    “I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants & flip-flops... so I bought army pants and flip-flops”
    Lol, if my reason for buying an item is similar to this quote then I leave it in my cart and continue to think about it some more! I made the same copying-type mistakes at first too and so this silly quote has helped a lot!

    I don’t have a capsule wardrobe. I have a wardrobe. I have a color palette that works for my skin tone. I live in south Florida so I barely have a cool season. But I do travel north to see family and I keep pieces in another closet for cold weather. Most of my clothing is tailored to fit, half is secondhand, and a portion of it is 10-35 years old that I have kept. I don’t add to my wardrobe unless I take something out I am not in love with or needs replacing, like white t-shirts. I have been watching a lot of capsule stuff, but find that method doesn’t work for me. But I still enjoy watching. ❤️👍🥰

    I love the idea of having an 'in-between' space for clothes you are parting with - I do this and in my mind I tell myself to try and wear all the items within the next month to force me out of my comfort zone. A lot of the time I end up donating them or not wearing them, but on a few occasions I've discovered items that for some reason I've not worn in a long while, but I fall in love with them or I might style them differently and find it actually suits me perfectly in that way!

      That's a really great way to go about it! I think that is a really mindful way to expedite the process a bit, and it's always nice to have a "goal" in mind. I had a very similar experience with one of my sezane blouses. I even went so far as to list it for sale, but eventually, I realized "What the heck am I doing! I love this blouse!" 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting 💕

    One of the most useful video ever about capsule wardrobe, because it is very honest. I wish i could find more sincerity in yt minimalist/fashion/capsules video, because i really feel that most of the times they are filled if not with lies, certainly with half-truths that are even more dangerous. "Oh, my camo blazer, i can wear it in 10 different ways, it is so VERSATILE" (and then, some videos later, the girl declutters it saying "oh, i just use it for shootings, i never wear it in every day life")

    Wow! Every mistake you listed here resonated totally for me. I made the huge mistake of not giving myself time to really think about my personal style before purchasing “suggested” items. Also, I was on an impulsive shopping mission to fill out my capsule wardrobe ASAP. I felt guilty about these mistakes, but have learned so much over the past two years about what clothes work for me. I heard about your channel from Alyssa Beltempo and love your content!

    These are so on point. I put some garments in quarantine too. I also started writing down all of my pieces in my planner and about midway through if I haven’t worn an item I put a dot above it and note to make it work. If by the end of the season I only wore it once, I put a box around it and it goes to quarantine; if I never wore it it goes out of my home. This is my fourth season to have a capsule and I find that I really like it. I get to rotate through my clothes more often and I love setting a color palette for each season.

    Hello thank you for acknowledging Los Angeles weather. I have a handful of wintery sweaters because we may get maybe two weeks of winter. All of my sweater and cardigans are year round split into spring/summer and winter/fall colors. Everything else are colors tops I can wear year round in short or long sleeves. Basic jeans and pants in beige, Navy, black checkered and black.
    Just saw another one of your videos and I too do not get much wear of a white basic shirt, but if the shirt is colorful or chambray I tend to get a lot more wear out out it. So what I did was buy a light and dark chambray shirt, olive, beige and stripe with blue. I have 5 separate tops to wear with either jeans on casual Fridays or with my basic bottoms.
    What I have discovered, like Audrey a la Mode is I love navy. So I invested in 2 Navy casual blazer that again I can wear year round.
    My home/weekend life does not match my work life so I still have a hard time balancing my wardrobe. Although I have been a lot more thoughtful on what I bring in.

    My mistake was also to imitate Signe's style. Then, I realized I really loved color - totally opposite to Signe's wardrobe. I ended up with boring clothes I don't gravitate to.

    Superb advice. I had to re-buy a dress I sold a few years ago after a declutter as I realised I missed it so much and it was part of my overall style. The problem is there are sooooo many great influencers out there with great style you really get sucked in and want to copy that style ! X

      @LaurenWMcKinney  4 роки тому

      Hi Kerry! Thanks for watching and commenting. So glad you enjoyed the video, and even more glad that you were able to find the same dress! And yes, I totally agree. It's taken me awhile to realize that I can let myself love someone else's style without transforming my own. You can also "absorb" parts of other people's style without copying them exactly :).

    Such good illustrations - love 10:33 - my last trip to the consignment store, I, for the first time, was tempted to take back the items they chose but I knew I wouldn’t wear them. But the items they didn’t take I actually have worn more. So now that I have them back, I’m actually planning to wear them again and just let them go when the time comes. I actually feel a lot less wasteful keeping them and I think I’ve hit the sweet spot now of having everything I need / want for the most part! At about 150 items now, I was able to color-organize my closet and find even more ways to wear things I hadn’t worn much. So glad I kept those items that looked good but I’d been “saving” too much!

    I’m now getting into capsule wardrobing and here are a few things that are really helping me create my own version of this.. #1 identify what your style is? For me, it’s classic, timeless pieces that lean preppy. #2 color theory if you will.. I was lucky enough to find Carol Tuttle’s Dressing Your Truth. It’s based on face shape and personality and through that, you end up determine what your colors are and patterns that suit you. I thought it was crazy until I tried it. As many of us do, we gravitate towards greys, blacks and creams as our “neutrals”. Unfortunately, for me who is a type 1 in her color theory, none of those colors look good on me. Guess what, they don’t!! Colors with white hues are what look best on me. While black is a staple for most, Navy is my basic deep toned color. Having less doesn’t have to be boring, it should still represent you and your personality, while still being able to make it all interchangeable.

    Yep, I’ve had my own share of big oofs, as well. In my enthusiasm for my capsule wardrobe, I’ve hastily - and now regret - donating or selling a few items. I think I’ll take your advice and put away any clothes in a closet for a couple of months before parting with them.

    I am guilty of all above. But I have to say trial an error got me to a wardrobe I love. I am a creative person and like a lot of color as an accent. I have 2 white button down shirts that I live in theory but I never reach for. I wear black and navy(denim) but with a bright or bold blouse, silk cami, or graphic tee and always with a third piece ( blazer or long cardigan). We forget that this is truly a journey. Thanks for a great video!

    Excellent advice! I started my wardrobe journey a little over a year ago and I made so many mistakes just like you. My very first style icon on UA-cam was Audrey Coyne and I tried to emulate her style as it matched my own. But yikes I made so many mistakes as some of the pieces just didn't look good on me and I wasted money. I will try Poshmark to sell some of the pieces.

    • @LaurenWMcKinney

      Hello! Thanks so much! I am convinced that everyone has to make some of these mistakes in order to learn, even if people like me try to warn them! Audrey Coyne still is such an inspiration to me! But yes, it's easy to admire someone so much that you forget that pieces need to look good on you and not just on them. Poshmark has been a good friend of mine. WIshing you the best of luck on your capsule! I hope that you find my channel a useful resource 💕Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰.

    The biggest mistakes I've made in capsule wardrobing is trying to incorporate so-called "must have" basics that don't flatter me, such as breton stripes and white jeans, and discarding items that I love which aren't "on trend". Skinnies going out? Patterned jeans a faux pas? Color is dated? Too bad - I'll wear what I love, and what flatters me.

    • @LaurenWMcKinney
      @LaurenWMcKinney  3 роки тому +1

      Great great points! I'm going to make a video soon about how to choose your own basics instead of listening to what other people say! I have some pieces that are "basics" that I ended up not wearing.

    “Capsule Wardrobing Journey” is enough of a mouthful that you only need to say it once. It doesn’t need to be repeated for every paragraph and bullet point. Easier for you, easier for your audience. 🙏
