This is common in other counties such as Australia. I too think it’s stupid and believe that they’re going over the top, but it is possible for food to contain bugs and their eggs. If they enter the US and aren’t controlled they can wipe out entire species of plants and other bugs. Here in the UK, this has happened with Tarantulas hiding in bunches of bananas.
I do not have any issue with food confiscation EXCEPT when you take a vacation outside the USA it is nearly impossible to find out what you can't bring home on your return a week or a few weeks later. There is not one iota of user friendliness in the U. S. Customs website and it is extremely rare for a seller to even ask which country do you intend to eat this in? When we went to Europe a cheese was confiscated upon our return because if contained bits of ham. In practice the confiscations are ineffective at doing more than reducing the risk of agricultural pests and in some cases the human equivalent of an animal disease that might be in the never US inspected food product. I wish instead the customs service would just run all food though a line that ionized it with radiation to make it safe to bring into the country. That would kill any agricultural pests and with enough radiation is would even kill the seeds, while still leaving the food to eat. Heck I couldn't even find out if I could buy diamonds when in the Netherlands and use our duty free allowances for them.
Why would they confiscate expensive serrano ham from Spain D: Especially considering the fact that EU food regulation is better and stricter than American food regulation :/
Lame they are to strict on what you can bring in fresh vegetables ok but the packaged foods really? I had ramen taken from me from Japan because it had chicken scared of bird flu really dumb I ate alot of that in Japan I'm not sick its dryed and it's just powder chicken
Giant Waste. Why not donate the non-perishables? I'd bet half the things they confiscate are only on the "blacklist" because they just want people to buy the over-priced airport food.
I hate it so much when bureaucracy gets like this. You get your exotic fruit destroyed, just to go into the city centre and find the same thing, from the same place, in an Asian supermarket.
I understand the significance of this job, but I don’t understand why they use a stream of water and a grinder to destroy the produce. Wouldn’t an incinerator work better?
m taufiq gani putra Why do people think we eat dogs. I don't know any person that eats a dog. It's just disturbing and gross. And if people do eat dogs it's probably for extreme situations of starvation and survival.
AVeryHappyTeddyBear Your key word is extremely "rare". You have a one in a million chance for something to go wrong and you are going to lock everything down, just because the risk is there? When you eat food, you always have a chance of getting a food borne illness. Should you stop eating in that case? That's a terrible argument. So stop shit-posting it.
AVeryHappyTeddyBear classic CDJ isn't even linked to contaminated beef. What are you talking about? Not to mention that it's vCDJ that is transmitted through meat and is rarer than the original. Most people who contract CDJ inherit it from their parents through viral DNA replacement. Which brings me back to my original argument. It's so rare (a literal less than one in a million chance) that even lifting the restrictions wouldn't suddenly cause mass infection. It's transmission is very difficult. So why take annoying restrictions against something that literally occurs once in a million.

Basically a massive food waste. Very sad.
+shanyaraleonie It would be a bigger waste if a fruit-fly got into the California citrus crop. Oh wait that happened.
+shanyaraleonie The whole point is so that other plants don't die, if you think that it is a waste you don't have a problem with these people you have a problem with the people sending the contraband in.
+shanyaraleonie The waste comes from idiots who are unaware of importation laws.
+shanyaraleonie Yeah, that's right, let's just let all the insects and diseases into our country to destroy our agriculture, that would be much better than wasting a (relatively) small amount of food.
+shanyaraleonie Yeah, why'd those people even bring the food to be wasted? Don't think I've ever brought food to an airport before.

How does getting rid of perfectly wrapped salami protect American agriculture?
+truhls No, it wasn't because of mold, it was because of a contagious viral disease that affects pigs in Italy, Swine Vesicular Disease. The ban was partly lifted in May 2013 after several regions of Italy were declared disease free by the FDA, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Piemonte, and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. These areas produce the best salami.
truhls I appreciate this answer. I honestly did not know. Truthfully in the end, it won't stop the loss of organic life that is taking place around the world. Take a look at this: www.churchfreedom.org/stewardship-of-the-planet-earth/
+Joshua Kenny-Greenwood Italian salami was banned because of viral disease that affects pigs in Italy, Swine Vesicular Disease, that virus can even survive in cured meat. It was not because of mold.

Even bringing foods from other country is prohibited. We live in the same planet.
