I absolutely agree if you can't afford your dream car but it a possibility to build one for a fraction of the price why not, many kit cars are out there already and most people can't tell the difference.
I'm a month late... but, I'm doing essentially this with a 308. Speaking from experience, there's no chance it'll be sub $100k. Unfortunately, that bodywork alone costs a serious portion of that. The parts budget, if all the work was done yourself, would still likely be double the $100k budget.... Maybe more, depending on how true to Ferrari you want it to be, and how much you want to improve it. With that said, it's a SICK project. I considered the same recently... but am terrified by the price barrier. Maybe someday, though.
Yes agreed the price barrier is a big one. Original F40 parts are crazy prices and I would like to keep it factory as possible. Loving the project btw it’s going to be one epic car when you have finished

Definitely agree on the usability of it instead of a genuine one, some nice up to date turbo's and engine management and hopefully sound like the LM in the video 👌
Amazing idea/ project. Only thing may be the fiberglass panels. If you found someone that could make the panels of that molds but in kevlar or carbon fiber would take this f40 tribute to the next level of legitimacy
Would absolutely love to see this happen. Can’t imagine the pride of opening my garage and seeing the 512 and F40 as stable mates! Even if the F40 is a replica. Really hope to see this build come to the channel!! 🤞🤞
Go for it bro you'll never get another chance and you can use the ratas engine and box till you find an engine. wow, imagine that sat next to the boxer. It's a must most of the hard works has been done for you too.
This will genuinely be the greatest build in the history of UA-cam! And if you manage to do it for just £100k, then you could open the most successful restomod business in the world.
I did the same thing with the Porsche 997 GT2RS. I built an exact replica based on a 997 Turbo. I sourced genuine parts mainly from Porsche and also from some other Porsche suppliers, including the carbon front wings (costing over £6,000 each at the time). I did a centrelock conversion and the full interior including carbon seats, new roof, the list is endless. The car has engine modifications also. The project took me almost 5 years. I can now enjoy the car without the worry of it being an origonal car. I can honestly say it's completely worth it. Yes you will get the peanut gallery saying its not original but you will get 90% of the experience and 100% the same enjoyment of an original car
I would never be able to do this there’s so many questions one being, Is it a real Ferrari? I mean subframe and parts and molds from original pieces but at the end of the day, is this worth 100k+ ?
A friend from Monaco is turning his F40 into an F40LM! Already made the mechanical part, it is already with more than 900hp on the wheels! The project is getting amazing!
@@Ratarossa Yes indeed, he believes the car should be ready towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year! But just by testing the mechanical part before they started modifying the car's body part, it was already very impressive!
Go for it Scott! This would be an epic project for sure. I’m not sure you could do it for 100,000 BPS though. You’ll probably be closer to 150,000 BPS, but it’ll be the car you’re dreaming about and completely worth it. I’ll keep my eyes out for parts
Does the gentleman selling the LM replica still have access to the body moulds? That’s the key question. If so, you might be onto a winner. Would you sacrifice a 308 / 328 as a donor chassis? It’s absolutely do-able.
True. Mind you, I’m sure I saw a bare shell 348/355 on eBay a while back. Starting with a complete car would at least give you everything you’d need to get it running and rolling. My other worry was about availability of glass. The windscreen and that louvered rear canopy in particular. Side windows are relatively simply to get made up in Lexan.
Wonder if you could use something less desirable like a Mondial or 348 ? Bit like some of the less pretty 250s and 330s were rebodied as GTOs. 330s are now going for silly money though so it seems to have stopped.
When your build series begins, please please share the dimensions off the uprights🙏🏽🙏🏽 The technical manual has good information on the chassis, but less so on the suspension.
This would pretty much be my dream car too. Even if I could afford to buy an original F40 (and if I could, I would), I'd still love to build something that looked like an original, but used modern components. I know this isn't a realistic (cost) direction for your build, but can you imagine a visually perfect F40 replica with the underpinnings of the F8 Tributo... I can understand the cries of heresy with this whole replica idea; but aren't quite a few of the 250 GTOs that get raced actually replicas? Granted I understand they're replicas where the owner has possession of an original example.
The key to making a replica, I think, is to do it well and generally in the spirit of the original. Replicas have a bad reputation because some are truly terrible, but generally anything with a custom chassis and an engine with similar power is pretty going to be pretty decent (the cost of those meaning its worth making the car look good, even if its not 100% accurate). Ratarossa knows enough about ferraris, and has enough access to ferrari parts, that any build he does will do it justice. I think replicas of super valuable cars are a good thing, as the originals being worth so much means people wont drive them through fear of damage or mileage affecting value. You just have to do what you find fun.
This is exactly the way I'd love to one day build a Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary replica, again like you, even if I could afford the real deal I'd still have a daily driver replica. It would have all modern-day components, Audi 5.2 V10, Graziano transaxle, modern brakes with ABS etc, and most importantly be able to drive it comfortably without having to be only 5'8" tall. Oh, as well as a modern aircon system. Will it ever happen? Not on disability it won't. But damn we can dream huh.
I'm curious to see where Scott puts all of the cars and parts for the multiple projects. Maybe some Ferraris will be sold? Scott rents a storage facility?
Hi Scott another great video, I would love to see a F40 with a luxurious interior, one with all the toys, like electric windows, carpets, headlining and all electrics, ie windows, mirrors, air con, but keep the running gear as raw as it should be. I know that doing that is contrary to what the F40 is but it would be a great all rounder and even with the extra weight I’m sure with a modern tuned /built engine that weight would be norhing

Definitely an interesting proposition. Personally I'm more for the 512 project- it's the real deal whereas the 'F40' will always be a Ratarossa type but hey, it should be good to watch which is what these channels are all about!
You should go for it, building one from stratch will be very satisfying and the result will be a car that can be driven hard. I've seen a local F40 build and it's great to see it come together, some parts aren't that complex to make with today's technology, like cnc routers, pipe benders erc
I had no idea about how much parts overlap there were with other models. Could you make the 360 sound as good as an original F40 engine? That sound was INSANE! Great video. Exciting project concept
Yo be fait the CS exhaust is simply epic, my Ratarossa also sounds great. They all have a unique and amazing slightly individual sound. But the F40 LM build ..... well that has to sound like the clip

Hey Scott Just bumped into this video, Anyone doubting just how much fun this would be is a fool...If anyone has seen the Jonny Smith video of the 'fake' 250GTO then my point is made. I think you could do it quite efficiently you know enough about the parts to do it well. there are plenty of scabby 328's around that would be perfect donors, and a 360 engine would easily fit the bill for the power train. As long as it stays light and true to the Idea, then you could probably get a few panels done in carbon within budget. If you need someone that is a superb all rounder with fabricating from metal to cloth I have a friend thats a whizz. Just shout. Good Luck

i can see you love the f40 scott but a big but it still wont be one as some said down below a bit better than an old mr2........you might get some flack from maranello as well .
@@Ratarossa unless it’s a genuine f40, I don’t think you will ever truly happy. Been such a Ferrari enthusiast that you are don’t strike me as the type to be content with a copy/fake
There is a guy in nz who had done a f40 in your same idea, but he had a twin turbo 1uz(approx 750hp)in it, there are a couple of videos of it on youtube.
There is an unofficial Ferrari F40 LM in Thailand. Can search for "1 of 1 Silver F40 Found in Thailand!" on youtube. At the 6:40 mark, there is a walkaround for it.
This is Tack with Euro-American-Passion and I recommend that you go for it but there are so many 308/328 chassis around to use as a donor. GO FOR IT FRIEND. maybe find a slightly wrecked 308 or 328 to the build
That is slightly different though - the issue was from film makers objecting to them using the name Eleanor rather than the car itself. There are lots of Eleanor styled Mustangs around
In truth that doesn't matter that much as it's a replica. As long as it looks 100% legit and sounds close to what an F40 would then the mechanical could be anything he wanted.
16:10 This is exactly why my garage is full of 'tribute' cars (ok, and the purchase prices that I can't afford, of course :-p). The latest is a Porsche 997 GT2 RS 'tribute' based on a turbo. The originals a selling at prices somewhere at 1/2 an F40, but still way too much to thrash on a track day
I wonder if that engine you mentioned was in the car we saw going up in flames in Monaco a few years ago with some kind resident trying to hose it down from their balcony
Hi Scott. The common perception is that 'Ferrari' went back to basics etc as some kind of corporate decision or a decision from the Drake himself. However, the reality is very simple if anyone cares to listen to the interviews of the Chief Engineer: Ing. Nicola Materazzi. Link below. Yes, of course he was employed and representing Ferrari (had been doing so since December 1979), but the decision to go all paired back was mostly his individual choice, since Enzo Ferrari himself did not specifically set any requirements and FIAT management at Ferrari was not involved at all in the car: the bodywork etc was done at Michelotto and other parts at other suppliers. Since the 288 GTO Evoluzione was mostly a pet project of a few engineers led by Materazzi, and the F40 was initiated because Enzo Ferrari didn't want the car to be lying in a corner of the workshops (after Group B rule changes), one of the most famous Ferrari cars in history is very much made to the specification of its Chief Engineer, who had followed the genesis from the 288 GTO road car, through the racing car and back into a road car with the F40. Contrary to many opinions it was also never a reaction to any car like 959 etc, since the original intention with the 288 GTO was to go racing in Group B to test certain technical developments which would have been 'too fast for the road'. In conclusion, it's good to talk about the Prancing Horse badge, but it's also good to know something about the persons behind the idea of the car, since that goes quite far in explaining why many Ferrari cars differ in certain fundamental DNA: because the Chief Engineer or main engineers behind them had different visions of what is a sports car. ua-cam.com/video/AlX-kgJuzxU/v-deo.html
I like this idea Scott. Think you'll definitely need to finish the BB and the Spyder projects as this f40 will be a monster project.( in time) 100k will be very tight. Unless you use a whole donor car for parts and just replicate the "show parts" like, exterior & Body, wheels, brakes, interior. The engine would definitely have to be turbocharged. You're going to need a genuine f40 for reference & datum points, General dimensions. As long as the body is 100% accurate as in the project you showed, and the interior is as close as original as possible the mechanicals are not so critical (mostly undercover) other than being turbocharged. I'll do my bit and subscribe.
So welcome to the world of kitcars. A decade ago, people looked down on kitcars, as for nowadays, switch the word kitcar to reproduction or tribute car, it makes a world of difference... ( i have some projects in my shed as well ( countach and a diablo build )
Dare I say, there is a huge difference between taking a Pontiac Fiero and putting replica Ferrari body panels on it, vs. taking a Ferrari 308/328 and putting replica F40 body panels on that. With the latter, yes it is a replica, albeit one that is built on a car that was the basis for the F40. That being said, I mean no disrespect to anyone who uses a Fiero as the basis for a kit build; I have seen some impressive Lambo builds that are likely more reliable than the real thing.
@@charlesoxley7242 there is also a diffrence between reworking a fiero chassis to the specifications of a for example diablo or using a tubeframe chassis. There is also a difference in using fibreglass panels or real panels ( if i recall this vid, the panels are molded of a real one, so no ´real´ panels being used here ). Even so, only the ´paperwork´ of the chassis determes the chassis in the end.
Also there's a guy I watch on fb , Joe's fab . He made a vw beetle van and put it on a e30 chassis and build a old caderlac and put a new mustang . Does alot of stuff . Doing a old school ice-cream van at the min
Looks like a wonderful build. I think you might want to take a 348 or a F355 as your base car. The 288 GTO, F40, 348 and F355 all share the same wheelbase. If you alter a 328 chassis to F40 spec and ad a later style engine like a 360, the car can never be road legal in Europe. This may seriously affect the value of the finished car. If you take a complete rolling 348 chassis, ad twin turbos and do the F40 rebody your car will be road legal in Europe too, and may be easier to build. You also get to keep the Ferrari 348 title.

Can't wait Scott 👍👍
After hearing that F40 lm exhaust note I think you got me an interest I didn’t know I had
Brilliant idea retro mod. F40 🔥🔥🔥 let's go!
This is going to be amazing 🤩
i can see you love the f40 scott but a big but it still wont be one as some said down below a bit better than an old mr2........you might get some flack from maranello as well .
Wait and see buddy .... i think everyone will be VERY shocked at what I have up my sleeve
If you pull that off, this channel is going to the moon!!
Would be a really interesting one 👌 I’m just waiting patiently on the 512 being done
its happening
@@Ratarossa nice one because the amount of cups of tea ive drank while watching your vids I’m making some trips to the toilet 😂😂😂😂
Lol don’t forget about the BBi
My favourite car is the lexus LFA and Ferrari f40. Well done on making this masterpiece.
I am exited to see this rolling!
There is an unofficial Ferrari F40 LM in Thailand. Can search for "1 of 1 Silver F40 Found in Thailand!" on youtube. At the 6:40 mark, there is a walkaround for it.
3:00 casual McLaren F1 bumper in the background
If you do anything to do with an F40 you'll have a subscriber for life - it's also my dream car
Ferrari - well known for not suing people for building replicas.
Mike Kojima from motoiq is a suspension genius and engine builder
This Is Going To Be A Really Fun Series Scott!!
I'm Excited For You!!
Looking forward to seeing this happen Scott 👍🙂
This is Tack with Euro-American-Passion and I recommend that you go for it but there are so many 308/328 chassis around to use as a donor. GO FOR IT FRIEND. maybe find a slightly wrecked 308 or 328 to the build
Exactly that would be the plan.... in the process saving a wrecked ferrari
@@Ratarossa AWESOME friend, I do replicas as well full blown chassis but my dream is a F-40. I have built plenty lamborghinis and Ferraris
Always enjoy your videos!
This F40 Tribute Project would be awesome to see happen.
Cheap and Ferrari really aren't two words that should go together!
I know that much better than 99% of people and Ferrari owners. In this case when i say cheap its in comparison to an original at £1M or £3M for an LM
Go for it Scott! I know you can do it!
That video always give me goosebumps. Amazing build
Go for it, will certainly make amazing content.
Be careful, B is for build had his mustang Eleanor taken off him due to copyright infringement.
That is slightly different though - the issue was from film makers objecting to them using the name Eleanor rather than the car itself. There are lots of Eleanor styled Mustangs around
This sounds so epic! Hope you can finish it as close to original as possible. The engine sound is so good!
Amazing project
Only problem I see is weight , the fiberglass panels are a lot heavier and the 328 frame is probably heavier too.
In truth that doesn't matter that much as it's a replica.
As long as it looks 100% legit and sounds close to what an F40 would then the mechanical could be anything he wanted.
Just stumbled on this video. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with building this awesome project.
16:10 This is exactly why my garage is full of 'tribute' cars (ok, and the purchase prices that I can't afford, of course :-p). The latest is a Porsche 997 GT2 RS 'tribute' based on a turbo. The originals a selling at prices somewhere at 1/2 an F40, but still way too much to thrash on a track day
It’s been 3 yrs can we please see where you are at on this project?
Another Super Project!!
I wonder if that engine you mentioned was in the car we saw going up in flames in Monaco a few years ago with some kind resident trying to hose it down from their balcony
Now that's Entertainment!
Think you'll definitely need to finish the BB and the Spyder projects as this f40 will be a monster project.( in time)
100k will be very tight.
Unless you use a whole donor car for parts and just replicate the "show parts" like, exterior & Body, wheels, brakes, interior.
The engine would definitely have to be turbocharged.
You're going to need a genuine f40 for reference & datum points,
General dimensions.
As long as the body is 100% accurate as in the project you showed, and the interior is as close as original as possible the mechanicals are not so critical (mostly undercover) other than being turbocharged.
I'll do my bit and subscribe.
thanks buddy
The F40 Mutrrari mix all the good parts in and build a beast of a driver!
Let’s go! New to the channel sticking around to see what yappens
Scott what are you waitng for...go for it
This is going to be epic 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
cheers
Ferrari F40LM - Re -Imagined by Ratarossa.
Sir you have earned my subscription
Thanks Tony
Massive center tube in the passenger compartment as well as monstrous perimeter framing.Looks right.
Also there's a guy I watch on fb , Joe's fab . He made a vw beetle van and put it on a e30 chassis and build a old caderlac and put a new mustang . Does alot of stuff . Doing a old school ice-cream van at the min
You could hand laminate those panels out of Kevlar, wouldn't cost a fortune more and there would be an advantage in impact resistance and weight.
Looking forward to it. Sounds amazing!
Can’t build Ferrari’s but I’ll have a do at making the brews 👍🏻
top man
Looks like a wonderful build.
