Yay! I love seeing you here cleo, I'm sure it means a lot to have your support moving forward. P.S. I LOVE your videos soo much, that I'm a doctor and I based my literature review and poster presentation on "Artificial Womb: Recent Advancements, Viability and Bioethical Considerations" at my university's scientific conference this year after being inspired by your video and it was very well received!

Subscribed. I’m not a huge Verge fan (or hater) but I have distinct memories of seeing some of your videos before Covid times and being really taken in by them. Your on screen vibe was charming and almost mischievous, like you were giddy that you even got to make the video. Review vids a not necessarily my preferred content, but I look forward to seeing you “outside” using tech as it is intended and if that same personality I saw years ago shines thru in your new work, I’m sure it will be a big hit. Kudos to you for finding your moment, your time to step out and step up. Go get ‘em.
That's true; when Dieter announced his departure from The Verge and among the website/content revamp, I felt it was a different kind of platform and slowly did not visit The Verge as much.
I never watched all the vids from The Verge, but if I saw you on the thumbnail I knew it would be worth a watch. I thank you for the time you put into the craft and the passion you display in your vids. I look forward to seeing the next era. Becca! Be Becca 2.0 :)
Hell yeah! Go Becca! I've seen lots of your videos over the years and I have NO DOUBT you're going to kill it going out on your own. I'm here if you need anything!
The Verge’s decision not to apply the same policy to other employees may be attributed to the fact that Becca is among the few individuals who posed a significant threat. On that channel you stood out for your quality and charisma. I wish you the best in this new stage Becca!!
I always see you commenting on the same content that I watch. Really great to see you supporting the content creation community. I'd expect nothing less from you though, your videos are top notch!
Becca good for you! Yaakov here, I spent 2 years of my life building something that in the end I don’t have control of. But it forced me to go out and create my own channel. Today we have over 1M subs and an entire team that creates WITH us. This is the start of your very own journey that will be 100% yours. You got this.
Always looked for your reviews on camera gear because you always came across as so thoughtful and authentic. Love your content at The Verge, and even though its legally 'theirs', that work is what you got you to go on and do it for yourself. Best of luck, subscribed.
Losing you and Dieter leaves a big hole to fill at The Verge. I really liked your A7C content (the whole reason I bought one!), always wondered why it stopped. Thanks for sharing with us why it stopped. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Becca!! I’m so happy for you! I’m subbed and all in! I’ve watched your videos on the verge more than anyone else! You were my favorite face and energy! I saw you over on Justine’s page and I was like “it’s Becca!” Congrats and I can’t wait to see what you bring to your channel! 🎉
I can't think of anyone in recently memory that I have been cheering harder for than I am cheering for Becca right now. You are going to absolutely kill it.
You're the only one I watched there, so it's good to know I'm going to keep doing it, but here. Congrats and enjoy the process! You're already great at this.
Dear Becca, Your farewell video on The Verge was really touching. It's been a while since I've been on the channel, but I'll always remember the first time I saw you. Thank you for sharing so many interesting videos with us. I'll definitely be following your future work. Best of luck!
I only found you recently on The Verge, your reviews are amongst the best on UA-cam, not many reviewers can provide a useful perspective on the product AND back the review up with genuinely great photos taken on the product. You usually get one or the other. I really enjoy your work. I'm sure you'll do great on your own.
i absolutely LOVED every video of your full frame series. your enthusiasm and energy is simply infectious. excited to follow and support you on your solo career!
Very fair and balanced. I like your work and I am looking forward to following you. Good for you to acknowledge the good and the less good at The Verge. Less experienced folks than you have genned up a UA-cam channel - so you're going to knock it out of the park. Keep doing what you're doing. I'm subscribed!
You have all my respect and admiration. You are a person who transmits and exudes passion for what you do. I love your videos and wherever you publish your videos, I will follow you. Thank you and keep showing.
This is pretty common in media. But I've learned to appreciate the fact that I don't walk away with nothing, I walk away with invaluable experience. Since I've aimed to work at companies that allowed me to learn, train, and ask questions. That knowledge has only helped me gain even better jobs.
Been a Verge fan for years. I think you and Dieter were probably the only two Vergers whose work I would instantly read, so I subbed. Good luck with everything. PS: you should probably find a writer to help you leverage this from a YT channel into a media empire. Text still rules in so many ways.
I've always been a huge fan of your videos-the energy and fun moments you bring are truly unmatched. While it's bittersweet to see you go, I'm excited to witness your journey with even more creative freedom. I'll definitely keep following your work and can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Instant sub! You were the only person that kept me coming back to the Verge. Now I dont’t have to go back, because I’m right here where I belong - and so are you Becca. So happy for you, love your honesty and openly curious energy. Love from Sweden 🌈
You've taught me so much about photography over the years, you have even influenced my style and I'm super grateful for that. You got this! Excited to see where this takes you and to learn from you along the way. 🎉
"Everything I made at the Verge is theirs, and I'm taking nothing with me." I hear you, but hear me out: Here's what you made that's yours: You made a huge mark on the community; you made a brand; you made a dent in the universe. You own that, The Verge gets leftovers. Here's what you're taking with you: 25,000 people already following you here, the first of hundreds of thousands to come. Your incredible talent and perspective that you've honed over the years. A vision for something great you can build on your own. The videos that the Verge owns will depreciate in value, but your story is just starting. I'm excited to follow along!
Spot on! Becca is a unique voice and an amazing person, storyteller, communicator - she has all it takes. The Verge lost big on this one. So happy she is ours now 🥰😉
Listen again. She said the verge told her that they can MAKE her take down any videos on her personal social media. This isn't about the Verge owning the content you made for them. This is about somebody at that clown company thinking they own her. They can control her personal social media. They can tell her to take down anything they wanted off of her own social media.
Fear can keep us where we are, and fear can spur us forward. I'm glad to see you used that fear to push you forward. Life doesn't happen when you stay in one spot - it happens when we move. Get out there and make the stuff you want to make. Good luck to you!
Your videos were the ones i always made sure to watch on the verge. It's been clear to me for a long time that your were THE talent on that channel. Looking forward to what you'll do now!
After Dieter left the verge, you are the reason I keep watching the verge on youtube, and I was surprised there's not much video being made by you. Now I know, thanks for being Becca! Stay being Becca!
The most genuine and honest video I have ever seen on someone explaining why he / she left the job or left an organization. More power to you. Wishing you great luck. I will certainly watch your videos.
This is true! Even though i wasn't the biggest fan of Becca she seemed like she tells here! Just enjoying it here. I hope some friends of her at the verge follow her steps and they make there own youtube channel with just having fun again!
This is true! Even though i wasn't the biggest fan of Becca she seemed like she tells here! Just enjoying it here. I hope some friends of her at the verge follow her steps and they make there own youtube channel with just having fun again!
Well, obviously she needed The Verge to be where she is now. Otherwise she would have been somewhere else instead of that platform or company. Their offer was definitely the best for her at the time she joined them or maybe she did not even have offers from other companies or platforms. So let’s not make her spit in the plate she has been eating in for the whole time she was there. Lets be grateful for every opportunity we get no matter how it turns at some point.
The best parts of The Verge for sure. I feel like there's no personality left. Not a dig on anyone, but Dieter and Becca seemed to really be invested in what they did.
Sometime in the early 2000s companies decided that they want ownership rights to everything, whether you are an employee or an independent contractor creating anything for the company.
Not a fan of non-competes, but for on-screen employees I can understand it. The company is giving you a lot of exposure and basically investing in your personal brand, of course they have a legitimate interest in you not using that exposure to compete with or harm the brand.
Love your candor here. As a long-time consumer tech journalist with a long-running investment in video at the various places I've worked, not owning the content I make and the worry of those employers laying claim to things I create off-the-clock too are fears I totally sympathize with. I've also just gone freelance for the first time and I'm still figuring how to find the time to make the videos I want, for me, while also paying the bills, so wish you all the success on an endeavor that I identify with wholeheartedly. If ever you're in London, let's get a drink with John (Porter) and maybe we could collaborate on something. In the meantime, super excited to see what you have in store here. Loved everything you made at The Verge and can't wait for what's to come!
Becca! First off - congrats on this next step in your life and career. All of your reasons are so valid - especially as a creative. I am so proud of you for taking this next step - one not motivated by fear. Your community is here. Your peers are here! We support you! WOOOO let's go :)
I followed & subscribed to Verge just to watch your videos. Your reviews & take on products are so refreshing & informative. I'm so glad you chose the path less taken. I know you'll do wonders while growing leaps & beyond. All the best!
Regarding reason 2. It's crazy to think that companies feel that they have control over what you can and cannot do in your free time. This was exactly the reason I left my previous employer and went freelance. Good for you for making the decision to leave, and I wish you all the best!
This has been huge in automotive UA-cam over the last couple of years. To be honest, I enjoy the freelance/small channel content way more than the big channels. Props to Becca
TBH, the ONLY times that I clicked on a video from the Verge, it's because you were in it. So plz remember, we always love you and the contents you make.
The Verge might've been the one that introduced me to you, but I always watched those videos because of YOU, not the Verge. Wishing you the best of luck with your channel, looking forward to even more amazing videos from you :)
What a wonderful vid. A big story of which I feel the message myself. Corona broke most of us. Glad you did exactly what you did now. Great journey, strive!
You were one of the bright lights at The Verge. I've never liked the organisation, pretty much when Topolsky left. Patel always came across as dominating/strongarming so I'm wondering what most of that language came from. You've got guts.. rock on Becca!
Becca, your videos were the only ones I watched on the Verge UA-cam channel. Best of luck to you here, branching out and doing your own thing. I am a subscriber.
I hope things were left on good terms with The Verge. I like them, but they are owned by VOX so I'm sure can be a bit "corporate" which can be tough for creators. I am excited, however, to see what you will be doing now. I think a lot of other independent creators liked your work, so hopefully there can be some cross pollination there. Your Creator Series was a great part of The Verge - hopefully you can continue that (and that should be pretty good for building your subs, as well 😁)
I’ve been following The Verge’s reviewers for over a decade, and you were one of the last ones I kept up with. I’ve always appreciated your perspective in the videos, and these days, I find myself watching more UA-cam than browsing The Verge’s website (and I think I'm not the only one). I also noticed the "evolution" of The Verge through the years when key players left... I noticed your absence recently, so I was pleasantly surprised to come across this video. Keep pushing forward, and embrace the fear in a positive way. I wish you all the best in your journey. “Here’s to Becca!”
The Verge is owned by Vox Media and Vox itself has seen exodus of people leaving and start their own channels from Johnny Harries, Cleo Abram, Phil Edwards to name a few.
Your iPhone 16 Pro camera review popped up in my feed so I’m literally just finding out you left The Verge! 😭 I absolutely loved your videos on The Verge and I am absolutely looking forward to future content with your own channel! All the best!
“Here goes nothing.” Broke me. I’m so happy that you’re doing your own thing now. Seeing you on the verge was like a breath of fresh air because it felt more real for some reason to me. Can’t wait to see what comes!
thought your videos at the verge were the most interesting after dieter. happy to hear you're branching out, it was time anyway, the world is so much more different now post covid.
I love the energy you have in this video! You were always enjoyable to watch at the Verge, but its really great that you are starting your own channel and the excitement and dedication is already so clear from this video. Subscribed and looking forward to more vids!
Every time i watched a video of you on verge, it put a big smile on my face, loved your content and your fun way of presentation. Wish you all the very best.
I love your videos, good luck. The Verge have lost so much talent over the past years, I’m surprised they are still able to keep going. EDiT: After watching your video, I now know why you left. You’re going to be great going alone on UA-cam Becca.
The verge has gone so down hill in the past and 5-6 years unfortunately and this totally makes sense. Thanks for the insight! Will continue to follow and support. Your content has always been fun and engaging and I'm looking forward to seeing your work grow!
Congrats Becca! I always loved your content. Regarding the A7C, you were the primary reason for getting me to upgrade my 11 year old aging Sony DSLR to the A7C and get back into photography. Been enjoying it ever since! Looking forward to seeing more of your content!!!
The reality is that when you work for a company, what you do is done for them, not you. It’s “work for hire”. That means it’s theirs. This is standard everywhere. There’s no point to complain about it. So, working for yourself, is great, if that bothers you.
When you’re working for a company all code/content/doc belongs to that company, you should know that. Its not a big thing. You are face for verge thats why they said you cant post, its common sense.
Vox Media, of which The Verge is a part of, has a habit of loosing key talent. Same is true for Buzzfeed/Tasty. These new media companies have fucked up a lot by not retaining talent
My first impression upon hearing you leaving The Verge was "Nooooo I loved Becca!" but after watching this video it's more like "Yaaaaas! I love Becca!". I certainly understand why you left, now. I'll definitely be following what you do going forward. You've always been one of my favorite hosts/writers!
Nice to know you worked with Dieter too! For years, I see the Verge a sinking ship. If it wasn't for very few creators like you and Dieter, I would have unsubscribed them a long time ago. Regarding the opinion that the company owns your work, that's actually a universal law. The rationale is that the company is the platform that gives you the opportunity and it is the company that takes the risk of losing money. Sure, you can renegotiate your cut of the money, or do what Taylor Swift did. Anyway, can't wait for your next video!
No it's not. The company owns the work you do for them. If she posted stuff on her own time, with her own equipment on her own personal social media, they don't own that.
@@albundy06 Not really... as she signed the Non compete agreement. So she ACCEPTED never to do that. SO they can argue that the content produced by her (in her free time), could still be liable of being pulled into the verge. That is a legal grey area as it would be competition for digital/Advertising money. I completely see Nilay pulling this card right off the bat. He is the legal master for content...
A non-compete doesn't mean they own you and everything you do on the internet just because they're on Internet If she was posting cooking content, gardening, NYC food reviews etc whatever. They don't just get to say we can tell you to take down anything they want. Doesn't mean that trash company and more importantly that awful human you mentioned wouldn't try that nonsense. That's what awful bullies and bad people like him do.

@@albundy06 I am with you... not defending them. I think the issue was that she mentioned on the original video she was going to do tech stuff (sony a7c). THey don't own it, but they can ask for a takedown for analysis based on that publication. that is the same as "owning it", if you can't have it published.
I stumbled upon your Verge series a while ago and really enjoyed your reporting style and genuine fun. So excited for this next chapter, and am proud of you for taking “the leap” to do it on your own - subscribed and looking forward to seeing all you do. Cheers.

So happy for you! I always enjoyed your videos on the Verge! Excited to follow you on your new journey.
What Becca says at 4:40 is exactly what a lot of creatives are told from big media companies. Speaking from personal experience.
If an employer pays you to make something, it's theirs. It's always been this way.
The funniest part is these clownish companies always end up chasing away their actual talent with these dumb threats.
That's just what it means to work at like....a job. It's funny to hear it stated with such a dark tone.
You were easily 1 of my top 2-3 favorite people at the Verge. Super excited to see what's next now that you're free to be 100% you!
Loved everything you made at The Verge and can't wait for what's to come!
would LOVE to hang with you guys! yes yes yes
This is one of the best Becca videos ever. I'll be along for the ride. 🥰
Becca! First off - congrats on this next step in your life and career. All of your reasons are so valid - especially as a creative. I am so proud of you for taking this next step - one not motivated by fear. Your community is here. Your peers are here! We support you! WOOOO let's go :)
There are always valuable rewards to be gleaned from great risk. You will soon see those. 😊
Your energy and light is so contagious and wonderful, wishing nothing but the best for you!
The perfect summary really. Every time I see Becca on camera she just lights up and it's contagious
I followed & subscribed to Verge just to watch your videos. Your reviews & take on products are so refreshing & informative. I'm so glad you chose the path less taken. I know you'll do wonders while growing leaps & beyond. All the best!
"Becca. Be Becca, " That's the best thing I've learned today.
Youre like the main reason why we still watch the verge
Right??? I wait for her camera content all the time and it's almost the only thing I see on the verge lately
Good luck Becca! I love the idea you have for your channel! I’ll be watching for sure, look forward to seeing you out there! 🎉👏
TBH, the ONLY times that I clicked on a video from the Verge, it's because you were in it. So plz remember, we always love you and the contents you make.
So true
The Verge might've been the one that introduced me to you, but I always watched those videos because of YOU, not the Verge. Wishing you the best of luck with your channel, looking forward to even more amazing videos from you :)
05:46, you’re right, not fair. ☘️
That reassuring “you got this” is so heartwarming. So, here’s another “you got this”. 😊
judgmentcallpodcast covers this. Why I left The Verge
More power to you! The UA-cam grind is hard alone. Please don't give up, you motivate us too!
Your iPhone 16 Pro camera review popped up in my feed so I’m literally just finding out you left The Verge! 😭
I absolutely loved your videos on The Verge and I am absolutely looking forward to future content with your own channel! All the best!
Seems like everyone is just avoiding the 5:00 comments about the Verge dragging Becca into a meeting to remind her of her place.
A lot of companies do that and aren’t consistent with their policies with others. I just wanna thank The Verge, I got to meet Becca.
“Here goes nothing.” Broke me. I’m so happy that you’re doing your own thing now. Seeing you on the verge was like a breath of fresh air because it felt more real for some reason to me. Can’t wait to see what comes!
Joining the chorus here that you were the reason I subscribed to The Verge in the first place!
Always tuned into the Verge specifically for your videos. Can't wait to see what you make!
thought your videos at the verge were the most interesting after dieter. happy to hear you're branching out, it was time anyway, the world is so much more different now post covid.
God I miss Dieter 😢 His reviews was so spot on
I love the energy you have in this video! You were always enjoyable to watch at the Verge, but its really great that you are starting your own channel and the excitement and dedication is already so clear from this video. Subscribed and looking forward to more vids!
First ! Great Video So Far ! :)
You're a fucking rockstar, Becca! Can't wait to see what you do.
Well I like this video & it’s because of you, and I just found out about you this week! Let it rip :)! 7:10
Congratulations for the new start Becca. Looking forward to see your work 👍👏
Verge f-ed up. She is a talent powerhouse. Letting her go will wind up as one of their most stupidest mistake!
Vox Media, of which The Verge is a part of, has a habit of loosing key talent. Same is true for Buzzfeed/Tasty. These new media companies have fucked up a lot by not retaining talent
Right after that website redesign, right?
F-ed up? Why it's all about The Verge? It was HER decision. Great decision. Don't care about companies. Care about people.
@@albundy06 got it, thx for clarifying
@@albundy06 Not really... as she signed the Non compete agreement. So she ACCEPTED never to do that. SO they can argue that the content produced by her (in her free time), could still be liable of being pulled into the verge. That is a legal grey area as it would be competition for digital/Advertising money. I completely see Nilay pulling this card right off the bat. He is the legal master for content...
A non-compete doesn't mean they own you and everything you do on the internet just because they're on Internet
If she was posting cooking content, gardening, NYC food reviews etc whatever.
Cheers.
Rumor has it Becca was on the verge of leaving for a minute
Lol
One of my only reasons to watch that channel! 100% Support!
Quite honestly, I’ve only ever seen you in passing on the Verge, but this introduction was so genuine and lovely that I know I’ll be sticking around!
Loved your videos on the Verge. Excited to see this next chapter in your career!
