While some of the tactics shown in the combat scenes weren't strictly accurate, the violence *felt* authentic. I have seen movies that were more technically correct but devoid of weight and emotion. Pulled me right in. I was glued to my seat.
5:28 This use of music in the movie landed with me perfectly From all the discussion on "you can't make an anti-war film" the one thing that stuck with me was the notion that, no matter how dull, horrific, or sad you make your war film, if you include combat, you will have failed. Put as "someone will always see it for the fireworks". I am this way, and a bit shameful about it. While the photographers in Civil War are witnessing combat, war crimes, or their friends dying, the entire premise of the movie is they want to get "the shot", the story, or their quote. The photographers are there for the fireworks. "Say No Go" being played over summary executions is supposed to, I believe, pack that feeling into a nice little ball and throw it at your forehead as hard as it can.
Great podcast. Small consideration but an important detail - not real bullets, but blanks - People come here to learn both from an editor and how a director and his relationship with the editor work. It is a small detail but because of the nature of misunderstanding lately on sets and incidents, it important to note on the youtube timeline within the player that shooting on set with real bullets and blanks are two separate things. They used real blanks with the bullets removed.
He clearly said that they were blanks in the video... Just wondering, what do you mean "incidents" lately? Isn't it just literally the one incident with the armorer who was careless and arrogant and born into the job? The one who was angry about the effect that this would have on her career? Do you sincerely believe that this disclaimer was warranted? Was there really a risk of someone misunderstanding that portion of the video and then going out and using live ammunition in their productions?
1:38 He said BLANKS: blanks DO NOT have bullets. Its kind of trivial in a time stamp, but the difference must be understood. Real bullets are not just vastly different logistical issue in filming (i.e. using lethal projectiles), but they should produce different sounds, depending on where one is relative to shooting.
The whole movie had some great editing. The anxiety introduced throughout the entire movie felt SO real. I felt they did a great job capturing the essence of horror and dread that a modern-day American Civil War would create
They didn’t get it. I mean, part of me hated it but that was my response to the contents of war in the homeland. I hated the idea of it happening for real. The movie itself, however, was beautiful and shot/ edited so well. I hated that I loved it, if that makes sense? Idk, this movie was such an emotional mind-fuck.
@@christophercraft6683 yeah I absolutely loved it, same with like, the creator, I thought it was a cinematic masterpiece with stunning visuals and people just shit all over it , it was insane
It was a decent movie and I did enjoy it, but I was very disappointed after watching it. I was expecting a military action movie. The trailer made it seem like one by showing a lot of action scenes
Poor story telling. Poor understanding of its source. Tropes mixed with its pulling from current events, while not taking risks. What was the story that needed to be told? No matter what answer I’ve heard, the movie didn’t tell that story well. It’s weak. You can and will enjoy weak/poor movies. I have some favorites that I connected with, though they are technically and objectively bad. That’s the beauty of art. There’s is also a technical side to art.
I loved that he brought up the choice of song at the end of the college gunfight scene. How it worked and didn't work at the same time. The film's soundtrack in general is really jarring which I thought was an interesting aspect that I appreciate. Everything about the movie is unsettling and topsy-turvy. Why wouldn't the soundtrack fall into that same category?
Thank you so much for the privilege and opportunities… We love you and appreciate these great editors and mastermind you bring to the editing podcast 🫶💙
Thank you for this podcast with the Editor. My opinion, this movie had some excellent cinematography and still photography. Smooth transitions of composition with stunning style. This project must've took months of editing, something other film makers should take note of. And I'm sure that it can be argued, but that short scene while they were driving through the burning forest takes the cake. Again, my opinion as a photographer of digital and film of over 40+ years.
You guys will love this introduction the Music Channel The Weekend blinding lights the introduction is 10 out of 10 must see action in the first 17 seconds were perfect and why it was so good, and effects (By the way you don't have to talk about if you don't want to) that make it so enjoyable to watch that's in the car sense when the screen goes crazy and the song slows down amazing effects hope you guys might talk about it if it's good enough to mention on your channel. Just wanting to let you know anyways have a good day!
It was a pretty decent movie but there were some tonal issues - I wasn't sure if it was meant to be satire or dramatic at times. During times of tonal shift, I was brought out of the movie.
I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but the grave scene was certainly powerful. Post Trump assassination attempt when I saw videos of the photographers continuing to snap photos while shots rang out this movie gained a deeper level for me.
I'm gonna be the odd man out. I genuinely did not like the needle drop during the University sequence. COMPLETELY took me out of the movie. In general, I honestly felt the licensed music in the film (aside from the opening) was really bizarre and not in a good way.
I could understand that. I liked the music a lot, but a lot of it was just the enjoyment of the music itself. It definitely gave the movie a weird, kinda confusing tone at times.
@emanuelemanuel7038 I mean, it can be the point and still be detrimental to the scene. There's a difference between an artistic choice and deliberately making the wrong choice (as the editor admitted to in the interview). It's an interesting gamble, I just don't think it pays off.
Clearly people had higher expectations for the movie. To be fair, the movie isn’t bad. We just wanted giant mountains and got giant ant hills instead 😂🐜
I'm confused. Great videoo for sure. "We'll save the Washington sequence for later." "And then there's the Washington sequence..." "Thanks for coming." Video over. What???
Little semantic issue but they did not fire with real bullets, they fired with real propellant--powder--gas. The bullet is the projectile. Also, bullets have their own sound, a supersonic bullwhip crack. It's very unsettling and the movie could have used it but didn't, either bc they chose not to or they are ignorant of it. And since there is a scene in this movie where a literal tank cannon goes off 10 feet from our journalists wearing NO HEARING PROTECTION and their insides aren't turned to jello, I'm going to go with largely ignorance.
ehh, the De la Soul music seemed forced. Like "hey guys, let's put in some 80s/90s jazz hiphop that totally doesn't go with the scene because we're edgy"
Also the guy is wearing grading glasses. Glasses that make you really see differences in LIGHTNESS. So he can see the slightest difference in how "light" a color is. Skintones, maybe?
There are a lot of bot comments on this video. I'm disappointed I couldn't join in the discourse about the film and this episode but there are only a few real people in the comments.
i hated civil war's plot and overall thoroughly disliked the movie (it was a deeply mid story with not at all believable lore, and it was told poorly), however i will say that the cinematography and editing and tone was all really well executed. i just wish it delivered on the other things. it really would have helped a lot to have the civil war start in an actually believable way. which easily could have been accomplished with...well, literally everything happening in the country the past 10 years or so.
um, nice 'click bait', ie, deceptive wording - 'REAL BULLETS', huh ?!?? 'real blanks', you mean?? come on man, dont bs, if you dont know what u are talking about.
The editors really did a bad job making this movie. There was no character build, music were off, and I can go on. I was very disappointed to be honest
Liked the episode but also thought the movie was pretty terrible too tbh, I genuinely annoyed by the lack of substance with the female journalists, so boring. Normally like Garland's films!
Absolutely garbage movie. I'm still not clear what the message or the purpose of the movie was, I'm 100% sure that you hired zero people who have actually seen combat to help produce this because it's a complete joke, and it's obvious the only goal and message you had with this movie was once again to alienate half the country and drive more division.
While some of the tactics shown in the combat scenes weren't strictly accurate, the violence *felt* authentic. I have seen movies that were more technically correct but devoid of weight and emotion. Pulled me right in. I was glued to my seat.
