This is the content I love about VINwiki - the guy gets it, unassuming, gearhead, comfortable storytelling and has real experiences to share. A lot of the guys I know who do restoration are like this. Not blowhard guys with puffery tales but more humble. I hope he'll be brought back again on the channel.

Oh man, I remember being glued to Tom's ferrari blog back in the 90's. At that time I was restoring an Alfa GTV2000, and though it was obviously in a different league it still presented the typical Italian car challenges. Waiting for an update from Tom was the 90's equivelant to a much anticipated UA-cam restoration video blog today. It was a huge source of inspiration for me and helped me get through my own demanding project. Great to see Tom is still in the Ferrari game!

In 1971 I bought a used 330 America from Luigi Chinetti for $4500. Yes, it was gorgeous but I was happy to get rid of it two years later because it was more trouble than it was worth. Now I have a Kia Stinger GT-Line and am delighted to drive it every day. In 1971 I was young and crazy. Now I am 81 and want a car that works every day with no trips to the repair shop.

In '77 at the age 19, I had an opportunity to purchase a 1965 Ferrari 330GTC for a mere $7500!!!! It was better known as the 4 headlight ugly duckling. Hence, they commanded a lower price at the time. It belonged to a Dr who was diagnosed with cancer and sadly, given a year to live. He lived in the neighborhood in Hancock Park - Los Angeles and had it parked outside his 4 car garage when I arrived. It was all original, silver with a red leather interior. The only odd thing he did was spray painted the wire Borrani wheels with silver paint! No biggie I thought. I drove it down 6th street shifting her nice and easy but noticed lots of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Of course my first thought was it was either the rings or valve guides which at 19, equated to lots of $$$$ to repair. I politely asked him if he didn't mind having it checked out to which he agreed and asked me to call him later that week. He even invited me to Porino's for lunch with his wife, but being a shy, I kindly refused. Well, I called him back the following Friday and he apologized and said he had sold it. Sold it to his mechanic which he hadn't seen in a few years and forgot he gave him first right of refusal....at least that was his story. Oh, a few years later, I was given a coffee table book of the evolution of the Ferrari V12 engines. Turns out, this particular engine design had small holes drilled into the cylinder walls for pre-lubrication upon starting. That's was the blue smoke I saw coming from the exhaust pipes. Ugh!!!!! I still remember the sound of that V12 on a beautiful Saturday morning. I know I was young and naive but the moral of this story is, know whats in front of you and make the purchase.

a SOUGHT-AFTER collector's item car is actually an excellent investment. If you bought one that was good condition during a recession many years ago, and you will sell it during a booming economy in the future, you will be surprised at the height of the price! There are men who have a hard time finding something else to spend their money on, who will out bid anybody at an auction.
Many years ago the Bugatti Royale that is now in the Henry Ford museum was in a junkyard waiting to be put in the crusher to be turned into scrap metal, when somebody rescued it. It's price kept growing, now it is SO high there is nobody in the world who can afford to buy it.
Years ago I told my dad to buy a Jaguar XKE, but he bought treasury bonds with his money. A few years later the price of an E type was more than double waht he could have bought one for!

I spent 7 months restoring a car that was not worth much and now i have no interest in repairs because of that car. We restored a 64 impala coupe base model. It was a complete floor up resto. Every single piece of body hardware was stainless, we didn’t miss a detail…..except the costs that were mounting. Without paint or interior there had been $73,000 spent so far on every part we needed and some custom items. We even had the emblems for a car that wasn’t painted. Towards the end we started seeing restored cars selling for 18-$25k. The owner lost interest and i lost the chance to see that car complete. I also lost the chance to see how the community felt about it. The car was sold for $10k and i know of just a few boxes that cost that much. I would love to see this car again but i have given up hope.
