So from my last video you know Scafell is my favourite Mountain here in Cumbria I have a whole different connection to that place for many reasons so for me to give Great Gable the accolade of Best Mountain shows how highly I regard it & even I can't argue. It Simply is the best we've got hands down. if you've spent the time to get to know her you know! if you don't know & you want a day of action then you're going to want to know because its a special place & you won't be disappointed
GG has got everything all in one stop Its got more gullies rakes scrambles hells gates & climbs than you can wish for you would have to visit seperate areas in the lake district to get what Great Gable offers and although other areas have their appeal and own uniqueness like jacks rake, lords rake, striding edge, sharp edge, pinnacle ridge they don't come close to a day on GG for me, Its steeped in History & is speculated as the Birthplace for English rock climbing as a sport
The features are unique the Napes range famous for napes needle threading the Needle & multiple climbing routes, Sphinx Rock which just amazes me how it sits there looking out across the valley perched in position still Intrigues me how it came to rest there & how much it looks sculpted like a face with another rock on top like a hat. Ive put the drone around the other side which is hard to reach & its pretty plain compared to the side its famous for.
Sitting at the opposite end on a recent hike around kern knotts I spotted in the rock another face which looked like a Cherokee Indian with a headdress on! Again looking out across the valley guarding each end. I posted it on media & to my surprise no one had seen it before so I"m claiming that one. The Valley Of The Gods
There's more Ridges than you can shake a stick at sphinx ridge needle ridge multiple ridges coming up from napes and a great climb up to the summit via the Westmoreland crags where my latest camp was situated next to the Cairn {click below for history in the link } a real rocky pitch under the top layer but I have some titanium rods that are absolute game changers for these pitches I used them above Broadstand & won't use anything else now until winter. its the second time I've done this pitch and the 13th time I've summited GG
It always makes me laugh when people say they've conquered a mountain Ive been up & down multiple routes on Great Gable you will see from the footage I get about and some places are too difficult to get footage from solo. The climbers traverse is my favourite so there's routes not even featured. As often as Ive visited I would say I've only covered a small % of the surface area on GG so we are merely acquainted it would never be conquered!
GG isn't the highest @ a shade under 3000ft but don't let that worry you it gives more sense of altitude & exposure on the right route than anything in the LD and gets the adrenaline going for sure & the views are immense
The camp itself I went up from Wasdale Head I chose the route up the western scree a tough route with 18kg of kit but just what I needed. Ive been down it a few times but never up & enjoyed the challenge the clouds parted on ascent & before I pitched the blue sky was coming through as forecast, golden hour was looking good I was kept busy getting shots with the camera & drone until sunset. food was on after dark & I went to sleep around midnight.
roughly around 1:30 the wind came in with a vengeance until 8am it never caused any issues apart from noise but I was awake until sunrise at 4:45. I made my way to the summit a short walk from the pitch Ive never seen cloud move so fast you could see mini inversions draped around Pillar & Great End but it wouldn't clear long enough to get any shots with the drone but I knew from past experience the conditions were perfect for Brocken Spectres you couldn't go wrong on the summit & back at camp as you can see from the thumbnail to the video..GG has been a bit of a hotspot for me for Spectres that's the 3rd separate occasion I've witnessed them here
So without further a do here's Englands finest GG Show casing what an epic Mountain she is like you've never seen her before. I know there's absolutely nothing out there like this video. Not by a self taught one man hobbyist anyway its my own style & passion that Ive developed over the past 2 years since lockdown I didn't even own a drone let alone know how to edit a video. You can't get this variety of footage in one trip you get what your given by Mother Nature on the day.
People say how lucky I am to see all this! I'm definitely not lucky but I am hungry for the challenge and witnessing scenes like these. You don't always get chance to fly the drone due to conditions but you don't need an excuse to go back to GG to try again

😂 don't know about that mate but I know I bloody enjoyed making that video and all my escapades collecting the footage from great gable its going to be hard to keep that standard of shots without multiple visits to places not sure what I'm going to challenge myself with next 🙏⛰️

unbelievable footage!! I did this hike this weekend!! It was unbelievable!! Best vidio with the best footage of great gable out there. I would be interested to see the route or GPX file of your route so I can copy as we went round the last bit but scrambled up some other different parts. Let me know if thid, would be possible.

Thanks Craig 🙏 loved all my little escapades on great gable its a firm favourite of mine, it makes it so much easier to edit when you have a tonne of varied footage there's quite a bit that didn't feature due to the track not being long enough and I actually extended that music by blending it in which I think I've got away with because I don't have a clue how to mix 😂

I love being outdoors always have and was always on the hunt for goldenhour, it used to be with the camera now its a drone and the best place to view that is up on those peaks exploring different areas then getting set up for the night and grabbing shots I just love the physical side and the challenge of it all aswell 👍

You definitely weren't wrong mate, that was epic, the music was class, suited it perfect 👌, what a place to pitch the tent too! the shots where you are on the edge look brilliant, and that closing scene when you were on the scree really shows how huge gable really is, what drone do you use? cos it looks really stable really for out, I always seem to get wind warnings when I go so far up( dji mini), again mate, absolutely class , loved it 👍, atb Mick
Thankyou Mick what an epic mountain GG is I've certainly enjoyed all my 13 visits exploring different areas. I love a scree run not so kind to your boots but they needed softening up 🤣 The music was something I had stored from months ago and not the one I had in mind for this video but that was too short so I added the first 3 clips and knew it had a good flow straight away but had to mix part of it because again it wasn't long enough so its good no ones noticed 🤣 My drone is a mavic air 2 mate I had a mini first and it was a capable little drone but I missed out on too much footage due to it being too lightweight it just didn't have the guts in this environment at altitude....The air 2 is solid I've never had a wind warning yet and it gets pushed in some strong weather I've got total confidence in it which means I can concentrate on the shots 👍

@Paul-of3ut Thanks Paul, really appreciate it, quite an old one video that but Great gable is timeless, actually only camped on there 3/4 weeks ago with some amazing views above the cloud to wake upto, The drone is a dji mavic air 2 combo much better than the mini series you can get footage they can't fly in due to wind.
