Hey all! Couldn’t help but mention, Nathan’s agreement with Nexus doesn’t require that he play the equipment. He’s welcome to play his Mark VI and Meyer as his primary setup, and the affiliate agreement just provides him a modest incentive to make content with the Nexus equipment, but the fact that he’s actually switched to this equipment (for now) is pretty awesome and a testament to (I think) how great the Nexus equipment feels. Sound and tone is subjective, and those of us who have played a Mark VI and Meyer for years (myself included!) know how beautiful the sound is and how partial we can be to that sound. It’s the gold standard for a reason! But I had a blast designing this saxophone and mouthpiece with Jack, and I think they both offer something truly unique and special. It feels so fun to play on the Nexus horn and piece and I’m glad Nathan’s been digging it too!!
I honestly liked your sound on the Meyer 6MM, there is a certain fatness and fullness with edge and warmth. The Nexus to me was brighter without the fatness or warmth.
My teacher would say the mouth has 2 rubber bands - one stretching up and down and one going side to side. usually our strong jaw wins over the corners of our mouth, so we have to think more vertically like stretching the vertical rubber band and bring those corners in. so more vertical would feel like a larger beak and more corners while horizontal would be a thinner beak and less corners
Generally, your mouthpiece should feel the same as a great embouchure, which should be as close to a perfect circle as possible. But human a tomboy isn’t made that way, and your bite muscles (verticality) will be different than your cheek muscles (horizontally). At some point you WILL have to a variety of mouthpieces to see which ones and which bores seem to match your natural muscle ‘signature.’
The Nexus sounds more grounded with a more focused tone. I like your sound better on the Nexus. I have also adopted the Nexus. I bought it a few months ago and I am really digging it. As I said in Shed Club, it’s the only mp I play now. (Except for classical I use the Selmer Concept, of course.) Glad you are also liking it. Chad and Jack are doing good things.
I think the mouthpiece is more important to the player than the listener, what you hear and the ease of blowing. Then there is the variable of reed strength
Guys who make it just play the one mouthpiece. Mouthpiece addiction will steal your immortal soul. I wish I just stayed on my BUNDY for life. Bundy was a fine mouthpiece and I never needed anything else. I love me an old BUNDY. We have a 12 step program for you mouthpiece guys. You got to say sorry to all the sax players you have wronged in the past.
There are 2 generation Bundy mouthpieces. The original Hard rubber models, with a made in France blank, and then the later cheapo plastic , almost a copy of a Brilhart Ebolin. These Bundy mouthpieces can be hot rodded, (opened up) to a .080" tip (Meyer 7MM .081")
Comparisons like this, in the studio with a good mic, aren’t quite fair. I think there will always be a bias toward the traditional Meyer. I like the Nexus here a lot, and I would bet that it performs better in a loud, live environment which to me is the real test.
Anything in the natural tessitura are better, more rounded on the Nexus, but the altissimo is actually flat(!) on Nexus and is way more pure on your Meyer.
Really enjoy your comparison format of short back-to-back phrases. Ignoring the extra moisture in some of the Meyer examples, it's a toss-up to my ears without a headphone. Curious how you categorize your huge mouthpiece collection? Dusty to damp? Bright to dark? Not ready for prime time to headliner? Library dwelling to on-stage? Benchwarmer to on the field?
when your playing body and soul, do you use the palm key D with no octave key when youre playing some of the beggining notes where it goes g Bb g a D f#
Hi Nathan- what reed and lig were you using? Listened on headphones and the Nexus is definitely brighter and with more pop to the sound. That may or may not be what you are looking for in your sound. I personally preferred the Meyer - at least to my ear your phrasing had more subtlety than with the Nexus. Also I would be interested to hear how you sound on your Mark VI in a similar back to back comparison. Happy St Andrews Day from Scotland. 🏴
What Tip opening is this mouthpiece? and how should tip opening affect reed strength? I just tried out a Vandoren v16 a6 mouthpiece, and ive been said that wider opening=softer reed, but when I tried my 3.25 legeere instead of the 2.50 I tried first, it was much better. but on my T7 for tenor I use 2.50, but why does the 3.25 feels so normal and good when it is a 6 opening on my mouthpiece?
Ahhh, this breaks my brain. What is the first transcription you play? I have transcribed and played it in the past and just can't remember the player...
Loudness is a result of tip opening, a Meyer 7MM will play louder than a Meyer 5MM. A hard reed will play louder than a soft reed. A Vandoren 3.5 green box java will play louder than a java 2.5.

stop the cap grant
its more woodsy Phil
As someone who hasn’t played more than 1 mouthpiece … idk what horizontally narrow means
I have played about 9 or 10 different mouthpieces and don't know what horizontally narrow means either.

like the sound on the Nexus! Much bigger and brighter!
Wow the Nexus was very very good at higher notes, I wasn´t expected that. I liked your sound on the Meyer 6M

The head turns are on notch just like always Nathan 😂
4:17 is lowkey killing 🤣
this dude played higher then my ear ringing on a saxophone!! killing player dude
You should do a video reviewing or going over all the mouthpiece you have in your collection. Just an video idea 😅
Dig you, Man. Dig Chad. Glad you are doing well.
Honestly, kinda like the sound of the nexus edge more. Both sound great though :)
Nathan playing that Patrick Bartley solo at 2:40-3:15 from PRINCE by Jon Batiste... noice
it sounds really classy i like that

claude delange vs concept pls🙏😩
You should add tenor mouthpiece reviews for us tenor players
Diggin the DH solo man
I just got a tenor spark mouthpiece and a custom mark six remake.
Nexus is a bit chunkier, and a smidge buzzer. I like them both. Both give the classic alto sound
Comparisons like this, in the studio with a good mic, aren’t quite fair. I think there will always be a bias toward the traditional Meyer. I like the Nexus here a lot, and I would bet that it performs better in a loud, live environment which to me is the real test.
You should compare it to the Jody Jazz DV and DV HR.
Anything in the natural tessitura are better, more rounded on the Nexus, but the altissimo is actually flat(!) on Nexus and is way more pure on your Meyer.
Stopping people from saying first day 1

Doing the lord’s work I see 🙏🏽
The Meyer!
Thanks! And 😂 it’s ordered randomly but you have given me ideas
It sounds like a bari sax with alto sax octave
REAL
And this is a good thing? 🤔
what's that piece at 3:09
sounds amazing
unless youre just improvising
know any more music that sounds like that?
Patrick Bartley’s solo on Prince by Jon Batiste! I don’t know more music that sounds like it; if anyone does plz lmk too lol
The Nexus seems to have a wider sound but the Meyer feels more melodious
when your playing body and soul, do you use the palm key D with no octave key when youre playing some of the beggining notes where it goes g Bb g a D f#
I like the Meyer
The Nexus articulates really really crisply but it _sounds_ like it doesn't want to participate cooperatively in the low register.
Review of a bss s series alto mouthpiece, please?

Hey Bill! Good to see you here. I was using the Boston Sax Shop black-rhodium stippled ligature. And I’ll have to try those comparisons sometime!
ahh the pat bart prince solo

Oh, got it. it's the Wonderwall solo of Paul Anka's version :)
I want to be able to play very loud, what kind of mouthpiece do i need ?
Thanks fam appreciate your videos
Loudness is a result of tip opening, a Meyer 7MM will play louder than a Meyer 5MM. A hard reed will play louder than a soft reed. A Vandoren 3.5 green box java will play louder than a java 2.5.
What size bss reeds were used in the demonstration?
Can you try Jody Jazz
Nexus for lead alto in a big band. Meyer overall.
yes sir
Hi
Nexus!
Is Jack Finucane and Jack Tyler the same person or what? I'm getting so confused with all of his alias
He recently changed his last name to Jack Tyler for personal reasons!
@@Saxologic Oh i see! Ive just seen so many different saying from man to man.
Hey😂
Meyer is clearly the winner. Nexus is not on par to be a competitor in this case.
mr logic
Meyer all the way, sorry
Nothing will ever compare to the theo wanne
Geez what are you gonna do with all those mouthpieces lol 😅
Meyer fuzzy and soft, Nexus clear and hard
Meyer still sounds better
it creates such a fat sound
