Will the molding still come off this easy if it’s been on the car for a few years? Or do you think it would ruin the paint?

Generally if its only a few years old your ok but there is always a little risk.

What kind of paint protection do you recommend? Is it like a polish or wax?

Hey LapisWRX 2019 you can use whatever paint protection you would like.
We used Detail King Jade A70 on this vehicle and love it!

If you were to try polishing it by hand, what kind of compound would you use? And is this safe to do on a 15 year old vehicle?

I would prolly use the same Menzerna 2400 compound I used here with a nice quality low pile microfiber towel. It would be hard to get a perfect finish on black paint but would have atleast remove the outline on this car. We do this fairly often on older vehicles but the older they get the riskier it is. Super high risk on older vehicles or vehicles that have been resprayed. We see fairly often respray jobs that the body shop just sprayed over the original side moldings and when you go to remove the side moldings it opens up a can of worms. Another example is a 04ish F250 with these, commonly has paint that peels easily under these side moldings. I am guessing from dirt, water, and mud just laying behind them for years ruining the paint.

Customers that have the higher risk vehicles that may be older I will tell them to try removing themselves or make them sign something before I remove them. I always tell them the very worst case scenario which would be to do either a full respray of those doors or else get new side moldings to cover up what's exposed underneath. Luckily we have not run into this much.
