    I've personally never understood the point of having two jump buttons in Smash, Nintendo should just make one of them a short hop button instead, it'll make advanced movements more accessible for casual players. Personally, on this controller, I have mixed feelings about the weird 5-button layout, why not just go to a 6-button layout instead?
    Another thing I've questioned in the past, which I hope Microsoft may be paving the way of change for with the XBS controller design, is why not have an 8-way D-pad? So many games use diagonals as a form of input, why do we not make 45° diagonals their own button, this would also allow for eight additional mixed inputs at the 22.5° diagonals, which would allow for double the functionality of the current D-pad design. In the case of games like Smash, this would almost entirely omit the need for the octagonal gate on the stick, as the game would more than likely be entirely playable with an 8-way D-pad.

    How many years has smash as a franchise existed with two distinct kinds of jump and two distinct jump buttons, but no option to match each kind of jump to its own button? So frustrating.

    • @Mars-pw4iw
      @Mars-pw4iw 3 роки тому +3

      Because not only will mapping a dedicated short hop button go against smashes simple design concept that attracts its massive casual audience but having a dedicated button for short hopping and full hopping will just add another button to account for
      Eg: gamecube controllers have 3 shoulder buttons and most players map 1 of them to jump with the other 2 being shield and grab
      Adding a dedicated button for short hopping will not only cripple new players learning curves but upset the balance of buttons being used.

      Rivals of Aether lets you map any of jump (natural, like smash's), dedicated full hop, and dedicated short hop, as well as having dedicated attack and smash buttons by default (which can be consolidated like smash does).

    • @KP_Uravity
      @KP_Uravity 3 роки тому

      @@Mars-pw4iw this is the worst take I've ever seen. Most new players won't be able to pull off short hops, so simply letting a spate button do it would make it easier for everyone. I imagine on the regular jump button you'd still be able to short hop with a brief press too. At the very least a short hop button in the options would be nice like tilt attacks on the c stick. Still its a moot point because pressing both jump buttons at the same time will only short hop, and this has not "crippled" any new players.

    Finally a decent review of the controller. The other were basically unboxing vids and not much else.
    Like a few others have said, I would have probably jumped on it if it retained the gc button layout with modern controller esthetics. Nintendo should have just coded short hop as an option instead of having 2 jump buttons. They already made it a shortcut, why not just make it a regular button option.
    Hoping retro releases an actual wired GC controller with modern esthetics with no extra gimmicks (maybe an extra z trigger)

    • @KyleDavis328
      @KyleDavis328 3 роки тому

      They did just announce a wireless GC controller with modern aesthetics that's Gamecube compatible... Unfortunately it's using an inline analog stick design like a playstation controller, which is fine for some people and great for 2d platformers and fighting games... But most major Gamecube games really assume you're not even using the d-pad, so why they didn't just use the same stick layout as this controller is beyond me.

    This is a cool idea!
    However, I think the S button storing macros is going to get it banned from tournaments, which may really hold the controller back if it is targeted at the audience who are buying GCCs.
    Many smash players really like to assign grab or shield to a face button too, I think if the S button was a simple remappable button, it would be a much more viable controller in a competitive setting I feel

    • @KyleDavis328
      @KyleDavis328 3 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately you're almost definitely correct. Not to mention that no one ever uses wireless controllers at tournaments anyways, too difficult to re-pair when the console you were previously connected to is still in range (assuming in person tournaments). Also, The only way I could see the S button being just a remappable button is if it took the place of the left shoulder button and going back to the retro GameCube design of not having a left shoulder.

      Don't get me wrong, I think the controller is cool, but they admit themselves that the controller is aimed at smashers, who wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, so it really misses the mark and unfortunately is just kinda, useless?

    I do think the gates are cool, it might allow for some sliding downtilts or simpler wavebounces. However, the s button seems like a waste. There’s already a ton of options to use a smash attack (including a+b smash). Plus, you’ll be stunting yourself if you never learn to short hop, and three frames of a press lets your fingers move to the next button quicker. You’ll only ever need three face buttons, if you have rb as grab, and rt as jump (for attack cancels)

      Do the sticks have 8 "rails" inside mechanically speaking when you move them around without touching the gate? (Not talking about the notches of the gate itself).

      I'm tempted to get one...

    • @calebricks4890
      @calebricks4890 3 роки тому +1

      @@MerryBlind I, unfortunately, can't quite answer your question. It does have the notches, but the rails... I've never actually had any experience with rails in a controller (to my knowledge), so...I don't know. In addition, I've never actually held a pro controller (I've only ever used one random off brand controller until I moved onto the 8bitdo SN30). I can, say, however, that it's probably lighter than a pro controller.

    The story behind this controller was one hell of a trip. Retro Fighters (a predominantly kickstarter-driven company) ran a campaign for the Duelist back in June 2020 and even met it's own goal of $13,000. But then cut the campaign short (presumably within first few days or weeks) citing planned revisions based off feedback. They currently don't even list the Duelist in their own store, but I've found 2 online retailers that do. There are a number of videos on UA-cam promoting and reviewing the Duelist - which may have been creator prototypes. But just a week ago (2021 Sept) Retro Fighters released a product video of the Duelist. This feels like either a wildly botched product release or some sort of scam. But for $30 I'll take my chances. YMMV
    It'd be cool though if someone actually dug into this.

    Do the sticks have the eight "rails" inside mechanically for the 8 directions like an actual GC controller or does it only have the gate notches? Kind of an important point.
    EDIT: Apparently the sticks don't have the rails, only the notches.

    • @Lethamos
      @Lethamos 3 роки тому

      What do you mean by rails? What do they do?

    • @MerryBlind
      @MerryBlind 3 роки тому

      @@Lethamos It's hard to understand without having an actual GC controller in your hands, but imagine there was a line going from each 8 "notch" to the center of the stick. The mechanism of the stick makes it so that the 8 lines guide the stick to stay on/in them. There's like resistance in-between those lines that makes the stick want to stay in the lines and move from line to line when moving the stick around. Whereas a normal stick would feel consistent throughout its whole range of motion.
      That's part of the reasons why the GC stick is so precise for those 8 directions; it's not JUST the notches you see around the stick but also the inside mechanism.

    • @KyleDavis328
      @KyleDavis328 3 роки тому

      @@MerryBlind Pretty sure that's just in your head. The way analog sticks work is by having two axes of rotation, vertical and horizontal that tell the console where the stick is in relation to center. Older controller designs like the gamecube, aren't designed to be as smooth, making vertical and horizontal directions easier to get spot on. My proof, I've taken apart my controller before and just did as a sanity check. Up and down as well as left and right are very natural, but diagonals are only smooth once you go to one of the cardinal direction.

    • @MerryBlind
      @MerryBlind 3 роки тому

      @@KyleDavis328 Yeah you just described what I'm trying to describe but in a different way. They're not actual "rails". I've also taken apart my controller I've seen the stick and all that. All I'm saying is you can definitely feel that the 8 directions are easier to do than not doing the 8 directions. The stick "guides" you to stay in those 8 lines but you can still go anywhere in between them; it's still a fully analog stick.

    Urgh....
    Look.
    The idea is splendid, the controller looks good, the colours are pretty and the love the "GameCube, but all buttons are round" approach.
    HOWEVER.
    Love...why make the "A" button bigger, but keep it to the side?
    Why didn't you have the "B" button be a tad angled higher, like on an original GC pad?
    C'mon...I understand the logistics, as this controller probably uses the same contact rubber so many others do, but still...
    To me it feels like a halfway commitment (mind you I wound NOT want them to do "X" and "Y" like a GC controller, much less "Z"). Just look at that wasted space between the centre of gamepad and the right buttons.
    Note: I don't mind the C-stick, though I would rather have it be the same size as the left, with the grip ridges on top, but yellow.
