353
    @cindyhuff8353 3 роки тому +6

I love the approach on discussing blanketing.
My personal opinion is that it depends on the horse’s age, breed, and of course the temperature outside. It also depends on whether or not your horse is out to pasture or kept in a stall most of the time.
My AQH mare grows a long coat and looks like a big teddy bear right now. Our 32 year old Saddlebred gelding does not get as much of a coat, so we will blanket him if the temperature goes into single digits. The horses have access to the indoor arena for shelter, so that is another factor for us.

I'm a "it depends on the horse and where they live" kind of person. I put sheets on my horses when it rains and then goes below freezing. I put winter blankets on them when it gets into the -20's. They're sturdy northern horses so they can take the cold with their thick fluffy coats, but I've seen them shiver before and I'm not letting that happen again if I can help it.

This was great! I believe in not blanketing horses if they grow a thick winter coat in time for the cold weather. My mare has a nice winter coat and hay 24/7 so I don’t blanket unless it drops to 10 degrees and below. I try to let her naturally produce heat instead of blanketing all winter but some horses need blankets. when it rains a lot I put a rain sheet on but that’s just what works for me and my horse.

I did lots of research and have a winter 150g blanket for my mare. She grows more guard hairs than an actual coat so a blanket was a good option. Since it isn't too heavy its on when its below -10 or -10 with snow or hail. On super cold -40 nights she has extra hay and a warm grain. Especially when we have lots of blowing snow or a blizzard.

I'm usually the "don't blanket, they don't need it" (for most healthy horses that have access to some sort of shelter). I also don't like blankets from a safety aspect. I'll never leave a halter on a horse turned out no matter how hard to catch they are, and while a blanket is safer than a halter, its still something for things to get caught on.
I do blanket horses that I plan to take to a winter sale so they look sleek for that, and sometimes ill blanket a harder keeper if I'm struggling to get them to maintain weight during the winter if they're still in full work.

My mother is the one who will blanket no matter what. She has haflinger welsh crosses. Those fuzzy buggars are pretty much set of you give them a belly full of hay.
My girl is a high tb content QH, she runs hot. This means she stays warm but uses a lot of calories in the process. It’s much easier to keep weight on her if we blanket.
Our fourth horse is a Lipizzaner TB cross. He just plain freezes. Literally almost froze to death once. He had stopped shivering and was down with no sign of getting up. He probably needs a heavier blanket.
We usually only blanket if it goes to around 28 for more than two or three hours. There’s a lot of factors for us, how cold has it been, is there a chance of rain, wind speed, amount of hay in the barn, if we need to unblanket the next day how early? All sorts of things. If it rains they get blanketed around 35-40 unless they are shivering at higher temps.

We live in Germany and yes, I do blanket my ponies. Why? Because they live in an open stable and I don't want them to stand there with wet, thick winter coat in the heavy wind. So they get a thin rain-sheet on their backs to keep water and wind out. My islandic crossbreed also has a real winter blaket, because at some point during winter I have to clip him, if I want to keep riding and driving him. He get's such a thick winter coat that he's sweating heavily on the warmer days. This year I already had to clip at the beginning of october since his coat was already too thick for the still very warm weather. But since it's not really cold yet, he's still doing fine with the rainsheet. The weather here is really crazy this year and it's still too warm for already being near the end of the year! In the summer I put flysheets on them, because they get very annoyed with all these insects and I even caught them kicking them away this year. But even though I use only two types of blankets (+ the winter one) I own at least 10 of them. Two for every pony, in case something happens to the blanket that can't be fixed right away. Learned my lesson with that.. And I also needed to buy new blankets every year with a still growing pony. Now my younger one is able to wear them out until he's eighter grown out of them too or they are unusable. So far that system is working great, even though I always have the problem that the blankets are to tight for my older ones neck. He just has to much neck and shoulder that's not fitting into the size we need xD

Honestly it depends on the horse, what they are doing, how they cope with their schedule, but mostly it’s up to the rider. A quarter horse that works a ranch I probably wouldn’t blanket if it wasn’t an extreme exigent circumstance, but a show horse who is in extreme work is blanket to hell and back, light, medium, heavy, sheets, coolers, etc. etc. Kensington and back on track for the win.

My horse has always been a good doer so he's had a few winters without any rugs at all because we didn't want him to be too fat going into spring. Now he's getting older he doesn't hold his weight so well and he has his rugs. You have to adapt to the circumstances. Anyway, we have lightweight and medium rugs, two of each in case of rips and one extra thick one that he doesn't wear much as it's rarely that cold. Oh and he has a waffle rug for if he's sweaty after a ride and a quilt for the rare occasions he's stabled but that belonged to my mum's old horse and is thirty years old so I don't think we come under the heading of 'rug collectors'!
It's all very well saying they don't 'need' rugs but I know from experience you can save yourself a lot on the feed bill if all their feed isn't going into keeping them warm. The price of hay has almost doubled in the last two years so it's worth considering.

Our old gelding (29), who sadly died this january had many blankets (7 or 8) because he had not that much coat. But 3 of these blankets where fly blankets because of his allergic reactions to fly bites (very big edema). Our ardennes mare (13) has so much fur that she doesnt need it. She has 2 fly masks and thats it. Our newest mare (14) is a half blind comtois with just the bare minimum of muscles. So she spent the last year developing muscles but no real coat. But we think next winter she will have a fur like our other mare. She inherited all the blankets of our gelding but just gets one when the temperatures go under the freezing point. And she has also 2 fly masks.

Where I live we needed to concentrate on blankets in summer to protect the horses from sunburn and being bitten by bloodsucking flies. The blankets are either light canvas or shade cloth material (mesh). They also need mesh fly masks to protect their eyes. It varies in winter. I had two horses at the same time, one of which sweated up so quickly under even a light blanket that he would start to smell mouldy, while the other one shivered, grew furry and lost weight even while wearing his sheepskin-lined blanket

Learnt that they had in some country done a test over some months were they taught different horse races to tell when they wanted a rug, wanted it off or just wanted to keep it as they had, and they would every 2 hours ask the horses what they wanted. And almost every horse every time didnt want a blanket unless it was raining and blowing at the same time and it was -10C°. Ofc like i said there were some horses that wanted the rug more often or less than the others but most of them didnt want a rug most of the time and was happy with not having one on. Ofc you know your horse the best, but look for signs that tells you what your horse wants. Just because y oh are cold doesnt mean your horse is. They are really good at controlling ans changing their temperature and their coats are mostly waterproof as long as you dont clip them

We’ve never blanketed. The only exception is on older horses who don’t put on a winter coat and are very thin. We went to a barrel show once and our horse was the only one without a blanket. We also keep our horses on pasture year round. They get to hang out in their herd and be horses.

Mine is still growing. When he already has to deal with growing pains he's more sensitive to the cold. So then I usually put on a medium blanket during the night (he's outside 24/7) if temperatures drop below -5°C. If he's in good conditions and it's not a sudden drop he's fine without one even when it has -15°C. If it gets any colder than that I would put the blanket on again over the night

My horse has a sheet and a blanket.
There have been days when it's in the 50s and raining when she's shivering, so I'll throw the sheet on her just to keep her dry.
Blanket goes on when it starts to get really cold. But, if it warms up, I take it off of her.
When I needed a new washer, I got a front loader so I could wash my own blankets. I also do my own repairs. And I use the spray cans of water proofer that's sold in the camping section of Walmart to waterproof it.

A friend of mine has a horse who has to be blanketed, simply because he doesn’t grow a winter coat- at most it will get a tiny bit fuzzy. They think it was due to the fact he was spoiled before they got him, and was blanketed most of the time, so he never really needed to grow a winter coat. Now his hair just lays flat, lol.

Our young and healthy horses just get more hay, no blankets. Their coats are designed better than a blanket to protect them. Our 26 year old has a pretty good winter coat, but we put a winter blanket on him when the windchill gets below 10 degrees. He definitely is happy to get it off when it warms up or the wind dies down.

love this video. As a person who blankets their OLD ARABIAN that starts to shiver when it's 10°C I get so much flag for blanketing him but I don't care. He gets very pissy and annoyed if cold and he also loses so much weight, so yeah. I see more horses that maybe could use a blanket someday than "overblanketed" horses around in my area.

I blanketed my Gypsy cross gelding last winter (he was not a fan of the freezing cold weather) my pony was totally fine with it all, and she has a very thick & fluffy coat. 😊 We just had a cold front come in two nights ago and we had some ice & snow and I actually had to blanket my pony for the night! In my opinion It really depends on the horse and the weather conditions.

When I rode 5-6 days a week all year round I blanketed so they didn't grow a winter coat. Now that I ride on weekends I start to blanket once it's below 50 and rain. Once it's around freezing they will be blanketed until its always above 50 during the day. Rule of thumb I always have 2 of every weight so if one gets torn or whatever there's a back up.
